Donald Sterling Banned for life and fined $2.5 million.  Dayum!  Strongest sports penalty ever?  I'm not saying he didn't deserve it, because he did, but damn!

I'm just a bit unclear on the whole "forcing someone to sell something they own" part of this.  I am not, by any means condoning what he said, but his all-out bigotry and manipulation of people is not news.  Stern should have addressed this years ago instead of letting it fester...
Paul, it hasn't been determined whether they will or can force him to sell the team.  he is now banned from all operations of the team and supposedly his wife is taking over at this time (that will be interesting since he is not her favorite person either).
they will be looking into a movement by the NBA Board of Directors to force him to sell the team, but there is no clear answer of whether that can be done.  I am sure no one even knows what is in those documents.

seems comparable to when Big George was banned by MLB in the 90s (or was it the 80s?).  he wa slater reinstated and that will not happen in this case.

I'm guessing Adam Silver, in his first major press conference, would mention that he is working with the Board of Governors to force a sale, if he didn't think it was possible.  Also, Wojnarowski is indicating it is supported.

right, working with BoD to force a sale and imposing it are different as of now.
he may or may not put up more of a legal battle if that was actually imposed.
I don't want it to seem like I am defending him because I am not.  I would just expect more of a legal battle if he was ordered to sell the team, which is partially what your original point was about.
it is going to turn into an ethical/moral issue vs. a legal issue.  I have no idea what the NBA documents say but I am sure his highly paid legal team will argue they say something different.

I hear ya. I guess that's why I'm so intrigued by what Silver said and what Woj is reporting.

I don't think he can legally challenge it

interesting.

it is also encouraging to see that Silver handed out the maximum penalty possible.

eta:  I tried using business logic to form my opinion but forgot to consider there was a Constitution involved (NBA Constitution) and I should know that anything goes.
looks liek the end result will be what 99% of the people in the world want so no tears shed.

That's just awesome.  Ya gotta love it when a rich guy's dumbass views screws up his fortune.

It really won't screw up his fortune. He bought the team for 12 million dollars in '81 or '82. Spent very little on running it until just recently. If sold it will be worth upwards 800 million. Not a bad payday. He'll be dead soon anyway. He's 80.

FYP.

Would love to see a game 7. The bullets have sucked my entire life despite some pretty awesome-on-paper lineups...it's awesome to see them actually put all the pieces together.

That and Nene is my favorite player EVAR and it was really awesome to watch him & Gortat crush the pacers on the boards the other night (outrebounded by 40+ at home  :-o )
