oh man! I could review this one without even listening to it again!! This is one of my favorite shows of all time with what is my hands-down favorite Mike's ever. It was also the first time I heard Slave - never even had a tape with Slave on it when I saw them play it at this show. Such a great night!

But, I don't think our fans do happily lap it up, I think they go online and talk about how it was a bad show.

This one was on the must listen to list, so how could I pass it up for my first show pick ?!

rowjimmy

Great pick.
Shame the lossy dl is one file at a time. that's kind of a hassle...

Sorry about that.  I tried the new wizard tool for the first time, so y'all are the victims of my experimentation.

Can we talk about the Dead?  I'd love to talk about the fucking Grateful Dead, for once, can we please discuss the Grateful FUCKING Dead!?!?!?!

What, no Hydrogen?

QFT! jk.

I'm glad you got it.  Also, I finally got around to listening to the Mike's from 8.  I agree.  A Hydrogen was totally appropriate there.  I would have been pissed too.

Bowie: A big way to open the show. Mike is killin' it in the opening. Tight composed section and then a cool little Dream On section that was obviously planned beforehand. There isn't much of a mellow section to this jam. It pretty much jumps right in. Great stuff. It gets dissonant at 9:00 but that's about as exploratory as it gets. Condensed, high energy version here. With another little Dream On refrain at the end to finish off. Helluva way to open a show.

Weigh: Nice and tight. Not so much a rarity back then, but still great to hear.

Curtain: Sweet! I love the fact that Mike is so high in the mix on the sbd. Baby's MOOOUUUUUTTTHHH!!! Gorgeous harmonies right there. Solid version and a great pace for the set, so far.

Sample: Standard

Paul & Silas: Wish they would play this more often. Good solo spots.

Forbin/Mockingbird: A little pre-New Years treat here. Bath, Maine? Off by about 30 miles there, Trey. Anyway, fun story...surfing the wave. Unfortunately, Mockingbird is pretty badly botched by Trey. The second half is pretty spot on, though.

Rift: Great spot for this. Gets the crowd moving.

Gin: The first Gin since the Murat show. Starts off with a somewhat standard, dissonant Gin jam and then completely does a 180 ~6:30 and goes face-melting crazy. Always loved this Gin. It doesn't last long, but that crazy breakdown is a thing of beauty. Cool outro, too.

Freebird: Wackiness to end the set.

A killer first set. Apart from the Mockingbird, it's flawless. The song selection is great and you get 2 sweet jams taboot.

2001: Sweet opener. And right into:

Mike's: BAM! Tasty playing by Trey during the intro. Once again, Mike is all over the place here. It IS his song, after all. Drops to F. More upbeat than most Mike's at this point. Everyone's really on in this one. Page doesn't really stand out, since he's just chording on the organ, but the other three sound fantastic. Shortly thereafter, they do start into somewhat of an evil jam that really builds nicely. Then slowly dissolves into a real smooth segue into:

Horse>Silent: Strangely, it works well here.

pnchundi: And right back up with the energy. Mike with the harmonics during the intro (does he always do that?) I never really noticed. Trey struggles a bit during the Landlady section. They more than make up for it with a blazing fast, fiery ending.

McGrupp: Great spot for this. Good to see Page get a solo spot, too. And right back into:

Week4paug: Fiery. Quality shreddage and a vocal jam ending.

Purple Rain: Purple Rain

Slave: This Slave is top notch from the get-go.  The composed section has an extra punch.  Lots of extra embellishment and added flavors make this one special.  Glorious peak.  Fantastic end to the set.

Rocky Top: I'm a fan of this as a closer.   Hot version.

GxBx:  Bonus!  Nice version, complete with a dissonant jam after the final chorus.

Certainly a fan favorite.  And rightly so.  What's not to like?  Great setlist, great playing, New Years run, aquarium stage setup, sbd recording... it goes on and on.  Personal favorite highlight is the Gin, which I'm going to go listen to again right now.  A+ show.

remember when phish played shows where no song was longer than 12:30 and everyone loved it?
me neither.

i listened to this show while doing chores around the house, and didnt take the best notes.
so, this is what stood out and made me grab my notepad:

bowie - sweet dream on tease, and cool dissonant off tune jamming
curtain - super solid
gin - fish breaks it down and they turn it into a hyper-jam.  very cool.
freebird - a little rougher than usual
mikes - awesome jam here, unlike anything ive heard in a mikes before.
horse/silent - killer acoustic segueway out of mikes into this horse....
mcgrupp - nailed
purple rain - love it

...and thats about all the notes i took for this one.  every song is played solid, and its such a fun show to listen to.  spent more time dancing around cleaning and whatnot than taking notes, however.

great pick, just hard to review.... A/A+
