Title: 'Paug Parents!
Post by: newplanet7 on June 10, 2007, 09:18:57 PM
Or whomever wants to weigh in on any of the subjects.
I know jimmy is a dad and Nab recently is... anyone else?

???1) Discipline

I have tried a many of ways to do this and many have failed.
I was looking for some feedback on others methods of discipline.

Others who don't have kids can weigh in also. Let us know what worked for you when your parents disciplined you.

well...having an alcoholic father who was a drill sgt. in the marines.......a nice stiff beating always set me straight......but then again, look at me now....so I wouldn't advise on using that method......

how old is your child?

mine is 4, and discipline thus far has been pretty easy...  although, i've noticed that my wife & i have extremely different tactics..

usually, i try to explain why its bad/wrong that he did something... like last night, he broke a branch off of a tree to use as a lightsaber... and i had to tell him why it was not ok to harm the tree... after that, he understood better... and even gave the tree a hug!

I have two kids.
Meadow who is 3 in July and Zach who is 5 in October.
I have tried a many ways and the way that I use is similar to yours.
A calm down and listen to me while I explain the reason why it's innappropriate, discipline. I use to raise my voice a few times but...
I found both of them repeating MY behaviors, so that got cancelled with a quickness.

I have the same father as you mar. A marine to the gills. He is still a dick to my mom because he knows I won't take his shit now. I had a ton of beatings/verbal abuse when growing up. I went the opposite way of violence so I guess it really taught me something in the long run.

My daughter is so young (almost 3 months), we're not even into trying to reason with her yet.  Discipline in respect to teaching right and wrong isn't even on our radar yet.  She's not really responsible for her actions yet.
The hardest thing we've had to deal with so far is not coddling her every time she cries.  She is old enough, it seems, to start playing us for attention.  Needing to be held at her age is a gimmie, but, needing to be held at all times while awake seems excessive to me.  So now we're in the battle to teach her some tough love.  When we know that we've both held her and engaged her in play for a while, her pants are clean, her stomach is full, and she's still crying, sometimes we just have to put her down and walk away to get something done.  Hard to learn for new parents, but parents who've had kids for a while always kinda laugh when we tell them about this.  Any suggestions for teaching babies how to be more independent.

nab - i'll tell ya... we held eli 24/7.. i kid you not.

we were lucky enough to have work schedules that allowed one of the two of us to be with him at all times... and we held him ALL the time.

now?  well he's probably more independent than i'd prefer, but its awesome... he's his own person and loves to do his own thing.

we also had him sleep in bed with us...  up until he turned one.  then he got his own queen sized bed.. lol

When you guys put it like that, I really do sound like a hard ass. :-D

Just a new parent trying to get it right.  Its just frustrating hearing her cry when I have no solution to her problems.

Just being my usual self mang.  I helped raise my little brother and sister so I feel like I have a half a clue into how hard it is to be a parent.  I'm sure you are and will continue to be an awesome dad Nab!  :-)

I have 2 kids, 3 and 6 on Wednesday.    Its funny how different they are, but also how amazing.

As for discipline, I have made my mistakes.  Too easy, too hard, too loud!!   The yelling seems to lead to them yelling at us later on.

What I found is needed more than anything else is consistency.  The first couple of times you try something they don't respond.  Whether that be explaining or a timeout.  I have found that both together is what works.  If they are calm at the time I explain before and then do the timeout.   If they are not it is into the room or on the "timeout stair" (when to tired to head up) and then as soon as done I explain what they did wrong and that this was the consequence.  If they get off the stair, the clock starts again.  It was awful the first few times, but now they know and it seems to work great.

Stores, etc, I take them out as soon as they misbehave.  If it is because they want to go home, I take them outside, we stand out there until they calm down and then go back in.  That one was tough at first, but I had to be otherwise they would know they could control our lives.

This one is huge. It's doubly good for restaurants.

My wife would say to hold the kid as much as possible.  Before 1 really, they CAN'T learn independence.  Of couse there's a point where I wanted it to happen (much earlier than one year), but it does absolutely nothing for the child to let him/her cry.  Or so I've heard.

I have Jackson 5  and Ally 2.  Jack wasn't too bad.  I can't help raise  my voice.  I think it is a learned behavior.  If I remember to, or make a point to calm down, the explanation seems to be better than just a don't do that.  For Ally, who has proudly entered her terrible 2s, my wife is pulling her hair out, and I'm not far behind.  She's like a little devil.  So cute, but evil.

Oh, the best thing we found is to give two options...
Do you want to take a bath now, or in 5 minutes?  Kid makes the choice, and feels empowered and you get what you want.  The effectiveness of this slows at the 5 year mark, but we still use it.

this is a great tactic... eli still falls for this right now... but i must say, he's not much of a crier or a tantrum kid.  he's pretty calm and can understand where we are coming from most of the time.

Future Congrats

My best advice for the new person is the patented B+B+B method.  We are using breast feeding so our B+B+B stands for Bath+Boob+Bed (it could alternately be bath, bottle, bed).  By setting aside a certain time every day as bed time and repeating this process at that exact time every day (bed time) we made a transition into a set routine within 3 weeks of being born.  The time before that was just a blur.  Welcome to the Jungle.

Had completely forgotten to mention the giving choices, that is huge, you're right.

Also, routine, routine, routine.  Bed, same time every night.  Same routine to go to bed, same thing for nap.  If they try to break it perceiver.

I do need to say there is something we have done since both kids were only a few month old and it has paid off, we read to them every night before bed.  My 6 year old is by far the best reader in his class and my 3 year old recognizes words and letters and can spell everyone's name in the family.  It was suggested to me by my old landlord, figured with his "dumb" kid getting a 1520 on the SAT's he must be doing something right.

As for the little devil, its a girl thing.  My 3 year old girl is a terror, but we love her and she is so cute.

Thanks all for the well wishes.  The actual due date is Sunday (Father's Day), but it doesn't seem like she (yes, a girl) will wait that long.  We are having a homebirth, so at least I'll be able to keep logging on to the 'paug during labor!  Just kidding (about the 'paug, not the homebirth....)  I'll post some pics when she joins the planet....could be today, could be next week.

yes, i like this thread.

as you know, i have gabriel (age 3).  as far as needing to be held, g went thru that at about 2-3 months, and as much as I am a loving mother, sometimes there was just shit that needed to be done around the house, whatever...there was a lot of me making sure he was in a safe spot (in his crib, on the floor on a blanket with toys) and letting him "cry it out" while i took a walk up the street, sat outside, got on the phone....grasped at sanity while hopefully not pulling my hair out at the roots.  and i still use this tactic to this day.  just remember, crying is your baby's only way of communicating, and sometimes they are just having a shitty baby day, and that's how they can express that emotion.  now if gabriel freaks on me (over what I perceive to be something trivial, but it's a BIG DEAL to him, and i need to remember i have no right to trivialize his feelings) i hug him and tell him that it's okay to "cry it out" and when he gets done, he usually looks at me and says, "okay mama, i'm done crying."  and (poof) it's over,  the stress is gone, he's worked through his stuff and we can move forward.

as far as acting up in public, crying in restaurants, i say nip that shit in the bud immediately.  there is a time and place for everything.  if g starts to lose it in a restaurant, we immediately go outside until he can calm down, and there has only been one occasion where i have had to cancel my order and leave.  I CANNOT STAND IT WHEN PARENTS LET THEIR CHILDREN SCREAM IN A RESTAURANT.  if i can't do it, some kid shouldn't be able to do it.

i do reason a lot more with my son now that he can understand my reasoning.  he's a bright kid, and he understands what's right, when it's given to him in a clear concise way.  i am constantly amazed at him, and while i don't overinflate his ego, i definitely let him know how special and brilliant he is...

***caravan, CONGRATS, a father's day delivery would be perfect, eh?  good luck with the homebirth, and i hope for an easy labor, and a speedy delivery, definitely get some pics up...

I potty trained my sister, but boys are a pain in the ace.  Just try and reason with him, diapers are for babies and he's not a baby right?  If you can convince him that it's "cool" to use the potty that can be a great help.

well, we simply stopped using diapers... that was probably 1.5 - 2 yrs ago.  we put him in undies and just had to change alot, but mostly for pee... he had already gotten pretty good at using the toilet in general.

we used a sticker chart system that seemed to work really well... he got to put a sticker on his chart every time he successfully went potty on the toilet... and we really raved when he did (to boost his ego).

now the part we're stuck on is the bed wetting... which he's getting much better at, but still... its a pain to change his sheets at 1am when he's totally passed out and you need to move him, strip the bed, and put new sheets on...

and i suggest using the under sheet with the moisture absorbing lining.

For pee, a skittle or m&m is a good treat for doing the duty, but you should couple that with other stuff.  We did the pee-pee on the potty dance.  Other people claim that you can potty train your kid in a day, by just putting him on the potty every half-hour, and when he eventually goes, throw a party with noisemakers etc.  Make a phone call to a relative that can do a cartoon voice and talk to your child, and make it a big deal.  For poo, you gotta start early.  At 2-3 you'll be able to tell, because you can see your child go to their happy-place to go poo.  Go over there, don't grab them to go to the potty or anything, just put your hand on their belly and explain that that's the feeling of poo-poo and when they feel that, they should go on the potty.

I'm trying all these things with my daughter right now, but not using excessive effort.  We're not looking at everything as microscopically as our first.  We know it'll happen.  And don't discipline for accidents, but a short explanation works.  I'd hate it if potty time was fear-based, wouldn't you?  Boys take longer.  Mine was 3.5, and I'm sure my daughter will be trained by 3, she's almost going now, and not even 2.5.  My sister was amazingly mostly trianed by 18 months!

I hate diapers too.  And expensive.

J

It's all about THE POTTY BOX.  Not kidding, worked with both my kids.

Take a shoe box and decorate it.  Fill it with trinkets.  Little balls, matchbox cars, snack packages, whatever.  Every time they go they get to take something from the box.  For the first couple of days its a novelty and they go 20 times a day.  After that it gets to be normal and in 2-3 weeks they don't care anymore and go on their own.

we kept a baggie on the back of the toilet.

Would you tell your kids?

I thought this was an interesting article and would def apply to people aorund here.  I know I'll have to face this one day, assuming I have kids.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20414236/wid/11915773?GT1=10316

Ex-tokers wrestle with telling kids not to smoke
It's high time for parents to come clean about pot, some experts say

Parents are looking into the eyes of their teenage children and seeing their own past staring back.

Now, a generation of parents who cleaned their weed on "The White Album" are trying to figure out how to keep their kids from smoking pot and finding their efforts as useless as a double album in a world of iPods.

The big question for today's ex-stoners: Should I tell my kid that I've gotten high?

Some parents seem to have forgotten one of the first lessons we ever teach our children: Tell the truth, even when it's difficult to say or hear. But when it comes to that dreaded conversation, moms and dads are wincing at their past, even if they giggled through it at the time.

"I keep saying to my son, who is going into the music business, 'Look, you're going to be confronted with this stuff any day now,'" says Richard, whose son recently turned 18. "'The day I find out that you've tried it, your life shuts down.'"

Richard, who asked that his last name not be published, lives in upstate New York, not far from where he attended Woodstock as a 19-year-old. And though he was sober then, he tried dope later and feels it eventually led him down some dark paths. He absolutely forbids smoking pot, and neither of his two children knows he smoked. If they ever do sniff out the truth — and use it against him — Richard says he would "stress all the deleterious effects" he has seen and experienced.

Experts such as Mitch Earleywine, associate professor of psychology at State University of New York at Albany and author of the upcoming "The Parents' Guide to Marijuana," agrees with Richard's thinking, but would reproach him for his delivery.

"Soft emotions like sadness and disappointment are the thing to share with kids under these circumstances, as opposed to harder, negative emotions like anger," says Earleywine. Citing a brain study led by psychologist Peter Fried (what are the chances!), he continues, "Then the rational argument follows and includes information about new data that show early use alters brain development, decreases IQ scores and increases the risk for dependence."

Earleywine, who is on the advisory board of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, suggests a parental response along these lines: We didn't understand marijuana very well back then. It makes me sad that you might harm your brain or not be as smart. I'd like you to have all the advantages you can.

Hypocritical oaths
Among nonsmokers and midnight tokers alike, there seems to be a consensus that prohibition sparks the flame of interest: Tell a teenager "absolutely not" and you raise curiosity. Mix that in with a little natural teenage rebellion and you might as well light the bong for your kid.

"If my daughter ever asked me, I think I'd be honest with her about my smoking. ... Otherwise, she'd never believe me, and I think there's a trust issue there," admits Paul, a father of an 8- and 11-year-old from Connecticut who asked that his last name be withheld. However, he adds, "I probably wouldn't tell her how much!"

But telling the truth can corner parents. Struggling to reconcile their own experiences with feelings of hypocrisy, they may have the good-hearted notion to build a rapport of candor and trust by revealing their own experiences. At the same time, they worry it could come back to haunt them.

I believe in age appropriate honesty as well.  I wouldn't necessarily condone high school smoking, but I'm honestly more concerned about some of the places/people she might have to be in contact with to obtain pot.  I think about some of the sticky situations I was in when I was younger (from nervous dealers wielding guns to access to more dangerous drugs in addition to pot) that really makes me question why I didn't get myself in more trouble when I was in HS.

If I may, RJ:  I saw this, and thought it was amusing, and possibly, something you as a football fan would appreciate.

Quote
So your wife just had a baby boy. Well, congratulations!

So you want your son to be an NFL quarterback, huh? Get it right, Dad, when you name the lad. Here are some tips:

1. Give your boy a goofy middle name.

Think I'm crazy? Ask these guys: Brett (Lorenzo) Favre, Dan (Constantine) Marino, Fran (Abury) Tarkenton, Johnny (Constantine) Unitas, Joe (Clifford) Montana, Peyton (Williams) Manning, Roman (Ildonzo) Gabriel, or Daunte (Rachard) Culpepper.

You get the picture.

2. Come up with a clever nickname for him.

Once again, if you don't believe me then consult the following: "Broadway" Joe Namath, Don "The Magic Man" Majkowski, Joe "Cool" Montana, Christian "Sonny" Jurgensen, "Boomer" Norman Esiason, Ken "Snake" Stabler, "Dandy" Don Meredith, "Slingin' " Sammy Baugh, Norm "The Dutchman" Van Brocklin, Daryle "The Mad Bomber" Lamonica, Charlie "Roach" Connerly, Ralph "Dieter" Brock, Roger "The Dodger" Staubach, Edmund "Zeke" Bratkowski, Jake "The Snake" Plummer, Terry "The Blonde Bomber" Bradshaw, Walter "Bubby" Brister, Russell "Rusty" Hilger, "Scramblin' " Fran Tarkenton, or Earl "Dutch" Clark.

3. Do not make his first name begin with A,C,E,H,I,K,M,P,Q,U,V,X, or Z.

There are no men enshrined as quarterbacks in the Pro Football Hall of Fame with first names beginning with any of those letters.

4. Do consider the first names of Bob or liven it up with Bobby.

If you don't think this is a good idea, then check with any of these former or present NFL quarterbacks

Bob Avelinni
Bob Berry
Bob Bleier
Bob Celeri
Bob Clatterbuck
Bob Davis
Bob DeMoss
Bob Gagliano
Bob Gamold
Bob Griese
Bob Lee
Bob Naponic
Bob Ptacek
Bob Scrabis
Bob Schweickert
Bob Trocolor
Bob Waterfield
Bob Waters
Bob Williams
Bobby Douglass
Bobby Garrett
Bobby Hebert
Bobby Lane
Bobby Scott
Bobby Thomason

5. Naming your son John (or some similar derivative) also gives him a better chance of being an NFL signal-caller.

Congrats to all of you who just had or are soon to have a baby.

My wife and I have a 2 year old boy, Carson, (Ides of March baby, 3-15) and a daughter on the way, due in June.
RJ, I have to apologize because we are going with Piper as a name...but we were going to name the first one that if it was a girl, so I don't mean to tread on your name.  But I love the name Althea, too.  I was pushing for Cassidy, but it might be a middle name.

Kids are great!  Man, I am tired...

Kids love music.   They can dance, have fun, etc.  There could be a group of parents and children that can enjoy the show together, which could be cool.

Bad:
Can you really enjoy the show or will you be thinking about the baby and how loud it is, the smoke, etc?
Can the baby be alright through three hours of a show?  Lots of stimulation can overload the child.  If you have to leave the show, is it worth it to go and not see/listen to the whole thing?  Is this an appropriate environment to have your kids in?  (these are obviously different for each parent and their own opinions)

I personally feel as though I wouldn't want to bring my kids to shows until they are old enough to take care of the themselves and I can enjoy the show (although I will still prolly worry about them regardless of age).  When I am at a show, I want to be able to do whatever I want without the responsibility of worrying about a child.   I want to be able to party before the show in the lot, puff some in the show, and get a little crazy without the responsibility of a child.  Of course, I don't feel comfortable with having my kids around drugs, although that doesn't mean everyone at a phish show is a druggie, but I think you know what I am talking about.

For some people this will work wonderfully and others it won't.  It depends on the child and the mindset of the parent.  It could be great but it could be a headache.

You could always try something close to your home that offers a similar environment as a test run.  If it works, run it.  If not, at least you know before you drop the cash and time on tour and have a bad experience.

Just my $0.02

Notice my reasons for yes are much fewer than my reasons for no. ;)

Bump with a purpose--

In anticipation of getting SPAC tickets, I'd love to read whatever you all think about taking a little one (~18 months this summer) to shows.
I wouldn't if I were you.  It's one thing if you're going to see Chicago or something and had lawn seats, but it's gonna be sold out and there will be wasted people walking around with lit cigarettes and stuff like that.  Just a lot of potential for a bad scene.

My advice, spring for a sitter.

Thanks guys! I knew there was a discussion a while back, but once I determined it wasn't in this thread I was lost.

SPAC is close to home for us--2 hours from home, and just 1 hour from a place we can stay free. It also has a huge park extending back from the lawn, which makes it one venue I think I could feel comfortable with. And as far as partying goes, well, by then I'll have been to at least 5  :phish: shows already this year. So it'll depend on our comfort and Ellie's general attitude as the summer goes along.... If we get tix, today I'd bet that we'll go for it.

I took my oldest daughter to three shows when she was <2.
I had to leave the last one early.
I never took her again.

It was fun having her around, but its way more effort.

I was having a chat about this yesterday, if I recall. ;)

Bro, don't do this. In all honesty it's not the atmosphere for a toddler. Drugs, freaks, lot rats and a rock concert for a child that young? Do you really want to expose your kids to something that crazy at such a young age? Look, it's just one man's opinion, but I've seen children at shows and in the lot and it's just not an environment for them. That's adult time.

My half penny.

i think i've chimed in before... BUT eli is gonna be 6 next month...

AND is DEFINITELY going to shoreline.... he's the bomb, and loves to dance to phish, and this will be the best show for him to go to (vs the gorge & alpine).  plus there are going to be about 25 of our best friends who will finally get to meet him, so its a win all around for us.

the timing is right for us... finally

We took our oldest to his first show when he was almost 5...summer, outdoors (Walnut Creek '03), camped afterwards.  It was a ball!!  He had a blast, loved the music.  He got a little tired by the end, but we were near the back of the lawn where it was less crowded, and we had brought a big blanket for him to lie down.  It was a great time!  He'll be 11 this summer, remembers going the first time, and can't wait to see them again!

I wouldn't take a young child to an indoor show, but outdoors should be cool.  My advice would be to stay where it's not very crowded, and you guys should be fine!  Have fun!

We will be needing to take our 2 year old to the first Gorge show because we are leaving for vacation the next day and driving back to Portland adds 4-5 hours of driving back in the direction we came.  She should be fine and the Gorge should not be too hectic, as long as we stay away from the campground.....We took her to the Mike Gordon show on my birthday last year at battery park and she raged it.  Stayed up till midnight and just danced and ran around the whole show, so it should be cool...

The biggest thing in a GA/Lawn type setup is being willing to stay back out of the denser crowd. Unless, of course, you have a large, kid-friendly, crew who can pitch in and share the responsibility of corralling the kids.

yeah, we will be way back...At the big festivals, we have always set up a roped off area in front of the stacks, and that has always been great for the kiddies, but I don;t know about roping off an area at the Gorge!  It is also a little easier when you have a group of 50+ people to actually need to rope off an area.  I think if we roped off an area for 3 people it would be kind of weird!!

We'll be with a monster big crew, almost all related to our daughter by blood or marriage, and she'll be the only child with us. And most everyone in our group except for my wife & baby will also have seen several show already this year. Then you've got SPAC allowing strollers in, and the park back of the lawn... I think we're more than adequately covered should we decide to bring her.

I more than appreciate all the input. Week4paug.net rules--gotta get me a couple of those shirts.

Any of you parents ever play music for your unborn babies?

I've been getting into listening to music with my unborn son.....Miles Davis, Phish, Beatles.  Not sure if there are any benefits to it or not but I figure its never too early to start him on the right track.

^^^All the time. Now, though, it's almost 100% kids' music. Apparently (read: according to the parenting books my wife has read and I haven't) loud, hectic rock music isn't good for my baby's development.

I do get in a fair amount of mellow  :syf: though.

Yeah I try to keep it pretty low key and chill.  I found these great cds of lullaby versions of Beatles, and various other artists, songs.  Really cool stuff.

So you did it before the baby was born too then huh?

Yeah, and during pregnancy we played a lot more cool adult music. Now like I said it's mostly kids' stuff. Elizabeth Mitchell is great for that, though--very mellow & pleasant.

When I first moved in with my wife we shared music space on a boombox.  Now that I have built a decent system with full audio, visual, and computer integration, I rule the sounds in the house.  She always knows that she can throw in a cd whenever she wants, but she owns maybe 80 or 90 cds worth total.

Whoever mentioned 'hectic jams': Phish isn't playing anything more complex than some of Mozart's best works.

The way I was using the term, it's the set of timbres and loud overtones that make good rock jams 'hectic,' as opposed to the complexity of the composition. I'd associate 'complexity' more with number of notes, level of syncopation, number of chords, changes in harmonic structure, etc.--and here the Mozart comparison is dead-on, I'd say.

Dude, I know! This stuff about the playlist at our home is all about choosing my battles on the homefront, not whether or not my kid can handle the noise--in fact, she's screeching out an "I need a nap and I hate everything" solo jam right now.

My little digression there about what makes music 'hectic' was just that--a digression, only tangentially related to the conversation about kids & music.

Phish is my relaxation time away from family and with friends and for that reason I probably wouldn't bring Jack (7).  However, I'd bring him and Ally (8 days till 4) to some other kind of show.  Eventually I'll bring my son with to Phish, I'm just not ready to be tied down AT ALL yet.  If I want to roam the lot, start talking to strangers, drink beers, etc, I don't want any other responsibility.

On the other hand, as a family, I could see how it'd be alright.  But as others mentioned, especially sub 2 years old, you have to be prepared to leave early.

Same here. Mine's got the "Bag it, tag it" down but kind of muddles through "Sell it to the butcher in the store." However, when we go on a drive, she always wants to hear the "Bag it, tag it" song.  :-)

My daughter makes me sing bathtub gin and/or lawnboy at bedtime; Non-Phish but related, I also get to do "I get a kick out of you".  I think I've got a pretty good way of singing gin as a lullaby.  It's mostly the same but compressed in the spots where there's typically instrumental.  I can never say no.  She also LOVES her purple Phish shirt.  She calls it her phishy shirt - just like yours dad!

I love bedtime. We sing 3 Little Birds and she can do almost the whole thing by herself.

Our recent favorites (I sing to my 5y/old every night) include "Farmhouse".
Also,
Neil Young's "Comes A Time" & "Tell Me Why"
:syf: "Row Jimmy", "Ripple" & "Attics"
Dylan: "Tangled Up In Blue" ("Sing 'rain fallin on my shoes', Daddy")
The Band: "I Shall Be Released"
Wilco: "Hummingbird"

These and a few others are rotated randomly and I sing 2 each night.

i am not, BY FAR, a parent... but i do nanny a 4 month old :)
he's the best!

anyhow.... i've learned that anything, really anything, from Bill Breathes puts this kid to sleep when he's fussy...

i also sing Lizards when changing his diapers to distract him... he loves it...
smiles ear to ear, laughs and does what he can as far as dancing when i hold his hands and let him stand...

it's a three day a week gig... props to you all that do it 356 days a year.

I burned my 2-year-old niece a "Dancing" mix cd for christmas.  I made sure to keep it "kid" and "extremely religious sister & brother-in-law" safe.  Visiting my family for Easter, my brother-in-law thanks me for the cd and plays Ellie's "Favorite Song" off of it, which causes her to come out and dance all around the living room for everyone.

Her favorite tune?  "A Fifth of Beethoven"

I raised both my girls on phish/dead/beatles etc.
I should post my 11 yo daughters ipod library. Its shocking.
I would rather go deaf than to listen to most of the stuff she listens to.
She does have Reba, Bertha, and a healthy contingent of Beatles songs, but the rest...  :frustrated:

My kids love the Beatles. LOVE them. Yellow Submarine, All You Need Is Love, Octopus' Garden... etc. The song they really go nuts for is Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da. I sure hope they hold onto the music my wife and I are sharing with them now. I agree with birdman. I'd rather go deaf than listen to the shit that's passed off as music today. Save a handful of wonderful Indie bands I've discovered in recent years.

I used to sing a slow version of Fee to put my son to sleep when he was a baby. He doesn't remember it, obviously, but laughs every time Millie slices Floyd on the nipple when he hears it now.  :-D

I figure I'll let them choose the direction they want to go with their musical choices as they should have that freedom, imo. Funny thing is...  some of the stuff I thought was cheesy that my parents listened to I have now found to be really, really good music.

I have the same problem with my 12y/old.
I have recently given her, at her request, the entire Beatles catalog for her iTunes.

Don't give up hope.

There will have to be some rebellion from the parents music as kids will go through that stage that leads them to believe we are embarrassing.  But eventually they will come around and realize how great our music is and it will be easy for them to get into it because they heard it growing up.

Sweet bump Mandi.

We just got back from a long weekend in the Adirondacks with 3 generations of my family: 16 adults, 3 kids (2 & under). The baies were all second cousins. Sunday night it was my generation only around the dinner table--ten of us ranging from 36 (me) down to 19, all first cousins, with the first three of the next generation sleeping down the hall. Great times.

I've found Raleigh CL to be a great place to shop...  Lots of Cary/Wakefield parents just trying to dump their crap...

I've had no luck with Plan Toy dollhouses though...

My dad scored a free outdoor playset on VaBch CL, all he had to do was move it.  Its similar to this:

Well, this thread's overdue for an update...

[sweet blog alert]

So since I moved back over the Green Mountains last summer, my kid and I share a fair amount of driving time now. And it probably won't surprise anyone here that I have her on a pretty steady diet of instrumental music (i.e., jams) in the car. So I've started this game to keep her entertained and engaged in the music: once in a while during an instrumental passage, I ask her what she sees in her mind when she hears the music. Just half an hour ago, during an extended lead-in jam to "He's Gone"...

"There's a person walking in the pouring rain with a fancy umbrella, and they're walking their fancy poodle, and there's another person with a raincoat and no umbrella, just standing and watching them. But he isn't sad."

How do they do this? I swear, she can just take apart my heart and put it back together again.

Perfect... you know, just as kids can surprise you, so, too, can parents!

I got a cryptic postcard today... the picture on the front was the Beatles. The text on the back was a nice note signed "G, P, R, & J."

It took me about 20 minutes to figure out... Wait, that's my Pops' handwriting and G, P, R, & J are George, Paul, Ringo, and John.

I had a really bad week last week and my Pops was just trying to cheer me up. I'm 40 and a postcard made me feel like a little kid.

eta... sorry, that's a bit of a touchy subject around here. you'll learn that you don't ask 40 year-olds why they don't have kids. It's usually not something they like to be reminded of because there's usually a reason they've made it this far without any.

This kid is still under three feet and forty pounds, but she takes showers and rides the chairlift. How'd that happen?

Something to do with time, growing up and shit. My youngest is 10, dresses in black and berates her class mates for having poor taste in clothing. And music. O, and don't get her started about pony tails  :rockout:

Something something parenting done right.  :beers:

damn straight, and well done the both of you.

Mine at this point I believe is trying to stop taking naps and sounds like she is going to bust her crib through the floor on to my head as I type.

Stay strong, you're the boss apple sauce.

Kinda get this too having a 15 yr old step son. So polite, he knows music but sticks to his Floyd and beck as his favs. Also starting digging King crimson.  We limit his texts now after he spent all of his texts for the month in one week. Kids.

Introducing the newest paugers.  This is little Cormac and Christian.
Cormac had to be pulled out with a suction cup thingy so he has a little bruise on his head which is almost gone now.
Anywho, they are the greatest thing that has ever happened to me.  <3

Congrats lope and mattstick and any of you other fornicating bastards out there I might have missed.

Proud papa moment for me: first family ski trip last week was a raging success. Had the 8yo on the blues by day 2 and the 6yo (albeit in a harness) by day 3. And they loved every minute. My first time in way too long and I'm psyched to have a new family hobby to get these lil F'ers into.

Note: you NE'ers may (rightfully) scoff at our puny Pocono mountains but it's all we really got around here so suck it.

My son was the kid vocal lead for a performance of Space Oddity at his elementary school's spring performance. His uncle (my brother-in-law) is a 3rd grade teacher at the school and played lead guitar and sang the "Major Tom" parts with him. It was really cool and I'm so proud of my little man.

Here it is, if you're interested. Just posting it for myself more than anything. I would not recommend it for viewing by any non-parents...

Today was a great day for me as a parent.  My daughter is 7, and today was the day that everything clicked and she can now ride a bike.  That, in itself, is awesome.  Then, we're in the car driving, listening to the Fukuoka 2001, and she tells me "I really like this song, because it's spacey."  I turn around, and she's grooving and boogieing in the back seat.  On this coming on top of the last few weeks where she's been singing "More" to herself a few times a day.  And she's also been asking to listen to Dave Brubeck and loves Take Five.  She's just getting more and more awesome as a kid.

kids never cease to surprise/amaze me.  My kid in particular, at 7 years old.  We're driving home from a week long camping trip in NH earlier today.  It was actually a pretty quiet drive, she was just playing some games and doing her thing.  Randomly, she just starts cracking up, laughing in hysterics.  I asked her what was so funny, and she replied "poop jokes never get old, do they".  totally awesome.  And no, poop jokes never get old.

fast forward 45 minutes or so, things are pretty quiet again, and out of the blue she says "if she got more votes, you'd think Hillary would have won, right?"  I really try hard not to talk about politics too much when she's around.  Because at 7, she shouldn't have to worry about that crap.  But kids pick up on things, and she was really excited for Hillary (I let her stay up on election night as long as she wanted, rather than her usual 7pm bedtime).  The stuff that goes through her mind continues to fascinate me.

in any case, awesome camping trip.  And my daughter has now hiked her first of NH's 4000 footers...

7pm bedtime?! that's craisins.  Does bedtime go earlier after toddler stage?  My 1.75yo basically has a 9pm bedtime.  (but thank jeebus he can handle a flexible schedule because we're terrible about sticking to the schedule)

Craisins? We've had a really strict sleep schedule with our almost 2 year old and she's slept through the night from the beginning because of it. We've really only missed the 7 pm bedtime 2-3 times. I thought my wife was insane at first, but it worked so well that we're getting ready to start it again with baby #2.

ETA: I just realized that could come off a little "you're doing it wrong" and that was not the intention.  :-) It has worked really well for us though.

I'm with Keller.  My dudes get later and later.  9 is about when the start getting tired now.  7 is definitely craisins.  They are ready to fuck shit up at 7.

I sometimes push the bedtime to 7:30 or 8 these days, but really, she's tired and ready for bed at 7pm.  She sleeps 11-12 hours, every night.  And it gives me a few hours in the evening to get stuff done, so I want to keep a good thing going as long as possibly can :)  She's always been an awesome sleeper.

That's where I'm at.
Oldest is 7, youngest 3 and they are usually in bed by 7:30 with the odd exception.
It's what they're used to and always seemed to work.

Our six year old's bedtime is technically 8:00 but in practice she isn't usually done with story time and in bed until 8:30.

She wakes up every morning at 6 or 6:30, so no way would I ever put her down any earlier than 8.

Just came across Beat Bugs on Netflix.
Its an animated show about a group of garden bugs who go on adventures and sing Beatles tunes.  Pretty cool.
Just watched the Drive My Car episode which has Chris Cornell singing.

Thanks MBW for recommending this. Both of my girls love it and it is nice to have a decent soundtrack that I enjoy in the background while they're chilling out.
I actually really enjoy the characters too with some adult humour mixed in.
Anything's better than Paw Patrol, right?

We go Bathtime->Towel-time->giant fight to put on pajamas->Read whatever books are the current favorites-->Put kid in crib, listen to him cry for 3 minutes until he falls asleep or shuts up.

So far (2YO as of last saturday) I find that the kid is way more obey-y/less throw-fitty, when there is only one parent/adult around.  When there's extra people you can't get him to focus, and also he already knows to ask for the spoiler "gama-anne?! gammma anne!?"

Totally my experience as well. The nights my wife was out, I'd have her passed out within minutes.
You only have to let em cry it out a few times and they figure it out.

Come on, guys.  Parenting can't be that hard.  A lil nip of scotch in the milk bottle about 8-8:30 should do the trick.

You're welcome.

I agree with Budd.  While age 2-3 can be tough as hell while you are in it, in hindsight it seems like a breeze compared to what I am dealing with now with 8 and 11.

Let them figure it out on their own. They will eventually figure it out. Just be on the lookout when one of them figures it out first and then yaps their gums to the kid who still believes.

My son just walked in with his mates as I was cranking Trespass (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trespass_(album)) at the right volume.

Mate 1: WTF is your dad listening to?"
My son: "Peter Gabriel-era Genesis."
Mate 2: "Ah, my mum likes Phil Collins."
My son: "I bet she does. O, and he doesn't play on this one, right dad?"
Me: "Yup".

Nice, your son knows far more than I do about Peter Gabriel (and Phil Collins for that matter).

So, this happened about six weeks ago.
Life's a bit nutty these days.
As you can see, the gentleman in the photo is not pleased at the seeming lack of west coast fall dates.

Sadie - born May 5 (cinco de mayo) and we took custody August 1 (Jerry's bday)

Was listening to Contact today in the car with my boys, and naturally Union Federal was up next so I let it ride.  About 30 seconds into listening to fish play trombone one of my guys says "Papa this is a terrible song.   This is the worst song I ever heard.". The other chimed in, "this sounds like a cow is mooing in my face!" 😂. I hope they find their way home.

My daughter was a Phish hater from an early age. It wasn't until she got into middle school band that I was able to relate some of the musicality to her.

Then the other day she expressed a newfound love for David Bowie and Ziggy Stardust in particular. She thought that her older cousin turned her on to Ziggy Stardust (that's cute).

Then we had a conversation about Halloween 2016 and all the other times Phish covered David Bowie; that Phish actually has a song called David Bowie.

To which she replied "Yeah but what about the Talking Heads?"

All good things in all good time...

There is no 'paug grandparents thread, and technically I will be step grandparent (I feel like I am cheating, jumping right into grand parent without the parenting part)
but, just found out that will be happening in January 2022.

psyched about it
my wife is going nuts, we will be telling her GM (who will become a great-great GM) this weekend.
congrats!
And I can?t imagine it will too long before a Paug grandparents thread appears. Please just don?t let it be me who starts it.

Our oldest became a teenager today. How in the hell did that happen?
She's made me a better person since the day I met her.
