Hampton '09 was so much fun.

All of the promise of Phish's return, along with an infinitude of questions. Optimism reigned as we walked into the Coliseum that first night and the haters hadn't yet received their haters club satin jackets (which are super dope, btw.) The paug, as you may remember, was a hotbed of that optimism and wonder. The Hampton announcement brought a surge of new members and the return of some who had drifted away and the fountain of speculation flowed like crazy, spawning threads like crazy.

One thread also kicked off the grand Week4paug tradition of the Live Setlist Thread:
Phish.com - From the Road - 2009 [Hampton Shows] ***SPOILER ALERT***

Today, I will kick off the first in a three-part series wherein I shall recap those threads, focusing on the "live setlist" portion of things and with an eye toward what was funny, positions that have changed, and, above all, revisiting the excitement of Phish's return to the stage.

No bullshit, this will possibly lean heavily on my perspective at times but, it's also very much about the happenings in the LST among the folks who were at home.

Just rawk

That was a reply to the cry for updates about Gumbo's well-being and the scene at large. Honestly, I was barely able to handle setlist updates on my Blackberry that night with the shitty mobile browser and even shittier signal. I'd post an update and immediately click the reply button so that, during the song, the reply page could (and would) take its sweet damned time loading. Besides, there was this Phish thing happening. Since Hampton, I've tweeted from shows but never as diligently. Besides, it's never again going to be as important as it was here.

did not expect NICU, this seems to be a extra long first set...

Quote from: fauxpaxfauxreal on March 06, 2009, 09:13:12 PM
Nope...average length... it hasn't hit the hour and a half mark yet.

NICU>Setbreak most likely.

I think that curfew at the mothership is 11:30, and breaking now gives them about 40 minutes or so to talk about how fucking awesome that set was and to prep for the onslaught and killer jams in the second set.

I think they might save YEM for the third night.

So here is what I think we are in for in this second set.

Wilson,Simple,Bowie,Disease,Piper,Strange Design,Antelope and Glide.

Man, there's some fail in that post...

It bears noting that Pie-Guy got the spot for us each night of the run. He's not mentioned in my play-by-play because he was not yet a pauger. Birdman had just introduced him to us that afternoon. (And I'd forgotten his name by showtime.)

It kills me I grew up one exit form hampton and saw every show there from 96 to 1/2/03 and could not be there.  Living out west has its downfall too i suppose.   I literally had tears in my eyes when i saw they opened with fluffhead and divided sky...what a statement!  two compose pieces back to back.

any comments on style of play, how the fluffhead sounded?  i guess we will all hear tomorrow morning.    Be safe those lucky to attend, I can't wait for Alpine!

dear fucking god, did they leave anything for tomorrow?

Just got back from the show, and what a show it was!!!  Monster 1st set...
The fluffhead was well-played, but it was so loud that a lot of the sound was drowned out!!! Be interested to hear what the SBD looks like!  Soo tired..  WHAT A SHOW!!!!!!  :phish: :phish: :phish: :phish: :phish: :phish:

Just got back from the show

as many of you know, this was my first show and to say the least, mind=blown

The energy in that place was like nothing I have ever experienced and the Fluffhead/Divided Sky opener combo blew everyone away

I have absolutely no hesitation in saying that this was the most well polished, and practiced Phish since pre 2000  :-o

The entire show was nearly flawless with the exception of only a few parts (the YEM restart was more humorous to me than dissapointing)

Ill try and post a song by song review soon!

Happy first show WhatstheUse?, MiamiPhish, and Gumbo! You guys got a helluva show (well I haven't heard it yet, but from what I've heard, you got a helluva 1st show). Glad you guys had a good night!

can't really give a song by song review right now but highlights for me were:

-Fluffhead opener played practically flawlessly....right off the ba you knew they meant business!

-Chalkdust had a pretty great peak iirc

-STASH, this was IT....best jam of the night imo, it got way out there and back

-Oh Kee Pah - nearly FLAWLESS!!!

-Suzy, got a little funk going, and page's solo was played on some sort of synth

-Horn, played so beautifully and near perferct iirc

-Tweezer brought the 3.0 Funk!!!!!! that shit was nasty!

-Harry Hood........yah, i cried

Waste, honestly one of the best versions i have ever heard, trey was just ripping through his final solo

Cranking the first set! Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

We'll leave the thread here.
No one has woken up and applied a critical ear to the playing at this point. Already you see notice of the lack of extended jamming, but the enthusiasm still rules.

The vibe at the show was unreal. Probably the most unified audience vibe I'd experienced since the 90s maybe? And, honestly, I'd never experienced an energy like that at a Phish show. Pre-show was just fun. running around the lots... Hampton was familiar yet, now, so different from the last time Phish played. (New lots, Convention center, etc.) And the new friends. Along with the old friends we brought along, we paugers met up and bonded. We celebrated and became friends.

And after the show, sweaty, happy, and tearful, we hugged and got ready to do it again tomorrow!

Awesome thread, really enjoyed reading the reconstituted LST, thanks!

But, I don't think our fans do happily lap it up, I think they go online and talk about how it was a bad show.

I've been coming to where I am from the get go
Find that I can groove with the beat when I let go
So put your worries on hold
Get up and groove with the rhythm in your soul
