Title: King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Thread
Post by: mistercharlie on April 07, 2018, 10:11:55 AM
I'm not sure why we don't have a thread for these guys yet. I know a bunch of us like them, so I created a thread to share what I discovered this morning.
There is a website that has been streaming Nonagon Infinity on an endless loop since it's release. I can't believe it took me this long to hear about it, but I will surely be using it at work quite a bit. It's http://nonagoninfinity.com/ (http://nonagoninfinity.com/)

It's an amazing idea! Nonagon is the one album that I prefer to listen to digitally rather than on vinyl because the flips ruin the endlessness.

Speaking of vinyl... My ATO 'Gumbo Stew' Gumboot Soup came yesterday (a few days late), and I noticed that the catalog number is ATO0420.  :smoke:

It definitely has a nice mellow sound that I can't get enough of. I even have my boss listening to it now after he heard half of the album while in my office one day.

They'll be back this summer.  Kind of want to go, but last time I saw them at the same venue it was kind of a bummer.  Hicks and I were spoiled by the first venue we saw them at.  Still have not played the ;last two releases but I'm looking forward to cracking them open.

You've still not even heard Polygondwanaland?!?!? That album is a modern-day prog masterpiece! Gumboot's pretty damned good too, but Poly is the shit!

I'll get the others on ATO when they come out here for much cheaper. After the Flightless sale started the ATO colors leaked.

The new album has a yet another sound to it and will be released 4/26. I love how they change styles for every album. You can preview a minute of every song on the new album, Fishing for Fishies, on this site. (https://ca.7digital.com/artist/king-gizzard-and-the-lizard-wizard/release/fishing-for-fishies-9101672)

Also, Murder of the Universe kinda sucked and is definitely skippable IMO.

But... Vomit coffin. I actually really like that album for some reason. Although I do find the narration track a little exhausting.

Digging the new album for sure. Almost has a  sketches of new Brunswick feel to it. Stoked for whatever album planet b is on. Seems like it'll be a bit different than everything else.

So this morning they put two live shows up on Bandcamp with all the proceeds going to help the fires in Australia. $10aud, which is just under $7usd. I bought them both for just under $15. Very worth it in my opinion.

One of them ends with a 30 minute Head On/Pill!!!

There's a bit of Moby Dick in Open Water. Even better, the Head On/Pill is a huge medley with lots of fluid jamming. I tried taking notes, but I couldn't keep up. ( :smoke: ) It was at least 'Hot Water -> Altered Beast -> Cellophane -> Flouride -> Am I In Heaven -> Cyboogie jam -> Rattlesnake Jam ->'. That's where I started losing track of what was going on.

These are some great shows!

There's some things going on in the Gizzverse later today/tomorrow!

A new album, "K.G."!

A new live album, "Live in San Francisco '16"!

A new label/non-label for US & EU releases on Gizzverse.com!

My wallet is going to hate me tomorrow!

I'm sure that everyone knows about the 8 albums, 1 Old Stuff, 2 Demos and 5 live, that Gizz dropped, Polygondwanaland-style, to be pressed by anyone that wanted to try pressing it. Well, I tried my hand at getting my own pressing of the early recordings, Teenage Gizzard, pressed on what I'm calling 'Gizzmas Splatter' vinyl. Neon Yellow with Magenta and Clear Green 2-color splatter. If I get 300 sold in the next 30 days, it gets made, if not it doesn't and no one gets charged. If you want to help me see it get made, that's cool. If not, that's cool too. I'm just sharing it everywhere so that I can have a Gizz album on my shelf that I had a hand in making!

https://qrates.com/projects/22164

If I end up profiting off this pressing, I plan on using the profits to buy Gizz/Flightless goods, so I can feed my vinyl habit and also give the money to the musicians who made the music.

L.W. is AMAZING! I've already listened to it twice today. I can't wait to get in my car and listen to it at high volume, and then home so I can listen to it with my headphones!

Vinyl pre-order is still a few weeks away, I've read.

Anybody else addicted to Butterfly 3000 yet? I see Catching Smoke getting them some mainstream love. It's such a catchy tune, and the subject matter is pretty nice taboot.

I grabbed the Mariposa 3000 edition during the on sale. Anyone else grab one, and if so... what language did you get?

I dig it. Sure, it's got some cheesy moments, and it kind of sounds like Gizz doing a Tame Impala impression. But it's catchy and a perfect 'drinking on the back deck' kind of album.

There are a lot of elements that remind me of my favorite parts of Polygondanaland.

Late reply here, picked up Butterfly 3000 on vinyl recently, been digging it.  Between wax and streaming, I've heard the album 10x since Sat:P
On first listen I heard tunes that sound like Radiohead, Prince, and early Pink Floyd.  Overall the album sounds like Stu took a week or two holiday in Eastern China and ran with it.  Best Gizz album since Sketches of East Brunswick.

Noob here.

I've avoided this band. Not for any particular reason than my wallet. I've discovered over the last couple of years that I actually like buying music and get more out of it when I do. And buying music means physical formats when available.

And every time I go through the stacks at the record store there's 50 million King Gizzard albums staring back at me. I never know where to start.

So if you could advise one release that would help King Gizzard "stick" for a neophyte, what would it be.

No streaming, you're actually advising me on a financial decision. I like that gamble.

Their style varies from album to album. My favorite is Polygondwanaland. It's their Prog Rock album. If you like prog, I'd start there.

I'm In Your Mind Fuzz is a great starter, too. It's the first album of theirs I heard. It gives you more of a feeling for the band.

That's three album suggestions in two posts.

Hicks is more declarative in his suggestion. Senor Charles more nuanced in his approach.

That narrows it down a little bit.

One album advertised as prog. That's interesting.

One album advertised as "opening the gate": That's prog AF.

Nab, Hicks made a good suggestion. Nonagon Infinity is Amazing! It's a 9 song album that never ends. Every song feeds into the next song and the last song on the album feeds into the first song. It would make a great 'Door Opener' for a Gizz fan.

Yeah unfortunately you don't get the full "infinity" effect with vinyl, which blew my mind the first time I heard it as I had no idea. Anyway, it was my intro to the band and now I have at least 10 albums by them.
Title: Re: King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Thread
Post by: natronzero on December 07, 2021, 11:43:05 AM
Nonagon is a great starting point for all the reasons these guys mentioned, and it's sort considered their "classic" album if they have one.

Poly is probably my favorite Gizz album, but definitely denser and I think takes repeated listens to really digest. But man is it rewarding when it really sinks in.

I love the whole I'm In Your Mind Fuzz album now, but at first only the titular suite really grabbed me.

Outside of those, I'd nominate Fishing For Fishies. It's accessible, but a still a little proggy, has multiple boogie songs, environmental themes, and it has a perfect flow from start to finish.

Just checked my Discogs to see my count, as I love collecting the different pressings of Poly, and I have 90 alubms/45's by Gizz!!! That means I have more Gizz vinyl in my collection than some people have all the vinyl in their collection. I guess you could say I have a problem.  :wtu:

I recommend Quarters!, Sketches of Brunswick East, and Butterfly 3000.  Rarely see Quarters in stacks around here, seems pricey online.  If you see it, snag it.  Sketches was my intro to King G.  They collaborate with another band, it runs well as one collective piece, partly inspired by old film music.  Butterfly is new this year.  Listened to it again today.  It has an Eastern China sound.  Excellent album.

Those three albums, plus Paper Mache Dream Balloon, represent to lighter/smoother side of Gizz. Sketches is one of my favorites as well. I'd put it 3rd behind Poly and Flying Microtonal Banana.

Looks to have been wearing a badge too, so I wouldn't be surprised if he met up with the Gizzard guys as well. Story I've heard about when they met in '19 is that he invited them to a TAB show, so maybe they returned the gesture.

On another note, I have to admit I've been reluctant, maybe borderline curmudgeonly, about using the "J" word when it comes to what Gizz is doing.
But then 2 weeks ago at Red Rocks they dropped this 19 minute blistering, exploratory version of The River, and I'm ready to say I was wrong...

There's definitely some improv going n. The songs on IDPLMAL are all pretty long, but they still take them for a walk in this session.

Yeah, they've always jammed a little and have been going further and further that direction in the last year or so. But they've also got a thing for long, complex arrangements, and I think they've really started composing songs that lend themselves to being jammed and extended.

They are at the top of the game right now. They are really pushing limits right now esp with all the releases. Insane work ethic.
The 3 hour red rocks show was amazing. One of the best shows I seen all year. Head on/pill was insane. def had some improve sections in there but more of a extended driving guitar riff/beat than type 2 stuff. Got a print too.
Changes and omnium gatherum are in regular rotation.

I have a hard time wrapping my head around and 'Early' and a 'Late' show at Red Rocks. Just how early is the early show to give them enough time to get ready for the late show?

Midway through the Gaia drum solo from Forest Hills there are some chompers chompin', and one of them says
"It's like metal...jam...I don't think they could do twelve shows at Madison Square Garden....BUT..."

The older I get, the more appealing a 1:30pm show sounds! I would love that!

One of my favorite recent (if 2017 is recent) concert experiences was a Portugal. The Man show. They were the opening act for Vance Joy, and neither the wife or I wanted to see him, so we saw P.TM and bounced. We were home by 9, it was perfect!

This hr+ video has been getting a lot of play in my house today. Wild to think this was over 6 yrs ago and they have only gotten better.

They've been heading towards 'jam band' status for some time now and I think tonight they finally achieve it with their first Milward poster. And I won't lie... I actually kinda dig it. If Milward puts up an AP on his site I may grab one.

video is a little stalkerish - but I can't help smiling at Trey getting down to King Gizz at Red Rocks!

Yeah... he's 100% in the "family" zone with barriers and security making sure he's never "in the crowd." Still, cool to see him getting into it. Sucks to never get to "see" a Phish show, so it's gotta be a treat to see another great show.

I feel that's just how I look at a rock show.

He was in the soundboard section the whole time pretty much where the underground tunnel from backstage comes out in the venue at Red Rocks.
My friend Lane from app state was the one who made the  Gizz/phish shirt he was wearing in his post on the gram. I was chillin with Lane during the opener and got to go up n meet Trey with him in between opener and gizz. Didn't say anything other than hey and got to dap him up and he gave me a hug haha. My friend lane talked to him for a little about the merch and gizz. Was surreal to say the least.

That sounds awesome, Erik! Getting to see Gizz at Red Rocks and meeting Trey at the same show is a true dream. Also, I have your friends Phish/Gizz shirt and wear it all the damned time! Tell them 'Great job'!

The new album, PDA, goes HARD AS FUCK!!! It's like they took the Trash-Metal of Rats Nest and added in a TOOL vibe. So good! It's been out for about 4 hours now and I've already listened to it thrice.
