Those MSG dates are gonna be bananas with all the people in town for the NYC Marathon that weekend.
As in hotels and congestion.

Any locals interested in the DC show?
I probably have a calendar conflict but... I can look into it if anyone else is trying to go.

I'm assuming they'll be announcing more dates?  Not much of an actual tour.

yeah I would assume so, hoping for a CO date.
Def looks like there is space to add like 4-5 midwest dates and a couple west coast ones before NYE

Looks to me like they're still testing the waters.
Future dates contingent on current slate presales...

I do, in fact, have a conflict on my calendar but have been given a pass if I choose to accept.

Anyone else trying to rock this?

I just dont have any interest in this tour.  I guess if these shows somehow far exceed my expectations and the line up brings something different then I guess I would hit the ATL show but I dont see that happening.

I just checked TM and the DC show is looking fairly full. I doubt they would be adding dates if sales were tepid.

MSG sold out instantly so they added a second date. I think it will sell fine.

So combining those posts, full tour looks like this:

Fall Tour/Halloween/NYE

10/29 - Albany, NY @ Times Union Center
10/31 - New York City, NY @ Madison Square Garden
11/1 - New York City, NY @ Madison Square Garden
11/5 - Philadelphia, PA @ Wells Fargo Center
11/6 - Washington, DC @ Verizon Center
11/10 - Worcester, MA @ DCU Center
11/11 - Buffalo, NY @ First Niagra Center
11/13 - Columbus, OH @ Nationwide Arena
11/14 - Greensboro, NC @ Greensboro Coliseum
11/17 - Atlanta, GA @ Phillips Arena
11/18 - Nashville, TN @ Bridgestone Arena
11/20 - St. Louis, MO @ Scottrade Center
11/21 - Minneapolis, MN @ Target Center
11/24 & 25 - Broomfield, CO @ 1st Bank Center
11/27 & 28 - Las Vegas, NV @ MGM Grand Garden Arena
12/27 - San Francisco, CA @ Bill Graham Civic Auditorium
12/28 - San Francisco, CA @ Bill Graham Civic Auditorium
12/30 - Los Angeles, CA @ The Forum
12/31 - Los Angeles, CA @ The Forum

Greensboro falling on a Saturday seems a little more likely for me than the DC show, but I think I'm in the same boat as others, in that I want to hear some of this before deciding. I don't feel like tickets should be too tough, but who knows.

Mayer is kinda heavy on the wankery in that clip and not focusing on the comp'ing.  The coolest part of the China -> Rider segue is the alternating comp'ing between Garcia and Weir.

Parts of them. Played an hour of the first night yesterday.  The Mason's Children was brutal....but a lot of it is solid.

I haven't listened back yet and didn't attend Santa Clara (watched though) and have to agree about the Friday show.

What source(s) do people recommend for re-listening to the Chicago shows?

it's awesome to finally see you kinda butt hurt/defensive about some music for the first time in like 3-4 years on this board.

I don't think (at least I'm not) questioning Mayer's ability to play the music.  That 45 second clip he runs Trey off the stage, and that pains me to admit that, but he's def doing shit Trey at 51 cannot do.  I think the only thing up in the air is if he finds himself in some hauntingly dark space of improvised music like a dark star, what's he going to do?  At least I am wondering that.  Even those Phil shows where he sat in, he kinda took a back seat once the music really took off in an unknown direction, and as for the composed parts, he handled himself really well.  Regardless of what else I will see before they hit here, I'm going to the Atlanta show.  I'm curious enough to be drawn to see these guys play together.

uh... wut? I'm not hearing anything that outshines Trey in that clip...

I definitely question Mayer's ability to play the music of :syf:  Sure, he can rip some blues but I've never heard him do anything similar to what the dead do/did. I feel like he'd be totally lost in any deep typeII jams.... Which makes me think there won't be much jamming with this Dead incarnation. Just Bobby and John playing some blues rock.

Not much mention of Oteil.
Is he gonna do the catalog justice?
Phil was the anchor in that GD lineup with Trey.
It's just gonna be weird.
As much as I love John Mayer, this whole thing doesn't appeal to me despite having those 2 MSG shows close to home.
Title: Re: The Dead & Company Fall Tour/Halloween/NYE Run
Post by: rowjimmy on October 01, 2015, 07:04:16 PM
Couple points:

Mayer sounded ok when he played with Phil a little while back. He was, however, playing third fiddle much of the time.

Otiel is great. Not sure how he'll do though. Those are some big nerdy shoes to fill.

That said, after watching the Billy with Weir set followed by Phil with Carlos from Lockn, Phil is the guy that pushes the X-factor far more than The Other Guys (with the exception of Mickey).

A clue of how Oteil will sound is likely in the KBM shows from a few years ago.
Otiel's great - he is no Phil but then nobody is. Agree with RJ that Phil is the FORCE.

I think Mayer played a Dead tune at Crossroads (2014?) and it was actually pretty good. I think I have a copy on my accessory HD - I'll try to dig it up this w/e if anyone wants to hear it.

ETA - wasn't a GD tune, but a jam from a GD tune in one of his songs. I'll try and dig it up.

anyway, the post GD projects that I like best are the ones that sound most UNlike the GD - ie much of the Phil and Friends, JRAD, some of the Jazz is Dead. I don't think this one will fill the bill for me

Well I know I was talkin' shit but I'll eat my words hear.

Just watched a bunch of YouTubes from the Albany show and Mayer did not suck.

Even though none on the stuff I watched was 'type 2' jamming per say, the guy sounded pretty on point.

Went to the show last night, and John Mayer blew away my expectations of him, i thought he sounded really good. They are sounded good. Except my one complaint is how some songs are so much slower. The Touch of Grey encore was played really well, but just a such a slow pace there was not that much energy. BUt all around i thought the show was good, besides the terrible segue from Slipknot > Franklins.

Also i would not of minded if Mayer sang on some more songs. I thought his voice sounded really good on the ones he did sing.

Alright, so after further inspection here -- My initial thoughts on Mayer were kinda re-confirmed.

The dude CAN play, I'm def more impressed with his technical ability and creativity that I thought I would be. It's not just blues licks either, he's doing some nice stuff in his solos.

BUT, it still is way more of him 'soloing' on top of the band, than 'full band jamming'.  Which, that was only really noticeable in the songs that usually go deep type-2 (like that Playin' jam above) -- it definitely didn't feel like the music could veer off in any direction at any given moment. I'm not sure Mayer understands how to jam like that.  But, like I said, those instances are the minority.  His playing style works pretty well for the majority of Dead tunes that are guitar solo based 'jams' over a set progression.

I hate slow Bobby. Way to suck the energy out of a room. Slow wharf rat is the TTE of D&C.

I saw him with Stanley Jordan at the Roseland in 2012, I bet that was great.
I think it's pretty special and fortunate for us that we are still getting solid music from these guys, whatever incarnation that may be.
It's not like they don't attract serious talent wherever they go.

Dude, John Mayer is the fucking shit with this music.  For me, this is the most vital post-Jerry stuff I think I've ever listened to (outside of Phil and Friends).  Even The Dead in 2009 wasn't even CLOSE to being this good.

Listening to 11/5/15 "Here Comes Sunshine" right now.  Dude is just killing it.  They goof the entrance to the music after the acapella intro, but that's okay.

He's like a groovier Jerry.  Sort of.

This iteration of Dead music is 90% Oteil for me. The rest I could take or leave. Mayer is adequate... let me rephrase, he's playing with a lot more confidence than he should. He is damn good and does not take anything away from the music. He's exactly what's needed to hold the whole thing together. That should not be understated. He's doing great. But he's doing about as great as Fake Jerry always did with Dark Star or Further.

But as far as bringing new ideas to a Dead setting... exactly one person on that stage is doing that. Oteil from Egypt. He is the fucking man. I mean, he is making this shit fucking interesting as hell. It's enough to make me listen, honestly.

Made the trek out to Worcester last and rocked out with Birdman, sis, and SF.  Overall, super glad I went -- Had a great time.

I totally will give credit to Mayer where due -- The guy learned the catalog and can play his ass off, didn't really hear a sour note out of him all night.  He's super fluid and really nailed the 'Jerry Tone' -- There was one little segment of UJB jam where things really took off for a second. I dug that. I def have more respect for the guy now.  With that all said, I wasn't exactly blown away by anything he did. I still don't know that he can "type 2" jam in the way we all think of that term. He's really just soloing over everything -- Very rarely did I hear Mayer play off of the others.  It was always Oteil or Chimenti improvises around Mayer's solo. Also, Mayer singing Terrapin was just so strange to me. Not bad, just strange.

I will say, Mayer sure wasn't the weak link on stage.  Mickey Hart might as well not be there, he's practically inaudible. Kreutzman can barely hold it together.  Bobby is also kinda hard to pick out in the mix -- he's not really doing to much these days. The other 3 were the life of the music. Was pretty cool to see Oteil up there -- Not sure his style and/or is super fitting for the music but he's doing his thing and doing it well.

All and all, good times were had.... kinda wish Trey and Phil were up there though...  :syf: :phish:

Chimenti is boss too.

Hmmm... I re-listened to last night and I didn't really dig it. The moments that I thought were great fell flat upon re-listen.  It wasn't full band jamming.  My absolute favorite moment of the night occurred during the UJB jam, yet, it was just 10 seconds of Mayer/Oteil playing a bunch of notes w/o any real musical backing as a 5 piece.

I got there during Sugaree due to a combination of familial obligations, traffic, and a startling lack of parking available anywhere near the venue after the show had started. I agree with  :wtu: that there was nothing mindblowing, though I also enjoyed that little liftoff during UJB. However, I actually enjoyed the way that Mayer was playing off of Bobby throughout the night. I think he deserves some credit for learning a lot of music that he is not that familiar with, unlike some of these other lead players in Dead-related bands who have been listening to this stuff for decades.

Anyhow, I had fun at the show. It helps that I was miracled the day before and did not have high expectations going in. Now, if I had to have paid even face for the show, I might've been sightly disappointed afterward. Without Phil, I think Bobby is the alpha, and I think we all know what that means as far as the "jamz" are concerned...

After listening to some Dead & Co and now these Fare Thee Well boards, I always thought Kreutzman's playing was "loose" to kinda let mickey fill in, but its almost so loose and slow hes like off beat or barely holding the band together, he seems like hes either missing a beat or falling behind.

Yeah, I would say his old style of playing was loose, in the best way possible.

Now it's so loose it's kinda falling apart.

Everytime I see it during The Dead, I always wonder if I followed the Dead, how many hours I would have spent a tour just wandering the hallways or in the bathroom during Drums/Space since that is what I did during D/S for most the Dead recreated groups.

Drums and Space kicked ass in Worcester. Oteil on a third set!

although, I can't exactly tell what is a pre-recorded loop playing behind them and what is real...

I find the Neal Casal setbreak jams compelling in an odd way, too.

I'm not prepared to explain it just yet, but it has something to do with an unhurried, no-fuss approach to the sonic palette and exploratory sensibility of  :syf:  music, full of gestures towards more recent music influenced thereby.

Definitely an accurate description. I was totally digging it, as well as the tapping stuff Mayer was doing in the space section...

I ended up buying a ticket shortly after posting that.  I was checking out TM and I pulled a floor seat ticket with a spot right in front of the SBD.  $120.  ouch.  But I figure what the hell.  I'll pay the price and take the ride.

"play from your fucking heart"  -Bill Hicks

That's all I could think last night in regard to John Mayer.  I think the guy is a phenomenal guitarist.  He is the epitome of an excellent student of music.  His ability to comprehend the complicated nuances of Jerry Garcia's guitar playing far surpasses anyone I have seen in that slot (and before all the Trey apologists coming running in here all butt hurt and defensive - I don't think Trey qualifies in this comparison because he never tried to sound like Garcia).  Mayer has an excellent command of his instrument.  From double finger tapping weird ass arpeggios in Slipknot, to comp'ing some incredible chords for Jeff and Oteil to play on top of as he sits comfortably in a pocket.  To straight nailing difficult passages of ascension up and down the fret board.  He can do it, and at times it taps into the uncanny sound of the original Jedi.  From a technical standpoint, he's a perfect fit.  He can move a crowd like few well versed front man.  I haven't seen energy like that (excluding FTW) ever at a post Jerry show.  The crowd was fucking sucking at his tit.  And juicy wads of mayer musical cum were dousing the audience left and right.  He had them in the palm of his hand.  Weir knows this.  Mickey knows this.  Bill knows this.

The show was well played.  It was well received.  I got responsibly high (as in I got high enough to remove my ego and let the music in).  I liked it.  But I also walked away thinking the guy with all these going well in this band, he doesn't play from the heart.  He plays to the crowd, and what he thinks the crowd wants to hear.  And it's a hat tip to him in being able to understand the music of the dead that well to do this.  You can tell this guy has spent 100's of hours diving into the Grateful God Damn Dead.  But with all of that time, I think he missed the most rudimentary and fundamental component of the dead - sincerity.  Garcia could roll his balls out on stage with a mac truck and take down 50k people on an epic night, and then the next night look like he had been neutered and left to be size shamed by the crowd.  That type of honesty speaks way more volume than any level of musical proficiency.  I don't think Mayer grasps that type of vulnerability.  Perhaps because he's never suffered in the sense Garcia has (which for Mayer may be more of a blessing than a curse) and to me it really showed.  I paid $120 for my ticket.  I don't regret that.  I'd go again and I'd probably pay around that again for a really good seat.  For what may seem like a lot of negativity, I also have a lot of perspective that it is still a hell of a lot better than 90% of the music out there in my opinion.

Good review Ramz, Im still on the lookout for a cheaper ticket, 1rst bank is honestly pretty tiny for this group, 7k ppl, cheapest face value is 95 bucks most expensive for GA Floor is like 140 so thats a little steep for me at the moment since thats the price of like a phish NYE ticket, and I have a couple other shows coming up that I need to get tickets for. If it was at pepsi center tickets would be cheap and affordable for me, but the sound would suffer.
I have been digging John Mayer's playing from what I have heard, hope I can score a cheaper ticket day before or day of for like 50-60. Sounds like a good experience, and I feel like if they keep the steam going, with NYE as well, they might get back together for summer dates, hopefully a Red Rocks date as that place is a couple thousand more than 1rst bank.

I wouldn't bet on a cheap ticket.  While last night didn't sell out, it also was far from empty.  Phillips holds 18k, and the place was 90% full.  Lots of fingers in the air last night, and no extras around (or at least cheap extras).  People ended up having to go buy at the box office last minute.  There is a following too.  There were a good 1k-2k just hanging out last night.  I've never seen downtown Atlanta immersed in a shakedown street.  It was pretty awesome.  Some mafia wooks had a tank going preshow right by a bar.  People walking in and out of the bar with balloons.  It was unadulterated debauchery at its finest.

You pretty much articulated my same thoughts.

Mayer sounds like he's playing what he thinks the audience wants to hear (and is doing a good job of that) but I'm not sure he's playing from his heart.

all this sounds good....I think hes having a lot of fun on this tour and being in this role, im interested to see what he takes away from this tour and if he absorbs any of these aspects to his music. When he mentioned his album he almost sounded disdainful when he said oh its kind more poppy popular music...

Ummm. Typo?

http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/7326306/john-mayer-grateful-dead-company-interview

Weir, meanwhile, spoke about a cosmic, out-of-body vision he had at the end of last year's tour, and then a subsequent dream, that indicated Dead & Company could even outlive some of its primary members.

"We were playing...and suddenly I was viewing this from about 20 feet behind my head, and I looked over at John from that piont of view and it was 20 years later and John was almost fully gay. I looked over at Oteil and his hair was white. I looked over to my left and Jeff's hair was all gray." And when he looked to where he, Hart and Kreutzmann would be, "it was new guys, younger guys holding forth, doing a great job...playing with fire and aplomb....It changed my whole view of what it is that we're up to. I find myself wondering, 'Well, what are they gonna be saying about this new approach or this honoring of this tradition? What are they gonna be saying about that in 200 or 300 years at the Berklee School of music?' That's the kind of stuff that goes through my head now because this legacy here, there's a chance now that they'll be talking about us in years to come. So I find it incumbent on myself to think in those terms."

Hilarious typo aside, I predicted the legacy of Grateful Dead bands passing into future generations back in the 90s.
Kind of glad to see it happening.

Well, it hasn't happened yet... I just don't know if a GD cover band without Bobby, lead by John Mayer, would be something that could draw.

If you'd predicted that John Mayer would be leading the way, that would have been really impressive.

Didn't predict Mayer, that's for sure. Even if I had, I'm not sure I'd admit it.

It's too soon to see if my vision plays out but it's certainly on track.
JRAD (whatever you think of them) is an example.
People (Russo) who've played with elements of the real deal carrying the torch to new generations and giving the repertoire their own spin is what I'd imagined. Circles 'Round The Sun promises to be another such thing. I think Phil & Friends will, in time, prove to be a significant contribution to this sort of thing, given all the players he's worked with. I don't see it as one band, the way Bobby did in his dream, I see it as a growing army of adherents spreading the gospel.

Right, I guess similarly, the JGB still tour.

Phil & Friends is an interesting idea, I don't really see that being able to continue on after Phil though.

As I was trying to suggest, it's not about that band continuing. It's about the people who have moved across that stage over the past 17 years carrying on with the spirit and the material.

Phil's said a lot of similar things in the last 20 years, too. I think I'm mostly remembering interviews from the early aughts, when he was getting started with the P&F thing?

I think what RJ is saying, and what's maybe more unique is that the GD stuff going forward could have more of a "Grateful Dead Family" connection, where guys who played in bands with the founding members of The Grateful Dead will be the ones who form bands and pass along those vibes to future heads.

Really though... when is HoloJerry making an appearance?

In the oral bio This Is All A Dream We Dreamed Jon McIntire said no one in the Dead camp was mean to Donna because of her previous experiences as musician in Muscle Shoals AL etc.  The one song where I think she sounds good singing is the Scarlet - Fire segue from 18March1977.

Tour opener in Charlotte on Friday was fun times. [Jambase writeup (http://www.jambase.com/article/dead-company-kick-off-summer-tour-pnc-music-pavilion-charlotte)] I don't much care for how slooooooow this band is most of the time, and it's amusing watching Mayer ham it up and try to take things from zero to 100 in about half a measure, but all in all, good stuff. Nearly 25-minute Eyes to open the second, even. Bigger crowd than I expected -- sold out or nearly so. And a good crowd, too.

I guess Mayer's previous contract had something to do with the band not releasing any SBDs, but I guess they finally cleared that up and signed a deal with nugs.net. But $16?!

Also, whats a DSD file? It's $45

Crazy life I have lately and will update soon now that I know work doesn't ban this site.

Anyhow. Work things came up with the man friend and two other friends I have tickets for to this show Friday night at Deer Creek.
I'm cool with going by myself but I want these tickets to go to people I know could use them and wouldn't otherwise get to go :)

anyone want them?
I don't want the money; I just want them used. (I also have a camp ground right there I'll more than likely not be using.)

Don't you have like, a million records, a billion albums on your computer, and approximately infinity Phish/GD shows at your disposal?

NEED. MORE.

Yes, but for $$.  I am trying to get the Portland show, but don't want to pay $15 for an MP3.  I have not looked too hard, but have not seen any liberated sBDs on other sites (Lossless Legs).  Will let you know if I find any.

The Portland show was unreal, possibly the best post-Jerry line-up I have seen.  In a lot of ways, I liked this line-up better than GD50.  Some things I liked better about GD50, but I would put it up there with that in a second.  I was surprised.

I know Phish isn't on the archive, but I can tell you that D&C is pulling as many "downloads" as any current band on the archive.  downloads also include streaming as well so consider that.

one other note, DSO is also one of the more popular downloads, at least over a lot of bands anyway.

I should also add that JRAD is pretty damn popular too.

no opinion attached, just facts based on what I upload and see statistics on.

Listening to the May 27 show from Vegas and these guys are actually sounding really rehearsed. I don't find the songs seems slowed down at all and I hate to say it but it's one of the better reincarnations of the Dead I've heard. Mayer's tone is awesome and the guy is pretty on point with his runs. Bob seems like he's 10 years younger than he is.
Color me impressed.

First set was a total snoozer.  Bedtime Dead is what I called it at setbreak.  After that, though, the second set gradually picked up in pace and got weird in a good way quite a bit.

Second night first set had WAY more energy, as did the second set.

MSG Amex Presale tix are ridiculously expensive. nosebleeds are $100 behind the stage only, 200 level behind the stage $150. 100 level behind the stage $200. 100 level side sections in front of the stage $350 - $500, rear floor sections $650. Didn't see any front floor.

Are these prices for real? Holy fuck!!!!

It was not like that for the D.C. Show.

I was poking around Columbus Tix.  Saw vip floors for $700 a pop, but also saw decent 200 levels for $55 each.

There are some VIP and platinum ticket prices and shit that are bonkers.
This was a birthday present for myself so I am happy with my not-cheap non-VIP floor seat.

The problem is, it's $150 plus for seats anywhere in the main level of the arena here. The upper levels where the price comes down are just awful.. sound-wise anyway.

Yeah, it's worth waiting until day of show.  For Portland I told my wife to go on the AMEX presale and she bought floors.  The pair was $375!  I said fuck that and sold them the same day on COT for like $360 because I didn't want to deal.  Like Hicks said, we ended up with good tix for $40.  The show wasn't even sold out and they had bleeds for like $75 from the box office.  Depending on the venue, you can prob just buy shitty seats and upgrade when you get in.  All that said, it was a really good show and I am glad I made the effort, if only for drums/space.

Did you get the tickets outside the venue? I'm starting to wonder if people bring extras to shows anymore in the age of Stubhub and COT.

Yes...I don't think online ticket sales has really hampered scalpers/fans with extras

Decided to drop my $$ on tickets for this weekend's PGA Tour Championship down here.

Just looked at 11/29 at Philips.  Hooooooleeeeee shiiiiiiiiit.  Pit at $700? Non-Pit floor seats at $220+? Total nose bleeds at $75.

Yeah, um, hell no!

It was not like that for the D.C. Show.

We ended up with 4th row floors through the AMEX Pre-Sale.  While it is a lot of loot I'm generally fine with paying $150 for 4th row.

I'd rather pay $150 for 4th row than $75 for 400's.

That's reasonable. When I bought the pair for Portland from AMEX, the floor, or best side tix ended up being like $380 for the pair.  It was too much for me.  But they put on a great show.  You're stoked.
