Title: HBO GO
Post by: VDB on February 13, 2013, 10:45:22 AM
I haven't really gotten much use out of this app so far, mostly because I don't usually like watching long-form videos on a phone/computer/tablet screen.

Well, hopefully that's all about to change since HBO GO now supports AirPlay via Apple TV (http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/02/12/hbo-go-unlocks-airplay-apple-tv-eventually). Praise jesus! Can't wait to try it out.

Confession: I've never watched The Wire, or Treme, because I didn't get in at the start of those series. And the episode selection of On Demand is never very good. So now, hopefully, I can check that shit out.

I have enjoyed watching the app on my iPad Retina display much more than I thought I would.
If you can stand subtitles, don't sleep on Profugos (Chile - drug running) or Epitafios (Argentina - serial killer) in the Latin America series section.

Wish they had a few more of their (American) series available, but all in all can't complain.

We watch HBO GO quite a bit through the Google TV.  They have a much better movie selection than on demand and then all of the older shows is a huge bonus.  I still check on the Sopranos regularly.

Yeah, having all of Deadwood at fingers length is awesome.

I watched the first episode of Bored to Death last night. It was OK -- amusing if not LOL. With the backlog I have of other shows and movies, not sure if I'll continue this. Anyone else watch this show?

I watched the first three then dropped it from the DVR list. Wasn't doing it for me.

HBO really fucked them over.  Shows get cancelled all the time.  I get that.  But had HBO told them they were cancelled before that second season finale aired, they could have taken out the last few seconds and it would have been a decent ending for the series.  Five minutes in an editing room. . . that's all HBO had to give them.

Same with Deadwood.
If you want to go hunting for it, I believe the writer/creator of Carnivale has published the entire arc of the story for Carnivale on the internet. I haven't read it, but I believe it circulates. I also believe there is a vibrant message board community for that show too.

Carnivale is definitely a gaping hole in the selection within the app.

The insistence that you have HBO as part of a home cable service stunts the profitability of this (and Showtime's) application.

I don't have cable tv and I'm not interested in getting cable tv.  Between the local stations, hulu, netflix, and the internet, I'm never lacking in something to watch.

I'd gladly pay a small monthly fee to use this app, such as the fee I pay for netflix and hulu, but that option is not available.  Instead, they insist that I pay a large monthly fee (a cable subscription+HBO), mainly filled with content that I'm not interested in viewing.

Insistence on an old business model despite the profitability of the new model.  Kinda reminds me of another industry.

So many people are locked into getting their TV for $80/month through a large Telcom.

The difference between the Cable TV industry and the Music industry is the fact that their core consumers are older, and less willing to steal/cheat their way into getting content, also they have agreements with the NFL.

Interesting.

Though, the article seems to treat delivery of HBO programing as an all or nothing proposition.  Maybe I'm a little slow understanding the absolutes of corporate relationships, but it seems there is a little more room for creative delivery strategies than the article presents.

I think this is also an important point:

Though, the music industry has been focused on selling products to those with discretionary income; both older and younger.  The youngest fans still buy the majority of the pop cheese, while the older fans will still shell out $100+ for a Doors box with one unreleased/remastered track.

I see Carnivale is now being offered in the service, so that is pretty awesome.

One on my lasting memories of that show was the whore who offered her anus to her true love as a sign of fidelity to him, so that he wouldn't tread where other men did frequently.

For those who have an Apple TV: HBO GO is now a native app, finally.

I usually put off accepting the constant Apple TV updates because, well, the notification pops up when I'm about to start using the thing. Turns out this latest update was worthwhile. Oh, and Watch ESPN is also now built-in.

My brother-in-law gave us his HBO GO name and password so that we didn't have to find less reputable ways of watching Game of Thrones. Last night I started watching Carnivale with the wife. I watched it when it originally aired, but she's never seen it. I did preface our watching it with 'Are you ok with watching a show that has absolutely no ending?'.

For those who haven't checked out True Detective yet (it premiered on Sunday), you should. HBO has another winner on their hands. Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey are quite good.

Apparently each season of this show will be eight episodes, and the cast, characters and story will change each season.

Only means Terry has lowered his standards. Precipitously.

Seeing some neg reviews about the finale, which is a bit surprising, I thought it went to its logical conclusion. Loved the series. One of the very few shows I've seen recently which rewards multiple viewings. Like a good novel does.

Pretty much all of the negative reviews I saw were from people who expected every little thing to be wrapped up in a bow.  They didn't like the small handful of loose ends, and they also expected a major, last minute plot twist.  I think the big networks have trained many people to expect a very certain, cookie-cutter format with cop shows...and I think the big star power of the show brought in a lot of those "mainstream" viewers.

Anyhow, enough of my snobby metacriticism.  I thought the finale (and the series as a whole) was fantastic.  I'm pumped for next season.  Assuming it gets officially picked up, which I'm sure it will, the creator has given a little teaser about next year's plot.  He said it will be about, "hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system." (http://www.slashfilm.com/true-detective-season-2-plot/)  I'm not quite sure what the hell that means, but I'm glad they're already working on it.

I, too, thought it was a stellar use of the medium. 8 hours of drama allowed for some deep character development, some high tension action, and enough metaphysical bs to keep the blogosphere busy deciphering for months to come. And, honestly, the two stars carrying this thing both put in outstanding performances throughout.

I will probably watch the whole thing again in a few months to pick up all that I missed the first time through.

At a certain point in the series I kinda stopped worrying about the confusing mass of tiny details and disparate threads. I'm not sure if the intention was ever for the audience to keep it all straight, or if it was just to give the impression of a very complex, extended episode. I certainly enjoyed the show for what it was -- as much as everyone had their theories about this reveal or that twist, in the end the series was about the two of them, and it always had been.

Anyone else watch The Leftovers?

I just finished the first season, and while I really enjoyed it, I was hoping for more answers by the end.
Anyone know wtf I just watched?

We made it through 1 episode and never watched it again.

I watched the first season as well, I thought it was awesome.  I don't think we will get a whole lot in the way of answers tho, to me it is more about the characters trying to react to how their world is presently.

Its based on a book, and the first season was the book.  Subsequent seasons will be original content.
I really hope it just doesnt go on and on without answers like Lost.

eta:  the main question I want answered is did Garvey bang his daughters little jailbait friend and will we get to see it, perhaps in flashback.

I kept predicting each week that we would see him taking to his daughter's friend, so we are on the same page with that one. I haven't read the book, but does it end like the season did? I did think that the whole Holy Wayne subplot wasn't explored very well which made me indifferent when he bought the farm. I hate loose ends as well, but I just don't think that they will ever explain the actual disappearance.

The flashback episode was perfectly placed in the season.  Great characters all around.

The season opener on cancer treatment is a must watch.
Essentially the are using smallpox, hiv and other diseases to fight cancer cells.  They are curing completely hopless cases of lukemia and other cancers.  Cancer could soon be eradicated.

hbo go didn't have it up exactly at 9 eastern.  i fiddled around with it for about 10 minutes and it still wasn't up.  so i put in the last episode of season 4 and by the time that was done the new episode was up.  super excited to have pulled that off!  technology is amazing.

yeah, it was about 9:15.  the shows are typically on right at the same time they air, maybe they delayed it due to high demand or something.
either way, chromecast + netflix + the inlaws hbogo login = win.

I was looking up to see if David Simon had any part in this series since its brimming with themes he writes about on his blog and in the wire. And has a lot of casting from the Wire.
He has not part with it but themes are very prevalent. Almost like Serial as a HBO series. Storyline is good but the jail stuff was getting a little over the top at the end of the last episode.

I havent read much about it, but I believe the violence happens and the people that "run" sections of the prison, this prob happens in most prisons around the country, really just burning his bed in the middle of the prison floor that was like damn this kid is hated on the block. Feel bad for him.

After interning in the coroner's office for over a year, I'm sad to say this shit happens all the time.
"turf" issues and showing dominance are the 2 biggest reasons people puff their chest in prisons and get killed.
same like out in the real world....

Just finished The Night Of last night. Tremendously executed and very thought-provoking. It presents, of course, a highly cynical view of the criminal justice system: one marked by a hopeless mix of competing personalities, human indifference and systemic inertia.

Just watched the three seasons of Silicon Valley. That show is brilliant, in its writing of these tech jokes. Mike Judge, to me is like a functional Dan Harmon, where everything he touches just is comedy gold, and the perfect mix of clever deep jokes and a surface level laugh. You can tell the cast has a lot of fun making the show.

I love this show too. Next season starts soon I think. The cast/character interactions are gold. I love the (maybe not so) exaggerated Silicon Valley CEO characters too lol.

One time I sold whatever it is I sell to this guy:

There was more haggling/negotiation than usual, including him linking an Indonesian website that was displaying our product at lower prices than ours and was most certainly not legit.

In any event, sorta felt like I was in an episode of SV for a bit there.

I have watched a couple of those as well. Sarah Silverman guest star one is great.
I also liked the TJ Miller episode in Albany with Artie Lange (speaking of silicon valley).

ok, not directly a hbo go question, but i thought maybe some1 here could help me:

almost a month ago i go ta hbo subscription through ps vue on my playstation. it works basically the same as hbo now as far as i understand.
i have access to live hbo feeds and on demand.

up to today i was able to search for and play entire series from their catalog. like every episode of every season... i thought.
i watched all of westworld, all of GOT was there, etc.
the last week or so i was binging True blood and was through like season 5 when today i logged in and all of those series are completely unavailable. i mean, i cant seem to find anything accessable that was there before.
i searched for some answers online and apparently they do update some of their services with limited on demand offereings, but im confused now how the service i had worked in the first place... i cant figure out whats up now.

any1 have a clue whats up here?

I gave it like 2 episodes and it didn't grab me.  But that was back when it first aired, so maybe I'll give it another shot one day.  I'm overwhelmed with shows now, though, so it'll have to wait until I have more time.  (Having too many quality TV shows is such an awesome "problem.")

I dug Crashing with Pete Holmes and Artie Lang. Pretty inside baseball stand-up comedy stuff, mildly dark but with some heart. Not as funny as Vice Principals, but pretty good. Also, I know this is HBO thread, but if you have access to Showtime Dice's show is hilarious.

I just finished rewatching that start to finish. I watched it when it was on way back when, but then fell out of it some time during S2 which gets a little slow. However, it really picks up at the end of that season, S3 builds nicely on it, and S4-5 are just straight up amazing. So stick with it if you find yourself getting bored with it.

Speaking of The Wire, I feel like Treme often gets overlooked.  I don't think I'd have to sell it too hard to this crowd, considering how it's a music lover's show set in post-Katrina NOLA.  It has almost no "plot" to speak of, at least not in a riviting, fast-paced genre kind of way.  It's essentially all character development.  Lots of real life NOLA musician cameos, too (Trombone Shorty and Kermit Ruffins play themselves...also Jon Baptiste and Stanton Moore make occasional appearances).

And speaking of all this David Simon stuff, his new one, called The Deuce, set in 1970s NYC looks promising.

Now that school has kicked back up again, I actually have time to sit down and watch a few things, so I also watched this today. I was honestly a little bored through it, but I'm assuming it's going to pick up. Not bad, but not as compelling as I thought the pilot might be. I have super high expectations though, like most of us do.

I'm a bit late to the party, but I finally got around to watching The Night Of and I thought it was amazing!
Seeing Nas slowly lose his identity (both literally and figuratively) over the course of those 8 episodes was pretty intense.  All while cranking the paranoia up to 11 by giving half-a-dozen characters serious motive for being the killer.  The kinda/sorta open-ended finale kept with that vibe perfectly, leaving us a bit hazy and with the strong feeling that the only thing certain was institutional failure.
The co-creator and writer, Richard Price -- who was also a staff writer on The Wire -- happens to be one of the best crime fiction novelists around.  So if any of you guys enjoyed The Night Of and are looking for something to read that has a similar tone and feel, I'd recommend any of his novels.  Clockers is an especially good one.

Hell yeah! I watched this series a year or so ago and forgot the ending haha. I might re-watch this soon.
Loved John Turturro character. And Mike K Williams and actor that plays Bodi in there too makes sense with one of the writers from the Wire.
I haven't read Clockers but have seen the Spike Lee movie, will look into his other books too.
I need to finish homicide by David Simon too.

Yeah, they were all fantastic.  MKW tends to steal the show in anything he's in, imo.  I'd be curious to see the original pilot episode with James Gandolfini, it would probably feel like a completely different show.  I honestly can't imagine that role for anyone other than John Turturro now, having seen it that way.  But it would still to be cool to see the JG version.

I've had Homicide on my shelf for years now.  One of these days I plan on reading it.

Barry really surprised me.  I wouldn't have expected it to be one of the best shows on TV but, IMO, it's up there with the best of them.  Really, really well done.

As for Euphoria, I saw a trailer or two and came to the conclusion that I'm simply too old and too sober to be in their target audience.

So, silly question here.

While I'm at home, not working, and my wife is home working remotely the systems she is using drain our internet speeds. I have figured out how to download Netflix movies to stream from my laptop to my TV without using the internet. Is there a way to do something like this with HBO? I really want to finish watching the new season of Curb.

Yeah....nah.

You can w/ Amazon Prime though if you have that...

Ah, I have a program on my laptop called BlueStacks that will make it operate like an Android device. I may be able to watch Curb that way.

I'll add that to the watchlist. When I was a lad, my friends and I found the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack in my parents' record collection, and we spun it unironically for an entire summer, to the grownups' amusement.

These days, my wife and I have been watching Raised by Wolves on HBO Max. It's pretty good sci-fi. I won't give it my most enthusiastic recommendation, but if you have nothing better to do, or just want to watch a lady walk around in a shiny skintight suit at all times, give it a try.

i also started The Soprano's last week.  never seen it before.  i'm through season 1, episode 7...NO SPOILERS.  it's not the best, so far.  i'm ready to bail.  do i stick with it?  it has to get better, right?

i find the episodes to be slow moving.  i get it.  you're in the mob.  your family will have issues with this.  you will have issues with this.  and you guys are all italian with funny nicknames and you love to eat.

so far the most intriguing aspect is the creepy ass priest.

HAHA - I'm almost finished with a run through the whole series - 4 episodes left. I love it for the comedy, but that's a subtle thing sometimes. All the crazy malapropisms are fucking hilarious to me. "Create a little dysentery among the ranks." "We?re in a fucking stagmire." More:

https://youtu.be/gsqf6IY-3oo (https://youtu.be/gsqf6IY-3oo)

Then there are the two greatest moments in television history:

https://youtu.be/QVTVPLN_MRY (https://youtu.be/QVTVPLN_MRY)

and

https://youtu.be/ADrZn6BRTas (https://youtu.be/ADrZn6BRTas)

Seriously, though. James Gandolfini is fucking brilliant throughout. It gets better for sure. There are some really great episodes. The Pine Barrons episode comes to mind... at the time it was the most cinematic episode of television ever. They were really the first to shoot TV on the level of film.

It's slow at times... but it's so worth it.

never really had the time.  never really gave a shit.  i have a little free time this winter, for some unknown reason, so i was looking for something great to get into.  maybe all the hype is hard to live up to.  maybe it's because it's over 20 years old now.  i'll finish out season 1 and reevaluate.

I've been rewatching it over the past month myself.  The 20 years old thing has a bit of weight to it.  I mean it was the show that really started it all.  It took TV to the next level and made it more like a 13 hour movie than isolated 1 hour episodes.  There are some annoying things about it, for sure, but all in all, I'm a huge fan and will probably re-watch it again a few years from now.

That first season, especially the first two thirds of it, was a bit uneven. It was still figuring out what it wanted to be. The tone changes towards the end of those first dozen episodes. I?d give it at least a few into season two. The writing and acting is spectacular. But it?s not a high strung suspense like Breaking Bad. Its pace is more slow.

Sopranos is brilliant. I've watched it all I think 3 times over the years. So my advice is, watch the entire show. Then re-evaluate. If you still don't like it, then watch the entire thing again, just to be sure.

Oh man we cycle through the Sopranos about twice a year at the crib. So good. A lot of characters and development throughout the show.
A modern look of The Godfather of sorts with a glimpse into his mental health.

What? Not even remotely true. Season 3 is very good, but it's the weakest one. And 5 might be the best, unless 4 is.

I watched that clip a little while ago and detached from being caught up in the sweep of the series, it works really well. And I think it does have a timeless vibe to it that I dig, could be any family, in any diner on a Friday night.

And without getting too spoilery, the somewhat ambiguous nature of it immortalizes Tony.

I remember the outrage at the time and I kind of defended the ending. I liked it.

Years later, it pisses me off for some reason. It leaves me feeling the same way I did the first time a Harry Hood went unfinished. I was pissed.

If it doesn't end there, then it simply can't end.

I think the point is that it brings the show right back to its main idea and leaves you with that.

My rewatching of the series never really ends.  I'll watch a season over the course of a week or two when the mood strikes me, and then I'll come back to it months later when the mood hits me again and pick up with the season I left off on.  Eventually, I start back over with the first.  Rinse/Repeat.  Sometimes half a year or more will pass in between seasons, but I always come back to it.  This way I'm never really "done" with it.

Season four, btw, might be my favorite.  The finale, Whitecaps, is one of the greatest episodes of TV ever produced.

What are your favorite seasons?  I think two and five are up there for my top three.

Just finished up watching the six episode series, The Head. It?s about a crew of mostly scientists who are working a project in Antartica, and a small contingency of them stay on base for the six month winter with no sunlight. A murder happens during that time, and when the whole crew returns back after the 6 month break, they find that their base is now likely a crime scene, with some of the contingency crew are missing. I thought it was pretty good, as a kind of psychological murder mystery type show. Check it out.🙂
