at work so no streamage for me....2nd set looks interesting to say the least
how was it thru the sharts?
14 min Split?
Sounds interesting.
Been Caught Stealing.
Who sang been caught and what is that effect they used? The perry ferrel filter?
The effect is delay and I think Trey and Page both sang.

CTB was a welcome opener, its not summer tour unless you get a CTB while the sun is still out. Peaches was totally unexpected and a nice treat. I could be wrong, but I think Trey isn't playing the opening notes correctly, strumming chords instead of actually playing the crazy notes. But he hit the peak well (3.0! peakz). Halley's had a little jam then a solid segue into 46 Days, which rocked hard and really whipped the crowd up. I went to the bathroom during Divided Sky. Curtis Lowe was welcome, standard 'Lope to close it out.
Now set II was special. After Charlotte, I'm wondering what the hell Phish would do tonight to make the show worth a damn. Charlotte was such a rock show, so many bust outs, such high energy. The answer to my question once again reminded me of why I love Phish, because they do have such a range, and they do have the ability to make any given show special in a completely different way. This set was characterized by a really, really outstanding SOAM jam. Murky, dark, down in the fracking muck. The most thrilling part of the jam for me was this one moment when Mike slowly stopped playing, Fish started playing the "wrap up" drum beats, and you could tell the whole band was waiting for Trey to return to the SOAM theme or even start a new song. Instead Trey started riffing, and brought the jam in a new direction! I was captivated and thrilled. SOAM also brought some of the best CK5 work in recent memory. Eventually they did return back to the SOAM theme, and it was solid and celebratory and righteous. If you only listen to one song from the show, listen to the SOAM.
Twist was slow and good, Rift was messy. The jam out of Prince Caspian was actually pretty cool and worth checking out. Esther is neat and all but as a song it doesn't really grip me. Definitely fit the weird swampy dark feel of the set though. First Tube was super high energy, had the whole place jumping, as was GTBT.
Some dude next to me in the pav puked everywhere. Awesome.
All in all I feel super lucky to have caught both Charlotte and Raleigh. Since Charlotte was the tour closer type show, characterized by bust outs and large doses of Phish silliness, I am really curious to see what Portsmouth will bring. I'm thinking it will be more like a Charlottesville Fall 09 type of tour closer, and that is fine with me, since they will open SBIX with Harpua.
On a side note, best walk out house music I've ever heard came in the form of "Build Me Up Buttercup". Crowd is walking out and singing the song, with some singing the main lines, with others singing the responses ("why do you build me up" "build me up!" "buttercup baby just to let me down" "let me down!") with everyone joining in the big "i need you! i need you! more then anyone darlin..." etc. a special moment of communal doowop rapture.

Sweet, and thanks for the review man, sounds pretty well rounded. Pumped to hear the SOAM.

lol at gtbt to close leg 1
One more show...;)
ha. shows how much I've been paying attention.
I'm going to start listening to these shows now.
I'll pull out my highlights to save for multi listens.
this setlist looks like it could have some nice parts of the show.
stoked to listen to this on the drive to portsmouth. Definitely looks more interesting to me than Charlotte.

I disagree, I thought it was a pretty nice Split, love the different composure of the elements of the Split jam... Just gonna stick to my original assessment and say that I thought after that spooky dip where it seemed like they were just gonna segue into something else like they usually do, Mike started to kick out those ending base lines too soon. He could have gave Trey a little more time to properly build that ending to the normal raging peak of most Split's, which would have topped this jam off beautifully. But I still like the fact that they did bring it back into the ending they did, rather than their normal fade out segue...
"that they couldn't quite find their way back from the netherworld into the "Split's" final build. Getting a bit lost in this attempt, the guys finally bailed on the ending of the song, popping weakly into its final riffs. But anytime the band can't find their way back to earth because they've traveled so far into the cosmos, that's one kind blemish I can handle every single time." wow, that's funny. the split really isn't that great to me, cinny 09 is still a better version. mad props that they attempted to be creative.

IMHO if you really love phish. like really love them even when they suck that's all that matters. i've got folks who've seen phish since '92 who could care less about the scene or what they played last night. they still love the band. i feel like thats where some of the folks on this board are at.

oh yeah and i thought last night's show sounded pretty darn good...on another note i think the actual engineering of the sound for this tour has been outstanding. when played through my tube amp it's pretty much like being there if you close my eyes. perhaps it's the lack of drugs in my system though...
I thought the melt was fucking great.

no. i agree with that. i was just trying to convey that all that matters to ME is that you love the band to begin with. thats all. i guess i didn't do a great job of conveying that message.
gotcha. I was real happy with both shows I saw this tour fwiw

IMHO if you really love phish. like really love them even when they suck that's all that matters. i've got folks who've seen phish since '92 who could care less about the scene or what they played last night. they still love the band. i feel like thats where some of the folks on this board are at.
that's just the way i feel...
what you seem to fail to understand is that hating on a show or how the band is playing does not equate to hating the band.

man i love it when we all agree. for me that's why i joined the 'paug. don't get me wrong i like a good spirited debate. however i like it when we all can agree that we still like this band.

I thought the melt was fucking great.
I was even one of the few who dug the 3.0 style Melts, but it was fantastic to finally see them break away from that mold.
Fun show.
I felt the same way. It was good to see them try to take some chances.
Gotta say, I was OK to leave after they played Peaches. Hadn't seen one since NYE 96. That was cool.

If you didn't experience the :phish: scene before Jerry died, do not talk about the scene. You do not know what you are talking about.
It really is that simple.
proud member since early 1994. you've been reading too much Puterbaugh btw.

Love that they played it and pretty well I might add but I agree with this.
I enjoyed that Caspian. Some nice space towards the end.

Just before they started, they were joking about "ring my bell." I was started to get excited for that, but I'll take some Jane's Addiction. It was fun!

I liked the vocal effect. It was just goofy.
Probably freaked a bunch of people out, too.
I really enjoyed this Esther.
