Yes, after the Dylan & The Dead tour in '87 the idea was floated around.  I believe it's in one of the many Dylan books that came out in the past year or two.

The idea was floated around of Pete Sears joining the Dead too (after Brent died) but it was never gonna happen.

Dylan is crazy independent as a player and the GD aren't likely to follow anyone (but Jerry) around for long.
That said, I'd imagine that Jerry was all for it (he hated being the 'front guy') but Dylan was probably not seriously interested.

I bet it was more of a "this worked really well, maybe we should do it more" - surely Dylan couldn't ask for a better back-up band.

It was only a year after that Dylan got together with Hunter, Weir and Garcia to do Silvio...

I do know someone who worked closely with the Grateful Dead at the time, I can inquire more.

Dylan did write about finding his voice (almost literally) when rehearsing with them prior to the tour.
I happen to love the Dylan & The Dead album, too.

I think the album is good, I enjoy it, but I have to be in the right mood for it.  Some tracks are better than others. 
The combination seems to be a killer one, I mean, Dylan + the Dead, what more could you want, right?

At the same time, I would be interested to know what would have happened had they continued to play together for a few years, really combining all of their talent, coming up with some new songs, etc...

i wish the dylan and the dead album had some dead tunes with bob singing, not just bob tunes with the dead.  At times, in the right mood, i will put it on, but i never have seriously listend to each track closely.

i dont really like this combo, but i feel like i should.  i love the dead and dylan, but maybe it was just the point in their careers...  Dylan sounds really nasally and the dead just seem tired.  Some of the nights sound good, some dont.  But it would have been interesting if dylan had sang on a few dead tunes.

Seriously, WTF?  I am going to check this out when I get home.  I can't imagine Clapton said this, but who knows.  Is Clapton still doing drugs?   :-P
