I like the dig @ Family Guy right at the end.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/6872418/Simpsons-stories-the-tomacco-man.html

Simpsons stories: the tomacco man

Rob Baur is generally a straightforward, sensible man. A senior operations analyst at an Oregon sewage treatment utility company, he's responsible for research and development in the wastewater field, something he's been doing for 33 years. 'I've had one wife, one employer', he says, 'try to keep it simple.' He's a liberal sort of fellow who loves The Simpsons.

It's the latter point that has given Rob Baur 15 minutes of fame that have lasted seven years. In 2003, inspired by an episode of The Simpsons, he grafted together a tobacco root and a tomato stem to make 'tomacco'.

In 'E-I E-I D'oh' (episode 231, first aired November 1999) Homer invents giant tomacco plants that taste disgusting but are completely addictive ('That's horrible!' says Bart as he spits one onto the floor: 'I want another one!').

Baur's tomacco, on the other hand, has made him something of a Simpsons legend and given him a story to dine out on to this day (at wastewater conferences, he says, he often gets introduced as 'Mr Tomacco'). After the plant produced its first fruit, he sent a press release about what he'd done to a local television station, thinking they might find it reasonably funny.

Before long, people at The Simpsons heard about what Baur had done and invited him and his family to their offices. Baur had thought that one of the writing staff had probably read an article – as he had – in a mid-Seventies edition of Scientific American, in which a researcher grafted tobacco and tomato together. The idea was to show that you could grow tobacco leaves with no nicotine (which comes from the plant's roots).

The writer of the tomacco episode was Ian Maxtone-Graham, who'd come up with the storyline as a satire on big tobacco. Baur gave Maxtone-Graham a tomacco he managed to grow, and Maxtone-Graham ate it.

Part of Baur's intention in growing his tomacco was to poke fun at the tobacco industry. When he first read the article in Scientific American, he was moved: 'I thought, wow, you could grow tobacco with no nicotine and prove the lie that people smoke for the flavour. They're smoking for this insecticide, nicotine.'

His parents were both smokers: his mother died of lung cancer and his father had a lung removed when he got the disease as well. Watching the episode of The Simpsons reminded him of all of that – not the sort of epiphany you can imagine getting from an episode of, say, Family Guy.

JJ, I think we must have had a telephathic conversation recently.  I has this cross my mind as a great thread too!  +K

As for my contribution, I love the Max Power episode.

Homer: From now on, there are three ways to do things: the right way, the wrong way, and the Max Power way.
Bart: Isn't that just the wrong way?
Homer: Yeah, but faster!

That's awesome- I know Rob Baur, he's one of my clients!  I had no idea he grew  tomacco!  I've got to give him a call today!  That rules!

Homer:  Third best for me.

ya OR in general is great for food and beer and whatever.  my fam got the best English Muffins ever out of Medford.  Wolfermans i think it was called.

Wolfermans muffins are high carb heaven. We get them mail order in VT from my old man a couple times a year. And we gift them out to anyone we know who has a baby too far away to hand-deliver food. Just awesome stuff.

On topic...

Homer: Marge! I just realized--I'm the "Ow" in the word "now"... [raises fist menacingly] And if you tell anyone...

Marge: Homie, I like that you've started calling me from work, but we just had this conversation five minutes ago. Oh, there's a call on the other line. [Hits button] Hello?

Homer: Hey! It's me. I've got Marge on the other line and she is totally bumming me out.

The pics of the recipes on the back won't come out clear. But there's recipes for drinks called:

  • Spruce Moose
  • Ned Flanders
  • Pickled Egg
  • Jebediah Springfield
  • Shelybville Sour
  • Kwik-E-Martini
  • Dancin' Homer
  • Flying Hellfish
  • Underachiever
And of course...
  • Flaming Moe
Which I was surprised to see does not contain cough syrup.

You're telling me not a single one of those recipes calls for cough syrup? I'd add some in anyhow!

Finally got season 10 back from my GF. Gonna order 12 and 13 soon, but i swear if they come in the head box i will be very angry. I don't like the heads. They don't fit right within all the others.

Oh, and i love the episode where Marge starts hanging out with her friends again. I love when Homer sees Flanders and just praises him.

I bought season 13 a few nights ago and I finished it yesterday. It was decent, but it doesn't have shit on season 4, and I'm only through disc 1 (it arrived in the mail earlier today). Once I finish it, season 5 should have came in the mail by then. Once I knock that out, I'm going to start working on re-watching all of them and rank them. So far, season 4 is the tits, and I remember really enjoying season 8. 7 isn't too shabby either. Like I said, I'm gonna need to re-watch them to confirm, but I remember not really diggin' season 12 at all. I can't really remember what I thought of season 20, as i haven't watched it in a while.

Also, I read somewhere that the next release (14) is one of the worst seasons of all-time. I will still probably end up buying it once the price drops, just because I have OCD like everyone else here.

I heart The Simpsons. Ask zimbra. He and I have been getting Simpson'd the fuck out these last few weeks. I love Family Guy, and I love South Park, but I've seen every episode sooo many times. There are still plenty of Simpsons episodes I haven't seen yet.

JJ (and any other Simpsons freaks 'round here)- how would rank seasons that you've seen??

Oh yeah, I fucking hate the head boxes too.

Oh yeah, I fucking hate the head boxes too.
Seasons 4 and 5 had writers like Conan O'Brien.  They were head and shoulders above the rest.  Really they all have gems in every season but the difference between season 1 and 5 is huge.  Then it gradually tailed off.  Honestly, after about season 12 I stopped watching as I'd go several episodes without laughing out loud.  But those first ten years were pretty golden.

I was that guy who had 25 VHS tapes full of Simpsons episodes with all of the commercials edited out and a cheatsheet with what episodes were on which tape.

I had those also, but there was no organization to them, just episodes from different seasons all thrown together. When I had no cable I watched nothing but my Simpsons tapes for months. My vernacular was never the same again. I answered the phone with 'Ahoy, ahoy', I used the phrase "I'm not, not (doing what ever I was doing)", and regularly sung the Mr. Plow theme song for no reason.

QuoteAlexander Graham Bell's preferred salutation, ahoy-hoy was derived from the nautical term "Ahoy" which in its turn is derived from Dutch "hoi" meaning "hello". A recent resurgence in the popularity of the term has resulted from its use by The Simpsons character Montgomery Burns, who often answers the telephone with the greeting of "Ahoy-hoy." The use of the now-defunct ahoy-hoy, instead of the standard "hello", is a running joke referring to Mr. Burns living in the past.

It was the 7/3 camden show with the all fall down signal in glide.

Also not completely sure how much of a great moment that was.  It was cool to hear and have them do...but the only reason they did it was because of the "D'OH" sign all in big reds face that set.  I like it, but I would have loved it if they thought of it on their own.

I think the simpsons signals from BALL deserve to be recognized in this thread.

DOH!

So you didn't want to play on the wiffle ball team, but DID want to run the 5k! Sounds like you were trying to distance yourself from the paug.

Nice running joke.

Wiffle ball never happened for anyone here though. ANd if it did I never got a call.

Not Simpsons-related, but this reminds of a classic Mitch Hedgberg line: "I don't have a girlfriend. But I do know a woman who'd be mad at me for saying that."

So, I have to admit I haven't watched a new Simpsons episode in I don't know how long -- I remember thinking the show sucked 10, 12 years ago -- but this news really doesn't disturb me at all.

Am I missing out on something? Is The Simpsons miraculously good again?

I'll probably catch the Treehouse of Horror episode this year as I try to watch those at least.

Agreed.  After 2 or 3 seasons in a row where I would only laugh out loud maybe once every other episode, I gave up on The Simpsons.  Writers change, though.  I suppose it could have become funny again, but I have my doubts.

I did, however, enjoy the Simpsons movie. It had a few lousy jokes that would have been right at home in an episode from the past several years, but also plenty of genuine Simpsons-worthy humor. All the heavy hitters from the series' past worked on the script. I'd be happier if they'd cancel the series and just release a new movie every few years that they actually took the time to work hard on.

It's definitely not even close to being as funny as it once was. Seasons 4 and 5 were the funniest imo.

But I still love the show. I do still get a few laughs out of the new episodes, and I would never want the show to end.

Has anyone else played The Simpsons Tapped Out for iOS devices yet? It had some server issues upon start up and got temporarily pulled from the app store, but if you downloaded it before it got pulled you are still able to play it. I grabbed it and it's a pretty fun little game to flip on once or twice a day for a few minutes to grow your Springfield.

And here's the opening video to the game.

This is a little odd.
"Artist JK Keller took an episode of the Simpsons, ran the entire thing through some audio and video filters, and somehow it retains the full character of the show while also seeming like, as Keller puts it, "a frenetic mess of sight and sound"."

It's a messed up little art project.

http://kottke.org/13/09/the-simpsons-deconstructed

Best part?
He uses the episode, "Mom And Pop Art (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mom_and_Pop_Art)" for this. Surely this is deliberate.

FXX plans marathon telecast of 'The Simpsons'

NEW YORK (AP) — The FXX network plans a marathon telecast this summer of episodes of "The Simpsons" — all 552 of them consecutively.

The network said Wednesday the marathon will start Aug. 21 and continue into Labor Day. FXX programming chief Chuck Saftler said it coincides with the network's purchase of rerun rights and the development of an app that gives access to every episode of the long-running animated series.

Saftler said FXX will show four hours of episodes every Sunday this fall, up until the time a new episode is aired in prime time on Fox.

FXX is televised in some 72 million homes, and it hopes to hit the 80 million mark sometime later this year.

Makes sense, can't say I ever thought of the idea though.  I do remember that when it first came out the concept was that it was supposed to compete with full house and family matters (just on an animated scale), obviously that panned out differently.

Although I'm a little puzzled by the "most popular episodes" selections that you get on the home screen. They are all from recent seasons. What's up with that?

Good longish read on why the Simpsons is the greatest show of all time.

http://www.vulture.com/2016/09/tv-the-book-simpsons-best-television-show.html

QuoteWhy The Simpsons Is the Best TV Show Ever

If, by some chance, you stumbled across a person who had never seen a frame of The Simpsons, and they wanted to know why it was so popular, so respected, so beloved, how would you explain it?

You could start by showing them Sideshow Bob stepping on eight rakes in a row in under thirty seconds. The scene, from the classic season 5 episode "Cape Feare," represents the whole spectrum of humor folded and refolded into a single gag. Layer one is the lowest form of humor, violent slapstick. The sight of Bob stepping on rake after rake after rake is a monument to comic excess, pushing one joke past all reasonable limits—a gag on the same wavelength of Jonathan Winters in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World systematically destroying an entire gas station with his bare hands, or Laurel and Hardy in Big Business repeatedly trying and failing to get a piano up a flight of stairs. At the same time, though, it is also conceptual humor, because it is also about the idea of excess. As David Letterman demonstrated on his late-night shows when he repeated the same knowingly lame catchphrase for weeks on end, sometimes a gag is funny the first time, less funny the second, still less funny the third, then ceases to be funny at all, until the audacity of continuing to repeat it wears down your resistance and makes you laugh again. Finally, the rake gag is a bit of character-based humor with actual philosophical overtones: Sideshow Bob, who keeps trying and failing to murder his young nemesis, Bart Simpson, throughout the show's run, fears that the universe is indifferent to his desires, and may even derive joy from watching him suffer. What simpler way to confirm Bob's fears than by topping the lead-up to the gag—Bob being mangled and torn while hanging beneath the Simpsons' station wagon en route to witness protection at Cape Feare Lake—with a series of rakes to the face? That the onslaught of the rakes is so tedious, so basic, so not personal, only makes it worse. Everywhere Bob steps, a rake, a rake, another rake. The rakes stand in for every twist of fate that sabotages Bob's plan, every indignity heaped upon him, every eventuality his supposed genius could not foresee, every moment of potential glory snatched from his grasp. And of course the rake is also Bart Simpson: the Road Runner to Bob's Wile E. Coyote, Droopy Dog to Bob's Wolf. Bob's guttural shudders (a brilliant verbal flourish by guest star Kelsey Grammer) are not merely expressions of physical agony but marrow-deep self-disgust. Each time a rake hits Bob in the face, it confirms his secret fear that beneath his educated facade and delusions of omnipotence, he's still an unemployable TV clown, a second banana in his own life, a living embodiment of unmerited hubris and well-deserved failure—all of which, point of fact, he is. This lone gag crystallizes every facet of Bob in relation to the world of The Simpsons.

And he's not even a regular character!

That one could write a similarly expansive lead paragraph drawing on any one of dozens of other Simpsons gags—maybe hundreds; at the time of this book's publication, Matt Groening's animated sitcom was nearing the end of its third decade—gives some hint of the show's richness.

...

I haven't had FXX for a month or so now. Before, I watched The Simpsons literally every day (minus Wed and Sun). I switched from Dish to Directv and I have to upgrade my package. Sucks, but it's gotta happen. I'm not sure how much more it will be... I've been procrastinating.

I have every season, that are available, on DVD though...

it's in 3/28/17 Hour 3.  among other things, you get to hear various Simpsons characters having sex
