Question:
Should Phish be allowed in the bracket
Option 1: Yes
votes: 13
Option 2: No
votes: 6
So a few weeks ago, I heard some guys on ESPN talking about a "Rock & Roll of all time March Madness." I thought it might be kind of fun to do. Here is what I have thought of.
1) List 64 bands on a spreadsheet and submit them to me. I will compile the list of 64 and create a seeding based on the number of times a band is entered. For example, if everyone submits Phish, then they will get a 1 seed, etc.
2) Once I develop the seeds, I will create the full bracket and re-post.
3) Each round will consist of another vote similar to the seeding system and this will determine which band wins that round. You are welcome to maintain a copy of the bracket to see how you did.
4) Each round will coincide with the round of games going on in the NCAA tournament. This will give me some time to actually tally and post.
5) At the end of the tournament, we will crown the victor of the 2011 Band March Madness.
Submissions must be completed by the end of the day March 9, 2011. This will give me time to compile and reveal the bracket on Selection Sunday.
If you are interested, please PM me your email address and I will make sure I get you your entry sheet.
I am open to any suggestions and thoughts. More to come.

I leave that up to the group, but sounds like a reasonable thought.
if it wasn't so complicated it'd be cool to have a phish jam madness.
I can't count to 64 so my participation in anything is limited.
Can we vote if we don't submit a spreadsheet?
I refuse to open Excel for "fun". :-D

not trying to discourage anyone from setting anything up for discussion here, though i wouldsuggestthat the 2 - 10 spots might provide the more interesting discussion than the top spot since its pretty apparent who would win among this group.

I'm not necessarily thinking this will be true. I mean I think :phish: and :syf: are heavy favorites, but there could be some good cases for upsets. Zep, the Beatles, DMB () all could make runs at the championship.
Maybe the Elite 8 or Final 4 there is more of a discussion format than a simple vote.

I don't know too much about them. I did, however, think that their cover of Row Jimmy was pretty decent. Nothing epic, but I listened to it more than once.

Eb,
You will get way more than 64 bands from us. How will you decide which make it to the bracket of 64?
i dont mind the decemberists, and my wife quite likes them, but theyre certainly not in my top 16 bands ever.
but whats the contest, here? the one i mentioned earlier (surely someone else here remembers this, too?) was concert/live performance specific.
best show vs. best ever is obv a very different debate.

Yeah I guess it's relatively safe to say that 64 bands will get more than one vote. But if, say, only 50 bands get more than one vote, then the rest (which will have equal votes) will be selected how?

I'm not so sure. I am really hoping that we have enough entries to come up with at least 64 bands. They can be any genre, any time period. I think if you really dig deep and think of bands from years past, there should be no problem. If I hit that wall, then I will probably use a poll or discussion method.

I don't think it has to be concert/live performance specific.
Similar to how the bracket selection is somewhat subjective, especially for at large bids, which these all will be. I think the "body of work," "road wins," etc. all play a part. If you think Michael Jackson should get a shot, put him in. I mean he is the King of Pop and an amazing career of albums, conversely, Keller Williams is a touring one man "team" that has a consistent playing style, but occassionally can step up on the "big stage" and deliver.
Hope this makes it clear as mud.

I think there will be some more contention than you might think. But we'll see.
Yeah, I am thinking if everyone submits their lists to me, I will tally them up. I'll use the tallys to determine seeds and which region they go to. I was telling GAH at lunch that I am starting to think that using polls and discussions when we get to the sweet 16 and beyond will be interesting discussion, but for the original bracket just a list of 64 would be good.
I am personnally more interested in the match ups that don't have Phish in them. For example, what if something like Nirvana v Bob Dylan came up or Akron Family v WSP. Allmans v Willie Nelson. I think the matchups elsewhere will be fun.
Its really like the tourney...rarely does the heavily favored win it all.
It's a slippery slope IMO, ban Phish and then GD becomes the obvious winner, ban GD and then it goes to the Beatles or Radiohead and on and on.

We currently have 5 submitted lists and a few in process. It takes some time so get started. You have until next week, but remember I have to do the "bracketology" so be kind. :-D
Making the list was fun. I just went through my "recently played" and added a few others to which I hadn't listened in a while. Took like ten minutes (but then again I didn't rank my list in any way.)
No need to rank. I am just going to run a query fo Excel or Access to count the number of times a band shows up.
pivot table FTW
Pivot table are the death of me. please do not mention pivot tables on the 'paug again. :samurai:
But but but it's the one thing dumbass management has taught me!
Both of you need to get your data to me to start pivoting!
List sent.
That was fun to do. Ended up putting is some total randoms to keep it interesting.

I just did a very quick run and there are over 150 different bands submitted thus far. I still have "data cleansing" to do so, could be more, could be less.

Bands with the most votes should automatically. Any spots left over, lets say 60 get filled, the last four slots should be voted in via poll, a la the Halloween albums poll style.

I did mine quick too, but I'm sure with enough lists, the proper bands will all be included, and besides they'll be some arguments I'm sure as into why this band was included, while this other band was left off, etc....but thats the fun!
yea - thought more about it this morning and misse a couple.

Me too, it took me like ten minutes because I put together my list based on what was I had listened to most recently, filled in w/ other favorites that I thought shouldn't be left out. I'm sure I missed some stuff but nothing egregious.
11 entries to date.
Reminder that entries are due by the end of the day 3/9. Basically when I wake up on 3/10, I should have it.
Entry Deadline is today! get those picks in. You can just pm me the list. It really takes about 10 minutes.

GET MORE LISTS IN PEOPLE! COME ON!
Time to start bullying folks into participation
I don't know, between 11 people submitting lists of 64, even with some overlap, there's got to be at least 300 bands to make the 64 list up with....I bet we're fine. It's when we're voting and moving bands forward that I hope more people will participate in....
Ended up with 13 entries. I have done most of the work. There are a few ties I will need to break. For example, we have 5 tied for #1 and a few "play-ins" for the last few spots. To me there were some suprises. Some entries left off GD and Phish. Also you can really see how diverse as well as similar our musical breadth is. There is jazz, metal, rock, funk. Although there was a submission for Yanni, he did not make the tourney do to ZERO "quality wins."
If there is no objection, I have a randomizing process I will run within each group of tied bands to determine their seeding. Some bands will get screwed, basically just as random as the NCAA tournament.
I am working on finalizing the remaining logistics of how we will do this. Get excited for the brackets. I think they will be really fun.

Sunday it is!
Thanks for all the hard work Eb!

I think randomizing the process is the best idea, this way no one can say favorites were played.
I'm excited to see who made the final 64.

Pink Floyd

I'd like to publicly apologize to The Cure for forgetting to include them on my list, hopefully Robert Smith will write a mopey song about it.
What's worse, I actually forgot to include Stevie Wonder on my list! :-o
I lost sleep over it last night... :-(
I forgot Prince too! :shakehead:
I got one more for you that I missed...Michael Jackson! unbelievable :shakehead:
Uh, no.....I believe the correct word is unacceptable.
It doesn't really matter though since both of them made it in. But it's true, the bass line at the beginning of PYT is still one of my favorites...
Were you in the car when we were blaring that July 4 weekend last year in lope's car? I seem to remember that you were.
Ummm, that nonsense took place outside of my place! I'm pretty sure my entire neighborhood heard....
Yes, I remember now. stupid alcohol killing my brain cells.
Dam, this sounds fun. Wish i payed attention, either way i will vote and i hope Zappa made it.
#1 Seeds - Phish (overall #1), GD, The Beatles, Bob Marley
Jimi is #2 seed.
I had a long day today, so the bracket will be released tomorrow.

WHEN?!?!?!
BRACKET is up! I'll be working on the threads for each matchup later today. Feel free to keep track on your own.
I did my best to do an overall seeding and create the bracket according to that. #1 overall v #64, #2 overall v #63 etc. I used a lot of random number generating, asking my wife to pick odd/even, coin flips, etc. for some of the ties. Probably not perfect, but its pretty close to how the selection committee really works. :hereitisyousentimentalbastard

Dude, there are already some really tough choices on there for me... I may have to abstain on the following:
Willie vs. P-Funk
Dylan vs. Zappa
Beasties vs. Traffic
I just can't bring myself to pick!
Seriously?
The Band vs Miles Davis?
Also, I can kinda see Miles but... Coltrane? How does he belong in this?

We shouldn't have to tell people these things. They should already know that Black Sabbath comes before at least 1/3 of the "bands".

Yup. Just printed and filled my bracket for the first round. Super tough. Got some 2nd round matchups that have my head spinning, stevie wonder vs. led zep...how the hell do I choose?
I will proudly take blame for Coltrane (actually, the John Coltrane Quartet, which was a stable band).
Hardest one for me this round is Dylan vs Zappa, but gotta go with Dylan.
some great ones (Cream) will probably go down.
do we submit this by PM?

The final matchup looks pretty obvious, btw.
Then I printed the thing again on the other side of the paper so I could sketch my personal picks.

YEAH!
I will create a poll thread for each matchup. They will start getting posted this afternoon. There are 32 first round matchups after all. :) I may do 16 today and 16 tomorrow. We'll see.
I'm glad to see the "Seth Greenberg's" of the world out here pleading their cases. :)
And yes, I thought TAB was hysterical and a 1 v 16 matchup is even funnier.
I will get the overall entry list posted this week as well. For the record only 1 entry was for Black Sabbath.

Thank you sir, pretty surprised that Radiohead only rated a #9 seed.
how are coltrane and miles 'rock bands'?
1- because they rock
2-our favorite bands are heavily influenced by them
3-I may have missed it, but the title says Paug Band March Madness, without reference to genre
4-Duke Ellington "there's only 2 kinds of music - good music and bad music"

I was actually expecting much of this and I am thoroughly enjoying the discussions and links to music. I was really expecting this to be the kind of musical discussion that we hang out here for.

i'm not trying to start a fight, it just seems odd to have jazz musicians competing against a bunch of rock bands, especially when it's just those two.

Not that any of it matters.
It's still just gonna come down to Phish vs Grateful Dead.
I'm not so sure about that..........
Have you run the entire bracket?
Not just based on your preferences but based on the group at large?
No, I haven't. Perhaps it's just wishful thinking, but I could def. see some surprises in there.
I see your point, but personally, I'm going to have a hard time picking anyone over Marley. To me, there's just no other music that works no matter the situation.
Yup. I have Marley winning it all.
Is that based on YOUR picks or based on what you think the Paug will pick?
Either way, you're wrong.

I was telling GAH yesterday over a beer that the first round definitely a little less substance. I think rounds 2 and beyond are where things really get interesting and some real tough decisions/discussions will occur.

No real drama...yet. Just some friendly ball-busting and sarcasm. I wasn't referring to that, though. I was just referring to the many polarizing opinions we all have. I'm learning a lot about everyone's musical tastes (or lack thereof ).

Here is what I am thinking (generally) for the remainder of the schedules....
Sunday (3/20) - Sweet 16 begins
Friday (3/25) - Elite 8 begins
Wednesday (3/30) - Final Four Begins
Monday (4/4) - Final Matchup begins
I think I did all of the math to where there is 5 days of polls per discussion. Which would hopefully crown the victor on Saturday 4/9.
Any objections?
Sounds Gouda.
