Final 4 - 1-Phish v 1-The Beatles
This is a tough one. I've been thinking about it for a week already because I knew it was coming. I still don't know.
i voted for, "The Phish, from Vermont!"
I ask myself this question a lot.... super tough. Will report back later.....
Compared to Miles Davis, this was easy for me. Phish!

I don't like the Beatles that much anyway. I would say 20% of all the music my ears have heard has been Phish. Beatles don't even get .01%. Pretty easy decision.

RJ, I get why you're all Dylan on this one, but I can't agree with you... Sgt. Pepper is the reason you collect vinyl. Yes, there were albums before it, but it is the reason the Album (yes it is capitalized on purpose) is more than just a formatting option. It's the reason the Album can be considered a work of art that stands on its own.
Really, it comes down to Beethoven and the Beatles. Those are the cornerstones of Western Music. Everything else is just everything else.
Jazz?
Baroque? Romantic? Modern? Jazz? Blues? Folk? Rock? Who cares?
I'm talking about cornerstones... the music that stands alone atop all around it and will for hundreds of years.
Pre-electricity it's Beethoven. Post-electricity it's the Beatles.
You can argue all you want. This is how I see it. One can argue that there is better music from any era than these two. But they are the cornerstones. They stand alone.
The way I thought about it is that I would have voted Miles Davis over the Beatles. Phish eliminated Miles Davis and therefore Phish is better than the Beatles.
Simple logic, really.

Cant you say that :phish: is a cornerstone in live music...
The start of a multi-day festival of just one band
Covering whole albums straight through
CK5 and his ability with lighting.
Playing Chess with the audience
None of these change the course of culture or society but they are breakthroughs in live music...stuff other bands never thought of doing.

I think what becomes difficult for people is to understand the significance they had or how insane this music was at the time, because it requires you to eliminate everything you've ever listened to that came after it. To truly understand it in it's historical context you have to ignore everything else you've ever heard that was created since then, which in the case of most of us on this board, means everything you've ever listened to in your life.
I don't know if that makes sense, it's a little tough to put into words, but everything that came after has been influenced by them, so comparing them to any band you hear today, you have to realize, they wouldn't exist had it not been for the Beatles. And to the argument ph92 made elsewhere, which I'll be honest, bugged me for a few days, stating, so what if they were the first, couldn't someone else in the world have done that, and the answer is no. No, because if there was, they would have done it. And secondly, even if someone came up with the same melodies, the songs wouldn't have been the same. Or the words, and the attitudes wouldn't have been the same. Or any of the infinite decisions that created that group of 4 individuals or the circumstances that brought them together to make this happen. Quite simply no, it wouldn't have been the same.
And in another sense, try and sit down a write a song, lyrics, melody, etc. And then try and have any one other than your friends and family dig it. And then have everyone in the world dig it. Do that once, and you'll be a star. Now imagine doing that 50 times over....Just look at that list Igbo threw out there. Each of those songs in itself is a masterpiece. The more I think about what PG said, even if he doesn't vote that way this time around, they are the cornerstones of music. Everything else, is, well, just everything else.
Beatles. Sorry, Kids. As Igbo so eloquently stated, 'It's the fucking Beatles'...

right - RJ seems to think he refuted that point because there are better albums before Pepper... but I already made the point there there are, perhaps, better examples of music before and after Beethoven and before and after the Beatles, but they are the cornerstones. Sgt. Pepper stands alone as a cornerstone that made the Album a singular work of art for generations. It's not even the Beatles' best album. I'd argue that Revolver came before it and is almost as cohesive... but again, it's the cornerstone. It's the one that made the difference.
fuck it... I voted.

Quotehttp://Is it fair to say that within about a six-month period, musicians in San Francisco went from playing folk and jug music to full-blown psychedelic music?
Pretty much, yeah.
What caused that to happen?
Well, number one, the Beatles, followed shortly by the Rolling Stones. Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions started on New Year's Eve [of 1963]. And I guess it was January or February of '64 that the Beatles hit. I won't say this was the death knell for the folk craze, but it certainly co-opted the folk craze. It was not too long before everybody pretty much had converted to electric guitar. Let's see. The Beatles hit in February, and our jug band, Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions, was beginning to electrify by November or December of '64.

John Lennon would vote for Phish.
He would have voted for Chuck Berry, who wasn't even included for some reason.

No Beatles.

it would have been interesting to see the views if it was gd vs. the beatles. we know the big dead heads here but we also know there are way too many confused phish fans here too

 If Phish beat out Miles i sure as hell hope they would beat out the Beatles. I personally just don't like them. Sure they may have started the whole psychedelic thing, i guess, But i think the Mothers were way more psychedelic at the time, and if your going on Influence then fucking Sabbath should win :-D, IMO way more influential then the Beatles.

Sgt. Pepper was most definitely instrumental in forwarding the idea that an album can be more than a collection of songs.
right - RJ seems to think he refuted that point because there are better albums before Pepper... but I already made the point there there are, perhaps, better examples of music before and after Beethoven and before and after the Beatles, but they are the cornerstones. Sgt. Pepper stands alone as a cornerstone that made the Album a singular work of art for generations. It's not even the Beatles' best album. I'd argue that Revolver came before it and is almost as cohesive... but again, it's the cornerstone. It's the one that made the difference.
Cornerstone of your building but not everyones.
I haven't voted.
Mostly cos I'm annoyed at the discussion.
The thing with the Beatles, is that everything was an event. Every single release was huge. Did you hear the new Beatles song? And then, the B sides were better than everyone else's A sides
There would be debates over which was better, the A or B side - starting with A Hard Day's Night/I should have known better.
We Can Work it Out / Day Tripper
Paperback Writer / Rain
Hey Jude / Revolution
the list goes on
Every album was huge
When Sgt Pepper came out, the world stopped. Everywhere, everyday, people were talking about it.
Never saw that before, never saw it again -
that is, until the White album came out. Not quite the same fervor as Sgt Pepper, but almost.
John was right. They were bigger than Jesus. That's the real reason all the bible thumpers got pissed - they were bigger

God yes. I'd say though the first 6. Sabotage has some really incredible moments. I love Hole in the Sky and Symptom of the Universe. But technical Ecstasy and Never say die, just kinda sucked.

Funny, the louder the Beatles' folks get, the higher the Phish count rises. Late 4th quarter surge. You're going down mop tops, going down hard Butler style.

It's on the cusp of an insurmountable margin...
Of course, some clearly haven't voted.
I finally got a chance to vote and I enjoyed the 7 pages i have read, however there is one distinct point that I think is poorly represented. ALL of us here have given more time and money to Phish v the Beatles. Part of it is the era for which we exist and the other part is because Phish is indeed a special, special band. It is comparing apples to oranges in many ways, but although I would like to vote for :phish: I do have to say...
