Wow.  This is the only category that has stunned me.  I understand there are a lot of older dudes that like the oldschool jammy stuff here...but wow.

Losing My Religion vs. Woodstock Soul Sacrifice?

Well I guess I'll go REM just to be contrary.

I went with R.E.M. because their influence is so broad.

Not that Carlos wasn't influential and awesome...

First thought best thought = R.E.M.

Exactly my thought process.  Without REM, no college rock, no Grunge, no Radiohead, no Pavement, etc.

You make it sound like REM = Velvet Underground. They do not. REM was a good band who did some interesting things, especially in the beginning. But they did not spawn "college rock." They most certainly had very little to do with spawning "grunge." And Radiohead and Pavement call to let you know how wrong you are. Radiohead gets its name from a Talking Heads song, not an REM song.
I've been coming to where I am from the get go
Find that I can groove with the beat when I let go
So put your worries on hold
Get up and groove with the rhythm in your soul

Pavement would most definitely agree.  See countless interviews where Malkmus explains his love of REM as well as the song "Unseen Power of the Picket Fence" which makes fun of his REM obsession.

Also, they got Mitch Easter to produce "Brighten The Corners" because of his connection to REM's early recordings.

REM, along with Husker Du and The Replacements, are as influential as it gets when it comes to alternative rock.

Kurt Cobain was fairly outspoken of his love of REM and their influence on him.

But, I don't think our fans do happily lap it up, I think they go online and talk about how it was a bad show.

i will fund your mission.

i've always hated REM. that's nice if they influenced some other bands i don't like, but comparing them to Santana? that's insane.

sls.stormyrider

I like REM - some of their stuff I like a lot.
but Santana is, well, Santana

the mix of Latin, rock, jazz, and blues is outrageous
"toss away stuff you don't need in the end
but keep what's important, and know who's your friend"
"It's a 106 miles to Chicago. We got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses."

i'm not even dissing REM - i def have some respect for their early stuff, i loved it a lot as a teenager before losing my religion and everybody hurts

that said, im not taking them over santana.  rem influenced nirvana, great.  santana influenced trey.  between phish and side projects i've seen trey play guitar more than 150 times, so....

but to get to the point...   grunge sucks/ed.

But without Grunge nobody would wear flannel except for Lumberjacks and Al Borland.

Funny thing is I almost included them in my post. And a funny thing I've noticed at my new job is that up on your side of town a lot of lesbians are rocking the greasy slicked back mullet look.

There's nothing feminine about these broads.

That is ludicrous... Stop making me laugh so hard.

I cant really stand REM either.

Santana is the mother fucking BOSS! Not to mention I respect him for not having any qualms with working with pop singers etc. I always thought it was kinda interesting.
