Dark Magus is where it's at.
Troof, although I'm more of a Jack Johnson and On The Corner guy myself.

the six disc On The Corner complete sessions are insane.
Yeah man, I have the Jack Johnson, Silent Way, Bitches Brew and complete Plugged Nickel too, all are badass, but On The Corner is tops.

I was under the impression that Miles would not allow himself, nor his musicians, to bring "practiced" music to live performances.

But seriously, his bands would never have played any songs if they were never along to play any music that wasn't already written.

That doesn't make much sense to me.

sls.stormyrider

of course they played from the framework of written songs / compositions.

Miles supposedly didn't allow "riffs" - he wanted every solo to be brand new.

He would walk up to band members during a song, play a few notes back and forth, and if he liked what he heard he would tap the guy on the shoulder and let him play. If he didn't like it, he would walk away and go to someone else. Pretty cool to watch.
Like I said before, no one I've seen commanded the stage like Miles
"toss away stuff you don't need in the end
but keep what's important, and know who's your friend"
"It's a 106 miles to Chicago. We got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses."

I should have made this clarification, but I was wasted when I wrote that last night.  This is what I meant.

I was kinda hoping that was what you were referring to.  The way it was written, looked different.

And I'd like to see Phish improvise again.  I'm putting my money on miles.

Phish jammed way harder than Miles did.

94/95 Tweezers/Bowies etc. made In a Silent Way/Bitches Brew/Live Evil look like child's play.

:shakehead:

Child's play? What the hell are they teaching you up at Berklee?
Just two whiskies, officer.

I'm not sure if I followed this thread correctly, but what guys are saying is that Dave Thomas sold crack in inner-city DC in the mid-80's, right?

 I'm obviously playing a little Devil's Advocate here, but I am serious to an extent.

There is more full-band, exploratory, "the music can go anywhere, at any second" type of improvisation happening in the best of Phish jams

Of course, we all agree with that - that's why we love to listen to phish!

There's just a big part of me that believes that improvisation as an art form would be totally different without Miles.

I also think he's a better musician than any of the guys in Phish, and more of a pioneer in the world of music in general.

I definitely listen to more phish than miles, but I have a greater respect for Davis' music and its importance. It just doesn't get much heavier than Miles!
