audio sample is interesting! Two vocalists for sure - but Celisse also plays guitar and it sounds like two guitars below!!! Could be really fucking cool!

I'm psyched to hear what this band does! That snippet is pretty interesting.
Hell yeah. I dug what I heard in that clip.
Three vocalists, right?
Trey, Celisse, and Hartswick.
I'm gonna try for that DC show!

Woah. This is interesting. Fish is a GIGANTIC x-factor in the mix here.
It's not just TAB w/ Fishman as a replacement drummer. It becomes an entirely different band w/ his precense, IMO. Obviously, they thought the same....
Definitely excited to hear this.... I've always liked Ray's playing and it should be interesting how Fishman approaches the material with such a polar opposite bass player than Gordo.
Will mehead fly in for the Portland show?
edit- pretty pumped for this new band!
Man in trying to save money to move. I'll have to assess what show I might hit. This sounds interesting, I'm excited for some new sounds.

Celisse Henderson is a mofo. Just watching some videos of her. Damn.
What Phish show/s did she perform on?
They're playing the wrong Portland :|
Pretty interesting, been a long time since Trey played with another guitarist outside of FTW and other one-off stuff.

We can solve this. Which one(s) you looking for? I can certainly try to grab more during the regular onsale if you need help. Between me and my BIL Kevin, we grabbed 3 pairs for Boston and may have an extra or two if we strike out...
Note to future self: you told your wife about getting tix for these shows tonight, so she can't say you never told her. 8-)
two more dates added - a night at each Greek - (LA and Berkeley). Gives me hope that maybe a Jazzfest date will be added.

a. It's not a tour if they don't, you know, "tour" from venue to venue. Have you ever heard anyone call NYE a tour? Didn't think so.
b. Technically March 6-8 is still winter
c. Now go get your fucking shine box. :samurai:
Yes, technically, I believe "tour" would indicate a movement from one venue to another, even if it's just one move and two venues, that'd be valid. (see: island tour). NYE are not a tour. Mexico is not a tour. Hampton come back shows are not a tour. Bakers Dozen...not a tour. Those I'd just call "runs". Like the New Years run, or the Bakers Dozen run...etc.

You should probably take a few days downtime in the Bay Area to unwind.

Locked and loaded for the Greek Berkeley on 4/20. Stoked!
oh yeah? **checks kayak**
$200 roundtrip and free place to stay so I pulled the trigger. It's not even sold out either. Guessing tix will be peanuts as it gets closer.
nice, yeah 135 round trip from Denver. Checking on lodging now.
My wife would divorce me if I pulled the trigger on this trip - seriously. I leave the following Wednesday for 2 weeks of Jazzfest without her.
you can hang out with me and Todd more then!
but for real, its a last min work conference they need your expertise for Dave!
This guy makes a lot of sense :D
The work conference seems like a legit excuse to me. I'd buy it. Plus, she's forgiving. You should go.

Yeah or there's probably some weed/beer festival you should do some research/recon at that weekend.
ah damn my rogue river/grants pass crew is going...so see ya there Todd! and Dave ;) !
The Paug pressure is strong.
Welp, I just found out that the next day is Easter so I'm getting some heat from the boss myself. Gonna see how this plays out.

There are usually a couple of honorary Jews (well, one and a half actually). It's mostly family (grandparents, great grandparent etc.) but it might be smart to have more Jews. In this day and age of #metoo and all that crap, you can get skewered if your event isn't diverse lol.

QuoteLately, you've been doing solo acoustic tours, Phish, TAB and now Ghosts of the Forest. What drives you?
I think the risk makes me feel alive. Change is the one thing you can count on. Everything is turning and changing all the time. There's a lot of music tours on the road now that are from, like, Seventies nostalgia? A lot. And that's great. And yet, it's over. I mean, I want to hear King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, which is all I listen to now. I'm just obsessed with these guys. I mean, they put out five albums last year and they're cool. I'd rather hear something new. I feel blessed that the fact that so much of what Phish does is improvised means that's built into our whole thing. Ever night is going to become new.

It was pretty surreal seeing Trey play so many previously unheard songs last night. I know that doesn't help much.

100% agree. I'm going again next Wednesday and I'm not relistening before then. Not quite virgin ears but like , just the tip ears.

I've been listening a fair bit. Heard the stream last night and wasn't feeling it too much. Watched a vid this morning (that scotty posted) and liked it a little more. They put last night's show on LP and I listened to the first 5 songs before switching over the tube cardioids off of etree. It sounds so good. Personally, I am glad I am getting familiar with these songs. I like being familiar with material. Plus I'll know when to go to the bathroom lol. But ser, upon relisten it keeps growing on me more and more. That said, going in with fresh ears is a great thing too. But I'm way past that. It's only going to get better too. The difference between the first ever TAB show in '99 and the last one of the tour is gargantuan.
So yeah, last nights set list was the exact same, so I guess, that's how he's doing it. Same show every night.

I sat (next to rj) for the whole set and was absolutely rapt the entire time.
Having lost my mom to cancer not 3 months ago, this material is both timely and therapeutic; and also a real kick in the dick.
That show was amazing. There are song to which one can dance— I got up and did so for a bit— but sitting and listening was very rewarding. Lots of ripping guitar action. So glad I went to that.

Yeah, vibes to you guys who have lost someone close to you.
Vibes to those that have lost someone close and are finding this tour and album cathartic.
My thoughts on Saturday night were:
50% Phish + 66% TAB = 150% Fun
I enjoyed it thoroughly, and can't wait to give the show and this album another listen. Also, first time at the Anthem in DC and it is a beautiful venue, and I'm looking forward to seeing more shows there in the future, preferably not during the Cherry Blossom Festival when the area was INSANELY crowded.
Must say the Portland show has been in high rotation. Impressive debut. Makes me think about other "debut" shows in Trey's storied career.
Knowing the back story, GOTF is a capsulation of Trey and his best friend Chris. The arc consists of existential musings, memories and meditations if you will, as if walking through a forest or hiking trail. From beautiful vistas to dark caves and aquatic areas in between, a full range of emotions and ecosystems, Chris and Trey immersed.
Some of my favorites so far:
Intro>
Ghosts of the Forest
Drift While You're Sleeping
Sightless Escape
There's a Path Above
Beneath a Sea of Stars Parts 1 + 2 + 3
Ruby Waves
Wider
Musically the band is tight, well rehearsed. Ray in particular plays very strong as does Fish. Really no weaknesses. Pretty much every song has something to offer. Halfway Home features some of Trey's best use of vibrato in a very long time. Visually impressive(I've only seen pics) w/ Jennifer and Celisse up front.
Trey's best solo project yet.
So the two New York shows will be used to make a live record/dvd!

I expected this response... you know... because you have no soul.
I love you anyway, you soulless bastard.
I was about 10 rows in front of SF, left after the encore and thought the show was awesome. I liked it better than Portland, but that might just have to do with being closer and having better sound. I also was not nearly as high as Portland.
Aside from the new songs/new sound, two new things I really like are LED Trey lights and Trey's aggressive downward power slide.
Really digging the album!
Does phish even have a 23 min track on their studio album?
Edit: other than "union federal"
I find it odd that the piano intro to the live shows is an excerpt from a song called 'Magnets and Revolutions' that doesn't exist in full yet. I'm wondering if there will be another studio album in addition to the announced live album.

QuoteTrey produced the album and tapped Vance Powell to mix and engineer the LP. At one point, Powell went outside of The Barn with a recording rig and taped 45 minutes of ambient sound from the Vermont hillside. Vance and Trey layered elements of those sounds within Ghosts Of The Forest.

I dig it too. I think Long Lines is the sappiest Trey song that I absolutely love. It brings tears to my eyes and joy to my heart. Such a wonderful composition! Especially after reading what Trey said about the last days of his friend Chris's life and how some of the moments he mentioned are lines in the song. This is a man who misses his best friend.

Also...I hate to be a stickler here.... but isn't "Stumble Into Light" just maayyybbee a liiittllleee too close to "Pigtail" .... just maybe? hmmmm.... the "micro-jam" was pretty slick though....
But really... overall... Some good stuff... some.... 'same-ol-same-ol' stuff...... Lots to digest. As a songwriter myself, it's just mindblowing to me the amount of material Trey puts out. The guy is a creative machine.

I believe they are saying "stumble into Flight", but I see what you mean.
I'd like to see Phish tackle The Green Truth, About To Run and/or Halfway Home. Imagine the amazing 25 or 6 to 4 jam that could come out of a mid-second set Halfway Home!
yes indeed. stumble into flight is very pigtailish, but that's ok because it's bouncy and happy and doesn't have the word pigtail in it. ruby waves would transfer over to the ph catalog nicely too.

This is true. I wouldn't be upset if it replaced Pigtail's rare appearance. The jam was pretty sick.
I sunk deep into the first three shows of this tour. I didn't think there was much more to hear after that. Same show. Same setlist. Didn't think there was any meaningful difference between the shows. Really like the material, but It seemed to be the same from show to show.
Thank God my OCD kicked in.

Saw the Berkeley show.
On the whole, liked it a lot.
Many excellent musical passages in there, along with some pretty insufferable Trey lyrics. I appreciate the sentiment, but sometimes it sounds like he's writing these things by assembling life affirmations he found on greeting cards. Though the fact that he's so sincere and adorable helps to make up for that.
So anyway, as for the show overall, I was into it.
And those times when the music and lyrics were overly Trey cheesy, I could always focus in on Fishman, who killed it from start to finish.

It's hard to complain. In the last few years trey has given us everything we could want from his songwriting both alone and with his various partners. I mean, in the last five years we've been blessed with two Halloween's worth of non-sensical, funny, quirky, phish on par (at least lyrically) with Junta-era classics like David Bowie, YEM, or Dinner and a Movie. We've got thinkers and epic works like Mercury and Petrichor. We've got some cheesy schmaltz like GotF... but it's really hard to complain.
The man is on fire lately. Taken with that wide angle view GotF is an incredible accomplishment in the midst of everything else that seems to hold treys attention these days.

I feel like cactusfan kind of nails it. yeah, it is so cheesy, but the musicality and amazing supporting cast including the one and only Fish - plus Trey just ripping it up on some parts - made for a very unique and special show. it's definitely a one-and-done band, IMO... but we'll see some of those songs soon, no doubt.
I have always enjoyed Ray's playing - he is kinda the Melvin Seals to Trey's Jerry, if that makes sense - and I think this context has had some of his best playing with Trey.
I agree with cactus and Pie, there are times when Trey writes the music to fit the lyrics which I really don't care for - the instrumentals are the best parts of GOTF for me - and there are times when it seems the lyrics are placed over the music as an afterthought. I like those latter instances, and I hope those always continue.

thank you :)
That Greek show was so good. I was regretting getting ticket and flight after I heard the first show of the tour, but now I'm so happy I went.
My boys just pulled out a book to read...
So I just got an email from Trey (or rather his website) that they are going to do a free GotF Webcast (on 4/20, no less) and that Trey wanted to share the previously unreleased studio version of Stumble Into Flight.

QuoteHi everyone!
I can't believe it's been a year since the Ghosts of the Forest tour. What an amazing experience that was. I miss playing music with my buddies Celisse, Jen, Ray, Fish and Tony. Thank you so much to everyone who came out and took that huge leap of faith to see an entire night of brand-new music. This never could have happened without all of you, the most remarkable, open minded group of people ever to attend a concert in the history of music. I just can't even believe it when I think back on it.
While I was reminiscing about the tour, I was thinking about the song "Stumble into Flight" that was recorded during the Ghosts of the Forest sessions. The lyrics feel eerily relevant right now and I wanted to share the studio version. "Pebbles in the pitcher make the water rise" refers to the Aesop's fable "The Crow and the Pitcher". A thirsty crow finds a pitcher with water at the bottom, beyond the reach of its beak. He can't push it over, so he drops in pebbles one by one until the water rises to the top of the pitcher, allowing him to drink. Necessity is the mother of Invention. Thoughtfulness is better than brute force. Where there's a will there's a way.
Maybe I'm overly optimistic, naive, or ignorant about history, but I believe that we're going to find solutions to our seemingly insurmountable problems, and that some kind of positive shift in social consciousness is waiting for us on the other side of all of this. It feels like we're on the precipice of a forward-thinking social upheaval. A course correction based on kindness, community, ingenuity, unity.
I believe this.
Thank you all again for your faith and support on that Ghosts tour. In celebration of that special tour, we will be doing a free webcast of Ghosts of the Forest's April 13, 2019 show from the United Palace Theatre in New York City. The full show will stream this Monday night 4/20/20 starting at 8 PM ET at http://webcast.livephish.com or on my facebook.
Much love to all of you, and much love to any of your family or friends who are struggling with loss, sickness and economic insecurity during this difficult time.
Trey
