Title: Contract for Phish 10-25-90 + Promotional Display Poster and Rider.
Post by: lifeboy13 on May 03, 2009, 11:42:33 PM
I recently was browsing Ebay for my ticket stub collection (My new favorite Hobby), when I came across a very strange and unique auction.  It said "Phish Show Poster & Performance contracts with Rider".  I looked and looked again, was at $20 with no bids and I wasn't sure if it was real.  There wasn't a show listed in the Pharmers Almanac for 10-25-90.  It did look like it was likely a show though with Phish touring out east in September of 90' and starting to head south after the first week of October.  The last recorded show before this was October 13th in South Carolina, and then they spring up in Colorado just 5 days after this.  After a short debate with myself I decided I had to have it, My first show was 10-25-95 and the coincidence was too good to be true.  The bid went to $29 with about 45 minutes to go, I was hoping the guy wouldn't fight me too much for it and in the end I was able to over bid him by a couple of bucks.

I just received this yesterday and I must say I really was pleasantly surprised to find both John Paluska's & Paul Languedoc's phone numbers on these!!  Condition of the poster is as described but the documents look real and are in NICE shape!  The guy I bought it from appears to be the booking agent maybe due to the papers are white and it says the white copy is for the agent. I wonder how long it will be before I try one of those numbers lol.

Please let me know what ya think of this and if ya think I got a good or bad deal paying $35 for this with S/H.  Peace and Love, thanks.

Those are sweet posters, I have a couple of them.  That one is the sweet horizontal one, they came in black and white and black and yellow.  They are hard to find without a show scrolled on the bottom, but that makes 'em kind of unique too.  In the old days, I used to always try and get them off the walls as soon as the show ended, but they always were gunked up with tape  or something...I have 2 of those bigger ones, and two of the vertical skinnier ones that are the same picture but came out in Spring '91.....The one you got is the best one....the rider is kind of cool too....I would think the poster is worth $35, it is to me....they are hard to find in good condition.  Nice find...

Thanks man, That's great to know.  Not that I'm looking to price this or anything, It's probably gonna get buried with me lol.  The facts that you added will help me in describing this to friends over the future years to come as it hangs framed in my house.

Yep--that fascinates me. I think 35 bucks was a deal. Great collectible item; personally I'd do like you said, frame & art-hang.

I tried to put it on here but having trouble figuring out how to make it a small enough size to fit as an attachment.  I get it eventually otherwise if your gonna be at the Alpine shows, you can take a closer look at it.  Was hoping to make it to DC and PA but will see.

This stuff is great!

Kinda makes PHiSH seem like a bunch of stuck-up assholes though  :-P

I didn't know they were big enough in 1990 to make such specific demands!

Back in those days, we always tried to be there 7 hours before so we could be one of the 4 loaders...I'd say I got into about half of my first 25 shows for free that way, carrying the lights in and hauling stuff out after the show (which depending on your state was sometimes a little tricky.)  I do know that after 4/21/91, the Hammond was falling off the truck ramp and I blocked it with my face.  Everyone said I saved the day, but I got a baseball on the side of my dome the next day....For reference, here is a cruddy copy of one of the vertical posters from '91.....They stopped using the big ones (like yours) in '90....Like I said, I usually rescued these off of phone poles or bulletin boards, so all of mine are mangled....The latter day ones (like this one) have the venue printed, the one's like yours were always hand written....

Classic story!! I love hearing about the old days.  I was a Late bloomer not seeing them until 95' when I was 22.  thanks again for the feedback too.  It helps so much to know a little about this.  I hope to someday find someone who actually went to this show.

That's pretty cool, thanks for taking the time to get that all up.  It's all pretty standard stuff, most of the time a band puts in the things that they really want, but if your even a half-way decent promoter (which I like to think I was) you can negotiate with management and get them to meet you half-way on stuff.  As far as the boys went, on the tech portions, I would guess that they were pretty firm on what it was they were going to get.  As far as the food and drinks go, I've seen worse, but like I said, that was pretty standard.

Thanks for posting it, lifeboy! +k

thchad covered what was to be my comment but I feel like writing it anyway.

These riders can seem really demanding but, compared to many that I've seen this one isn't so bad. especially when you consider the fact that the entire sound & light section of the contract was optional and may be provided by the band. Additionally, they are usually written from a don't ask, don't get perspective. Different things are dropped or substituted for various reasons sometimes with approval/agreement of management, sometimes not.

I imagine plenty of them have modifications initialed by the signatories, too--just like your average lease.

have you guys seen phish's & oysterhead's riders on http://www.thesmokinggun.com/backstagetour/phish/phish1.html they actually seem less demanding than most bands...

http://www.thesmokinggun.com/backstagetour/oysterhead/oysterhead1.html

i know of 2 other shows, both in nc...that aren't listed in the almanac or phish companion,i assume because no tapers were present...in the early 90's phish would play a college or frat house between tours...the owner of a bar in my college town had the check framed that he paid phish...$750 to get them to play his bar the attic in greenville,nc...they also played a show in sunset beach,nc that no tapes exist for...trey threw joints out to the crowd during stash...

i was kinda surprised w/ the detail of the rider for 1990...then again that's probably one of the reasons why phish has been so professional & succesful...
