I really like all the photos and video that come out of NASA. Figured a thread might catch some stuff I miss. This is a new video they recently upped and it is all MINDBLOWIN' and shit. Time lapse from the space station.

Fucking insane.

I love the shots of the city lights on earth from space. The one of the east coast is cool. You can make out Richmond, Norfolk/VA beach, Hampton, Fredericksburg and even Charlottesville. Very cool.

I once saw this interview of the guy that NASA employed to color all of the shots from the telescopes that everyone sees.  Like from Hubble.  The actual images have no color and he choses colors to coordinate with the gases.  It was pretty interesting

What's crazier than tripped out space shit? Alien dinosaurs. That's what.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/04/12/alien_dinosaurs/

Quote
Death Star dinosaur aliens could rule galaxy
Boffin: 'We would be better off not meeting them'

Rather than dying out in the dimly lit aftermath of a ginormous asteroid impact, dinosaurs on Earth may have instead spread to other planets and built a terrifying space-conquering empire.

Organic chemistry expert Prof Ronald Breslow has suggested from new research into DNA that the Jurassic Park monsters may in fact be living in highly evolved civilisations on other worlds - quite possibly with their own interstellar exploration programmes.

"We would be better off not meeting them," the Columbia University boffin warned, however.

The alien dino theory in Breslow's paper published today in The Journal of the American Chemical Society is just one speculative conclusion of his research into DNA shapes. In his research the award-winning academic probed a mystery that's bothered boffins since the last century: why amino acids and sugars on Earth are always structured in a particular way.

He analysed the structure of proteins, sugars and genetic materials in DNA and RNA to find out why our planet's building blocks of life mainly exist in a specific orientation. The scientist pondered:

There are two possible orientations, left and right, which mirror each other in the same way as hands. This is known as "chirality". In order for life to arise, proteins, for instance, must contain only one chiral form of amino acids, left or right. With the exception of a few bacteria, amino acids in all life on Earth have the left-handed orientation. Most sugars have a right-handed orientation. How did that so-called homochirality, the predominance of one chiral form, happen?

Breslow laid out evidence that unusual amino acids were brought to Earth by a meteorite four billion years ago and kickstarted life on our planet. He examined whether these putative space rock amino acids set the pattern for the L-shaped amino acids that make up most life on Earth and investigated whether those could lead to D-sugars of the kind present in DNA.

He cites evidence that L-shaped amino acids were found on a meteorite that landed in the 1960s. Life built out of the same basic building blocks could, on other worlds, take similar forms to creatures that roamed pre-historic Earth, as Breslow noted:

Such life forms could well be advanced versions of dinosaurs, if mammals did not have the good fortune to have the dinosaurs wiped out by an asteroidal collision, as on Earth. We would be better off not meeting them.

On the question of just why other planets may be inhabited by our dinosaurs, a second paper published last week in the Cornell Earth and Planetary Astrophysics Journal suggests the trillion-ton meteorite impact that killed the dinosaurs 65 million years ago may have blasted off small bits of dinosaur DNA out into space. And quite a lot of those bits of dino-carrying rock will have landed on amenable planets, say the paper's authors.

The Cornell boffins have worked out what quantities of Earth matter would have been kicked out by the force of the impact and where that matter landed. They estimate that bits of Earth matter will have headed into the red dwarf Gliese 581 system some 20 light years away, which is thought to have a super-Earth orbiting at the edge of its habitable zone.

And of course if life from Earth was spewed into space by meteorites, then of course the life which arrived on our homeworld via meteorites must have come from somewhere else - somewhere perhaps filled with super-dinosaurs with iPads, satellite telly and Star Wars-style Death Stars.

Funny story concerning that pic of Dubai. Besides the man made palms out in the water, you see a cluster of tiny sand islands in the shape of a globe. It is supposed to be earth, you can clearly make out South America, NA and Africa, Eurasia. Australia is a little fucked. Anyway, regarding those islands, they are emblematic of the massive Dubai housing bubble that crashed during the crisis, and to this day remain unbuilt on.

Yep, and they don't have nearly the same oil money as big brother Abu Dhabi. I think I heard some of the islands are actually sinking. I remember a special on History channel or something about the massive amount of money spent just on planning this ridiculous thing. There were huge problems developing the breakwater to make sure they were safe from the open waters. It's a reminder both of the amazing things man can achieve as well as the dangers of what happens when people constantly blow smoke up your ass.

Good chance of a CME (Coronal Mass Ejection (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coronal_mass_ejection)) heading our way in the next 24 hours. So if you lose power, or your cell phone stops working, this will be why:

Speaking of historic, today in 1961 President Kennedy declared his intention of putting a U.S. astronaut on the Moon by the end of the decade.

It's called an INTERNATIONAL space station for a reason.

But you know it was NASA who first deployed giant robot space arms, right?

QuoteNASA | Incandescent Sun - This video takes SDO images and applies additional processing to enhance the structures visible. While there is no scientific value to this processing, it does result in a beautiful, new way of looking at the sun. The original frames are in the 171 Angstrom wavelength of extreme ultraviolet. This wavelength shows plasma in the solar atmosphere, called the corona, that is around 600,000 Kelvin. The loops represent plasma held in place by magnetic fields. They are concentrated in "active regions" where the magnetic fields are the strongest. These active regions usually appear in visible light as sunspots. The events in this video represent 24 hours of activity on September 25, 2011.

Also, this one can do some sweet donuts in that martial dust.

Re: NASA's costs:

For the same amount that we spend in one day air conditioning tents in Afghanistan, we could put a rover on mars for a year.

Cut the A/C for a few days (or insulate the goddamn tents) and we could save up enough scratch to send some people there or something.

But I came here to post this article I found while mindlessly browsing sports blogs at work:

Larry Fitzgerald is a cool dude. How many other pros are going around talking about going to space?

Check out the new Doc on Discovery called Earth From Space. I recently DVR'd it and it is unbelievable (the narration is a little too DRAMATIC). Anyway, all this recent footage from the Space Station is linked to some crazy climate studies they've been carrying out with a handful of new satellites, all in an attempt to connect the life cycles of earth. All these compressed youtube vids are nothing compared to the HD footage in the doc. I highly recommend it. It's info like this that I wish had been around back when I was in high school, real inspiring. Feed it to your kids...

I liked this from that article:

QuoteThe news these days is filled with polarization, with hate, with fear, with ignorance. But while these feelings are a part of us, and always will be, they neither dominate nor define us. Not if we don't let them. When we reach, when we explore, when we're curious – that's when we're at our best. We can learn about the world around us, the Universe around us. It doesn't divide us, or separate us, or create artificial and wholly made-up barriers between us. As we saw on Twitter, at New York Times Square where hundreds of people watched the landing live, and all over the world: science and exploration bind us together. Science makes the world a better place, and it makes us better people.

It's what we can do, and what we must do.

Used by Carl Sagan for his book "Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space". In fact, it was Carl Sagan who asked NASA to have Voyager take the picture as it was hurtling away from us. I highly recommend the book, as well as his last one "Billions and Billions".

I haven't been able to really sit down and watch/listen to this one - it kept pulling me in from various rooms around the house I was working in. The language these aviators/nautical engineers/astronauts use paralleled the language I'm used to hearing from other, shall we say, less credible demographics. It's great to hear familiar conclusions being reached by crew-cut/military personnel. They call it "The Overview Effect," although it sounds similar to Stewart Brand's "why haven't we seen a picture of the whole earth yet?" > Whole Earth Catalog trip.

This colorful view from NASA's Cassini mission is the highest-resolution view of the unique six-sided jet stream at Saturn's north pole known as "the hexagon." This movie, made from images obtained by Cassini's imaging cameras, is the first to show the hexagon in color filters, and the first movie to show a complete view from the north pole down to about 70 degrees north latitude.

Here's a taste,

Hopefully they had enough warning to put their brightest progeny into an Ion-Pulse Hyperdriven capsule and launched him towards a bluish planet orbiting a yellow sun that will give him strength beyond those who live there. And hopefully, when he arrives, he's raised by and elderly intellectual couple rather than some backasswards Kansas farmers.

NatGeo's COSMOS:A SPACETIME ODYSSEY series starts tomorrow night.

http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/cosmos-a-spacetime-odyssey/ (ftp://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/cosmos-a-spacetime-odyssey/)

"Hosted by renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, COSMOS will explore how we discovered the laws of nature and found our coordinates in space and time. It will bring to life never-before-told stories of the heroic quest for knowledge and transport viewers to new worlds and across the universe for a vision of the cosmos on the grandest scale. COSMOS will invent new modes of scientific storytelling to reveal the grandeur of the universe and re-invent celebrated elements of the legendary original series, including the Cosmic Calendar and the Ship of the Imagination. The most profound scientific concepts will be presented with stunning clarity, uniting skepticism and wonder, and weaving rigorous science with the emotional and spiritual into a transcendent experience."

I've been thinking about what happens to time once the speed of light is achieved.
Since the BigBang sent all the matter in the universe flying out at least the speed of light, and the Cosmic Inflation happened at "many times the speed of light," then what does that account for, in respect to time? The bubbles, sure, but I feel there could be something more there.

Regarding the recent big physics breakthrough, here's a video of one of the authors of the theory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrei_Linde) getting told the news.  Probably doesn't come much more satisfying than that having your life's work come to fruition like that.

This show is everything you ever wished for in a space documentary. Amazing visuals. It's on every Sunday on Fox at 9pm or you can stream them here: http://www.cosmosontv.com/ . Next week is when they start to get into the really trippy/Einstein type stuff.

Yeah, the last two weeks have been a little disappointing, IMO. Too much life on Earth, not enough trippy/Einstein type stuff. But I agree the visuals and the simplicity of explaining inordinately complex ideas are on point. I'm looking forward to the next couple of weeks.

Also, I don't know if it's still there but the original series used to be on Netflix. Now that's a must see for "amazing" visuals (you know, for the 80s).

http://www.nerdist.com/2014/06/hubble-just-released-the-best-image-of-our-universe-yet/

QuoteTurn a telescope towards a seemingly empty section of sky and leave the shutter open. As light millions or even billions of years old pours in, the dark sky gets brighter. Leave the shutter open long enough and you’ll get a picture of thousands upon thousands of galaxies. From 2003 to 2009, this is exactly what the Hubble Telescope did, producing one of astronomy’s most famous images, the “Hubble Ultra Deep Field.”

Today, the Hubble Telescope has done it again, only now with an accumulated exposure time of nine whole years and a new wavelength of light.

Friendly reminder that we kinda suck at seeing things that could kill us all.

http://rt.com/news/164024-beast-asteroid-flying-over-earth/

Quote
Gigantic 'Beast' asteroid flying by Earth (VIDEO)

A massive asteroid roughly the size of an entire football stadium that was discovered only months ago is passing by the Earth this week, with professional and amateur astronomers alike having the best chance to watch the flyover on Thursday.

Officially named Asteroid 2014 HQ124, the giant hunk of space mass has been nicknamed the Beast because, at an estimated size of over 1,000 feet wide, it is roughly the size of a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. Initial estimates guessed that the body's diameter was between 400 to 900 meters (1,312 to 2,953 feet), although NASA's NEOWISE has determined the Beast is closer to 325 meters. (The meteor that exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia measured between 17 to 20 meters in diameter.)

An object of such size could obviously pose a huge threat to Earth, although the Beast will fly no closer to the planet than 3.2 lunar distances (roughly equivalent to 716,500 miles). It would only take an object of about 100 feet wide to be destructive to Earth, according to Wired magazine.

For all of its size, the Beast was only detected on April 23. The NASA Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer discovered the Beast flying at approximately 31,000 mph (50,400 kilometers per hour) through space upon examining a fixed backdrop of the star system.

"What's disconcerting is that a rocky/metallic body this large, and coming so very close, should have only first been discovered this soon before its nearest approach," Bob Berman, an astronomer with Internet astronomy outreach venture Slooh, told National Geographic. "HQ214 is at least 10 times bigger, and possibly 20 times, than the asteroid that injured a thousand people last year in Chelyabinsk, Siberia."

"If it were to impact us, the energy released would be measured not in kilotons like the atomic bombs that ended World War II, but in H-bomb type megatons," he continued. "It will be interesting indeed to watch Slooh track and image this substantial intruder as it passes less than a million miles of us, at a speed 17 times greater than that of a high speed rifle bullet."

The Beast marks one of the first major asteroids to pass by Earth since NASA and Slooh partnered earlier this year in an agreement that makes it possible for more citizen scientists to become involved with scouring outer space for asteroids flying near Earth. While large objects like the Beast make headlines, countless smaller asteroids and bodies fly over Earth every day unnoticed.

"While astronomers believe we have spotted 90 percent of the potentially dangerous asteroids that are 1,000 feet wide or bigger," Wired reported, "they estimate that we have detected only 30 percent of the objects that are around 460 feet wide and just 1 percent of the objects the size of the Beast."

A Slooh video of the flyover is included below:

The Beast was over a thousand feet wide...

QuoteThis Hubble Space Telescope image of the star V838 Monocerotis reveals dramatic changes in the illumination of surrounding dusty cloud structures. The effect, called a light echo, unveiled never-before-seen dust patterns when the star suddenly brightened for several weeks in early 2002.

A light echo is light from a stellar explosion echoing off dust surrounding the star that produces enough energy in a brief flash to illuminate surrounding dust. The star presumably ejected the illuminated dust shells in previous outbursts. Light from the latest outburst travels to the dust and then is reflected to Earth.

The phenomena is similar to that of a nova. A typical nova is a normal star that dumps hydrogen onto a compact white-dwarf companion star. The hydrogen piles up until it spontaneously explodes by nuclear fusion -- like a titanic hydrogen bomb -- exposing a searing stellar core with a temperature of hundreds of thousands of degrees Fahrenheit.

By contrast, V838 Monocerotis did not expel its outer layers. Instead, it grew enormously in size. Its surface temperature dropped to temperatures that were not much hotter than a light bulb. This behavior of ballooning to an immense size, but not losing its outer layers, is very unusual and completely unlike an ordinary nova explosion.

The outburst may represent a transitory stage in a star's evolution that is rarely seen. The star has some similarities to highly unstable aging stars called eruptive variables, which suddenly and unpredictably increase in brightness.

V838 Monocerotis is located about 20,000 light-years away from Earth in the direction of the constellation Monoceros, placing the star at the outer edge of our Milky Way galaxy.

All geeked up cause the ISS just flew directly over my house. Like, split it right down the middle. I watched the whole arc, from the moment it came up on the horizon until it disappeared. I grabbed this ISS Spotter app a couple of weeks ago and there weren't any passes until a couple of days ago but tonight was the first good one. It has a map so you can see where it is relative to Earth and alarms for good passes. It's pretty goddamned cool watching that thing fly over your head.

Just over 5 mins or so. The app said 9 mins, but it was kind of obscured at the beginning and end by trees and whatnot. At first there was a star that I thought might have been it, but then the ISS started streaking across the sky. I almost woke my 6 yr old up to see it.

The other cool thing about the map is that you can see where it is in its orbit. About 30 mins before I saw it, it was just over the eastern coast of Australia. By the time it disappeared, it was over Newfoundland.

SpaceShipTwo crashes shortly after Mojave test flight

SpaceShipTwo, the Virgin Galactic space plane, has crashed east of Mojave, according to the director of the Mojave Air and Space Port Stu Witt.

Witt said a 2 p.m. news conference has been scheduled, and no further details will be available until then.

Scanner traffic indicated there was one fatality in the plane crash.  Virgin Galactic previously announced that the rocket plane had "experienced an in-flight anomaly" on its Twitter page.

KGET will have more information on 17 News at Noon.

Of course on twitter, if you follow #CometLanding you'll get some data, too.

This thing (Rosetta) launched ten years ago. Today the Philae lander separated from it to land on the comet. After separation, it took pictures of the Rosetta orbiter...

It should have touched down by now but there is a ~30min delay on signals due to the fact that it's half a million km away...

How the hell you gonna go 300M miles away and forget to charge the battery before you leave?!?

Dwindling battery makes comet probe drill results uncertain

(Reuters) - European Space Agency scientists faced an anxious wait on Friday to see if a probe landed on a comet has enough power left to send results of a drill down into its surface back to Earth 500 million km (300 million miles) away.

Time was getting tight after the probe, released by the Rosetta spacecraft on Wednesday after a 10-year odyssey from Earth, floated away from its planned landing site.

The washing machine-sized craft is now resting in the shadow of a cliff on the celestial body and appears to be surrounded by rocks, preventing sunlight from reaching the solar panels that should power it once its primary batteries run down on Friday.

One of the most important tasks for the 100-kg (220-pound) probe - dubbed Philae and weighing only 1 gram on the comet's low gravity surface - was to drill into rock to analyze samples.

Comets are of interest to scientists because they constitute remnants from the formation of our solar system more than 4.6 billion years ago. These masses of ice and rock have preserved ancient organic molecules like a time capsule and may provide insight into how planets and life evolved.

Philae's drill descended more than 25 centimeters (10 inches) on Friday but ESA said it was unclear whether it had penetrated the comet's surface.

The radio link between Rosetta and Philae has been interrupted as the spacecraft orbits. The next time the mothership will get to contact Philae for developments will be around 1600 ET.

"This will be exciting because we're not sure if the batteries will have enough power to transmit this data," said Stefan Ulamec, Philae lander manager at the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

Compounding problems caused by the lack of light reaching its solar panels, an ESA command for Philae to enter low power mode to maximize battery life did not get through.

The ESA team are looking at options to move the probe into a position where it could draw more light, such as using a flywheel to "hop" the craft out of the enclosure of rocks.

Another solution could be rotating its solar panels, which would not require moving Philae out of its current location.

But they will undertake such measures only if there proves to be enough battery power to transmit the drilling results.

The mission has achieved many breakthroughs, including the first time a spacecraft has followed a comet rather than just whizzing past and the first time a probe has landed on a comet.

If Philae's mission comes to an end on Friday, the Rosetta spacecraft will follow the comet until at least the end of 2015, even as it passes closest to the sun on its orbit.

"This mission is fantastic, let's look at what we have achieved, not at what we would have done differently. This is unique and will be unique forever," said Andrea Accomazzo, the Rosetta flight director.

It's a bummer if it shuts down because of the bouncing but the mission is still an amazing success.
Just a bit ago, they had it rotate to hopefully get in better position to collect light.

Fingers crossed and all that.

To Catch A Comet

About the Program

Billions of kilometers from Earth, a spacecraft the size of a car traveled towards an icy rock 2.5 miles across hurtling through space at tens of kilometers per second. It has been in space for ten years, but on Nov. 12, 2014 it did something no other spacecraft had ever attempted — orbit and land on a comet.

Sneak Peek

Rosetta, the European Space Agency's (ESA) orbiter and Philae, the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) lander are not short of ambition. It has taken a generation, 30 years, to get to this point along a rocky road besieged by technological challenges, faulty launch vehicles and budget constraints, all of which have conspired to stop the mission in its tracks.

The idea behind Rosetta is awesome, but a daunting list of challenges awaited the team at mission control. Unable to carry enough fuel owing to weight restrictions, the Rosetta scientists devised a delicate cat and mouse trajectory to reach their distant destination. In the ten years Rosetta has been in space she has flown around the Earth three times, Mars once and the asteroid belt twice, to gain the momentum she needs to reach her destination. In the months before landing, the team navigated Rosetta safely to a world never before observed at such distances or accuracy. Rosetta orbited the comet before releasing Philae onto the surface. With little gravity from the comet, the team at mission control orbited manually.

Collectively Rosetta and Philae carry a remarkable 21 scientific instruments designed and manufactured globally by hundreds of engineers and visionaries. Each has a purpose, to chip away at the comet's secrets retrieving invaluable data and beaming it back to Earth — promising to unlock the secrets from the formation of the solar system 4.5 billion years ago and even the origins of life itself.

Not only that, Rosetta will follow this colossal comet as it blasts toward and around the Sun.

Rosetta, along with its passenger Philae, are guaranteed to provide a treasure-trove of scientific data and an unforgettable ride.

Awesome... and hilarious...

http://www.vox.com/2015/5/5/8553609/microwave-oven-perytons (http://www.vox.com/2015/5/5/8553609/microwave-oven-perytons)

QuoteRadio signals puzzled astrophysicists for 17 years. They were coming from a microwave oven.

Since 1998, astrophysicists at Australia's Parkes Observatory have been detecting mysterious bursts of radio waves (named "perytons") that seemed to emanate from all parts of the sky. They lasted for just fractions of a second and happened once or twice a year.

Most believed they came from somewhere quite nearby (perhaps resulting from lightning strikes), but the bursts had some characteristics that made it seem like they'd traveled millions of light-years from distant galaxies or other astronomical objects.

The truth, as recently discovered by graduate student Emily Petroff of Swinburne University of Technology, is decidedly more mundane. It turns out the signals were generated by someone at the facility opening the door of a microwave oven while it was still running.

Most astronomers had long been suspicious that the perytons were generated by something on Earth, because it'd explain why they appeared to emanate from all parts of the sky — they weren't coming from the sky at all, and instead were being generated right next to the telescope. Additionally, they almost always occurred during the daytime, when people were working at the facility.

But for years, scientists were unable to find a convincing explanation. The huge radio telescope at Parkes is in a radio quiet zone, which means that cellphones and other sources of radio emissions are banned nearby. And the perytons' frequency, 1.4 gigahertz (GHz), wasn't known to come from any obvious source of radiation.

Earlier this year, Petroff installed an interference monitor at the telescope. Fortuitously, three more perytons occurred in a single week. This monitor can detect a wider range of emissions than the telescope, and it found that along with each peryton at 1.4 GHz, there was a smaller spike of radio waves around 2.5 GHz.

"That led us to thinking, 'What emits at 2.5 gigahertz?'" Petroff told Popular Science. "And the obvious thing was microwaves."

Still, there was a mystery. Microwave ovens — like the one on site used by staff to reheat food — typically operate at around 2.5 GHz, not 1.4.

In a series of experiments, Petroff and others figured out that if you open the microwave's door while it's still running, the machine's magnetron emits a very brief spike of radiation at 1.4 GHz, as well as the standard 2.5 GHz. In all likelihood, the perytons were caused by a staff member with a habit of opening the microwave door before it was finished cooking. As National Geographic's Nadia Drake points out, this is why many other radio telescope facilities ban microwave ovens.

The scientific value of this discovery
But there's a bright side to this deflating finding. One of the reasons Petroff was looking into perytons was because of a related phenomenon, called "fast radio bursts" (FRBs), which continues to baffle scientists.

These are also short spikes in radio waves, but they genuinely seem to come from beyond the galaxy. And the microwave oven doesn't seem to have been causing them, too — so this work helps to rule out one possible terrestrial origin for FRBs.

The search for where our children's children's (x1000) children are gonna go once we sufficiently fuck up this planet is on!!

http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-33641648

Quote
'Earth 2.0' found in Nasa Kepler telescope haul
A haul of planets from Nasa's Kepler telescope includes a world sharing many characteristics with Earth.

Kepler-452b orbits at a very similar distance from its star, though its radius is 60% larger.

Mission scientists said they believed it was the most Earth-like planet yet.

Such worlds are of interest to astronomers because they might be small and cool enough to host liquid water on their surface - and might therefore be hospitable to life.

Nasa's science chief John Grunsfeld called the new world the "closest so far" to Earth.

And John Jenkins, Kepler data analysis lead at Nasa's Ames Research Center in California, added: "It's a real privilege to deliver this news to you today. There's a new kid on the block that's just moved in next door."

The new world joins other exoplanets such as Kepler-186f that are similar in many ways to Earth.

Determining which is most Earth-like depends on the properties one considers. Kepler-186f, announced in 2014, is smaller than the new planet, but orbits a red dwarf star that is significantly cooler than our own.

Kepler-452b, however, orbits a parent star which belongs to the same class as the Sun: it is just 4% more massive and 10% brighter. Kepler-452b takes 385 days to complete a full circuit of this star, so its orbital period is 5% longer than Earth's.

The mass of Kepler-452b cannot be measured yet, so astronomers have to rely on models to estimate a range of possible masses, with the most likely being five times that of Earth. If it is rocky, the world would likely still have active volcanism and its gravity would be roughly twice that on our own planet.

The new world is included in a haul of 500 new possible planets sighted by the Kepler space telescope around distant stars.

Twelve of the new candidates are less than twice Earth's diameter, orbiting in the so-called habitable zone around their star.

This zone refers to a range of distances at which the energy radiated by the star would permit water to exist as a liquid on the planet's surface if certain other conditions are also met.

Of these 500 candidates, Kepler-452b is the first to be confirmed as a planet.

Dr Suzanne Aigrain, from the University of Oxford, who was not involved with the study, told BBC News: "I do believe the properties described for Kepler-452b are the most Earth-like I've come across for a confirmed planet to date.

"What seems even more significant to me is the number of planets in the habitable zone of their host stars with radii below two Earth radii; 12 is quite a few compared to the pre-existing Kepler planet catalogue.

"It bodes well for their attempts to provide a more robust measure of the incidence of Earth-like planets, which is the top-level goal of the Kepler mission."

While similar in size and brightness to the Sun, Kepler-452b's host star is 1.5 billion years older than ours. Scientists working on the mission therefore believe it could point to a possible future for the Earth.

"If Kepler-452b is indeed a rocky planet, its location vis-a-vis its star could mean that it is just entering a runaway greenhouse phase of its climate history," explained Dr Doug Caldwell, a Seti Institute scientist working on the Kepler mission.

"The increasing energy from its aging sun might be heating the surface and evaporating any oceans. The water vapour would be lost from the planet forever."

"Kepler-452b could be experiencing now what the Earth will undergo more than a billion years from now, as the Sun ages and grows brighter."

Dr Don Pollacco, from Warwick University, UK, who was not involved with the latest analysis, told the BBC: "Kepler data allows you to estimate the relative size of a planet to its host star, so if you know the size of the host, hey presto, you know the size of the planet.

"However, to go further - i.e. is it rocky? - involves measuring the mass of the planets and this is much more difficult to do as the stars are too far away for these measurements (which are incredibly difficult) to make.

"So in reality they have no idea what this planet is made of: It could be rock but it could be a small gassy ball or something more exotic maybe."
Dr Chris Watson, from Queen's University Belfast, UK, commented: "Other Kepler habitable zone planets may well be more Earth-like in this respect. For example, Kepler-186f is approximately 1.17 Earth radii, and Kepler-438b is approximately 1.12 Earth radii.

"In fact, at 1.6 Earth radii, this would place Kepler-452b in a category of planet called a 'Super-Earth' - our Solar System does not actually have any planet of this type within it! Super-Earths are hugely interesting for this reason, but one might then say, well, is it really 'Earth-like' given all this?"

He added: "When we look at the type of star Kepler-452b orbits, then it seems to be a star not too dissimilar to our Sun... The other Kepler habitable zone planets that have been discovered so far tend to be orbiting M-dwarfs - stars far cooler than our Sun, and therefore the planets need to orbit much closer to receive the same levels of heating.

"So it may be a potentially rocky super-Earth in an Earth-like orbit (in terms of host star and orbital distance). It's this combination of the host star and orbit that set it apart in my opinion."

WATER ON MARS, BITCHEZ

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-09-28/nasa-detects-liquid-water-on-mars

Quote
NASA Detects Liquid Water on Mars
Scientists confirm that strange streaks on the Red Planet are formed by flowing water.

The holy grail of space exploration is to find extraterrestrial life. An important precursor to that is finding liquid water—and that's exactly what NASA today announced scientists have discovered on Mars.

The findings, which are described in the journal Nature Geoscience, offer an explanation for peculiar, long streaks that sometimes appear on sloping Martian terrain. The dark features, which can reach 5 meters wide and more than 100 meters long, were first noticed in 2010. By analyzing their reflected light signature, a team of eight scientists has concluded that the streaks consist of mineral salts that easily absorb moisture—and that flowing water is the likeliest explanation for their appearance.

The Red Planet has been known for years to have ice, and its surface bears the topographical scars of ancient water flow. This latest research, though, is the first to provide compelling evidence for the ongoing existence of flowing water on Mars.

The findings date back to 2010, when Lujendra Ojha, then a University of Arizona undergraduate and now the lead author on this new research, started sifting through images from a powerful NASA camera orbiting the Red Planet. His professor, Alfred McEwen, is another co-author on the research and the camera's lead scientist for NASA. "There were these stark, linear, narrow features forming" all over the planet, Ojha said, "and they were only forming when the temperature was ideal for liquid water." In the Martian winter, the features, called "recurring slope lineae," disappeared.

Another instrument, called the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars, or CRISM, records the wavelengths of light reflecting off Mars's surface. Scientists use CRISM to collect light spectra, match them to the known light signatures of minerals, and then conclude, for example, what soil might be made of on another planet.

Now a graduate student at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Ojha began looking at the CRISM data for Mars's sloping streaks at the end of last year, unpacking pixel after pixel. Using these images, he and his colleagues confirmed what they had already suspected—the presence of salts called perchlorates that are terrific at absorbing water.

The significance of the finding goes beyond scientists' usual glee at the discovery of anything Earth-like in the heavens. Liquid water is a necessary precursor to life. So if Mars has water, it might also ...

Well, don't go there just yet.

The new images don't actually show flowing water, which doesn't last long on the Martian surface. It evaporates quickly, and the thin atmosphere wicks it up and away. The orbiter collects its data at about 3 p.m. Mars time. That's a bad time for watching water, because the relative humidity is so low. Eight hours earlier or later, the scientists may have caught the water itself, Ojha said.

Instead, what's left are these patches of freshly hydrated salts, which bond with molecular water whenever it's around, leaving dark streaks. That's what Ojha and colleagues see in the images, and how they know there's water on Mars. It's locked in these salts, and couldn't be there without some recent influx.

The ultimate question, whether Mars can host living things, belongs squarely to astrobiology, the study of life's origins.

Toward the end of their new paper, Ojha, McEwen, and their co-authors say that the conditions on Mars—arid and salt-rich—are similar in some ways to the Atacama Desert in western Latin America. There, water-retaining salt beds provide an oasis for microbes. Unfortunately for E.T.-hunters, on Mars "the water activity in perchlorate solutions may be too low to support known terrestrial life," the authors wrote.

There's an irony in searching for life-friendly conditions on Mars, or elsewhere. The more promising the discovery, the more thoughtful humans (or our robots) should be in approaching it. Areas where life might propagate are declared "special regions" and treated with caution by scientists. That's because virtually everything on Earth—your smartphone, the doorbell, bananas, yesterday's socks, spacecraft—is slathered with microbes. NASA has an entire Office of Planetary Protection to ensure that the search for extraterrestrial life doesn't turn up expat terrestrial life.

"Maybe in the future we can have a mission to go there," Ojha said, "but I think we have to be really careful about transferring of life from Earth to Mars. We might be the ones creating the second Genesis."

http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2016/09/27/495622695/this-afternoon-elon-musk-unveils-his-plan-for-colonizing-mars

Quote
Elon Musk Unveils His Plan For Colonizing Mars

Billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk says his space transport company, SpaceX, will build a rocket system capable of bringing people to Mars and supporting a permanent city on the red planet.

"It's something we can do in our lifetimes," he said in a speech at the International Astronautical Congress in Guadalajara, Mexico that was streamed online and watched by more than 100,000 people. "You could go."

Musk described plans to send at least a million humans to Mars and establish a self-sustaining city there. He said he expects people to reach Mars within a decade, and described four requirements for a new rocket fleet, which would travel to Mars approximately every two years, when Mars and Earth come closest to each other.

The requirements for a feasible rocket system are full re-usability, the ability to refuel in orbit, the ability to produce fuel on Mars and identifying the ideal propellant. Because the atmosphere of Mars is largely made of carbon dioxide, and previous missions have found ice on the planet, Musk said he though it would be possible to produce a methane fuel there.

But the centerpiece of the speech was a video simulation of a the massive spacecraft and rocket to get Mars colonizers to their destination. (Within SpaceX, they have been nicknamed the "BFS" and "BFR," which are acronyms for phrases NPR is too polite to spell out.)

One thing Musk was less specific about was who would pay for it all, saying it would be "a huge public private partnership," and that he expected support to "snowball." He did say the cost per person would need to decrease significantly in order for colonization to work. Right now, Musk estimates a trip to Mars would cost $10 billion per person. Musk says he would like to bring that cost down to about $200,000.

Musk is very wealthy, and said in his speech that his "only motivation" for amassing personal wealth is to work on making life multi-planetary. He is simultaneously supporting SpaceX, Tesla Motors and SolarCity.

The speech also comes just weeks after a high-profile SpaceX failure: An unmanned rocket and its payload were destroyed in an explosion two days before the rocket was scheduled to launch.

It's not the first setback for SpaceX, which has seen rockets explode before — and, as the Two-Way reported, came after a series of successes for the company. But Musk called it the company's "most difficult and complex failure we have ever had in 14 years."

The Guardian notes that Musk's "fail-fast" approach to rocket-building is intentional, and tied to his ambition. But the explosion has led some to question whether SpaceX can reliably send cargo to the International Space Station, "let alone take people to Mars," the newspaper writes.

Why can't we just use Hubble to take pictures of Pluto? (http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/why-nasa-couldn-t-just-use-hubble-telescope-to-see-pluto-1.3321222)

So I'm getting pretty jazzed about this eclipse, the path of which is going to pass directly over my house in less than two weeks.

Been nice knowing you, earthlings.

Watching the eclipse today was completely a surreal experience, I cannot even put into words the flood of emotions that I felt during the totality.  Literally was jumping up and down laughing and yelling.  Really glad I made the 30 mile drive to see a complete eclipse and that I got to watch and share it with my family too.

I'm already planning on being there for 2024, party at PG's house?

It was 80% here, and I was kinda disappointed to be honest.

I didn't have the proper eyewear to look at it directly, so I obviously missed out in that respect, but I thought it would still be cool to enjoy the surrealism of it getting so dark in the middle of the afternoon.  I'm not exactly sure what I was expecting, I guess I imagined that it would look kinda like twilight.  I'm not sure where I got this idea from.  In the end, though, it just looked like an otherwise sunny day got overcast for a bit.  Oh well.

Glad you had a great experience, Hicks!  That sounds unreal!

It got pretty dark, but it surprised me how significant of a temperature change there was.  The other thing was you could see an orange glow on the horizon where the sun was still shining, but it was on both sides so it was sort of like seeing a sunrise and a sunset at the same time!

That was a strange and cool experience. It was at 10 or so minutes before totality that things really began to change – shadows getting shallower, the air darkening shades at a time, insects slowly making noise. Really, almost any amount of sun is still incredibly powerful. So, as the moon moved into position the world sank into post-twilight and there was a black hole in the sky ringed with a faint hoop of fire. I think I stared at it almost entirely, with a glance here to put my arm around my wife as we stood barefoot in the river. I could see the corona waving from all sides to a length of about one sun's worth. Things were quiet. And it was over even sooner than it had begun.

Was 92% here. Crazy stuff; it got eerie outside. Like Independence Day where everyone stops and looks up at the sky as it's getting darker. I had some glasses too so it was cool watching it from the beginning. I def noticed the temp change as well.
