I might do this over spac, but idk 6 sets of phish at spac seem good to me, just saw three nights of ween and yeah it was epic, jrad comes through a lot, vulfpeck and white denim though....thats pretty freakin sweet.
and there be lots more announced im assuming....decisions, decisions, if phil n friends was added to this then it would be a no brainer.

the prices might end up there but the past few years they've started out lower (so if you buy in February you'll save like 100 bucks as opposed to buying in August). Hopefully they keep that up. Also you can buy a student ticket, those are a good bit cheaper and I don't think they verify that you're actually in school (one of my dad's friends bought a student ticket last year...dude's in his early 50's and had no problem)

True. Hopefully can get one on the tier 2 or something that ends up being a little cheaper than full price. Won't be able to get one this month with the pending phish ticket request. I remember getting a student ticket the first year actually and wasn't a student and worried they would check for a student ID or something.

yeah the extra 130 dollars to camp is shitty but you do split that up with your campsite of 4 people it looks like so its really only like 340 bucks per person, 300 for the fest is pretty good deal.

Friends of mine who went last year had terrible things to say about the organization and execution. Ingress, egress, camping, toilets, etc. I know last year was a shit show already with the weather, so not sure how much that played a role and/or my friends just drew a bad hand.

Doesn't include your super VIP passes for all eight of you. Total with inconvenience charges ($1316.14, btw) is a whopping $32,608.14!!!

Just over $4k per person... And squeezing 8 into that bus means sharing some bunks, I'm sure.

Dopapod, brah. Check out the 4/28 video I posted in that thread. I enjoy the incredulous response I get from a fellow Phish lifer friend of mine when I tell him how I think Dopapod jams better than Phish these days, but I'm only partly saying it to troll him. Phish's bar may be higher, but Dopapod reaches theirs much more regularly.

right on...., you're correct. I think I was being a bit too harsh in my criticism upon second thought.

Of all the up and coming 'jam bands' out there -- Dopapod does indeed openly improvise more than most. Rob and Eli blow me away with their musician ship every time i see them.

Maybe its just the drums that prevent me from fuuulllly feel like they are 100% improvising.  He's just so.... 'perfect' in his time and playing.... there's never a moment of "Woah, where is this gonna go?" -- cuz, it always goes exactly where you think it'll go.... bigger, louder, more notes, peak, end. With that said, I like Scotty more than Fro as far as improv goes...

there are def exceptions to this. I am, by no means, an avid Dopapod listener and shows that ive heard like the Sinclair in Boston the past two years have totally showcased open ended type 2 jamming - I just havent heard that to be the norm. I'd love to be pointed towards other examples of this open ended jamming if there are others...

Well... Phish and Grateful Dead are the preeeeeeetttty cool.  I suppose, by default they are "Jam Bands"... but really, IMO, they transcend that term.... Ya know... they actually...jam.

... unfortunately, I can't name a single other current "Jam Band" that I'm 'into'...

If you want to lump MMW into Jam Bands, well then of course.... along with other Jazz Oriented bands that get lumped with "Jammers" but really aren't "Jam Bands"...

That garcias forest is going to be a super jam late night-ish stage I think - so thats new compared to the other two

when I went they had 1 stage that wasnt even announced on the festival schedule and it just went from like midnight to 3 am, now they have 3 late night options.

and I thought there were 4 late night stages but just saw that its split up Blue Ridge Bowl Late Night and Blue Ridge Bowl Morning sets so only 3 late night stages

from what I understand Garcia's Forest is pretty much the Jerry tent from years past in a woods setting rather than a tent on shakedown. super tight sound system playing soundboard GD/JGB recordings nonstop, not really what I'd consider a "stage" but I guess it counts? either way that's been one of the highlights for me in the past so will definitely try to check that out

So I just read yesterday that this fest has two main stages, side by side. What's that about? Does the next act start immediately after the other one finishes? Isn't the break to allow the stage to be reset usually a good thing?

It's definitely not the only festival like that. I kind of dig it, you get a little bit of interplay between artists (which is occasionally hilarious - see Bobby vs. Phil) and everything sort of flows between sets.

look deeper - they are doing away with the two-stage approach this year. One stage with a turntable stage so they can set up one band while the other is playing and just rotate the stage - 10 minutes between bands instead of immediate - much better, imo.

Aww, I was interested to see Ween jamming into Phish. They could've played Roses Are Free together.

I've never been to Lockn', but back in '05 there was The Big Summer Classic tour that had Umphrey's, YMSB, Keller Williams, Spearhead, New Monsoon and SCI and each band came out and played with the band before them before the first band left the stage. It was a pretty interesting show. Keller -> YMSB was sweet!

I need to chime in here on jambands.  I think people have different concepts of what a jamband is.  Hell, I think some people consider Blues traveler a jamband.

I don't really post much on here anymore because I just don't listen to current Phish.  When they decide to jam, it just sounds generic to me and forced.  I'd almost rather they just played their songs and went a little type I jamming but played more technically correct, but that is me.  Lots of people dig current Phish though so it is all good.

The bands you've listed have their own things about them.  I know moe. well.  For me, the beauty of a moe. show is their transition to the next song.  It is patient and it flows for me.  You can hear the buildup to the next song and sometimes you can hear 3 different songs coming and they segue into a totally different song.  I could think of some shows where there is a 5 minute buidup into Head and I think it is the best thing ever.  If you don't know their songs or recognize Head, you wouldn't "get it" or it could be boring I guess.  I'm sure there are interviews and articles to contrast it but I think moe. considers themselves a rock band.  I've always considered jamband more of a fan term.
I've heard bisco does in fact jam and use type II improve.  I don't like them but looking at their shows on the archive, they seem to be doing something.  I'm not going to listen because it is not my sound.

I don't listen to every Dopapod show.  They do a lot of type I type jamming,  There are a lot of teases in their songs.  It's weird because I never thought they sounded as much like Phish as others have said.   This past Sinclair run (I think it was night 1), they sounded more like Phish at times than I have noticed in the past.  They have definitely shown they can be spacey.  Honestly, if they aren't doing it every show, it is probably because that is not the sound they are chasing.  Just my view.  And I also thought Scotty was just amazing the whole Sinclair run.

A lot of the bands you've mentioned have made it.  They are all different in their own ways.  I think they each offer something to fans.  I like some of them and don't like others.  You know what you like.  Not every band wants to go into a spacey type II jam.  These bands have been on the road playing music for a while now.  This is what they want to do.  Ok.  I really don't know what Bisco wants to do, but I am sure they want to do something.  End rant.  I just listen to a lot of music (not bisco though) and I think a lot of these bands offer a lot to music fans.  I appreciate all the great music that is still being put out there.

Are you saying the sets would actually overlap, like they're supposed to jam together from their respective stages? Or just a little wave and lift of the hat as they pass each other by?

If so, that's funny, because yesterday I was reading a silly Lockn-made listicle called "13 things you just don't get until you go to Lockn" or some such, and the adjacent stage thing was definitely an item they trumpeted. Oops.

Didn't I read that one of the Weens was none too impressed when Phish started covering them? Wonder if that'll make this co-billing at all awkward.

Dan, interesting comment re: moe., and I agree. They can draw out those transitions very patiently and deftly. I've never really heard any kind of type II jamming out of moe., even in their longer excursions (though I don't claim to have heard but a small fraction of their live output), and I think that's fine as I don't imagine it's a big part of what they're trying to do (if any part at all).

As far as Dopapod, I certainly wouldn't say they sound like Phish. Sonically, I'd say the parallels pretty much start and stop with their mutual and occasional fondness for intricate, proggy compositions, although Dopapod's tend to have a darker and weirder bent to them (as they do in general). I do feel like I can hear Trey's influence in Rob's playing from time to time, which I don't believe he'd deny as he's on record as being a big Trey fan. Other overlaps are more so around the edges and may be incidental or just inevitable given the spaces that rock bands work within. (For example, they have a new tune whose outro solo/jam reminds me of Sample's. Well, OK. Organ + guitar + bass + drums + similar chord progression and that'll do it.)

and VDB, I'm not a closet anything.  if I was going to vote for Trump, I'd freely say I am.  if I had to rank all the candidates, he's at the very bottom of the list and I didn't like anyone who ran this year.
I voted for Christie in the primary even after he suspended his campaign because I thought he was the best of the group, even though he has plenty of faults himself.
I'll be voting for Hillary.  once I see all our ballot questions, I'll gladly post what I'll vote for on all those too.

my last rant on FB.  I love local musicians who "friend" me even though they have never spoken to me either because I record music or they just tag people to promote shows and then use their FB page to promote their political views.  I just don't understand why people want to make people vote for someone they want to win.  I let everyone decide who they want to vote for based on their own agenda.

I agree. At least not again in our lifetimes.

There just isn't any touring bands out there with the density that  :syf: and  :phish: had.  The music was on-point but it was/is so much more than just that....

Bands like Radiohead or My Morning Jacket will continue to sell out arenas/amphitheaters but they'll never get thousands of people following them around the country.  Bands like UM/Moe/DB are either past their prime or topped out at theaters/clubs.  And the upcoming front-runners in the 'jam-scene (Twiddle, Dopapod, Papadosio etc.) I just don't see having enough musical depth (like Phish/Dead) to appeal to the masses.  Which.... that's okay. Phish and Dead were the anomaly, not the normal.

Also, if you look at the timeline of things.....  :syf: started in 63.   :phish: in 83. Each band was "huge" about 10-15 years after they started...  what band started in 2003 and now has a massive cult following them around the world? Justin Bieber?

I'm gonna throw out an unpopular opinion here...

The guys currently doing JRAD - those specific five guys - could be that next band to be huge. Not by playing Dead tunes, mind you. But if they made a choice to hunker down and be a band and write original material they could turn into a power house.

I'm not a fluffer of those guys by any means. I have only seen them twice and I'm not all in that they are the end-all be-all. But there is an abundance of talent, listening, group-think, etc. in that band. If they really got after their own sound, songs, etc. they could be a force.

Also, never gonna happen.

I know the thread is off topic at this point, but oh well.

I've always wondered about these guys that have stalled in other projects.  Is it the fan base that is just not willing to learn new music and are willing to accept these guys because the songs are familiar?

it's weird because Marco's last 2 solo albums have gone in a new direction with more lyrics and just a different sound.

I think it is a supply and demand thing.  if Phish decides to stop playing in 15 years, are fans going to want to spend their money and see someone else?  if so, they'll buy tickets and that leads to bigger venues.
I've never worried about how big bands get.  I'll go see music that I enjoy. over the past few years, some fo my favorite shows have been in the Lizard lounge which has a capacity of 105 people.

Almost certainly. We saw that during the hiatus. And weren't Phish themselves the beneficiaries of this after August 1995?

And I agree about seeing shows at smaller venues. It's a nice change of pace to go from seeing Phish with 20k other people to seeing a band you also really, really like in a small room where you can pretty much stand wherever you want and maybe even talk to the guys after the show.

Thanks for the heads-up, Erik. I've been hoping that set would pop up.

From the people who went how did y'all like the fest? Was it the ultimate jam band fest experience you were expecting?

I didn't catch every minute of it, but I think the live webcast was only broadcast from the main stage. I was pissed on Thursday night when I stayed up past my bedtime for JRAD and it wasn't on (although I guess they showed it the day after given Hicks' Not-So-LST?). SiriusXM didn't either; they played sets from the prior day until the first main stage act started playing. Glad the AUDs for some of the other stages are popping up.
