Quote
Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann—who's currently touring with his band 7 Walkers—shared his thoughts on Furthur in a story by The Press Republican that was released today.

"I haven't really got much interest in them. They sound just like the other bands out there doing it. What do you call those bands that copy other bands—" Kreutzmann said. "Anyways, I don't feel they're doing anything really new with their music."

Kreutzmann went on to say, "The saddest thing is that they (Furthur) hired a guitar player that's not Warren Haynes. It's too bad. They should have hired a great solo guitar player."

The drummer last made his rounds with former GD bandmates Bob Weir and Phil Lesh—and guitarist Warren Haynes—in 2009 as The Dead. Furthur, which consists of Lesh and Weir, plus newcomers John Kadlecik (Dark Star Orchestra) and drummer Joe Russo (Benevento/Russo Duo), formed and began touring that same year.

7 Walkers will next play on December 9 at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT, while Furthur will ring in the New Year at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco.

I don't know if this has already been brought up, but I figured I would share anyways. My laptop is in the shop, and I've been using my iPhone to paug, so it's kinda hard to read a whole bunch of topics.

Anyways, it sounds like Billy K is a little jealous.

I hadn't heard that yet. Thanks.

And also, it's Furthur, with 2 u's and no e.

You haven't lived until you've had a robot shart in your ear and followed along in the live setlist thread while it happens.

he can say whatever he wants, although its a shame that they all cant get along.
i never thought phil and bob would tour together again, but look at them now.
they all really need to set aside their differences and be brothers again while they can.

Dishy Phil and Bobby take a stab at Billy and Mickey in Rolling Stone earlier this year? I don't remember exactly, but I think I remember them saying something like how they are trying to move in a new direction, and Billy and Mickey weren't really picking up on that. I also heard they mentioned something how they are sick and tired of the 20 minute drum slow every show.

Like I said, I don't remember what the article said hardly at all. I don't even know if I read it. I just remember hearing something along those lines.

Dammit!! Meant to say "didn't". I've only had this phone for around a month, so I'm still getting used to the keyboard.

I love Billy K, but those quotes are classless imo.

QFT.

All I have to say is within the last year I have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to catch Furthur 3 or 4 times, Rhythm Devils once, and 7 Walkers once and have thoroughly enjoyed myself at every show. I don't disagree with any thing that these incredibly talented musicians touch simply out of respect for what they have done for music and me as a person. On the topic of  John K, I saw him with Dark Star a few times and I'm not going to lie I wasn't moved very much but I have finally began to accept him for what he is and get involved with it after the mini west coast Furthur tour I did previously this fall.  I personally don't enjoy Bobby's new tone all that much and when Phil sings it sounds like a deaf walrus mating call but I still don't bitch and complain about what they are doing.  I would rather be dancing my ass of to them then sitting at my house with the woman watching fucking tv, wouldn't you guys?  For Billy to be making comments like that are just uncalled for IMHO.  The last time all these boys shared a stage in what 2009 I think it was?? , it was complete crap.  I could have eaten an entire quarter paper and still have been able to decipher how awful it was, and for the most part I'm a sober show go-er!!!  Furthur and 7 Walkers are both doing a better job then 'The Dead' did.  So after this whiskey driven rant about disrespect and how I am disappointed in one of my favorite drummers of all time all I have to say is this:

Furthur, other ones, the dead, 7 Walkers, Rhythm Devils, Phil & Friends, Ratdog, etc... are NOT THE FUCKING GRATEFUL DEAD! NOTHING WILL EVER BE ABLE TO REPLACE THAT AND I REPEAT NOTHING! So Billy stop bitching because they have a bigger fan base and get more media coverage or whatever it is that has pissed you off and just play your fucking music for us so we can at least get a small percentage of that spark back that you all used to create every night you took the stage together! So to Furthur and 7 Walkers I thank you guys for doing what you are doing and please keep it up, if nobody else feels this way at least do it for me.

The "cover band" comment really doesn't make any sense at all.

Is John Fogerty a "cover band" when he plays "Fortunate Son" at a show (irony intended)

Is Lou Reed a "cover band" when he belts out "Sweet Jane"?

Is Trey doing a cover when he plays "Wilson" in an acoustic mini set at a TAB show?

To me the answer to all of these questions would be no.  That is because I define a cover as something written, no necessarily performed, by someone else.

mattstick

I don't know the breakdown of the material, but there is a lot of Garcia/Hunter stuff in Furthur's repertoire.

Does that make them a 50% cover band?
