listened to all of it!
my second monster other one today!
maybe i was burnt on the whole thing, but i didnt really get into this version until post second verse and  the transition into bobby mcgee... the first 25min or so of this version were CHOCK full of straight Space... though i must admit jerry was all the fuck over those 25 min. it almost sounded like he was working off a LSD hangover from the bickershaw festi by smokin a ton in the dam and then palying his way through this by making every sound possible he could get out of his strat!
though maybe still i'd view this as a warm up for the next night's star. pretty cool...not sure if i'd even listened to this before. thanks.

nice glad you like it!  for me it grabs my attention from the outset, Jerry's guitar howls.  It really is an atypical reading and to be surrounded by such mammoth versions, it easily gets overlooked.
I wouldn't say it was a warm-up for anything but rather it was truly it.  I'm not a big fan of Bobby McGee per se but this version is killer, again Jerry is playing so well.  All in all an amazing GD moment.  I'll listen to 9Sept. and get back to you.  +k for listening.

susep...  my apologies for getting off subject.  :-)

You're right about this version.  It's a monster.  Jerry starts this off by blowing you away with riff after riff.  Crazy fingers man... cuh-razy!!! That trademark "follow my lead" flow that Jerry was so good at.  Sometimes I wonder if the rest of the band knew that they sounded like they were trying so hard to keep up with him.  And then the song just kind of melts into a surreal flow.  Classic Dead right there.  A bit of exploratory riffage to follow before heading back into the main theme.  And then yet more exploratory jamming following Bobby's vocals.  Jerry goes NUTS with the wah pedal and the wild string scraping.  I'm really glad Keith was on board for these gigs.  His piano lends a great vibe to these monster Other Ones.  The windup of this version is just perfect whilst heading into Bobby McGee...  I love it.

I'm going to listen to the whole gig tomorrow.  You've inspired me.  Great pick.  (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y151/dead_ahead/tup-1.gif) (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y151/dead_ahead/tup-1.gif)

Just fired this up so I'm gonna post stream-of-gumbo-like as it goes along...

Jerry is ready and rolling out of the gate. Much shreddage...
Keith is def. on board with Jerry's agenda but Jerry is already wailing at some deep space 4 minutes in!
At 5.5 mins we are in a quiet jam, notes and bends dripping from Jerry's fingers.
Billy keeps it loose with low rolls and cymbals.

8 minutes Jerry has remembered what song they're in and begins building it up with some sweet dissonance from Keith on the build. the tempo and volume increase but it's nearly two minutes before the whole band comes together and stays there for a true TOO jam. Keith is really high in the mix and standing strong on this shit.

Phil is kinda blurry in some of the mp3 lossey-ness but I can tell he's back there bouncing off Jerry.

@ 11m We get a verse! Nice Pigpen organ riffs in the old-school style!
Annnnnnnd Deeper space before the 13min mark hits.
Jerry is just getting nasty in the 15-16minute range. scratching and rocking the wah and trying to dissolve my brain.
woah...

Keith is channeling Ives over on his side of the stage

Oh man.. Pig is still onstage and applying nice punctuation with the organ. Hell yeah!
Phil is dropping the doom and gloom bombs

20mins and Keith and Billy are working a cool jam. Man I could get down to this!

23 mins things are starting to sound like TOO a tad
oh yeah, here they go. Jerry is out to say something with this bitch... or at least melt some face.
it's kind of loping along though, not exactly full steam
by 26mins you think you're gonna get another verse then it all falls apart

Wait.. they're putting it back together...
28.5 Phil is driving and everybody is buckled in straight on theme.

Wow.
I've never heard this riff that Jerry is hitting @ 29min
At least not with this tone.. way cool.

And now, a minute later it's gone and Jerry's just about on his own... Phil's following along through some meandering leads.

Bobby's chording a tiny bit.
Now he and Phil seem to be linked up and Jerry's pouring some beautiful notes atop the beautiful accompaniment they're providing The progression reminds me vaguely of Lost Sailor, actually...But only for a moment, and Jerry's not anywhere near that.

@ 34 Keith hits a stray chord on the piano but he's no where near what Jerry's doing. Jerry is stringing a series of ascending notes to the top of the neck until... woah!

Bobby's singing Me & Bobby McGee out of nowhere. He must've been conspiring with the rest of the band behind Jerry's back.

Jerry's all about the backing vocals on Me & Bobby McGee tonight and his solos are terrific. Nice to hear a touch of Pig's keys over there too.

Hold up!
Now we go back into TOO?
Cool.

Jerry's ripping it on the main theme here.
Woah.. Verse two comes on. (pretty much same as the first save the words, of course.)
Thats 30 minutes in between verses, btw...
And then the thing trickles away into Wharf Rat...

Awesome pick susep!

just finished listening to 9Sept.72, good version.  I like how around 23:00, Jerry is exploding sonic screams w/ Phil adding lines into a serene jam.  Bob leads w/ a slight Spanish jam feel rythym before the jam morphs several more times.  All in all good version.

But it would have gotten a few minutes in my mix were I making it now.

For the record, I did use 5/16 and 8/22 from that year.

I'm gonna post stream-of-gumbo-like as it goes along...

Jam begins w/ much ferocity out of drumz > everyone is playing with great energy.  Jerry's first deviation around 1:05 is breathtaking.  I'm sure playing the 'dam must have been epiphinous for them.  Jerry plays with a barage of notes, signaling he is already in a zone.  Things begin to mellow near 3:30, Garcia goes into one of his classic bluegrass picking styles before mellowing into some swing.  Nice space here, Phil laying it down sweet.  A lot of the notes Jerry plays remind of Hundred Year Hall.  I love his tone on this tour being a huge Fender fan.  Jam still mellow and spacey around 7:00 before Garcia begins a low funk riff increasing the pace.  Here he explodes into a The Other One tiger riff.  Billy and Phil re-convalesce.  Jerry switches to rythym and goes back into his TOO varied riff.  Picking up speed he leads in off that being chased by Lesh.  Keith and Bob chording aggressively, no doubt inspired by Garcia.  Main theme after 11:00 into Spanish Lady >
Heavy dissonance space, free.  Phil contemplating Footsteps, classic acid test like experimentation here.  Jerry emitting scary sounds, tweaking the wha.  Really hammering on his strings into a super growl Tiger, sounding very much like an animal roar(Garcia = Leo).  Growl into mellow space, Jerry way out ahead of everyone leaving the others meandering, confused, not in sync neither in tempo or key w/ Garcia.  More dissonance, Phil beginning to drop bombs w/ feedback.  Memories of the Luftwaffle, chaos.  In comes Billy and Phil to the rescue at 20:00 creating a nice segue.  Jer locks in at 20:40, nice high energy swing.  Bob low in the mix or seems not active.  Jerry downshifts into another finger modulation.  His strat emitting a great overall tone, tubular.  Garcia chording, trying to maintain the jam's initial propulsion.  Jam picks back up into another TOO themed jam >
Jerry and Keith hooking up well, great thematic jamming led by Garcia's energy and creativity.  More fingerpicking into cool chording by Jerry at 26:50 where he takes more flight, Bob underneath, Phil in between.  Great mix.  At 29:00 Jerry plays a unique series of notes, very experimental for the period.  The jam quiets w/ him and just Bob and Phil.  Garcia gazing into the audience.  Trippy Garcia, Bob laying down a nice chordal segue.  Slight Spanish Jam feel.  Sounds as though Jerry wants to end it but they keep spacing on before Bob and Phil drop into Bobby McGee >
nice version, inspired vocals.  Tasty leads by Jer, liquid.  Bakers-field Garcia. >
back into The OO, Jerry ripping off some more great lines.  2nd verse > WR.

A+

I listened to this TOO this past Thursday evening, and it was mind blowing.  The band was so, so tight.  I loved the tempo change during Bobby McGee.  It is also incredibly psychedelic too, and Jerry's tone and style seem a bit out of the norm in this version.  Great pick, and thanks for the download.

listened this AM

whoa  :-)

anyone hear a little Spanish Jam shortly before Bobby Magee, about 30 min or so?

+k
I meant to comment about this earlier.  I could see how you "heard" Spanish jam, but it sounded like a coincidence a la the highly debated 1995/12/31 FOTM tease.

Thanks, man. Great choice. I believe I had this on cassette back in the day— unless it was another crazy Other One > Bobby McGee > Other One. Wow. I forget how sick 72 can be.

There were a few TOO> Bobby McGee> TOO from that Europe 72 run.  Can't remember them off hand, but I listened to the whole run in August and remember there being some cool segues in the second sets.

In celebration of Phish's Story of the Ghost 10 Year Anniversary album debut of 29Oct.1998, I'll be seeding best of live tracks begining with this ripping Ghost from Holmdel, NJ 15July1999:

Been listening to  :syf: Nov. 1972 this week and this interesting version of Playing from 12Nov. really caught my ear.  First, the mix is different in that Jerry is mixed to the right side w/ Weir on the left where typically just the opposite is common, at least in my listening experience.  Also the jamming is great, you can really hear both players crystal sharp.  So many good versions of Playing abound but this one, while maybe not as great as 18Nov. certainly deserves a listen ot two:

indeed, I finished uploading October and half of Dec. to the ipod for this week's listening.  I read where the 26Oct.72 Playing is a mind blower as well as the DS's from 18 and 28Oct.  But you're right, they were blowing minds, including mine 36 years later. :syf:

been listening to this sequence a few times today at work, very nice, surreal Dark Star(which is what this tune is all about) but what seperates the good versions is how much they glow and this one certainly does that and more, a must listen.  another interesting anamoly is the Eleven, during the Phil breakdown the jam suddenly fades out, you can hear Pig say something like, fade it out, perhaps a broken string or technical issue?  Either way great Dec. listening in this bone chilling weather.  Let it warm you up!

In honor of turning the New Year lets celebrate Hendrix style w/ 2 of my favorite Band of Gypsys tracks.  Out of the four sets played by the Gypsys on 31Dec.1969 - 1Jan.1970, generally I prefer the first night sets featuring these two awesome cuts.

The 31Dec.69 early show featured all new Hendrix, never heard originals such as this kick-ass delta influenced blues, Hear My Train A' Comin:

Out of the 4 versions of Machine Gun played over those shows, the version from the 31Dec.69 late show is my favorite, an amazing showcase of Jimi's then "new" sound w/ very distinct delta like signals:

I believe we can seed Jimi as long as its not officially released/licensed i.e. Live at the Fillmore East et al.  For ex. I got these two tracks off a SBD bootleg, probably from the same set as yours.

After mining a few sweet torrents at Cross Town, I came across a very good Hendrix show from 8May1970 Norman, OK.  Arguably the best version of Machine Gun recorded, this excellent outing features a Hey Baby influenced intro.
Many have expressed this show as being the very best Aud. recording from Jimi's 1970 Cry of Love tour featuring a fusion of Jimi's Experience w/ Mitch Mitchell on drums and Band of Gypsys bassist Billy Cox utimately replacing Noel Redding.

continuing the Hendrix train, here is an interesting Spanish Castle Magic Aud w/ a Third Stone From the Sun jam from 3May1969 Toronto, Ontario, hours after Jimi was busted passing through Canadian customs.  although the incident certainly was a drawback for Hendrix, it didn't diminish his performance that night as this somewhat short but riveting version reflects:

How about the B-Day edition of susep's corner?  An obvious selection to mark this momentous occasion is none other then this tit ripping version of You Enjoy Myself from 14March1993.  Sure the YEM from Albany May '93 often gets high regard but is way overrated imho, this one from Gunnison, CO. takes it big time.  Best of the year(93)?  Let your ears decide:

April showers brings May flowers so they say but the  :syf: brought many a flower in April as we'll celebrate here at susep's corner this month starting w/ this huge Cryptical Envelopment from 15April1970.  The  :syf: were playing w/ Miles Davis and his post Bitches Brew ensemble for a multi-night run at SF's Fillmore West that began on 9April.  No doubt the  :syf: were greatly inspired as this performance reflects particularly the hot jam between the brief drums segments.  Mickey and Billy are playing w/ tremendous energy as they lead the others into a scintillating improvisation.  This jam segment is one of those jams!

is kicking down  :syf: 1974 style.  Garcia's Wolf combined w/ The Wall melted minds everywhere.  Kicking it off are these two early May mini-tour gems:

By the time '74 rolled around Dark Star was played at a much lesser frequency then before but when they did play it like this superb 14May1974 version from Missoula, MT, it certainly made up for its absence. Jerry is manic in the last 4-5 minutes of this 26 min. masterwork.

I actually know Bear and have visited him where he now lives in Australia. He spends a lot of time with aboriginals and owns an art collective with them. They do a lot of work with Black Opals, which are solely mined by the aboriginals, as they were principally located on their territory in the north. If ever any of you (that I sort of know) are going to Australia and would like to pay him a visit shoot me a pm. He is super friendly, you wouldn't feel weird or feel like you are imposing, he is an old man now, completely unassuming, a great musician taboot and LOVES TO TELL TALES. The shit that went down would burn off both your little ears. And on top of all that he lives in an unbelievable place in the rain forest. It's magic, trust me. Worth the trip.

Amazing mix of smoking jazz covers and originals.  Trucks playing is so intense and fluid, I have yet to hear a DTB show that surpasses this Giant:

36 years ago the  :syf: threw down a monster Fall Tour that began 19Oct.1973 in Oklahoma City, OK.  2 days later the boys played Omaha featuring an early unique Playing opening set 2:

QuoteSoon after our move, we received an offer to play three days of a "Trips Festival," in Vancouver, British Columbia. It seemed like a good opportunity to bring our music to a new audience, since we'd been preaching to the choir, so to speak, for a while now. Since we couldn't afford to fly, the band took the train, leaving Oakland one morning and arriving the next day, while the gear drove up in a truck. While on the train, we took smoke breaks in the only place where we could have a little privacy: the open vestibule between the cars. At one point, we were standing out there entranced by the rhythm of the wheels clickety-clacking over the welds in the rails; Billy and I looked at each other and just knew – we simultaneously burst out, "We can play this!"

"This" later turned into "Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)," one of our simplest, yet farthest-reaching musical explorations. Based on the train rhythm, it had only one chord and was played at a blistering tempo; the music ranged from bluesy ("I went down ... to see the gypsy woman one day... tryin' ta find out – what's wrong – with me an' my baby") to mind-shattering feedback ("Just a touch ... of mojo band"), the lyrics delivered by Pigpen with all the spooky, snaky, insinuating delivery he could summon.

At the next moment, the train lurched, and Jerry, who was standing near the exit, lost his footing and started to fall! Outward! Quick as a mongoose, Bobby reached out and grabbed his shirt, pulling him back into the car just as another train roared past in the opposite direction at a closing speed of what seemed like two hundred miles per hour. Whew!

Love this mix, all the Simple representation, ESPECIALLY the 10/26. Unfortunately, still a fail though since Reba is not represented.
