as a major supporter of the Black Crowes, this will be a ongoing, updated thread about all things concerning the band.
as some of you know the Crowes reunited last year, with the majority of their most poweful lineup to embark on a very succesful year of touring, culminating with a New Years performance with Trey as a opener and guest.
amongst the Crowes community 2005 has been labeled as the "Year of the Crowes".
and this is very appropriate in my mind, especially considering the notable absence of another certain group.
well, anyway i would welcome any discussion concerning the band, as well as any other contributions to the thread in general.
Most recently the crowes did 4 US gigs before hitting up Europe.
The last of which was a night in ATL., their home base.
this show is getting great reviews and included a guest appearance by J. Herring.
It was posted today on etree, so i havent checked it out yet, but here's the link.

it was a classic paug exchange, i don't deny that. I guess I misinterpreted your previous posts. No biggie or offense taken. As for the obsessing, I only print out the DD stats daily and I got tatoo of Aug's DD on my knuckles, you can see it when I do pull ups on the bar in my room

2005 Crowes shows were among the best i've ever seen or heard, glad i got to the NYE show with a bunch of friends -- a complete blast!!! i just got word that the new DVD is unbelievable, i'll have to pick that up soon.
Just put up a podcast of the first ever European TBC show (1990/06/04). Yeah, I was there and became a fan instantly:

96 was a defnitive year for the crowes.
i forget how many, but they did an insane amount of shows that year. the fall tour project just finished up back in jan. and most of those shows are off the hinges.
unfortunately i missed my opportunity to see them last year.
last time i saw them was during the crowes-J.page shows...2000???
Cleech, have you checked out some of the last year's shows?
another show from there historic 97 european tour.
this show along with the 19th and 20th are MUST haves.(shows to follow-project 97 underway)
highly recommmended. 8-)

along with the next night, possibly two of the bands greatest performances of their career.
this one features more uncharted jams and segues than a normal BC show, and might be of interest to folks who usually avoid the crowes b/c they don't think they jam enough...
a 'must have', in my book.
get it!

well, i guess if i get too tired of waiting for the Phish fall tour announcement i can just hop on BC tour! :-D
2 NJ shows plus Jones Beach (though i'm just arriving back from Africa that nite), can't wait!!
so when to the rest of the tix go on sale? i see no information on their website, other than "check www.blackcrowes.com for pre-sale info".
Whoaaaaa. I saw that on Amorica.org! I'll go to one or two of those. I wonder when details of that Trey/70VP/Mike/Duo tour will be announced? The Duo is really good.
Not to get off topic. Hopefully the BC will release an album soon.
they haven't been playing many new songs though... which is a bit strange, they've been back together over a year now and you'd expect a whole slew of new tunes to have debuted by now, instead just a bunch of new covers they've put into rotation. they normally test shit out on the road before recording to an album, so i'd be surprised to see anything before this summer.
August: did you drink 5 million beers with the milw00keans? Or were they tame brewer fans.
I think a lot of people kinda dawg milwaukee, but I dunno, I enjoy living in the city and it seems like there is always fun shit going on and people love to party and have a good time. I mean doesnt everyone go to their local church festival to get hammered? :-D

i assume that was going to be the focus of the current acoustic tour, since rich and chris do all the writing. i would think there will be some new songs popping up soon.
not sure if there will be time to record an album before the summer tour, maybe after... unless they do it old school-'southern company and musical companion' style and bust it out in two weeks!

i'd like to hit multiple ones-- NYC area is the best set for that... they added a show after the jones beach one in AC
if not those, i might take a trip to VA and hit the VA beach show... or as a last resort i might hit REd rocks.........
i'm gonna be in Africa again, so missing a good portion of the tour. going to the Penn's Landing in Philly though, that's the smallest venue of the tour and should be totally kickass!

i had a f--in wild trip. i just got back off that damn train,,,, i'm pooped...
more later.
show was bangin, IMO.
they didnt even play most of my favs, but some of the versions were very hot.
RED ROCKS RULEs.
funny shit, i kept yellin for 'sick again', after they soundchecked it... no dice.

man... wish i woulda caught that LOSER encore the next night, --one of my fav dead songs, --hope there were tapers
i don't think they allowed taping... but i could be wrong. i thought i explicitly saw "no taping/no photography" as the conditions of the concert.
yeah, i think that was the deal...
SO, let's see. where to start:
SLim GOes to REd ROCKs.
weeell, this was quite the whirlwind trip for me. basically my first real show since about 2003 or so, and my first consecutive days off work since last NOv.
took the MIdnite train outta lincoln, got to denver ~8am, screwed around a bit, caught a cab out to my hotee in golden at the base of the front range... caught a cab to the venue ~2.
not much happenin in the lot-esp. early... so i got into the venue for the whole soundcheck--bonus! after some doodling, chris came out w/ a strat and they did someimprov jammin which was tight... it was really just me and ~10 other heads in the amp hootin and hollerin at the band. then they checked "ain't no mo cane" which was cool since i didnt even know that they had been playin it and i had just known the song from recently waychin the Festival express DVd... then they checked "sick again"- which BLew my mind, b/c i was hopin for one of the Zeppelin tunes, but didnt really expect one, since i think they havent played them since NYE.
so after f--in around in the lot all day, --ended up hangin w/ this one guy and gettin pretty tore down, etc, etc... gave him one of my extras- and he was down to give me a ride later... anyway, right after we got in the show i realize that i had accidently switched out my cig pack that i had my ID and CASh stuffed in , and left it in his truck...... fuck... well, i had the guys cell # and we were hangin, so i figure whatver... sorta sucked though, b/c i wanted to spend some$ in the show--get the instant live and a TShirt of course!!
anyway, after the robert the red nosed randolph band, the CROWES came out BANgin!
the mix was exceptional, and all the sweet spots had easy access... reserved seats were a joke, and the place was only 2/3 full. the 1st half of the show was my FAV part--
HOTee ILLNESS>>> Wiser time ... just sick, sick sick... loved every second of it... i even made my way down to the front row, marc side, which i never do... and at every quiet moment between songs i yelled for "sick Again"-- maybe it'll show up on the audiences!
for a one set show it was very long... i thought they were almost done after LA.
REmedy of course is the only song i could have done w/out... man that sh-- is sooo played out, i really wish they didnt do that catering to the suckers sh--... oh well,
at least the encore was SPACE CAPT!!! man that tune is the shiz!-- so much fun!
well, you know what they say about too much fun...
dude who was supposed to meet me after the show, had already bailed when i got to the lot... left me stranded, and stole my ID, and all my cash ~300 bones! :x
then my train was late... 5 hours. :frustrated:
but i made it. crazy fun. BLack Crowes rule!
who wants to hit up the Midwest CASINO TOUR in SEPT?!?!?!!!!

virtually the same setlist as Philly...
only 6 songs were the same
like 6 of the first 9 were the same... that's about as far as i got looking at the setlist, sorry. just finished my download, can't wait to hear!
decent source. the drums were a little loud for my liking, and i enjoy recordings from marc's side more usually... this one sounds about dead center, and i noticed at the show that dead center was "rich-heavy"... had to move about 20ft to the left to get in the ford zone... also i didnt see where the tapers were, but the sound was actually better about 30 rows
back, then it was up close.
guess there is another one up on cotapers.org -and i'll be lookin for others.
i'll also be gettn the instant live, not so instantly as a result of my afforementioned story... i'm a dork for t-shrts too, so i hope they end up sellin the "event" Tee online like they have for some of the other shows... it really sucked that i took all that cash and couldnt spend it!
Crowes owned me in milwaukee. My cavs hurt for 2 days from so much knucking in the front row all night long!!!
Coming back next month too!
honestly, they f--in exceded all my expectations, which were very high.
its hard to say it wasnt the best show i ever saw them do.
Their music right now is so ON.
nothing is contrived at all, its completely organic and just plain Blazin through and through.
Like i said before, they didnt even really play many of my "favs", and i still was completely mezmorized.
maybe it was the altitude, but damn, i can't wait to see them again in a month.
F'n Rock & Roll!

honestly... i think i use that word a lot on this thread... honestly, i think peeps are really missin out... and, oh well!! lots of folks don't realize... maybe owing to some pre-conception of the CRowes based on their first album from eaons ago... maybe because they saw one sad show back in the day... but really these guys embody plenty of what most self-respecting music appreciator digs.
i'm not too concerned though... but a couple years down the line, i think many heads will be looking back at this period of the band, and saying that this was the time that kicked major ass-- killer, heart felt performances, with little attention from the public... i mean is there a better feelin than bein at a show thats not even close to full, and knowin that the band on the stage is the best rock band in the world at that particular moment.
2 centes.
Go get it!

I know. Sux............
i guess though this means i saw the last show the crowes will ever do with Eddie on keys... glad i could be there.
should be an interesting month of shows seeing how the new guy fits in.
Eddie was a definite fan Fav.
Shame about Eddie.. I guess the sow where they booted him @ soundcheck last tour (LA? So.Cal. somewhere...) really was an indication that something was up...
Wish I could catch one of the shows near here but I'm booked up solid :(
anyone else hear the rumors that the bc were gonna sign up herring before panic snatched him???
I was curious if this was true.
from http://www.amorica.org/showthread.php?t=37287 :
THIS JUST IN
To the fans:
Yesterday, The Black Crowes were notified by Marc Ford's attorney that Marc was quitting The Black Crowes and that it was effective immediately.
The last show of The Black Crowes summer tour was on August 12, 2006.
The band has since been on a three week break.
On September 5, two days before the start of the fall tour which begins on
September 7, The Black Crowes attorney received a fax from Marc Ford's attorney immediately terminating his agreement with The Black Crowes.
The contract between The Black Crowes and Marc Ford stipulates that Marc must provide twelve (12) weeks notice if he wishes to terminate the agreement.
I am not going to comment on the timing of this notification or the way Marc has elected to handle his personal and business affairs with The Black Crowes, however I will state as a matter of fact, that this is not the first time that Marc Ford has breached his agreement with The Black Crowes.
Paul Stacey will be performing with The Black Crowes during the upcoming fall tour and Chris and Rich are currently in discussions with other guitarists.
Pete Angelus
Angelus Entertainment
amazing that rich & chris are getting along, yet 3 other band members have been fired or have quit over the last 18 months... go figure... :?
wow. this sux...
big time...
damn...
half the reason i go to see the crowes is eddie and marc...
i dunno if i even want to see the show i hav etix for this month now...
crazy...
well, maybe i did in fact catch the last real crowes show ever...
go figure...
this then can mean only one thing...
Phish will be back within the year!!!!!!
With Marc Ford out, I'm not interested in seeing them and glad I don't have tickets.
I'd see a Chris & Rich acoustic gig, perhaps because that is not an attempt to be the Black Crowes that I love but, for me, the best work that band has ever done has been with Marc on the stage.
Oh and it looks like Marc isn't planning on sitting around on his ass...
http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=500095
i'm still really bummed... :x
seriously, cancel the tour at least...
howthe fuck do you just play shows w/ guys sittin in that have been in the band 2 days and expect the shows to be worth a shit.
iirc, the 'new' guitar player was in Chris' NEM. So he'll know some of the material. I'd expect the first shows to be rough, laden with covers and jams and well... worth skipping. Such a shame after what you had told me about RedRocks.
well, RJ -- andy and jake just gave me the obligatory "cell call from the show"...
in other words, lots of static.
1st show of tour from browns isl., rich, VA.
Jealous Again was the song...
i'll probably DL a torrent if it pops up, and get crazy critical.
I was wondering if they were gonna hit the show. Hafta check in with them tomorrow and get the story.
So two sources are up already for last night's Crowes show...
I'm gonna grab the 4022 source. More rounded sound than the 21s (though they give excellent bass.)
I'll report back later on.
good thing about the show i'm going to later this month is that it is at a casino...
so if the show really sux, i can always go play hold 'em!!
Maybe you should leave your wallet in the car
glad i sold my extra tix for tonite's show last week!! got face for em. probably would not have been able to give them away today if i tried. still missed the show though, which is a bummer...
bt.etree being down, I haven't grabbed the Thursday show but, I pulled Saturday's show last night & have it queued up in f00bar for play later today.
Here's a comment from a taper that attended both of those shows:
QuoteThurs was lame, in a state fair, stick to the radio hits, shell of your former self kind of way. Sat night in Cville was great. far exceeded the (admittedly low) expectations
So I'm cautiously optimistic.
More after the playback...

George McConnell Named as Possible Replacement for Marc Ford in the Black Crowes 2006-09-12 12:40:21
The Black Crowes' saga continues to unfold at a rapid rate. A week after guitarist Marc Ford announced his immediate departure from the Black Crowes via fax, another recently ousted guitarist is reportedly vying for the vacant spot. As first reported by Jamtunes.com's Anthony Blazer, former Widespread Panic guitarist George McConnell has started talks with the Black Crowes' longtime management company, Angelus Entertainment. As previously reported by Relix.com, guitarist Paul Stacey, who has signed on to produce the Black Crowes' upcoming album, will tour with the group throughout the fall. The Black Crowes also recently parted ways with keyboardist Eddie Hawrysch, who had been with the band since 1991. Rob Clores, who has clocked in time with Rich Robinson and John Popper, quickly filled his place.
In July, McConnell left Widespread Panic mid-tour after an alleged argument with his bandmates. Widespread Panic had already been touring with a pair of auxiliary guitarists, producer John Keane and guitar technician Sam Holt. Jimmy Herring has signed on as McConnell's replacement and will perform his first gig with the group this coming Thursday at Radio City Music Hall. Oddly enough, Herring is a strong link between the Black Crowes and Widespread Panic, having performed with both groups numerous times over the past decade. McConnell's departure is discussed in the current issue of Relix, which features Widespread Panic on its cover.
Well I just got through listening to the 9/9 show (charlottesville) and it's pretty good. Considering how quick this guy had to get on board, I'm actually very impressed. If he doesn't have other plans (probably does) they should keep this guitar player.
I don't know much about George McConnell but, if he wasnt good enough for WSP, (who've bored me since the mid 90s) then I doubt he'll be good enough for me. :-P
going tonite- stir cove at harrahs casino.

alright.
well, lets see...
i really dont no how to describe this show, but i'll try.
i drove up from lincoln alone, and after grabbing my tickets from will call, realized quickly this was a "summer concert series" crowd... ended up having to stand next to the ticket stand --where there were plenty left for this 750person venue-- to give away my $40ticket
to some yuppie- if i tried to find a 'kid' to give it to, i wouldnt of gotten rid of it.
so, the opener, which i was still outside the gate trying to give away my ticket for most of, was "one mirror to many"- funny it was probably the one song they played that i wanted to see bad, and i missed half of it-- love that song... anyway, i walked straight up to the front left about 10 ft left of center right in front of the stacks>>damn! the left side of my head hurts today!! THen, sting me... OK! time to get a drink already-- fine! :lol:well, this is where the night took a turn, when i realized that even though we were at a f--ing casino--(thoughts of mixed drinks on the house) the alcohol selection for the night was cheap LITe beer in a can, bacardi RAZ, or... wine...well needless to say i ordered a tall plastic cup of whatver REDgrapeschwill they had and i was back to the crowd in the chilly 50 degree weather... THEn Hotel illness-- well this song i like, but having heard just heard it at red rocks and knowing this song could either mean a 'greatest hits' night OR an original set night, i started to scrutinize the new guitarist and keyman... well, the bottom line is that the keyboardist is fine and really even though i loved ED as long as this guy can play a hammond with minimal skill, the keys dont really matter in this band, and never did...
NOW Mr fords replacement on the other hand...well...ill get to more of that in a sec.
SUnflower was actually fairly hot... then the balld>wiser time was again a repeat from red rocks, and nowhere near as inspired--also completely lost on the LAME crowd in attendence in their lawn chairs-- except for the two super annying teenage girls that decided to move next to me and ask if i was an asshole, because they where apparently standing next to assholes before, and then proceeded to break into screaming the lyrics of wiser time... wow, i really dont like red wine i think... :|
anyway, it was now i realized that being in thefront for this show really was pointless, as there were about 1% true fans there anyway, and the energy was flat as hell... but "train to cry"(another repeat!) put me in dead show zone and i was off and dancin like a hippie kid from 15 yrs ago... this song was perfect to make all the crowd waiting for hard to handle go: " What the Fuck is thissh--??"
so in my mind the show sorta went in a good direction from there-playing wise-- then Polly... i'm not sure which song is polly and which song is 'share my blanket, but the one thats hard core funky was hot...i think thats polly... :,,, soull singing(repeat!!!) was excellent, better than red rocks actually... thornin my pride--predictable- and the perfect bathroom break song-- i told the guy in line with me that including the drum solo i was timing my break to make it through the line and i did!
"you got to hide your love away" -- great suprise, i didnt know they played it--really fun...definitely not a greatest hits show at this point...by your side> wow, a song that should have never been written, but not unbearable here... then the other kick down and the other song i wanted to see--sometimes salvation>black crowes hotness>though w/out marc it just isnt the same......remedy>>argh! i might never gop to a crowes show again unless theyt stop playing this f-ing song!! silver threads kickdown encore was great but the crowd just didnt get it, and on the way out i overhear a guy saying: " you know i pay the $ to come see them i expect to hear the songs i know"... this is the problem with the crowes...they play the fence on whether to go completely original and unique, or to cater to the "greatest hits" crowd... pretty soon they wont have either crowd if they dont go in one direction or another......
well i have to take abreak, but i'll post again in referenceto the new guitarist

the title song is a good one to try.
...just noticed that 96 is being seeded again @etree... they are almost through the fall already, but most recntly seeded is oct. i think with nov. coming up.
FALL 96 is more than likely their best tour ever, IMO, so if you are interested, i'd grab as much as possible of what is currently being seeded.

QuoteImitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but not when royalties are at stake.
The Black Crowes have filed a copyright-infringement suit against country star Gretchen Wilson, accusing the self-dubbed Redneck Woman of ripping off parts of their 1991 hit "Jealous Again" on her new single, "Work Hard, Play Harder."
It may only be rock 'n' roll, but it has the brothers Robinson mad enough to file suit not only against Wilson, but against Wilson's label, Sony BMG, the publishing company J Money Music and TNT, which is using Wilson's song in a promotion for the new season of Saving Grace.
Listen for yourself.

wow. that's REALLY bad.
it's in the same key, same phrasing and both melodies have around 14 syllables.
they even have the same groove despite the crowes having quarter notes vs the thieves having eighth notes on the high-hats.
i synced them up to play at the same time.
try it, it's kinda funny.
and wouldn't it be ironic if she was "jealous" of the black crowes "again" and that's why she stole it?

good call tet! i'm glad you all are giving TBC a chance. they are bringing their A game right now!
just saw them last night at the byham in pittsburgh --- wow did they kick ass. I still prefer Ford, but that didn't hinder the show at all. CK5 on lights was amazing, and they sounded incredible in a small theatre like that. Great fuckn show
feakin' love the crowes..first shows was the HORDE show in OOB ME the day after Jerry died..they killed it! Got tix to the 10/15 show in portland..small 1500 seat theater..can't wait!
needed a pure rock and roll fix, so i've been pulling out some Crowes shows the last week or so.
MOstly Europe 97 so far. Such a peak for the band its not even funny. such a shame they felll apart really right after this tour.
Found a nice vid of a show from that tour on the youtubez. check it out.

show was decent. B- , only about 200 people there to start....by the end there was only 100...don't know a lot of the black crowes catalog, and hadn't heard any of this album magpie salute put out, but it was good to be at a legit rock and roll show... not a lot of bands just playing straight rock anymore...also, it was a free tickets so...can't beat that...
