Cool! Let me know when you want to talk about 5/4/77 or 6/17/75...or anything else! Happy to chime in with some personal faves (since the GD Channel always negs me on a Head Set lol).
Where do you find the time RJ?
Looking forward to it though.

Finally made it through the first episode. Starts out so good with that Viola and the acoustic stuff is really nice too. Best Cold Jordan I've ever heard. But man, that Philly selection is just unreal. Had not heard it in eons. Listened to the second half of it last night on my drive home from King Gizzard and man did it hit the spot. So, so good. Great picks dude.
I have part of that Selland Arena show on vinyl as a Grateful Dead Hour. Sooo good.

The episode is designed to Celebrate rather than mourn Jerry. We don't need more sadness in this world right now.

New episode, new thread, new format??
Episode 7 is up today and this episode features my first guest, your friend and mine, Barnesy!
Andy came on the show to talk about September '72 and we had a great time digging into it. I think you'll hear it in the tapes.

Nice. I'll listen as I go steelhead fishing today!
Nice...
I know you've been at this since the spring, but I finally brokedown (see what I did there?) and gave a listen to ep 7 last night. Great selections, really dug the dark star > el paso segment, and great hearing you and Barnesy yukking it up. Guess I'll have to go back and listen to the first 6 episodes now! Also, shared it with about 7-8 other folks last night as well. Keep it up brother, and thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
It's been a lot of fun and this past episode most of all.
Glad to hear you're listening (now) and thanks for spreading the word!
I made it through the banter and China > Rider, kept me entertained through a long drive while boring my wife and kid to sleep - win/win
Didn't get to hear the recap after the first set of music, what show was the Greatest Story Ever Told from? Jerry's St. Stephen riff solo was wild, reminded me of something Trey would do...

Andy, I wanna echo your comment about Rosemary. One of the first tunes I was totally in love with and was also bummed when it faded out.

Haven't made it past the first 15 minutes of the cast but about to spin it now. That said, 9/28 is easily one of my fave all time shows and my first experience to '72 shows. Got it freshman year ('89) and fell in love right away. Have spent so much time with the show and it never gets old. The Greatest Story has to be a top 5 version if not top 3. Talk about a Phil lovers show. He owns that shit.

Also, I binge listened to these over the weekend. My favorites were episodes 3, 4, and 7. Really like the addition of Barnesy, you should consider making him a reg guest! Or having other folks from the paug that are uber knowledgeable about the dead on, like slim, matt, caravan, etc...

Over here it's about a 4-5 hours a week at least and usually do it in one swoop. It sucks. My kids wear like 3 outfits a day each. I wear the same thing for a week. But yeah, we have too many clothes. Probably do 2 loads a day at least. And my wife hates folding and I hate putting away, so we split it. Plus she is a shitty folder so it drives me nuts.

You got a bunch of fashionistas or some shit? My kids have to do their own folding. Just dump it on their bed. There were some grumblings, but I causally mentioned changing the W-Fii password and not telling the new one if they didn't get their shit together.

Cool...Thanks. I guess iTunes is about as easy as it gets, but through HFPod I started using Stitcher and it's been easy for me to have my faves all loaded up. I have been enjoying Deadcast too, that guy pulls some solid shows that are mostly new to me.

I got to talk to Jesse Jarnow about his books, being a Deadhead, and 1967 Grateful Dead. This interview ran long so it's split across eps 9 & 10 (which will be out in two weeks).

ETA: my vote goes for two more manageable episodes rather than a 4 hour big dog.
Part two is out tomorrow.
Also, the show is on Stitcher now.
Here it is, part two of my conversation with Jesse Jarnow and our exploration of 1967 Grateful Dead

I think this may have been my best intro (so far.)
I would like to say thank you again for your podcast work on both the brokedown podcast and the HFP. I just finished the first 10 episodes of this one and it is absolutely great. I wish we lived across town and could bullshit on such topics in real life. :syf: :phish:

So my father-in-law orders a Brokedown Podcast shirt and received the wrong size. He offered to return it and you guys said keep it and sent him the correct size.
He turns to my 17 year old and asks if he wants the one that is 3 sizes too small, "Yeah I do". Not saying he likes it, but my wife has to put it under other shirts in his drawer so he doesn't where it every day.

Jerry David DeCicca joins me to talk about his record, Burning Daylight on episode 27.

Got a chance to play the whole Mcnally episode last night. It's really good. Great interview and awesome music. Was not too familiar with that show. Sounded killer.
Thanks. That was a pretty easy one.
Really enjoyed your interview with Dennis McNally this moring at work.
Thanks

I would accept money to podcast with and about official releases.
Looking forward to hearing. I saw a bunch of JGB Warfield in 93 and also Shoreline. I think that's it. Wish I did east coast. The Buffalo and Hampton Shining Stars are things of beauty.
Very cool. My only two JGB shows where Worcester and Portland Fall 93. Good stuff.
my only JGB show was Richmond 93 and it was one of my favorite shows. Only time i got to see Jerry in my home town.
Only time Jerry played Richmond after the GD got banned following the 85 shows.
Dixie DOwn in Richmond was bliss.
Made it through the whole episode. Another killer job! Great tracks and good convo with Lenny, though as a taper, you'd think he would have a better mic
Nice song selections. Even my wife listened to the whole thing.
My only JGB show was 11/9/93 at CCCC. Looking forward to listening to this.

Another good one dude. I've really been enjoying these a lot. January '79 is great, but has some uneven spots so I appreciate you trimming the fat and distilling some goodness. Don't think I have ever heard the Springfield show. I have also been having some good luck with Relisten random picks. Got a hot January '78 yesterday and Soldier Field '91 today which has a good Shakedown among other things. Thanks!
Thanks, I'll check this one out at work tomorrow.

I liked the discussion of how complex the music is

btw when you were talking about the complexity of the music, did you get the chance to ask what time signature The Fan is? That's bugged me for a while

Ep 46 is all about DelFest 2019.
We've got live music from Billy Strings, Larry Keel, Yonder Mountain String Band, Railroad Earth, The Travelin' McCourys, and Del McCoury Band.
There's also a segment of the Osiris interview with Adam from YMSB and my full interview with Ronnie McCoury! Both talk about their discovery of Grateful Dead.
Lastly, I've included a short set from Old And in The Way.

Another oversized episode.
I spoke to four musicians: Andy McLeod, Jon Camp, Eli Winter, and Joseph Allred. Each is a talented player and composer in what might be called the American Primitive school. I think this episode could be fitting and even comforting today. Not that I'm gonna market it anywhere else for the rest of the day.
EP53 is a look at 9/20/70. The acoustic set is a beaut with Grisman & Nelson sitting in, Garcia playing some piano and beautiful vocals. This is because it's right on the heels of the American Beauty sessions.
There's also some killer playing in the electric set.

We listen to some of his music, three songs, beginning with a track from his about-to-be reissued album, Wonderue. and on a track from each of his 2019 releases, People and Ropes in Paradise. The latter is a cover of Mexicali Blues!
After that... Grateful Dead music.

Episode 60!
John Skehan for Railroad Earth is on the show. I've been listening to a lot of these guys in the past couple years and I love 'em. John talks about their new record, upcoming tour including shows with Peter Rowan in which they'll perform Old & In The Way(!) and Grateful Dead.
Then there's some music!

I love RRE. Thanks, RJ.
Looking forward to catching up on these.
This one's a double-shot.
First, Barry Sless, guitar/pedal steel wrangler for the David Nelson Band joins to talk about their new song, "Movin' Right Along". It's a band new Robert Hunter/David Nelson tune and it drops on all the digital platforms tomorrow. Or you could hear it today on my podcast.
THEN Jeffrey Alexander of Dire Wolves returns to talk about his new album, "I Just Wasn't Made For These Set Times". We check out a song from that and then get into some Grateful Dead.

New one up today:
On this episode I have an extended chat with guitarist Keller Williams about his long career as a solo artist and his many collaborations. We take it all the way back to his first guitar and up to this Summer’s much anticipated shows with the Keels, Grateful Grass, and solo, of course. After touching on Michael Hedges, Leo Kottke, Charlie Hunter, and John Fahey; we also manage to get some Grateful Dead into the conversation.

Keller ep was awesome, RJ. I know you've been a fan for a long time, but you came across mostly as knowledgeable (not fanboyish)... in a way that made the interview work really well, honestly. I feel like a most people interview Keller with 5-10% of the knowledge of his career that you bring to it and he appreciated your approach.

He sounds so good. It's funny, when I used to see the original JGB I always wished that Jerry would give him more rope to go out there. I knew he had much more to offer. And now, seeing him with Kadlecik, my wish has come true. He really is a monster on the B3. So so so so soulful and melodic. Master is the word I'm looking for.
New episode, extra long to help fill you time at home.
https://brokedownpodcast.blogspot.com/2020/03/double-drummer.html
Calling this episode Double Drummer because I talk with two great musicians. Ryan Jewell checks back in to discuss the new Mosses album, TV Sun. Then, Joe Westerlund (Megafaun) comes on to discuss his new record, Reveries In The Rift. Lots of talk, album clips and then, of course, Grateful Dead!
Enjoy!

Artist & designer, Darryl Norsen, the man behind some of my favorite recent album covers (Garcia Peoples, Chris Forsyth, Hiss Golden Messenger), the Dead Notes blog on Aquarium Drunkard, and some recent work for Mike Gordon & Phish is my guest and together we get into his work and some serious 1969 Grateful Dead.

Dan Brown (Royal Trux), Hans Chew (Endless Boogie, Jack Rose, Chris Forsyth), and Jake Morris (Steve Malkmus & The Jicks) play (respectively) bass, keys, & drums in One Eleven Heavy. I chat with them about their new live CD, Live At Jam Castle, improvising onstage, and Grateful Dead.

Here's a fresh one for ya:
Chris Funk plays guitar (and other stringed things) for The Decemberists. He's got a new solo album out called "The Painted Porch" (available here: https://chrisfunk.bandcamp.com) and he sat down (or stood up, I don't really know) to talk with me recently about his bands, his record, and being a Grateful Dead fan. Great guy.

The Barnsey one was dope. Great episode. It's been years since I revised Kezar or any of those so I went through the whole lot of them. Great stuff, killer period. The tracks you picked for the ep were bangers. Lol at BIO-Dittle.
Jumping over here RJ - Yeah, funk is a HUGE D&D fan and is very active in the local gaming scene (his studio is named Halfling Studio and he hosts gaming days there).
I listened to the Barnesy and Bleeker episodes over the last few days while doing some driving. Great stuff RJ!

You guys,
I've slept on a couple eps here so here's the big update:
EP 72 features an interview with Bay Area guitar picker Jim Nunally. Jim plays in David Grisman's Bluegrass Experience, has produced a bunch of great bluegrass & folk records over the years and along with Nell Robinson has released a new album of great folk music. He and I had a great chat and then I spin a solid mix inspired by fact that we just passed 25 years since The Grateful Dead played shows.
https://brokedownpodcast.blogspot.com/2020/07/jim-nunally.html
Ep73 celebrates & explores Brent Mydland's tenure with The Grateful Dead. As we come up on the 30th anniversary of Brent's final show & passing, my friend Justin Bruce told me that he was heading into a deep dive on the Brent years so I sent along some suggestions, he took notes and we made a thing. After our conversation, I built a mix on the same topic and we're left with 2 hours of Brent Grateful Dead. Great songs and jams ensue.

https://brokedownpodcast.blogspot.com/2020/07/celebrating-brent-mydland-with-justin.html
EP 74 features a great great group, Trummors.
Their new album, Dropout City, is out this month and we had a nice chat about it and my obsession with their previous album, Headlands.

Nick Mitchell Maiato, one of the guitarists and songwriters from One Eleven Heavy, found himself on lockdown at his home in Spain, thousands of miles from a canceled tour and studio dates. So he took the songs he'd written and made a record by himself. The album, Pino Carrasco, comes out on October 2. Nick and I talk all about that, being a gen x deadhead growing up in the UK, ands more. Plus new music from his One Eleven Heavy bandmate, James Toth and, of course, some Grateful Dead.
Dig it.

I'm really digging the results on the episode art lately. Thoughts?
Nice, I've got some catching up to do!
This thread has not been updated for at least 120 days.
Lame.
I've made a dozen episodes since the last post in here.
Posting today to tell you that I interviewed Jerry Grillo, journalist and author of a terrific new biography about the late, legendary, Col. Bruce Hampton. The book is called The Music And Mythocracy of Col. Bruce Hampton - A Basically True Biography and it is set to be released in April 1 by the University of Georgia Press. We talk about the book, dig into the man, the music, and the mystery that was the Colonel. After our chat you'll hear a mix of Hampton Grease Band, Aquarium Rescue Unit, and more.

For this episode I am proud to share my conversation with the one and only Donna Jean Godchaux McKay. Donna Jean has just released a terrific remix of a song that she's previously recorded with Jeff Mattson (Dark Star Orchestra, Zen Tricksters) under the name, Donna Jean and the Tricksters. The song is called "Shelter" and we discuss that, some Grateful Dead stuff and more. Then I spin the new remix and a bunch of other great music from Keith & Donna Band and the good old Grateful Dead.
