Title: Amazon Prime Video Recommendations
Post by: VDB on June 05, 2017, 12:13:30 PM
We have Amazon Prime for the shipping, but I rarely ever bother checking out their video options. So let's put our minds together.

I'm looking forward to starting up Long Strange Trip (https://www.amazon.com/Long-Strange-Trip/dp/B072HHSYTQ/), obvs.

And the other day, I watched Ray Harryhausen: Special Effects Titan (https://www.amazon.com/Ray-Harryhausen-Special-Effects-Titan/dp/B01N23GYB0), which is a pretty neat look at one of the real pioneers of stop-motion movie effects, and thus VFX in general.

I'll second this.

Also, Transparent is a great original of theirs.  And if you like gritty police procedurals, Bosch is pretty good, too.  It's certainly not The Wire, but it has a good pace and is entertaining.

Definitely this!!!!

And if you're into it The Tick has a new series on Prime. I believe only the pilot has aired so far though, the rest won't air until August.

Just finished Sneaky Pete which was solid.

Definitely a must for any Brian Cranston fan, although he has a more supporting role.

I'm about halfway through season one of The Expanse and I'm really digging it.  If you're in the mood for an action-packed, but smart and kinda complicated sci-fi series, look no further.  It reminds me of Battlestar in several ways, so if that's something you dug then jump on in.

Loved season one. Waiting for season two to cross over to Prime.

I think I posted this on the Netflix thread (didn't realize this one existed), but Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is fantastic - binged when it came out and didn't realize it was so short!!  The writing and acting are SO on-point, especially Rachel Brosnahan, who was always great in House of Cards but just blew it out of the water here.  A very well deserved Golden Globe for her and the show.  And this is Tony Shalhoub's best role ever

The previews look pretty good, so I'll have to keep it in mind.  I also thought she was great in HoC, and she was fantastic in the highly underrated Manhattan (I think Hulu has that one).

Jean-Claude Van Johnson is absolutely amazing.  I grew up loving the JCVD movies (no matter how bad they actually are), and this premise is too damn funny.  Six 30-minute episodes, so good.

Admittedly not a huge punk/thrash fan however a good friend that I've known since Kindergarten recommended Bad Brains - I Against I last weekend.  He also recommended a great video of the BB on youtube from 1987 that is excellent with a them doing a very chill cover of Day Tripper among other highlights that led me to this doc'.
Very good documentary that ultimately shows the lead singer, HR's struggles in life.  Very similar to the Jaco doc' except this one has a good, positive outcome.  Highly recommended.

So pumped for season 3!  It's odd (but I'm not complaining!) that it's already picked up for season 4.  That kind of thing doesn't happen often, though I imagine that since Amazon has so few shows to begin with, they're not really itching to get rid of any -- much less one of their better ones.  It just seems like a pretty huge commitment to make so far in advance.  Good news for us, though.

Considering that a tv season used to be 22-24 episodes, I think they're getting out easy here. Probably the producers sold them on an arc that requires both seasons.

Yeah, now that you mention it, I bet that's exactly what happened.  It's got to be hard on the showrunners to plan out a story like this when you have to take it 10 episodes at a time, never knowing if those 10 will be your last.

Finally started Man In The High Castle, it's really good.  We plowed through the first season in a week, and are now halfway through Season 2 already.  Perfect timing, with Season 3 coming in October!!  Would have hated to wait 2 years for this show...

Sneaky Pete is fun. Just binged half the second season with my Dad a few days ago. Good mix of intense moments and comedy as the main characters just hose people constantly.

Absentia, I've really enjoyed this show. At first I thought it was Nordic - I was even watching lips for voice over English lol - but, no. The male lead is a little weak, and the editing in some of the episodes is jarring (not in the good way) but the rest of the cast are good, and the female lead is very strong. Good writing (through the penultimate episode, I will finish in the next day or two). Psychological, procedural, suspenseful, excellent pacing.

After trying Jack Ryan, High Castle, and Bosch, all of which I ranged from indifferent (Bosch) to viscerally abhorred (High Castle), I was glad to find this show.

I have this service mainly for all the foreign language films they have, so series are just a bonus. Highly recommend Absentia.

Just to even further expand your horizons, I also think the TV Man in the High Castle is terrible. So badly written I could barely make it through the few episodes I did. But then, when it comes to filmed entertainment, I have opinions.

As for PKD, I've read every one of his very many novels. I love him. Man in the High Castle is one of his best.

Meanwhile, the three part British show A Very English Scandal is great. Hugh Grant is better than he's ever been, Ben Whishaw is fantastic, it's written by Russell Davies (the writer behind the the first 4 seasons of the modern Doctor Who, and much else in British television), and directed by Stephen Frears, a long time film director you might best know from The Grifters and High Fidelity.

Sorry to be the dude who takes an innocent thread in this direction but:  If I hated the torture porn politics and overall jingoism of 24, will I have the same issues with Jack Ryan?  I'm halfway interested because one of the LOST creators is a showrunner, but I'm worried it might be "that" kind of show.  Thoughts?

Finished Absentia, and the finale did not disappoint. There is something very Hitchcock about this series. Credit to the writers for being able to maintain the tension through all the episodes.

I do like PKD stories, and I can enjoy an alternate history fiction, Philip Roth did it well in The Plot Against America for instance, but as I see it High Castle has four main pillars/characters it tries to rise from, and three of them (the actors/characters of the Frank and Juliana (think that is her name) generation) are very weak. The female especially, but the two males as well. Way too torn and fraught with motivation, if they can't figure out why they want to do what their doing why should I care? They can't seem to finish a task without having to complete three other tasks, it's maddening (putting it simply). The only character I found myself wanting to learn more about was the high Nazi official in the American Reich. A bastard, quite possibly, but at least he has a clear path and some direction. The other three are too vague and their reasons for doing what they do (at least 6 episodes into the first season) seem whimsical and beggar belief. I'll leave High Castle for you all to enjoy, moving onto the next one..

Do You Want It - The Papa Grows Funk Documentary is now included with your Prime membership. It's really good and highly suggested viewing - also, when the credits are rolling, if you look closely, you'll see the name "Dave Anderson," as a thank you for my support of the indiegogo funding that got the movie made!
