I've avoided this thread thus far (as I do with anything involving the word "dubstep") but I must say...

I still fucking hate dubstep. To tell you the truth, I'm tired of all this laptop music. Play some fucking instruments.
I see where your coming from, but not everyone just sits there and turns knobs/mixes other people's music.

There are tons of people who compose and use pretty innovative ways to make music live. One of my favorites is daedelus, he uses samples from his computer and put through the monome. I've seen him live a few times its pretty sweet, cause there is a ton of improv. (like this video)

But there are a bunch that just need to make their own music.

I like bassnectar, I'd say only about 50% of what he plays is dubstep the rest is more just hip-hop/breaks stuff, which I love.
Yeah he started with that kind of stuff and moved towards dub in the past few years. Funny fact, he was in a metal band before he did the DJ thing :-D Thats why he's got like 4ft hair...

Really?  I went to college with Lorin and don't remember that.

It would probably be better if he bought a guitar and got a band. Laptops are for jacking off, not making music.

That's not impressive at all to me.  He's essentially just hitting buttons that have preprogrammed snippets on them.  Everything is in 4/4.  It's almost impossible to fuck that up.  I think its far more impressive with a group like Sound Tribe Sector 9 than some dude banging out "tunes" with electronic devices.

I'm not opposed to electronic music, I just think you can be way more creative with it than this dude.
do the aliens have any lsd? cos that might affect my decision.

Oh maybe it was some high school band then. But thats awesome!

And @sophist and phil. Idk I like a lot of electronic music, it probably takes up about 70% of the music on my computer. I do understand its not hard to make, but I just like the way it sounds, it has nothing to do with how hard it is to make for me. Its about what you want to hear and what sounds good to you.

How about this?  Still not actually creating "music" because no acoustic instruments are involved?

FWIW, I listen to a good bit of electronic music on occasion, I just don't find it as substantive as the other stuff I listen to (I'll take Little Feat over Pretty Lights any day of the week)

Yeah Pretty Lights is way overrated, just OK at best.

No that's Jel from the Anticon crew.

And yeah if you can't recognize the genius of someone like RDJ, who really is an extension of 20th Century classical, then I don't want to talk to you.

Sure, most popular electronic music these days is bad -- Pretty lights is garbage and so is bassnectar, imo.  And I've seen them both live.

But if you think that creating all electronic music is "easy" and "anyone can do it" you are plain wrong.  Use Radiohead (or Thom Yorke's solo work) for example, they have a TON of songs which are almost entirely electronic based.  That is not easy to do.  Thom and Nigel (Radiohead's Producer) are filled with musicianship.   I have heard that Thom Yorke's solo album, The Eraser, was made almost entirely using the program "Reason".  Now I've worked with that program for years and am still blown away that the finished product came primarily from that.  That is talent, imo.

Listen to almost any Aphex Twin album (especially RDJ as mentioned above) It's hard to deny the rhythmic and musical complexities going on throughout.

Phish makes me happy.  It's as simple as that.

Oh looks just like him :-D (from the still picture)

But Anticon always has good artists same with Ninja Tune, those are probably where most of my electronic artists come from haha. Love those two labels

I kind of enjoyed that. Although I found his sideburns distracting
