Carbon Leaf---Should I go see them?
« on: July 18, 2009, 07:27:20 pm »
A friend of mine is trying to talk me into going to see them tonight.  I have never seen them and just sampled thier tunes on thier myspace page.  I didn't really like what I heard.  Are they any good live?

ha. we actually know the singer. sort of. my friends neighbor and his folks are his godparents, local guys. my answer, no. nice guys, but, no, unless you're already there, and you will be back here bitching about it tomorrow, in which case, sorry i didn't reply sooner.
Did I mention at one point in my life I became so cynical that I ended up an optimist?  If you think everything's gonna suck, eventually nearly everything in life becomes a pleasant surprise.

Carbon Leaf was definately meh at best.  I had a good time though.  I love the Port City Music Hall and I met some cool people.  My friend is friends with the opening act, The Alternate Routes, which I enjoyed a lot.  Tim, the lead singer, bought a couple rounds of shots.  Plus the eye candy was pretty sweet all night too!

Worth seeing once so you know what its about.  Good musicians, but its cheesy pop-jam music.  Chicks dig it, the Sorostitues will be out in force...

We used to see these guys ALL THE TIME in college.  As has already been mentioned in this thread, we knew the singer quite well.  Back then, they played more of a variety of stuff, not just the pop-jam type.  And there's always this:

ALL THE TIME might be an understatement.  They have changed and matured over the years.  I have their first few albums but have lost my interest.  Any live music is always worth a check.  We all have different ears to some extent.  They are more poppy now more than ever.  Anytime I go now it is really more for supporting them as we do know they guys quite well and they are really nice guys.  They usually play a show around thanksgiving at the Norva each year.
Hoping for 3 nights of Hampton...

It's really weird to think about them playing the Norva, considering we used to see that at tiny, middle-of-nowhere bars in college.

SO much fun was had at those shows.  Did you go to the one at Charlie's on Main Street at HSC, where we all got thrown out of the bar for being wasted.

Oh yeah, power hour!  What a great college game that was.

College game?  I'm pretty sure that was played at the 30th birthday party I was at this weekend.

EDIT: I was not in attendance for said show, but one of my favorite Carbon Leaf memories was getting "Liquor Bill" to scream "Rift" in between songs one night our junior year.  Guess you had to be there....

Ahhhh, liquor bill.

I also got rolled from another Carbon Leaf show.  I was buying some underage girl drinks.  I too was under age.  Pretty crappy fake ID, but it lasted a long time.  Used it from ages 16-20.

Maybe that is why CL holds a special place in my heart.  Getting booted from 2 shows...pretty amazing if you ask me.

Carbon leaf just asked my band to open for them this saturday at the Jefferson theater here in Charlottesville. We're hammering out the details right now. I'm with the camp that CL is "meh" at best, but the uva females will be out in full force for sure...

Pretty sure it won't be good money, but the Jefferson theater will be a fun room to play in. Now I can say I've played at every venue in charlottesville except for JPJ arena  :-P

Yeah we're going to. It's gonna be pretty lame...opening slot at club shows like this is always dead, but whatever.

Yeah dude, no offense, but you'd be stupid not to.

1) It's a Beautiful Room
2) There will be a plethora of hotties
3) It's around St. Patties so it'll be more fun than usual.

:hereitisyousentimentalbastard There was really never a question of whether or not we were gonna do it, just sayin'.

But yeah it should be a good time. Def looking forward to playing in that room. it is indeed beautiful, has great sound, etc. Should be fun!
