The Iraq surge got W reelected. The Afghanistan surge is Obama's defense against the charge that he's a liberal wimp. Scary that both have more to do with American politics than international relations. IMO.

It's shit like that that makes me really uneasy about the "America, love it or leave it" mentality that I see all around me (not necessarily *here* but in daily life).  :-(

The Iraq surge happened during Ws second term. Had nothing to do with re-election.

That said, I definitely agree with your discomfort with the "love it or leave it" crowd - this country was founded on the right to disagree and protest.

the brand of conservatism you speak of though, is gone, at least in mainstream politics.

yep. here is the explicit GD policy:

"Goddamn, well I declare, have you seen the like?
Their walls are built of cannonballs, their motto is
Don't tread on me
. Come hear Uncle John's Band playing
To the tide, come with me, or go alone."

yea

I think Bobby was probably right when, at the end of the PSU concert for Obama, if more deadheads in FLA voted in 2000, this world would be a different place.
But, there were more than a few people upset at the survivors (and the ABB)  because of the Deadheads for Obama shows.

keep in mind, they did play a voter's choice benefit in 1994 during which Gloria Steinem spoke.

They've also said in interviews that since the backlash they received was widely mixed including some vehement negativity, they were not going to do any political activity as a band thereafter.

I haven't even finished reading this thread yet, but the idea that

And Killing in the Name is all about  :beerbang: :rawk: :rockout:

just makes me  :shakehead:

More in a bit.

Good catch. The basic point stands, though. Both wars have much more to do with U.S. electoral politics than with international security or *snicker* promoting democracy.

Dear Mrs. Reagan, I hope you're feeling well
Fighting drugs and abortion will keep you out of hell
Send in the troops, they'll shut the system down
Take away their leaders and replace them all with clowns
Out in the Rose Garden, time for a speech
Make up your face so it looks like a peach

Aw, Nancy dear, what shall I say?
Tell ole Ronnie it's all OK.

Oh Mrs Reagan, Mrs Reagan
Gun your husband down
You'll collect insurance
Make our country sound

Dear Mrs Reagan, gun your husband down,
Save us from this awful fate
George Bush will be our next president!
Dear Mr Reagan, your hair is really swell

Buy another missile and damn the poor to hell
Pump up our resources,
You'll make us strong abroad
Foreign country leaders

Know that you're a fraud
Oh Ron, you're such a patriot
We think that you're an idiot
Everybody's singing this time

Oh Mrs Reagan, Mrs Reagan, gun your husband down,
Don't this let injustice reign,
It's Ron you must uncrown
Oh Mrs Reagan, gun your husband down

Send him out to pasture
His brain cannot be found

Programmes of violence,
As entertainment,
Brings the disease into your room.
We know the germ,
Which is man-made in metal,
Is really a key to your own tomb.

Prevention is better than cure,
Bad apples affecting the pure,
You'll gather your senses I'm sure
Then agree to,

Melt the guns,
Melt the guns,
Melt the guns,
And never more to fire them.

Melt the guns,
Melt the guns,
Melt the guns,
And never more desire them.

Children will want them,
Mothers supply them,
As long as your killers are heroes.
And all the media
Will fiddle while Rome burns,
Acting like modern-time Neros.

Prevention is better than cure,
Bad apples affecting the pure,
You'll gather your senses I'm sure
Then agree to,

Melt the guns,
Melt the guns,
Melt the guns,
And never more to fire them.

Melt the guns,
Melt the guns,
Melt the guns,
And never more desire them.

I'm speaking to the Justice League of America.
The U S of A,
Hey you,
Yes you in particular!
When it comes to the judgement day and you're standing at the gates with your weaponry,
You dead go down on one knee,
Clasp your hands in prayer and start quoting me,
'Cos we say...
Our father we've managed to contain the epidemic in one place, now,
Let's hope they shoot themselves instead of others,
Help to civilize the race now.
We've trapped the cause of the plague,
In the land of the free and the home of the brave.
If we listen quietly we can hear them shooting from grave to grave.
You ought to,

Melt the guns,
Melt the guns,
Melt the guns,
And never more to fire them.

Melt the guns,
Melt the guns,
Melt the guns,
And never more desire them.

I don't listen to music for a political message, and with some songs (this being one of them), I don't care what the message is.

I 100% back this (surely un-popular) opinion.

I don't give a shit what Killing in the Name Of is about lyrically.  If that pisses off Rage (which it would) I could care less.  It's naive of them to even think that their audience is going to fully back or even understand their political messages.  Lyrics have always came SO secondary to me in music that they just have little importance to me.  They could have been singing about lollipops and butterflies, and if the music rocked just as hard, I would have enjoyed myself just as much....... yes, I just said that.

I'm at a Phish show, the place where I forget about EVERYTHING else going on in the world, and just enjoy myself for 3 straight hours.  No way am I letting politics slip into my head @ a Phish show......
Phish makes me happy.  It's as simple as that.

I agree.  I am there to forget about all the horrible shit going on in this world and to come together with people of all backgrounds and celebrate the beauty of music.

Personally I go to Phish shows to maximize my fossil fuel consumption, throw a bunch of trash on the ground, and chant USA! USA! USA! while doing white drugs produced in third world countries and muled in by illegal immigrants.

I do all of that to forget about the world's problems, really it's the only way.
