At the point when they built a physical representation of Roger Water's ego on the stage...

They lost me.

Are you talking about the wall, or the walking, talking ass?

Yes

i'm glad no egos got in the way of the beatles and they kept putting out all those great records in the 70's

Many bands could learn the lesson that it's better to quit before you suck.

I can agree with that, but I think The Wall is genius.

In my mind it is the most successful concept album of all time in terms of telling a coherent story and sustaining its themes and messages.

But, I don't think our fans do happily lap it up, I think they go online and talk about how it was a bad show.

I think it's more of a Rock Opera than a concept album.  I know I'm splitting hairs here, however I agree.

The Wall, regardless of how easily accessible and poppy it is, is still legitimately awesome.

true
on the other hand, there has never been a band in a bubble the way the Beatles were. When they were on tour, they were basically confined to their hotel room
(where they had plenty of female visitors)
everything they did and said was under a microscope - before youtube and the interwebs.
"toss away stuff you don't need in the end
but keep what's important, and know who's your friend"
"It's a 106 miles to Chicago. We got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses."
