He definitely saw himself in the same league with those contemporary composers... His films were high-brow artistic statements like Ligeti and Penderecki... And Strauss, etc. 
I've been coming to where I am from the get go
Find that I can groove with the beat when I let go

Another thing about Kubrick was that prior to directing, he was a professional photographer, so there are so many shots in his films that just look amazing.  So many scenes have such a unique look because they're so far from how a scene would typically be shot.

And I agree about The Shining soundtrack. I love Bartok. I gotta thank my oldest sister for that.

Forest Gump gave the world one good thing... The sarcastic use of the quote "I thought it was a lovely story... and you tell it so well."

Other than that, it has no redeeming qualities at all.
