It's with profound sadness we share the news of Dickie Betts passing. Dickie more than anyone had an impressionable impact in shaping and defining the genre of music that has come to be known as southern rock. The influence of his musicianship and songwriting skills are immeasurable, and his passing marks the end of an era. It's with the utmost respect and sadness that we share our condolences with his family and loved ones.

You haven't lived until you've had a robot shart in your ear and followed along in the live setlist thread while it happens.

Damn. RIP to one of the greats.

Damn

Dickie sure could shred. A true legend and an original.

Really a case of a man moving from second fiddle to one of the all-time greats.

Here's some Allmans with one guitar:

Amazing guitar player, great songwriter.

Many considered him the "2nd" guitar player but in the original lineup there actually were 2 equals. Listen to ABB Fillmore - Dickie's solos are just as good as Duane's imo. There there is Duane's response to a question during a radio interview ("I'm the famous one, he's the good one).
He saved the band after Duane's passing.

RIP

At least an Elizabeth Reed or Mountain Jam tease

Liz Reed jam would be classy. That's Dickey's best.
I've been coming to where I am from the get go
Find that I can groove with the beat when I let go
So put your worries on hold
Get up and groove with the rhythm in your soul

I mean, to have only one song in your catalog that good is more than most mortals can ask. To have that and Ramblin' Man and Blue Sky, etc...

Not a perfect human, but a hell of a player and songwriter.

I was going to preface the initial post with love him or hate him but most people know his checkered past.
Dude seemed like a grade A dick but he sure knew how to shred.

Well it's not like ratted out his road manager to the cops.

I'm not here to deny any truths or forgive any sins. Betts was an alcoholic and lived long enough that he probably got around to regretting some things that he did. It certainly cost him a lot.

I'm just here to remember what's worth celebrating... a shit ton of great music.

NOT defending Dicky, or anyone who has committed domestic violence.

Unfortunately, if we were to "boycott" all musicians who have done so the list of artists we listen to and "revere" would be a lot smaller. Many of our "heroes" were pretty unsavory characters.

I would like to think that attitudes have changed and there is a lot less of this going on, and people are being prosecuted in a timely manner. Hopefully that's true

rip dickey.

there was a lot of urban legend about Dickey in Richmond when i lived there.
Rumors of him living there under an assumed name when he was in trouble around 93 i think.
IDK.. maybe it was real.. i swear we chilled with him getting high once or twice.

anyway, i recently had a renewed appreciation for Dickey after the watkins glen anniversary stuff, and talking about how jerry influenced playing and that they really were the most comparable to each other at the time.
