I honestly think VM is somewhat mentally ill or has dementia, which deserves some empathy.

Clapton just seems like a pos though and I never really liked him.

But, I don't think our fans do happily lap it up, I think they go online and talk about how it was a bad show.

Fuck that guy.

this right here.
same goes for Costello.
What did noted deadcast guest and Europe '72 attendee Elvis Costello do wrong? Besides a bunch of music that never piqued my interest

Bingo!
Speaks to the timelessness and incredible beauty of the Grateful Dead's music

Dead and Co sucks but if it brings in beautiful women who might let me toss in the Boise 83 Franklins or the Hampton 81 Let it grow, I'm all for it.

Bingo!

Not much, well besides calling James Brown as a "jive-arsed n------" and Ray Charles as a "blind, ignorant n------.

Other than that, nothing really.

I hear you big time on the first part (though I never dug VM), but we've all given the Layla Jams a spin, no? Derek and the Dominos Live at the Fillmore?

Full disclosure about my perspective on Clapton...I grew up as an only child of a single mom and we listened to EC's greatest hits on tape on EVERY road trip, and we took a lot of them. While he may be a POS, his music moved me and provided a lot of early fuel in my love of music. I'm drunk...

Clapton is the fucking starter pack.

Then you can get into real innovators of the instrument and the music.

The live D&tD stuff is just fine but not really all that. I remember a guy I once knew & would jam with who had washed out of Berklee was a big Clapton fan. He would insist I listen to this live "Let It Rain" and it would bore me to tears. Then again, this dude's playing was also boring as hell. Really makes you think.

The studio Layla album only works because it has one of the best rhythm + keys section in rock of the day and a fellow named Duane on most of it.

I love how divisive Clapton is... at this point, I will only listen to Layla Revisited (Trey with TTB) when I'm in the mood for that music. I rarely listen to other Clapton, though I know the Layla Jams like I know the Bomb Factory Tweezer, and the D&tD Fillmore East recordings like the Allmans' Fillmore record. Also, Blind Faith is a killer record.

He is a d-bag for sure. Racist comments that he NEVER denied nor apologized for. His basic opinion being "I was high when I said those things. I wouldn't say them now, but I still believe them. I just wouldn't say them out loud."

Fuck that guy. But Fuck a lot of artists I fucking love. I've always heard Paul Simon is a prick. I still love him to death. Michael Jackson?? Phil Spector?? Led Zeppelin? Roman Polanski? Wendell Holmes? Vincent van Gogh? Do we not love these people just cuz we have to hate them for what they've done and said?

It's one thing to admire a work of a dead guy. Or listen to an old record from your shelf of a living guy.
It's another thing to buy a ticket to see a bigot live in concert.

I mean, I still have my Clapton records. Most of them were on the bubble during a recent culling.
But, given that I got them all used, he's not made a dime off me since I was a kid and didn't know what was up.

It's up to each of us to decide where the line is for the assholes that still look for our money.
For me, with Clapton, I won't hesitate to point out that very little of his work is exceptional without the immense talents of the people around him. He's the interchangeable one.

Like PG, if I want to hear those Layla tracks, I just put on the Trey and TTB album. It's so good. Susan crushes it.
