much like Cypress, people that did this run consider it to be one of the best runs EVER!
i am one of them.
the fact that it was announced only a few weeks before the actual shows, made it even more special.plus, they were playing Nassau Coliseum for the first time, which is about ten minutes from my house.
i do agree, however, that it is very spotty.
4-3-98 II is my favorite set of fish.until they come back and play something better, it always will be.the roses are free might be my favorite jam ever played by the band.
otherwise, i find highlights within all the other sets.

also, this is the tour that took Kuroda to the "next level".
if you were there, or have seen the DVD's, you know what i mean.

I think 4/3 set II was def the best set of the run.  I use to love 4/4 but that love is b/g to fade.  I also think the 4/5 show is a bit hyped.  Overall I rank em:
4/3
4/2
4/4
4/5
Can we talk about the Dead?  I'd love to talk about the fucking Grateful Dead, for once, can we please discuss the Grateful FUCKING Dead!?!?!?!

mattstick

I think I saw the best 3 of the 4, 4/3 thru 4/5.  I missed 4/2 because of work but never really got into "on tape".

I did however leave when Trey said "those of you who want to take off, take off".  I was tired and did'nt want any more funk.   :-)

August

true.
so many people have listed the tube from 4/2 as a "best of" version...  :?
the second set of 4-2 has some nice highlights, though.

True Dat!!!  It was actually a life saver for me last night as I was driving home from Philly.  I was sooooo tired, so I decided to bring the funk!!!!  Needless to say, it got me through the tough part of the 3 hour drive at midnight.

well i didn't get to see any of these shows, and i don't think i had even heard phish at that time. so i obviously can't comment on the experience of the run, but what i can say is that on tape 1998-04-03 is a must have.. the second set is one of my top 25 sets of phish.
Rebuilding...

VA $l!m

well... i have a lot to say about this run.

first of all though, i'll say that 4-3's 1st set is underated.
the mike's>old home>week4paug is freakin smokin.
& the REba has- for the last year or so- been my favorite Phish jam. i live for this reba.

all together, i have a real hard time not saying that 4-3 is my favorite show hands down on tape. though, oddly enough, it isnt definitively my favorite attended.

also, i'll say that 4-2 gets bashed too much.
the first set has flaws. but the second set is a masterpiece, IMO.
and it was the 4-2 show that i thought was the best of the four, right after the run, before i heard the tapes.

more later...
-I'm still walkin', so i'm sure that I can dance-

this roses are free is among my favorite phish jams of all time.
and that set is indeed one of the best ever.
i also love the twist from 4/2. and the wolfman's > sally is real purty, too.
and the stash jam is hot.
i like the first set of 4/5.
set II of 4/4 is awesome until the last 4 minutes of ghost, which 4 minutes suck a large amount of ass.
the birds > 2001 > brother is great stuff.

nice Aug, is it me or has the discussion scene waned a bit here?

I like the Tube, definitely appreciated it more after the SBD came out but that idea woud apply to many Tubes or any song for that matter.
The jam out of Stash is excellent, superlatives cannot describe, surely a career high-light.  Sneakin' has some nice funk, Twist is way off the charts> holy schnizzle.  Not that I'm a big fan but Sleeping Monkee is excellently placed.
I'm in agreement w/ Slim on set 1, dank Mike's, kick ass Reba, indeed a beauty.  Blows 27Nov.98 and many others clear out of the water.  I love the Mozambique/8Foot Flourescent jam in weekapaug.  Set 2 from 3April is must have shia.  I loved driving around Hollywood, FL. last winter and cranking Roses, chicks would be looking over at my car like wtf???
4/4 has some good spots as does 4/5>the YEM is unbelievably amazing, smoking the 28Nov.97 much heralded version.
In retrospect the LI shows were better overall but still an amazing weekend of the  :phish:

ehh.... i know i'm in the minority here, but i give the whole run an OVERRATED tag...

yes, its good, really good.... but its all waaaaaaaay too hyped...

and yes, i wasnt there, which may be part of it, but i saw everything that surrounded it (minus nye97), and there is plenty of it that i prefer.

personal favs from that run...
4/2 twist
4/4 2nd set

I guess I was looking for reasons or expansive ideas on why you think its overhyped?  :-D

Love all 4 shows. Wasn't there. Agree, fav is 4/3, especially 2nd set. I will differ in that I like the Cypress Roses better than this one (maybe I should post on the other thread).
Other highlights for me are Birds 4/2, Stash 4/2, Gin>Cities 4/5, Brother 4/4, Ghost>Lizards 4/4.
