Dark Star Orchestra was at The Palace last night...  and fuck damnin wow.  This show was monumental for a number of reasons.

06-27-84 Merriweather Post Pavilion, Columbia, Md. (Wed)
1: Jack Straw, FOTD, Rooster, Cumberland, Esau, Loser, Let It Grow
2: Help> Slipknot> Franklin's, Estimated> Eyes> Do It In The Road*> Drumz> Morning Dew> Throwing Stones> NFA
E: Brokedown
Filler: NEW POTATO CABOOSE > WILLIAM TELL BRIDGE > THE ELEVEN MOTHERFUCKER > RIPPLE

First off, they fucking just about sold out the Palace.  It was so odd.  I had 5th row, and i kept looking back over the audience just to take it all in.  Very strange to be attending the simultaneous beginning and end of an era.  The new era ushered in also brought with it the requisite.... annoyances.  Not 10 seconds into Jack Straw, someone threw a ton of glow rings from the balcony, thoroughly distracting me and a number of other people.  Everyone then began to try and start a glow war...    I let one land next to my foot, and ignored it.  I'm sorry, but I'm there to listen to the music, not partake in everyone else's.... whatever.  So after about a minute, some guy starts hitting my shoulder "Could you give me that beautiful pretty shining thing lying so lonely on the floor so we can make friends" or some weird shit like that.

Also, this was a big show because it brought a new-found appreciation for the slow FOTD and Little Red Rooster.  It was certainly an odd thing to see the strobes going during the 'jam' in FOTD....  i mean, they built it up pretty good, and Rob, John, and Rob all got solos (piano, lead, rythm), but it was just so... new, to experience a legit climax during that song.

The same thing happened during Rooster.  I dont foresee ever getting excited about the song, but they put a really nice jam into it, or...  well... "solo section".  All 3 got a solo again, and I remember Rob got this siiiiiiick groove going with his B3 that I wished to all fuck that they would take and run with...  he turned it into this jumpy, major-key funky awesome that realllllly got me excited, but alas, it was over in 8 bars.  Still, I enjoyed myself during the solos, and they brought it pretty hard.

The rest of the set was enjoyable, I couldn't remember the name to Esau, and I loved Cumberland.  That really threw me off, because I couldn't figure out what era they still did Cumberland in, post Donna.  Loser was really nice, too..  the set flowed very well, even with the typical first set slooooow ballad-y material.  I also gained a new-found admiration for Let It Grow.  I always liked the song, but getting it live makes it a whooole new beast.  You actually 'experience' the song and its structure, and that just gives a whole new dimension to your perception of it as a singular entity.  Everything was well played, and even though it was just about exactly an hour long, it wasn't dissatisfied.

The 2nd set was really good though.  I boogied the fuck out of that shit.  It was all great.  nothing groundbreaking, but just good fun-time boogey.  I couldn't fucking wait for Franklin's though once Slipknot started to end.  Estimated was actually kinda meh.  I donno...  yeah, it was cool... but it was too slow for me.  I wanted to groove.  Seeing it live brought the chorus out into a new perspective, as well as the middle jam.  The outro jam into Eyes was really not all that astounding, and it was just, i donno...  I wasn't in the mood for Estimated.  Not at all.  When Eyes came, ohhhh yeah thats where it was at.  Great playing, and then they dropped into Why Don't We Do It In The Road which was great.

For the first time, I went outside during Drums > Space.  I was wearing pants, and seriously dancing my ass off, and I was just toooo fucking hot to not go outside.  I could've taken or left Post-Space.  Morning Dew was great to get, but I didn't like it out of Space.  They toyed with The Other One, and i was excited for that, only to get the exact opposite in Morning Dew.  (crazy fast rager vs. slow ballad).

Brokedown was cool, and then they brought the fucking heat in the filler.  After Brokedown they said something about how Healy was manning the sound, and that they were gonna play some music inspired by him.  They brought Lisa out, and I couldn't put my finger on the name of the first song they did, but it was good, and then they busted into the William Tell bridge, and then fucking THE ELEVEN.  Apparently I was the only biiiiiiiiig Deadhead anywehre in my area, because NOBODY was bugging the way I was.  Nobody even seemed to care what was being played other than that they could dance to it, and that it was some sick music.

Ripple was cool, but i didn't dig on it the way i did The Eleven.

All around, a great show, and a fun time.  Lots of dancing space in the aisle allll the way to the right, against the wall, and we were right in front of the subs, which was siiiiick.

What was really weird, though, was how Healy had the sound.  When Rob Eaton would do his little rythm guitar solos during FOTD and Rooster, you could tell that he was panned HARD left.  and ONLY left.  He wasn't in the right speakers whatsoever.  It sounded good, but it was just...  odd.  and unexpected.  I think it would ahve sounded better had it been either louder, or spread to both sides of the spectrum.

if you haven't gone to see these guys yet, you're very stupid.

MMW at the fillmore.

great show. they were on fire. i see them every year, and it's been years since they seemed this into it.

the flow of the whole show was right on.

encore was a smoking crosstown traffic. the crowd was so pumped up that they came out for a second encore. billy martin said something like 'we're not used to the second encore thing.' and they played a mellow, groovy acoustic jazz number.

Finally got to see these guys again, too bad it was a terrible 5 hr drive in a snow storm, Awesome show, great song choice! Would have loved to hear some more of Peace Blaster, but I did talk to the percussionist sister and blazed her up and told her to tell him that they need to get their asses to Buffalo so that was cool. Highlights were the breathe in (love that song), 4 year puma, crysti insti > what is love? > pinanoir

They were supposed to play one more tune, but some fuckstick (stole this one from Rob from dso) hit Murph right in the face with a glow stick and he just droped his bass and left, was weak bc they were going to play one more.
I owe Aug $20

Saw Ryan Adams this past thursday at the Brixton Academy, London...which was a sweet venue.
I havent seen Ryan Adams since his Gold tour and I have to say I was incredibly impressed.
It was a great show...played some old stuff from heartbreaker and gold, which was the highlight for me but i dug the new stuff too, he also did wonderwall, which the crowd here loved, but it was a great version...better than the ones Ive heard him do before.
All and all, a great show.

But, I don't think our fans do happily lap it up, I think they go online and talk about how it was a bad show.

Buffalo Budd

Neil Young on Saturday night:
11/29/2008 (Sat) Metro Centre – Halifax, NS
Set 1:  Love and Only Love, Hey Hey My My, Everybody Knows this is Nowhere, Powderfinger, Spirit Road, Cortez the Killer, Cinnamon Girl, Oh Lonesome Me, Mother Earth, The Needle and the Damage Done, Unknown Legend, Heart Of Gold, Old Man, Get Back to the Country, Just Singing a Song, Sea Change, When Worlds Collide, Cowgirl in the Sand, Rockin' in the Free World
E:  A Day in the Life

With Wilco opening:
Set 1:  You Are My Face, War On War, Handshake Drugs, California Stars, Jesus Etc, Impossible Germany, Via Chicago, Hate It Here, Walken, Man Who Loves You

Had a full day/evening - went surfing during the day, then pounded back a few, hit the show, then late night casino.  Great times.  The show was great from start to finish although they wouldn't let people take their drinks to their seats so you had a lot of people pounding back beers in the hallway so it kind of defeats the purpose.  The sound was decent for a coliseum, Wilco was great, I got to my seat during Handshake Drugs, but caught the 1st 2 tunes while finishing my beer.  I hadn't heard 'I Hate it Here' and loved it.
Neil was a force of nature.  How does this guy at 63 still rock the house like that?  This was my 2nd time seeing him and he did not disappoint.  The Cortez had me speechless and was worth the $100 ticket price alone.  'Needle' through to 'Old Man'  was incredible and I was sitting beside an old fella who had seen him last time in 79.  He had brought his son to the show and it was great chatting him up asking for a comparison to his last experience.  He encored with with 'a Day in the Life' and I was pumped since this was my fav John Lennon tune (got to see McCartney do it this Summer as well).  He can still pull off some pretty decent guitar work for an old fella and if anyone has a chance to catch a show from this tour, I would definitely recommend it.  Who knows how much longer he can keep it up.
