Rob, the guitar player was literally the first person I ever jammed with when I first came to Berklee. I was blown away -- to say the least. We jammed all of my freshman year and had planned to start a band the following semester.... aaaaannnndd then I dropped out and moved to Portland! Doh! Bad timing!
The entire band is filled with talent, especially Rob and the keyboard player. See them. they are impressive.
They'll be at Bear Creek sometime in that gap between Charlotte and Charleston. I'd never heard of them before seeing them on the Bear Creek lineup, but after some youtubing I'll definitely be catching their set.
edit: here's a link to a recent SBD with nice sound (http://www.archive.org/details/dopapod2011-09-17.sdbflac)
Dopapod is fucking incredible.
Go see them.

yeah, goosepimp is playing as well. they are doing a monday night residency in October (including tonight). I can't handle monday night shows anymore though.
but saturday is goosepimp, kung fu, otis grove, seed, and a handful of others along with dopapod.
they're using 3 stages (no idea where they have the 3rd one) and I am hoping it runs smoothly with so many bands. could be disaesterous too.
Planning in making the show Saturday as well. Should be fun!
I missed the 2 ohio shows in october :(
I guess I'll have to wait.

you may. it's all good. :beers:
Just getting into these guys. Wow. I like it a lot from what I've heard.
They fucking raged richmond last night.
Rob put me on the guest list, which made me feel really cool. 8-)
Spoke to all the guys after they finished up last night. They're all really good dudes.
They also played forever. Close to 3 hours without stopping. They finished up around 2:45, super shitty venue in richmond but it's essentially a warehouse and a free-for-all... you can smoke inside and even if there is a curfew it's certainly not enforced.
And the security guards were gettin' down.

They are all so good at their instruments. Their tightness and cohesiveness was consistently blowing my mind. Dudes make it all look so easy.
Lots of young kids at the show last night. I think they all showed up for the opener (a band called Damn Right, who we all missed), but everybody was getting down to the pod.
Killer show.

Yeah I get to see Keller a lot less often and will probably stick with those plans.
RJ would probably say "you just don't understand", but I'd hit dopapod over Keller any day of the week.

I was taking power naps. I think that makes 2 straight shows that I have seen with undermind that I have fallen asleep at.
thanks for the setlist. I'm going to work on all 3 transfers today. I was troubleshooting the first minute or two of the mantras set as it was saving my settings of going from 2 channels to 4.
I didn't get the board feed for the big ol' dirty bucket set as they used a different board and I was ont he other sound but the AUD should sound fine as it was too crazy in there yet.
Was it after the Jager shots? Those were a bad day and made my Sunday morning pretty rough!

it was that perfect storm of being up since 5 (after being worn from work), switching to hard alcohol at one point (stupid promotions) and that jager shot definitely did not help matters.
Last hour I just rotated from the back of the floor and that bench.

I didn't get the board feed for the big ol' dirty bucket set as they used a different board and I was ont he other sound but the AUD should sound fine as it was too crazy in there yet.
How was the mantras set? Love those guys!
They were awesome! I really liked their set a lot. I talked to Justin, the keyboard player for awhile. He was very chill. I'm looking forward to seeing them again!

wanted to say how great Luke and the whole band are.
They offer a free tapers spot to every show. the of the Middle east show the spot was still open but someone grabbed it. I didn't take it because I bailed on a guest list spot for the rescheduled halloween show because it was moved to a sunday night. I just couldn't do it with work so I felt guilty. but at the Middle east, Luke saw me in line and walked me in ( :wtu:, another show that I didn't need my ticket. it's not just Jauntee shows )
they are always more than willing to give the SBD patch and are always looking to help the tapers.
with all the great matrices, just wanted to give the shout out to the effort these guys put into making it happen.

Somebody was taping the Richmond show (which ROCKED by the way). The band is super hospitable. The last two times they've been in town, Rob has put me and a +1 on the guest list.

This bar downtown called Murphy's. Yeah huge crowd, its also an irish bar so being St. Pattys day brought a lot of people out to this bar. It was packed out. They seemed to be having a great time.

some awesome covers! Murphys raged! :rawk: :rawk:
Never noticed that most of their shows are one set, even when they aren't opening for Mantras or Kung Fu. Every time they have played in Boone they have played two sets. Murphys doesnt usually have openers, thats probably why. They usually just give bands 10-2 and they can do whatever they want in that time.

Will catch them in Baltimore in August. They came to Boone like 3 times last year, very unexpected. But I enjoy seeing them.

Boombasnap was sick! Dopapod was a amazing. They both destroyed Port City Music Hall last night. Great crowd and high energy all night! The festivities culminated with redrum and some chick, with a great voice, doing an acoustic set in the back yard of somebody's house in the middle of nowhere Maine. Bvaz was in attendance and has all of the debauchery on tape. :-o He also got matrix pulls from both sets!
Dopapod just gets better and better!

Dazed n Confused encore was fun

yeah big turn out actually. sold out or pretty dang close. place was packed. opening band was a friend of mines group, so a lotta kids came out to show support for them and of course stayed around for dopapod. Will upload some pics when I get home. They seemed to be having a great time on stage.
They just announced some winter tour dates. Looks like a nice tour so far. I want to go back and count how many shows they played in 2012.
They are definitely on the verge of jumping a tier. I'm really happy for them.
One funny comment on FB in their tour dates post was someone asking if moe. was opening for them on 12/29.

Pretty happy that they're playing Richmond for NYE. That's cool. Too bad it's with shitadosio.
I'll be in a better place, anyway.
There is a pretty good chance I'll be at the 2/3 show in Detroit.

good times last night
I had a great time last night. It was my first time going to Stone Church, and I really liked it a lot. I had dinner with bvaz and hung out with a lot of friends at the venue for a couple of hours before the show. Then Dopapod raged hard. I'm hopping that they keep doing 2 set shows. Trapper Keeper, one of their newer songs, has really grown on me and I'm also a fan of the new song Psycho Nature.
More dates tba, but here is what they've got so far next year. These guys are fuckin' machines!

They love playing Boone. Might have to make a visit down there for their show at the saloon.
Their St. Pattys day show at Murphys was a shitshow.

They are playing Boston the previous weekend, but I may be up to jump on tour. :) Also they are playing in Northampton, the land that tapers love, on 4/20...

I'm a huge syracuse basketball fan and they are playing louisville (the #2 team in the country right now) on march 2nd in their 2nd to last home game ever in the big east. the game is at noon on the 2nd so we should be just thinking about stopping the rage fest at that time. I'll catch a game while you guys nap for a couple hours before heading to rochester.
I'm dead serious that IO am so in for this trip as this syracuse game is pretty much sealing the deal for me.
let's go orange. let's go orange.
:wtu:, plans are 75% done. we'll pick you up at 2 to go to albany. you'll bet back when we tell you it is ok to come back.

So is that Boston show just a myth, or is it for real? I don't see it on bvaz's list on the prior page, nor do I see it on the band website. And, perhaps most importantly, it's not listed on this site:

I'm not sure I would say I like the matrices better, but I do like them a lot. You gotta admit it's pretty cool of a band to release so many sbds for free though. Not many bands out there do that.

Not only is it awesome that they release them, it is just as awesome that they highly encourage grabbing a SBD feed to the tapers and encourage tapers to go to their shows.
We all as fans benefit from all that they do.
Multi-track vs. matrix is all personal preference. By download counts, my preference is clearly in the minority. But I'll always listen to the matrix. It's not to take away from what they post and clearly more people listen to their shows as none of their AUDs get 1k downloads in the first month of posting. everyone wins :music:

Had a great time at the Dopapod show last night. Those guys are good. The opening act, a band called Big Something from N.C., was surprisingly awesome as well.
Show didn't end until 1:30. I'm kind of dragging ass at work today...

I've been wanting to check out the big something. They were here recently but it was a Tuesday and that is just difficult for me most of the time.
Nice! Good to hear that you enjoyed yourself. I've really enjoyed what I've heard of Big Something and hope to catch them sometime for sure!

For all you MA people and MA wannabes, Dopapod and Big Ol' Dirty Bucket are playing in Salusbury on August 1st. With not many local Dopapod shows anymore, I assume it will sell out.
Got my ticket today.

I never made it. I was supposed to be off call for work by Friday but ended up being on call through the weekend and couldn't be out in the woods all weekend. Probably the most bummed I've been about missing a show/fest in a very long time. It represents basically everything I love about the music scene in the area. Small fest, generally good people there for the music and community, great music, well run.
really wanted to see Dopapod, Kung Fu, Aquenos, Dub Apocolypse, d'Elf, Akashic Record, Jauntee, Silent Trees (maybe eventually I'll see a Trees set), etc.
I'm going to go back now to forgetting that I had to miss it.

They're obviously doing something right. I don't get it; they're a great band for sure, but I just don't feel that deep primal connection to an essence of what their music is the way I do with the Dead, Phish, and fuck even you guys.
Kinda crazy they're the only band actually making the climb like that right now. Everyone else is pretty well-established in their respective tiers.

not sure they've caught on up here yet. I saw a little bit of their set at snoe.down. don't remember any impression. they unfortunately played opposite a moe. side project at a moe. festival in a different cabin so the crowd was just mostly skiiers having lunch.
they are up here soon but it is a weeknight show so I'll unlikely be able to go. but I hope to see them soon.
new years eve in worcester.
2 sets, plus consider the source (one of my new favorite bands), goosepimp orchestra, cosmic dustbunnies and lespecial.
moe. in albany is so easy and I always have the time of my life in albany for moe. shows.
I also want to do one more Phish new years at the garden. it's the custy thing to do but I do want that energy one more time.
worcester may win out this year though. that is going to be so much fun.
I'd go see Consider the Source over Phish, or moe.

but consider the source probably only gets an hour set so an hour set is not going to make my decision.
I know Dopapod opened for Papadosio last new years so I think this will be Dopapod's first big new years eve show (yeah, I consdier the Palladium a big show :-D) so I just think it is going to be awesome.

two nights of Dopapod/Kung Fu double headerliner this weekend!
at one of the best venues in denver, the 1 up. Its a barcade, so I am gonna get in some quality pinball, galaga, and tron time before the show.
so as a few of you might recall, I've done some writing/press for Dopapod over the past few years. I wrote an article that is used on the biography section of their website, and a snippet of one of my articles is used on Rob's page on the PRS website (he's got an endorsement deal with them.)
anyway, I basically straight up asked Rob if they would put me on the guest list for Aura music fest coming up here in a couple weeks. it's held at the same spot as Bear Creek, Wanee, etc. I've heard it's a really cool spot.
I haven't seen these guys since last April. Really stoked to hang out with them, possibly form a good connection with Relix (they may run the article I'm planning on writing in exchange for the guest list spot, which will be a review of the Dopapod show, or perhaps the festival itself), and really psyched to just get behind the scenes of a big fest and do some networking of my own.
McGrupp with an all-access laminate at a music festival = uh oh! :rawk:
So yeah, I'm really looking forward to that!
I also heard a certain JPhishman knows someone involved with the festival and will have an all access laminate as well. Trouble will be gotten into...
This band has passed through my radar quite a bit lately, so i've been digging a little deeper than the spotify selection. So far I'm really feeling this band. 7-8-2012 (the night after one of the :phish: SPAC shows?) and 3/6/10 (Harper's Ferry) are what i've been listening to.
...Damn.
I'm finally seeing a band that people on this board have heard of.

So much fun last night. Great show. Highlights for me were Give it a Name, Bubble Brain, and Ghostbusters -> Funk Jam. I hadn't seen them in almost a year so this was the first time seeing them with Scotty on drums and I was really impressed. They brought the funk moreso then I have seen them bring live thusfar. Enjoy tonight bvaz. I wish I could jump on terr.
Ghostbusters?? Sick.
That's a staple of my karaoke act.

Hey guys, can any of you give me some recs for where Dopapod is jamming?
I keep hearing that these guys improvise big sections now, and actually jam instead of just doing the solo trade-offs.
So if they have a song thats normally like 4-5 minutes that they extended to like 20, I want to hear this. I want to see what Dopapod can do without a net, because I was under the impression that they didn't do this much/at all.

Bluetooth
Bubble Brain
throwing on Bubble Brain now.
Can you give me an approximate timing/song structure for where the improv begins?
I feel like the thing with Dopapod is that they are still learning what they can and can't do with the jam segments. The jams are short, but there's a shit ton of ideas compacted within them. Other than that, their setlist energy is a blast, and that's what I like.
the cool thing about this band is that they write out their "jams" - to a certain extent.
it takes a lot of rehearsal and creativity to pull out new composed shit every show.
and when they do jam, they're tight enough to make it sound like a composed section. you see them play, and you don't know what's composed and what's improvised. that's what I like about dopapod.
I wish someone would hurry up and upload the Charleston show I just saw. They played a 20-odd-minute version of Vol. 3 #86 that got pretty far out there. At this point I don't know their songs well enough to know immediately when one version is differing from another, in the way that it's obvious to us when [insert Phish jam vehicle] has into type II or not.
IMO, Dopapod doesn't really jam. They seem to do more of what McGrupp stated... which just doesn't do it for me.
ETA:
You can check out a full improvised set here >>> http://dopapod.bandcamp.com/track/2013-06-21-set-ii-all-improvised (http://dopapod.bandcamp.com/track/2013-06-21-set-ii-all-improvised)
Some pretty cool music throughout, actually, I'm digging this more than I do their regular material.... but again.... it's just not really jamming to me... it's improvising/soloing over different grooves and Progressions. It seems to me that they had a few pre-concived themes before going into this set. Rob and Eli sure are incredible musicians though, there is no denying that. I think maybe it's the drums that are SO locked in most of the time, they provide as more of a backdrop for the other musicians rather than intermingling with them.
ETA: I will say, I'm digging this set more than just about any other Dopapod I've heard

yeah pretty much
This is how it goes for the actual composed songs of STS9 too. Which I love, not that mixed/sampled garbage they have been coming out with recently, even though old S9 did jam, the S9 that was around from 04-13 was more of a style of what grupp just pointed out.
There's def a tightness to it. But its not "improv" I guess.
def type 2 stuff here... so sick!

keep in mind, there is a new drummer that started in (?) October.
to be honest, I am still getting used to him. it was weird listening to this recent run of shows and then going back and listening to a show with Fro. it's different. after listening to so amny Fro shows, it takes getting used to scotty on drums.
trapper keeper at toads also had a real nice jam (as I just got lost in it while typing this).
they are not for everyone. honestly, I don't understand how people go crazy for an $80 phish show and don't enjoy a $15 dopapod show in a smaller setting. to each their own.
seeing NYE and give Luke some toys to play with, he can put on an amazing light show. they play a ton of shows so they are tight.
it is in a smaller venue but I love the energy at dopapod shows in the northeast.
I judge it by I always can't wait for my next dopapod show.
Awesome video, thanks um.
bvaz, do you know why they got a new drummer?
there were whole big long posts about it on FB when it happened. it was first announced as temporary and then final.
it was a decision made by all of them involved. there were no hurt feelings or anything. sometimes things just happen.
Dopapod is continuing to go tour crazy, Fro is still playing with elephant wrecking ball and recently just did some shows with Mom and Dad. I think he may have some other projects too.

Just turned off a Jauntee show to play this. I like it. But it doesn't feel like jamming to me. Unless they're just so good at JAMMING GROOVES like this. Its a different kind of jamming maybe, where they are conscious of how they are writing in the moment?
Its almost like they're COMPOSING in the moment versus JAMMING in the moment, if that makes sense?
This drum and bass groove is way too foundational to feel like its being jammed. This feels written. But maybe that's why it rules?
6:40 - 6:46 is the only real jamming I've heard so far in this track.
Its a great track, but that was the only time they've exited the groove and entered the amorphous jam world of GO HERE EVERYWHERE NOW THEN THIS.
man, Rob really has a fucking sweet tone though. Jeez.
once they hit the 21 min mark they finally jam. This is WEIRD. Yeahhh!!!!
I just don't get how everything needs to be a type II jam or else the band is garbage.
first, dopapod does jam. you may not like their jamming style and that is fine.
I am by no means trying to make a comparison of the level of music, but how many times do people leave Phish unhappy when they hear a standard YEM? do you hear a standard 20 minute YEM and get upset that it wasn't 43 minutes with type II jamming in it?
my last dopapod show
https://archive.org/details/dopapod2014-02-26.dpa4011-sbd.flac24
listen to Bats in the Cave and My Elephant vs. Your Elephant.
it's just half an hour of awesome music. I'll take that segment over a drawn out type II improv that feels more like searching than playing.
to each their own. I appreciate differing opinions. just needed to chime in.
I do like type II improv but not every show I see has to have long 40 minute jams. I see a lot of music. I've just come to aprpeciate the different types of sets that I see. I can have as much fun at a good funk set with no song over 9 minutes as I can at a 4 song hour and a half set. each experience is different, but both can be appreciated.
^ well said
I guess for me, the "searching" IS what gets me off. I love seeing a band attempting to find that next musical space... sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.... but it's kind of about the journey getting there, not necessarily the end result.
Plenty of awesome music out there that isn't "Type 2 jamming" of course. I'll check out that segment you posted Bvaz, thanks.

I give you that you are at least consistent in your viewpoint, even if I disagree. 8-)
3.0 shows for me are fun but it is not like their jamming takes me places anymore and frankly the searching can be painful at times.. I accept 3.0 as fun and I'll continue to go, but I also find a ton of other shows fun too.
It's senseless of me to rave about other music on a predominantly Phish message board, but I enjoy reading other people's opinions.
In another couple years, I'll be a jaded Dopapod fan too and I'll be fluffing skrillex as I will be front row with gumbo.

Give the Improvised Set a spin.... it takes about 20 minutes for them to FINALLY let go and make some weiiiiiird music and actually get to the place where the music plays the band.
See, this is what it comes down to. With Dopapod, Umphreys, etc.... those guys can't let go enough. They think too much. Their thinking results in some fucking COOL-ASS music. But its thought music. It isn't let-go music. I want let-go music. That's why I love the Jauntee. It just so happens that they play the kind of music I love hearing, where you are searching.... you have let your ego go, and you're just.... going. There is no thought. The moment you start to think, its over. You've killed it.
Its almost meditative.... you've got to withdraw your ego and your decision-making process and let the outside information dictate your moves. You become unconscious, in a way. You become reactionary, instead of dictative.
The Dopapod jams mostly are dictative.... they're thinking. Sure, they're making it up and they're jamming.... but they haven't let go to the point where maybe the music will suck. Maybe it will be just TOO weird. But to get the bigger rewards, you have to take that risk.
Some bands just can't take that risk. Some people just can't let go enough to not care about making utter fools of themselves in front of a crowd of paying people. But for the bands that DO take that risk, the musical payoffs are FAR greater imo. Not that Dopamgee makes bad music. They don't. Its great music.
But the music I think is superior is the music made by fearless individuals. It takes a fearlessness to go onstage and possibly make a fool of yourselves.
Someone sure as hell is thinking too much. I agree with you there.

nice. how was the show?
It was, in a word, spectacular. Maybe my state of mind had something to do with it but goddamn. They're so good.
I'm too much of a newb to know all their songs but here's the setlist courtesy of their sound/light guy's Twitter feed (https://twitter.com/Luke_Stratton):
Quote
Dopapod
2014/04/19 - New Earth Music Hall - Athens, GA
Set I
Hey Zeus!, Present Ghosts, Vol. 38 #86, Eight Years Ended, My Elephant vs. Your Elephant, Nerds, Bubble Brain
Set II
Donkey Kong Country Theme, Like a Ball, STADA -> PLSS -> STADA, Upside of Down > Picture in Picture, Weird Charlie
E
Bats in the Cave
Lots of weird stuff going on. At one point in the second set they got into this reverberating reggae thing with audience call and response. Maybe that was a proper song or maybe it was off the cuff, I dunno. Near the end there was a full-on "woo" segment with the audience. This could either have been very cool if it arose organically and the fans there were not referencing the Phish woos, or very uncool if the woos were merely infiltrating another band's scene. Either way, it amused me because my friends and I were just talking about the Tahoe Tweezer and the woo phenomenon earlier that day.
I have a feeling that Dopapod, or at least their guitarist Rob, listens to a lot of Phish. I'm no expert but I feel like I hear Trey's influence in Rob's playing. I also heard a couple Phish teases at the Charleston show earlier this year. Then there was Saturday's post-show music, appropriate for the early hours of 4/20, which was the Wailers' version of Makisupa Policeman.
Setlusts look great. Wish more tapers and/or more sources showed up for their shows.
That's definitely a setlust I'd like to hear.

Back when we jammed together, we would constantly play Phish songs.

Their show this weekend at Catskill Chill was the first time I ever REALLY enjoyed a Dopapod show. I've always appreciated their musicianship but just couldn't "get into" their sound in the past.
Anyways, their new drummer made all the difference for me. Fro was a super solid drummer but the new guy really allows them to Jam. It felt like a different band then I had seen before. They were definitely full-band-jamming which you rarely see these days.

I'm diggin' that Picture in Picture studio track.
The production quality seems much better than any of their previous studio albums, no?
The differences for me are subtle. I can't quite place my finger on what this band has evolved in to. Electro-funk? I think adding lyrics to their songs in another step in the right direction. They need a lot of work though

I just like how well their news songs work in a show. they aren't gong to strike it rich by selling CDs imo. recently someone said to me that if I saw them 2 ngihts in a row in Providence, I'd see the same show both nights. I pretty much just laughed and found the first opportunity to get out of that conversation.
a lot of the old favorites and what were staples are now being sprinkled into setlists and are becoming treats.

^ enjoyed that, thanks.
rough night for them last night.... A speaker caught fire mid first set at their NYC CD release party at the Gramercy. Place was evacuated and show ended.

Since no one was hurt that's actually pretty awesome. Imagine jamming so hard the speakers catch fire! That's the stuff of legends.
Watching Dopapod videos on the TV now and pretty pumped about 12/12 in Charlotte (and 12/13 in Raleigh maybe). Still bummed about the conflict keeping me away from Athens and Atlanta the prior weekend.

Stellar time last night. Second set went far afield. The music and I had several moments together there.
I don't want to be too hyperbolic but last night's show was unlike anything I have ever heard or witnessed. We can safely assume that had as much to do with internal as external factors, and I can't definitively comment on anyone else's experience, but perception being what it is that hardly matters.
Nevertheless, I think I can make some fairly objective observations and they include:
- The show raged with an unrelenting ferocity that band and audience alike were aware of and acknowledged.
- Tauk, the opening act, is a highly skilled foursome with a badass drummer who sat in twice with Dopapod and more or less brought the house down.
- I am always being reminded that these guys are better improvisers than I realize.
Was it all good news? No:
- As Dopapod's audience has grown they have picked up a few seedy characters along the way, it appears. Not the nitrous kind but the post-show scene is healthily stocked with spunions and the temporarily insane.
- People at the show were fuuuuuucked up. This is not alcohol music but drug music. But that does not mean there wasn't heavy drinking going on too. I hope that everyone got home safely. I myself relied on Uber for the roundtrip and it was the best $20 I could have possibly spent.
- My brain and ego passed through a wood chipper and had to be meticulously reassembled on the other side. I think I have all the pieces in the right slots but I can't be certain.

I'll go on record right away saying they won't repeat a song in the 3 nights.
the 2 providence shows I saw in october were two 2 set shows. I don't know if these will be just longer 1 set shows.
I also think they do a good job of adding material so I'd expect some new songs by April anyway.
with the festivals they are being added to so far for this summer, they are definitely looking to hit 2015 with a vengeance.

apparently they have changed a lot since the last time I saw them. Last time I saw them their style was more like an STS9 type (not really musically but song structure). Where it was not much jamming, maybe one song jammed out a little. They play the whole song through 8-10 min. Song has diff segments from untz to rock to heavenly sounds. They did do a cover over that alanis morissette song and a dazed n confused encore which was sick.
I have heard they changed a lot since then.
Thats awesome they got enough material now to fill a 3 night run. Also saw they are on bonnaroo line up which is sick and good exposure. Seems like they are finding their niche
I mean, they are not going to drop a 25 minute bubblebrain or anything so that hasn't changed.
I don't know how many songs they have now, but they do keep expanding their catalogue.
they have a number of songs that get in the 10+ minute mark. I'd say the longest song in a set probably usually tops out at 15 or 16 minutes.
it hit me during their new years set how "familiar" they have become to me. we discuss music on here a lot and I have been discussing music for a long time in various areas. I listen to more Dopapod than most other bands right now and I just like their sound. the more I discuss music, the more I realize how important the "familiar" sound is to what you enjoy. it's why I dont post as much on here anymore. no one really listens to the music I spend most of my time listening to, but I am still seeing and listening to as much music as I ever have.
Ive seen these guys 3 times now and I've really come around to like them after not digging the first set I saw. With the trajectory they're on I bet they'll be on Jamcruise in the next year or two. I'll be putting them on my survey for next year. Along with Tauk, who I absolutely love.

They're definitely more satisfying, to me, than something more one-dimensionally untzy like Bisco. Like Erik said, they have different sounds. I find some of their material to be incredibly hard (as in, hard-rocking). I have read that Chuck, the bassist, didn't come up listening to jam bands but was more into stuff like Primus. You can tell that there's a metal influence on some of their stuff. Then you have the more proggy material, and the more bouncy electro-funk material. I like it all. They don't really do ballads or anything light, which I also like about them. I will also say that their songwriting is only getting better (not that it was once bad), and if you ask me, pretty much the entirety of their latest album is very impressive.

Nice bud! I psyched they are coming to Austin. Gonna see if I can swing it. I might be out of town that day though
I listened to the 2/25/15 show today. Really, really excellent improv throughout. As a general tendency, they don't open up quite as much as Phish, but they definitely go type II, if we want to use that common parlance.
Also, the 12/30/15 New James is spectacular.
19 FABA last night too is well worth the listen and has type 2 going on!

I am happy they are finding a way to make most shows available now.
I hate any type of comparison but remember you are comparing them to what Phish was doing 10 years in. plus, comparing anyone to Phish makes the other band lose anyway.
also, I like that they just keep adding new songs. my first impression is the newer songs sound too much like other songs but we'll see when I start to hear them more.
I wasn't meaning it to be a knock against Dopapod; I think it's largely born out of what the bands' respective sounds are like. I personally am loving how they jam these days, and yet I believe we may just be seeing the tip of the spear here.
Really psyched for next week's show in Greenville.
I know you're a fan and knew you weren't knocking them.
sometimes I just like to remind myself how early in their career they are.
my biggest worry is that they will get burned out from touring so much, but it becomes less of a worry each year. they seem so driven.
hope you get a great show next week. I've already been thinking about their 3 night run in boston in april which is unusual because I don't usually look that far ahead to shows.
Of course, selfishly I'm happy with the heavy touring since it means more chances for me to see them at a time when I know I can catch a show and they'll kill it since that's what they do every night.
I continue to notice on the AUDs that the crowds sound very chatty. Aren't they there to see the band? I don't notice this so much in person, although I try to hang closer up front where the "serious fans" are.
edit: The crowds were chatty, not the crows. I can't comment on the crows.

Seems like a problem at a lot of shows I have been to lately. I seem to find my way to less chatty areas as well. Unfortunately tapers are stationary and normally far away from the stage, and that is where the damn yappers like to be.

I don't want to hijack away from the great topic but tapers are generally "forced" to be in a specific spot.
yes, people chatter. the people that aren't chattering are on their cell phones. that doesn't show up in the tapes but it is still annoying in person.
it wasn't a dopapod show but the chattering at a show tonight was so annoying I literally almost had to get up and say something to some people in the first set. luckily someone else did. I was pretty comfortable in my seat.
fewer people love music nowadays. it is very sad to me.

I'm pumped that you're pumped.
Well the Dopapod show night was a success... I ran home after work, changed, and was at happy hour by 5 back downtown then never stopped until about 2 AM... Squeezed an OU sweet 16 game and Dopapod show in there too.
Those guys bring it. The venue I saw them at was a small outdoor venue with a half-way decent sound system. I ended up getting ahold of some hash pen around 1 AM that just floored me. I smoke about 1 or 2 times a quarter now due to drug tests with work so it did the trick. All in all great night.
Headed to Toronto on the 12th and if I have enough time, plan to catch them at Lee's.
Looking forward to it.
Bvaz, tell us about this Sinclair run. I see you taped last night -- listening now, thanks! 55 min Echoes? :-o
I only did Friday and Saturday, which were fuckin sick, but missed the Echoes > Jam 2nd set last night. :frustrated: Never miss a Sunday show rule in full effect I guess. Friday's 2nd set was the highlight of the 2 shows for me. Lots of type 2 jamming and going from one song to another and back again. What en epic weekend for the band and fans!!! I had a ton of fun both nights and thanks again bvaz for your hospitality. The AUDs from Friday and Saturday are up on archive too. Well worth listening to. I loved Saturday night, the only night I got. They are damn good.
Apparently, Friday night's debauchery led to some draconian security protocols at the venue Saturday night. What a frigging nightmare that was. They did their best House of Blues impression. Didn't manage to harsh on the paug crew vibe, though.
UM-I haven't had a chance to walk by your spot to see if that roach is still living there. 8-)
just a great 3 night run. my immediate reaction to Friday's set 2 was that it was the best set I have seen them do. Luke also posted on twitter that it was up there as a top show. I love sets that go in and out of songs like that.
Saturday was very good as well. the shows are just so tight right now as they are playing so often. I think this weekend ended 5 straight nights.
the Echoes last night was awesome. definitely was unexpected. they ended set 1 later than I thought they would so I was curious how set 2 was going to go with a midnight curfew. they clearly didn't disappoint. after 2 sold out shows and a bit smaller crowd for sunday, it felt like a reward for those lucky enough to be able to go last night.
security did suck the 2nd 2 nights. with no pat at all Friday, clearly I think people were out of control. I saw several others getting kicked out last night but the ones I saw couldn't even walk on their own.
for someone who goes in at doors and doesn't leave at setbreak, the security really didn't impact me but definitely sucks for most people.
Please do elaborate on the Friday debauchery.

I heard that they tightened security because of having to throw out a lot of underage kids and finding lots of nips all over the place after the show on Friday.... Having said that, I did not feel old this weekend. There was a solid mix of younger and older people I thought.
The ambient part of that Echoes jam was amazing. Definitely the trippiest thing I've ever seen Dopapod do.

They've been consistently growing on me for the past few years. I still can't get into the dancey/Synthy stuff, just too predictable for my taste... but when they are really jamming out together and getting deep improvisationally, they can make some fantastic stuff. Rob and Eli are so locked in and often completing each-others musical sentences.

They do have good sympathy as players and I agree, sometimes they veer into territory that doesn't do it for me and other times they're hitting on some great stuff.
This second set from 4/17 is definitely one of the coolest sets I think they have played. :rawk:

Do yourselves a favor and check out the Nuggy Jawson from 6/27, which they just released (http://dopapod.bandcamp.com/album/2015-06-27-electric-forest-rothbury-mi-2). I think these guys are jamming so well these days.
Just scored my saturday SCI ticket on the re re today and dopapod is opening for them.
psyched to see them at red rocks! Saw them maybe about a year or so ago so this will be a refreshing experience
That I am the slime was nice.
Saw them last night and has a great time, well except for the chick I met at setbreak who tried to front like she was from Portland when she really was from LA, we didn't get along too well.
I didn't realize until last night that the keyboard guy drives a lot of the jams, which was a refreshing change from most jambands. I didn't really dig the vocals but that was only a small percentage of the show anyway. Overall they mesh really well and can see their potential to get even better, I hope they come back soon.
Yeah, Eli is a virtuoso and is responsible for much of their sound. This allows Rob to do a lot of interesting rhythm work, and then when the time comes and he steps forward, the jams can really explode. Glad you got to check em out Hicks.
i am getting stoked to see their set opening for SCI at Red Rocks on Saturday.... I am buying the webcast to watch them, but will probably watch some of SCI too lol.
Not trying to be a wet blanket, I definitely like(d) Dopapod a lot, but last time I saw them the Southern Belles (local/RVA band) opened for them and blew them away and I ended up leaving halfway through Dopapod's set because, well, they got shown up by the opener. Similar to how a few years ago I "grew out of"/started being too much of d-bag for liking Lotus...I used to really like them but now they bug me. I'd like to get into them again, any suggestions for videos/recordings that might restore that?

Damn! Entire tour with Nth Power opening? That's crazy...
Looks like a lot of bigger rooms/theaters too.
Damn no Nth power at Denver show, moon hooch isnt bad though
Will have to do frisco cuz dopapod in that room would be wild.
Cant believe these guys are going from sold out RR with cheese to like 200-300 person room in frisco ha.
Cool, thanks for sharing.
No thanks for Charlotte being on a Wednesday. Hmmm..

I'm listening to a random show (2/22/13 in Boston) and Eli gives a shoutout to The Jauntee, who must have opened. Yay Scotty!
Also, I'll be seeing Dopapod this weekend in Charleston and Atlanta. Should be rad.
Fantastic run of shows this past weekend. Atlanta was an especially exceptional time -- honestly one the most fun times I've ever had at a concert. If you have the chance to see a show at Terminal West, do so. Great venue, and the crowd was awesome as well. Then we went to Clermont Lounge afterwards. :wtu: :sbw:

Ha! Ramsay has told me about that lady!
I didn't see her, nor the one who punches her funbag into your face.

The jauntee opening in Denver !!! So psyched def hitting that up
I've been listening to a lot of Dopapod lately. Some of their jams is very UM-sounding in spots. I love that you can "name your price" for most of their shows. Knocked out a handful of shows in the last few weeks.
Anyone have any recs for specific shows?

In my view, you basically can't go wrong with a Dopapod show, but here are some to check out on their Bandcamp page and/or llamamall.net. This list leans 2015 because, well, I listened to a lot of 2015 last year.

2015 was a great year for them too! Their jams have really opened up alot over the last year. I like your list. I would add 4/18/15 and 7/14/15 as shows to check out from the bandcamp page.

Not the best singing on BDTH, but some great playing!
Great sequence there. Perfect call as well what with the theater fire. And I'm gonna respectfully disagree, I rather liked Rob's vox.
Couple full sets from the recent Asheville shows (keep an eye out for the back of my head!) on mkdevo's YouTube page (https://www.youtube.com/user/mkdev0/videos).

That one's a "keeper" for sure!
I've also been watching some of his other videos from this run. The Weird Charlie, French Bowling and Sonic from night one, set two are all extremely top shelf.
https://youtu.be/nOUrIQ8di4o (https://youtu.be/nOUrIQ8di4o)
still super up and down with this band.
When The Jauntee opened for them in Denver, It just didn't do it for me. Super talented group of guys, but I just wasn't about their overall sound. They didn't "jam" really.
I feel like I keep going back and fourth
That Trapper Keeper jam fucking ROCKED though. True, unadulterated improvisation! That's what I'm looking for! Have they done anything like that since last year's Echos jam at the Sinclair? I distinctly remember praising that jam, and this one seemed similar in its spaciness.
Those actual 'improve' sets/songs just seem so far from the norm to me....

I think the latter-day Sinclair jams have seemed exceptional because there's been a little extra intent behind them. I read or heard an interview with one of the guys recently, who said that there's a comfort factor with that home-town venue/crowd that allows them to stretch out a little more. Maybe he was specifically talking about playing Echoes for an hour; but I also inferred that there could be a greater tendency to jam a little harder in that environment, perhaps intentionally, than there would be on a random Wednesday at a bar in Charlotte, say. Furthermore, their style just plain tends to be less spacey and more groove-focused, the majority of the time. And that can influence how jams unfold and/or are perceived.
Still, I feel I hear quality jamming in just about any show I listen to. They're also great at packing a lot into a short length of time. And it's gotten easier for me to discern as I've listened to them more and more; as a lot of their music is instrumental anyway, it's not always immediately obvious where the song stops and the jam begins.
In the 4/28 video above, both the French Bowling and the Sonic break down nicely and reform beautifully on the other side. The Charlie opener is a great jam, but in more of a tease/jam-fest kinda way, borrowing from established progressions. Nerds from the following night is super.
One show I point to often as being among their jammiest, pound for pound, is 2/25/15 from State College, PA (http://ten.llamamall.net/#!/years/2015/shows/2015-02-25). Weird Charlie, Onionhead, Bats in the Cave, Vol. 3 #86 and New James all have strong jamming, with 386 being my personal highlight of that show.
The Charlie from Aura 2015 (http://ten.llamamall.net/#!/years/2015/shows/2015-03-06) is notably manic.
The 4/25/15 (http://music.dopapod.com/album/2015-04-25-brooklyn-bowl-brooklyn-ny) Trapper Keeper is certainly out there, complete with vocal scatting and animal-noise samples.
You might enjoy the Phish teases in parts of both 9/24 (http://ten.llamamall.net/#!/years/2015/shows/2015-09-24) and 9/25/15 (http://ten.llamamall.net/#!/years/2015/shows/2015-09-25).
The 8/15/15 (http://ten.llamamall.net/#!/years/2015/shows/2015-08-15) French Bowling goes places.
So that's just a small handful to start with. Some other choice jams are behind their Bandcamp paywall. We could also crowdsource this on the Dopapod FB group if you really wanted to.
thanks a bunch for the rec's -- I'll check these out. :beers:
ETA: Listening to that Aura one now, they are definitely jamming hard!

I made it to the after-party last night in @ Surf Club in St. Paul. Fun times!
All four of them are talented as hell. They've got their thing going on for sure. They actually jam a bit. which.... who else does that?
Luke is absolutely kiiiilling it on the lights and overall production. Top notch stuff as far as production goes, imo.
Yep, with a good venue and proper space to set up their production, it's astounding. I love it.
By the way, Scotty, did your mom go too?

So, I've REALLY been digging these guys lately, and have knocked out 3 shows this weekend on the iPod.
I know I've asked before for recs (and I listened to them all), but does anyone have any more? I have a TON of their shows on my external HD. I just don't know where to go next.
I went ahead and put the entire month of April '15 on my phone. Gonna work my way thru it this week. :rawk:
Get a load of the Vol 3 #86 from 6/30 (https://dopapod.bandcamp.com/album/2016-06-30-highberry-music-festival-mulberry-mountain-ar) of this year, recently released. It's mighty fine.
Neil "Fro" Evans is back on drums for Dopapod (http://dopapod.fanbridge.com/campaigns/show.php?id=1376627&sid=214596580).
I believe I only caught one show with him at the kit. I *think* I prefer his playing to Scotty Zwang's, but honestly my listening is always skewing so heavily toward new stuff that 98% of what I tune in to is Scotty material.
WTU or anyone else learned enough to weigh in, please do.
This is such a shocker to me. I'm really curious of why/how it all went down...
As far as the 2 drummers, both are very talented but pretty drastic different playing styles so I think there will be a split wth fans. Fro is much heavier, rigid, hard hitting 'solid' drummer. Super tight, in the pocket. Lots of heavy Tom fills. Double bass pedal. Kinda reminds me of the Primus drummer.
Scotty was solid, yet a little more 'flow-y' an jammy. Id say his playing was more intricate and technical overall.
It's really gonna come down to preference. I thought Scotty took the band in a 'looser' direction that I personally liked more, but I think a lot of fans prefer the heavier style.
Interesting that you mention the Primus drummer.
You may recall that Jay Lane also played with Ratdog... Talk about range.
Scott, which Primus drummer are you referring to? There's been three main drummers since they hit their stride. Jay "Rhino Boy" Lane (1988-89, & 2010-13), Tim "Herb" Alexander (1989-97, 2003-10 & 2014-present) and Brian "Brain" Mantia (1997-01). Herb is the one I consider the true Primus drummer, though.
I agree that both drummers are different.. it took me a while to get used to Scotty because he was so different than Fro and I liked Fro. I've seen Fro in various projects since he left Dopapod and always enjoyed what he adds.
I thought Scotty was great too.
I'm fine with type I jamming and staying closer to within the song. I think their shows are great that way.
I think the transition back will be fine.
although I agree there will be a split with fans on which they prefer, I think a lot of fans see it as a win either way. both are great and both have served well as Dopapod drummers.
I used to watch this video from time to time and loved it. fun time at the Stone Church this night (undermind was raging as well).

My only hope there is that the door had been left open all along for a Fro return, and that Scotty was aware of that.

I'd say this tracks with my layperson's take. On recordings at least, Scotty can come across as a little snare-heavy and straightforward, but he can also be more sprightly, which is nice.

Are you making a prediction? The band's note talks about "recounting the original chemistry" as an implied reason behind the reunion. But I'd also say they've been getting more adept at improv and I know for a fact that Chuck, at least, has been very much digging that. So I hope this doesn't herald a more play-it-by-the-book approach; I'd hope that everyone in the (new) lineup is clear on what their goals are.

I don't make predictions. it's music. you either enjoy it or you don't.
I don't really get into the whole why people leave or are asked to leave (I have no idea what happened here and don't necessarily care). I know that I saw Dopapod probably a dozen times before the drummer switch and enjoyed their shows with Fro.
I'm also pretty confident that they know what they want to do and will strive to do it.
I'm not really sure I'd call type I jamming "play-it by the book" but everyone likes different types of music.
Dopapod has definitely has had some good out of the box jams but I'm fine with seeing shows that don't have bands jamming for the sake of jamming.
again, everyone is different.
