Missed most of the first set....caught from wolfmans on....sounded really nice.

Second set....Sand > Piper was HOT. GBOTT was misplaced. The Tweezer was disjointed.....it had MASSIVE potential, but it seems like they weren't able to hook up. BDTNL should just go away.....that killed the set for me.....I think if it had gone down as: Sand > Piper > Back on the Train > Tweezer > Steam, Silent in the Morning, Waiting All Night, Run Like An Antelope it would have KILLED.

All in all, not bad for a NYE run opener. Trey was on point. He was sounding much more technically crisp than he had all of 2013 imho. Page was the fucking MAN....as always.

Looking forward to the rest of the run!

To me, it's sounds like they are relaxed, having fun, and nicely settling into a 4 night run. Have fun if you're there in NYC. I'm gonna listen along, tonight via stream.

Also, agree with Mar, about BDTNL. I dig the tune, but thought it was poorly placed mid set II. They must really like that song. Thought both set openers were strong. Not a huge fan of Steam, but that one went somewhere. Overall, good stuff. :phish:

I was very pleased with that as a 12/28 show.  For the most part, they were very much on the same page and willing to explore which bodes well for the rest of the run.

Wasn't digging it overall. Steam was pretty serious...dark and scary. I'd never heard them jam it like that  -- my highlight of the night. Wolfmans had some stop/start jamming that def strayed from the usual.  I was also psyched they sort of added a solo on Monica. Wading all night was alright... Just kinda seemed like another ballad p break song at the time though for me. Decent song, but weirdly timed after silent... Would be cool to hear after some deep jam..

The number line and BOTT forces kinda ruined it for me though. #line force was brutal, just as the Tweezer was going somewhere IMO...but I guess that's the name of the game. Kinda dug the first set more than the second.

Excited for tomorrow

It had some great parts...Didn't get to pay much attention to the first set but Trey's use of the Echoplex during Wolfman's was the highlight for me.  Did not hear any of the first set after Axilla.  Trey's new amp sounds sick!  Second set Sand>Piper was great and I really like Waiting All Night.  The Steam was exceptional and the Antelope was solid but average as was the encore imo.  Some good stuff to be had throughout though and very few flubs.  Good show for coming in cold and a solid opening show for the stand.  The next few nights should kill.

Phish inc must be way on top of stuff, none of the YouTube videos for last night will play on my phone.

Some real nice stuff last night though.  I loved the darky funk of Steam

Had a fun night last night at mehead's pad with another one of our Phish fan brothers watching the stream.  We were kind of surprised with the Wedge opener, no biggie.  I actually liked this Stealing Time, Trey's lead playing in this version sounded different, good.  mehead and his wife cooked up some killer hot wings so were in/out for the middle of the set.  Wolfman's got out there a little bit, not as dramatic as last year's Little Drummer Boy, still pretty good.  An electric Monica was interesting.  Seven Below didn't venture too far off its path but sounded solid.  Tube was a nice version, rage Page.  Kinda burnt out on Free, it was fun talking about our favorite versions while we watched.
Our set break was longer then the band's, we missed the lyrics, caught it 1 or 2 minutes into the jam, solid jam, def one of my show highlights.  A nice Piper to follow.  BOTT was 50/50 in my book in that they have taken it out for a walk in the past, I was slightly optimistic.  3 Farmhouse songs in a row before Tweezer.  I too liked where this one was going, right before the ambient, trippy outro, Page was giving Trey hints of "lets take it somewhere" or shooting musical flares.  I was saying "listen to Fishman" who was laying down some nice time with his cymbals esp.  Mike was there.  I could hear and see Trey looking around, lightly strumming BDTNL.  bummer.  they should retire this tune, its an elementary school rock song.  Steam made up for it with a strong, trippy jam.  Trey utilizing his octave runs nicely.  I really haven't heard this tune very much in 3.0, its still very new to me, the jam was cool.  Silent without Horse works for me, I like its aquatic vibe.  Waiting All Night was cool in that it was something different.  Antelope sounded good, at this point we were having issues with the stream.
overall a fun night on couch tour with friends.  Not a bad opener really, I've heard worse from this era.
personal highlights:  Stealing, Wolfman's, Monica, Tube, Sand, Piper, Tweezer, Steam, Antelope(despite technical difficulties, we've had a lot of Ice up here in Maine).

looks kinda meh. some moments are hope for the run, rest of it pretty averagGood start though. Would rather have this show at the beginning of the run and then have it go all uphill from here.
think im gonna stream the show tonight.

Tempted to delete the negative review from the guy who hasn't heard a note.

I listened to this yesterday and dug it.
First set was song-y but good songs and the electric Monica with Page's solo was great. Wolfman's was pretty damned cool too. Tube, Free, Julius was a solid rawk blawk that had to be fun inside.
Second set was cool. Not expansive but a fine start. Sand > Piper was definitely fun. Tweezer was relatively brief and what can I say? I still love #Line. This Steam might be my favorite ever (so far). Waiting All Night continues to grow and I love it.The rest was nice high energy to wrap the night.

Not a bad beginning to the run, imo.

See those types of jams, I have a love/hate relationship with.
I love it gets the energy going, people start freakin out and cheering like they think its going to a type 2 jam, which I guess these jams are like the new 3.0 type 2 jam.
But, after the mark that I mentioned, the rest of the jam just feels like its just a buncha noise and feedback and loops. Not really any jedi moves going on, rest of the band is kinda in sync with whats going on (they are all just making noise which is pretty much all thats going on), the jam isnt going into any musical direction just a buncha noise. I noticed this several times over fall tour where I thought the jam was going somewhere but instead trey just starts making loops and noises and then all kinda notes and rythm stops and it just becomes feedback and noise. Its kinda lazy imo since from that noise doesnt come any other modulated or themed jam, it usually results in transition to another song, or just ripchord'd. Gets pretty boring to me.
I felt in at least 99-04 where trey decided to bring the jam into a buncha loops and noise, they would come outta that with an extended jam that keeps moving and growing instead of just using it to end a jam.

See, I kinda feel that this version of Steam is the one where they finally got it right.
The song is solid, concrete, and hangs together well.

Then the jam that comes out of it after 4.5mins is tight and dark. The 'Careful With That Axe' screams from Fish are perfect.
Creepy.
Then things get a bit more... nebulous. The intensity and weirdness meter rises and pegs out.
But Fish never lets up on the drums, Mike stays in tight, and they nail that drop at 10:43 which allows them to return to finish the tune.

I love it.

right.
which is why its a love/hate relationship for me  :-D
it does give me this tingling rise in energy feeling when I witness it live.
And there are couple versions of it where they actually come out of "the noise" and contiune into a sick jam.
Will return with examples when I do some research but the Reading 20 YL and some hampton jams come to mind.
(Maybe the tweez? hartford tweez or golden age, the big AC jams carini, ghost)

i really didn't hear any noise there.  there was a solid locked in groove which allowed trey to go nuts.
there was no 'shredding' going on but he utilized his effects properly (not just random whaling), hits all the right notes for the moment and creates a totally psychedelic, impending doom type of vibe a la fall 95. a face melter as birdman said.  then they stick the landing.  this might be one of my fav 3.0 jams.

Totally agree with Terry, RJ, Birdman, etc

the energy in that room during steam was insane. If you haven't listened to an AUD, you haven't heard the jam.

Really incredible stuff. There was a good 60 seconds where it was almost uncomfortably awesome. I was also high. But the replay value is high, too.

Agree with McGrupp that it sounded much different there than listening back to this sbd.

A good minute was basically Inaudible noise. Could really distinguish between instruments , just a wall of sound

It was sick.

I just gave Steam 2 back-to-back relistens and it doesn't work for me at all.  They do lock into the "jam" for a few minutes but it goes absolutely nowhere.  I feel if the jam was truly "dark", fish's screaming would work great, but unfortunately that is not the case.  And like others have said, the jam just turns into noise.  There was definitely potential there but IMO it never materialized.

I'm not sure what you guys are looking for.
It's type 1 tension that gets dark and lands neatly for the finish. Obviously, I disagree that it takes on a dark tone and Fish's screams add to it. But that's just my opinion.

No one said it was groundbreaking.

It's just a good, possibly the best (definitely my favorite), version of Steam.

But it's still just Steam.

I'd say it's the best version of steam I've seen live.

I'm pretty indifferent towards steam in general, but I dig this version.

More so live than upon listening back. Something doesn't translate. Probably the drugs.
