Is there also a format where you don't get booted after a bad pick? Otherwise the same (pick one winner, only pick each team once) but you get to hang around and then the league winner is whoever compiled the best record.

No worries. I kept feeling like I was forgetting to do something in my weekly Thursday/Sunday afternoon scramble to set lineups, etc., but I didn't place my finger on it until the guy next to me at work said "suicide pool."
