the 2nd set SBD is in the etree DB, and it appears to be tradeable:
http://db.etree.org/shninfo_detail.php?shnid=2104 (http://db.etree.org/shninfo_detail.php?shnid=2104)

but it's being debated if it is in fact a SBD and not a Aud recording

Sample opener>a splash of Hoist>nice solo, sonic.  Pen giving the largely rural Oregon its due>nice break at 2:00.  As a friend once advised me, variety is key.  Tranquility begins FEFY(a tune written about trying to maintain relationships while touring)>does Trey's solo mimic what he and his bandmates will do to their ladies when they finish tour?!? :-D  Trey gaining lots of sustain and power/choices, outro>...nice choice, Maze, countdown to liftoff begins, fits well thematically and musically w/ FE's outro series>Trey is in full command>Page drops in, Trey lurking underneath, subtlely approaching his lift while Page crescends, lock>Trey jumps off a cliff, ripping, atonal Trey meanderings>8:30 cool effect>more effects, Stash-esque peaks/crescendos>.
Guyute>quiet opening, song a build-up of opening 2 sing along numbers fused w/ the 2 previous sonic explorations.
IDK, again variety, their barbershop harmonies are excellent>
Melt>comes charging out, Mike sounding inspired>Trey w/ a different rythym style coming out of this one, darker expressions, straight tension from the outset>hints of Melt's regular key, Trey begins riffing again in a still darker approach, the band behind adapting and intensifying before a metal-esque jam ensues>interesting music nonetheless, a very cool jam 8:45 develops>swirling chaos, tornadic or volcanic(i.e. see the previous nights Antelope), ending comes together in classic Melt fashion w/ hints of previous dissonance>good version, Trey adding a bit at the end, very experimental, it pays off.  Adeline>ah yes sweet 'ol americana> this set reminded me of '69-70 GD shows from Oregon.

note: set 1 review is from an Aud. source, set 2 is from a SBD>Cass.

Peaches>always good to hear>Mound>Tweezer>(epoch tour for this one)>jam begins w/ a Fish pulse and light Page on keys before he switches to clav>Mike adding some mini- bombs, quite funky for Fall '94, great sound>Trey adding some dissonant chords into melodic improv>definitely a 2 chord or I-V feel, chugging along>sharp chording>consonnance is expressed but only briefly>caught in a line>escape ensues, frantic, uncertain air, deeper waters>rest, rest, rest, off the asymptote>grunge/metal>Trey coming in melodically, nice jam ensues>earth rattling, the subduction zone is careening into an event>screaming, run for your life>tidal wave>earth quake>volcanic eruption>nature rolls on(Fish 17:00)>gray skies emerge a light>gases clearing, a peaceful calm covers the landscape>and the cycle continues, Trey evoking archaic signs, a tribute to the beauty that surrounds>Norwegian quote>BBFCFM>rager about getting off work>more raging, unique version, vocal playness shift into music play-off>Maki slides in, nice bass line by Mike(excellent), "smoke a little herb">Mike back to his traditional bass line, >NICU, active, solid>Trey sings w/ much enthusiasm, lead action>creative run, Trey bending his way into a neat jam>back into Tweezer groove nice jam here as well>Bomb factory reprise into Jesus, I'd take this set 2 over 7May anyday>poignant variety choice>blues house>Hood>another "having a great year" heavy hitter>a Trey on acid composition>beauty>soaring eagle, the Cascades, early winter quietness>the immense Pacific and shore>what lies above reflects the processes of underneath>high above the River, sailing along, Slavie>Trey unleashes, band crescending(well rehearsed by this point), last hints of dissonance>nice outro jamming>

Great show in a period of many great shows>quite a difference between June/July and Fall '94>pHISh was playing off the hook, taking big risks but coming up successful(see this Melt).

Grade: solid A-

Not sure what to make of this. Are you implying phish wasn't playing off the hook earlier in '94 (borderline smite-worthy imo  :-P  ) or that they were taking more chances in November 94 (12.1 is an honorary November 94 show as I hear it )than they did from Apirl-July of that year (which I would absolutely agree with)

i love this show!

Sample-UPenn-Trey was really rippin' during this UPenn.he was really fluid throughout.
probably my fav bluegrass tune by the fish.

FeFy>Maze-really well played fefy.sounded very quiet and inspired.the maze was great.trey was laying down some low frequencies underneath page's solo section.probably one of the only maze's where i liked page's solo better than Trey's.

Guyute-IDK-old arrangment of guyute.very well played.

Split-i love this split!they waste zero time getting into the "evils".awesome work by page on the piano.really just a sick version.

Adeline/Peaches-Mound-gotta love the peaches opener!peaches and mound...2 songs i never got to see...oh well

Tweezer-definitely a legendary version.almost too hard to describe why it is so cool.of course, there is the trippy "start/stop" measures going on in the middle, but so much more going on.was a pleasure to hear this one again.>

BBFCFM-love the jam out of this...some more "evils">

Makisupa-almost sounds like Cannonball at first.cool minor key version>

NICU-cool segue into this with a cool major key outro going on>

Tweezer-Jesus-jesus is another one i never got to see (damn jedi!).and again, i prefer page's solo to Trey's on this one.my brother hated this song with a passion.
thats why we dont talk anymore...the last verse after trey's solo is quite funny.page sounds like Kermit!>

Hood-the jam stayed really quiet and focused for a LONG time, which i liked.nice, little %sky tease towards the end.

Golgi-Monkey-Rep.-nice solid closers.

classic show that deserves an A!

Same here, I spent the Fall of '93 in PAX, OR. and came back east for Spring semester '94.  A good friend and I spent a lot of time getting baked in her room, she had seen  :phish: bunches by then.  She knew I was a big Jimi Hendrix freak yet hadn't heard her fav. band.  She had just received a copy of 30Dec.93 and made me listen, from the first few notes I became involved.  Later on that Fall the 2Nov. Halley's>Tweezer solidified my interest.

First time listening to set I from this epic night. Not unbelievable but certainly a few noteworthy moments.
Not real found of the opening trio this night. All the songs are well played, but it feels like they took some time finding the right vibe.
Obviously they found it during the Maze. Nice, dark version, lots of heavy, thick texture in the jam. Kind of scarry.
Guyute...Love these earliy versions. Never did like the whistling.
IDK...provides some comic relief.
Melt...Picks up where Maze left off. Again, lots of tension. Love how thick these jams get...definately not 97 with lots of space...makes it difficult to dance to and makes you want to pull the hair out of your head. The tension is so...nervewracking. I like the way they bring it together cleanly towards the end and wrap it up tight as a nut.
Adeline...

I really enjoyed the Maze and Split from this set. I just go nuts for these chaotic 94 jams...food for the soul.
Jedi, I understand why you were like  :-o. Couldnt pick a better first show  :beers:

Great Show!!
Set 1
Sample - really like this song. strong, upbeat starter
Uncle Pen - continues the mood
FEFY-introspective lyrics; the instrumental puts an optimistic, positive spin
Maze - tight
Guyute - never a fan of this
IDK - fun
Split - finally a jam. really gets going around 7:30, T-R 10:30. Love 94 splits
Sw Adeline

Set 2
all I could think of during this set is how unbelievably locked in they were. Classic.
Peaches-great opener
Mound-more fun
Tweezer - top 5, exploratory, amazing. One brain, 4 instruments. Loved the NW jam; just killer
BBFCM-one of my favorite versions
MP-minor key mentioned, also cool vocal phrasing
NICU-nice transition with great ending >Tweeprise tease
JLC-yessss
Hood-again, the mental synchrony is mind boggling
golgi-good
monkey>Tweeprise-what a set-I'm exhausted  :-)
A
thanks phan, and best wishes

This show definitely gets an A. This is my first time hearing this show and I can't stop listening too it. Highlights for me are the Melt in Set I and all of Set II.

Set I
Uncle Pen - my favorite bluegrass tune Phish plays
FEFY - good Trey solo
Maze - GREAT page solo
Melt - totally sick and scary and out there and insane

Set II
Peaches - who doesn't love hearing this tune?
Mound - always liked this song this one is no exception
Tweezer - oh man!!! amazing version. i can't get enough of it. the start stop near the end before the N.Wood jam is awesome. With all the crazyness going on. Absolutely incredible to think that 4 guys can be making all that music. On the fly no less.
NICU - loved the segue into this one
JLC - WOW, sometimes this song just rips and this version sure does

Busy week - I'll be short. My condolences to you, Phan, and best wishes. Thanks for getting the sets sendspaced, aug.

not much original for me to mention. I'm hanging on the A/A- edge this week. Mostly because of the distance between the two sets. FWhateverIW, If I lost balance, I'd probably fall on the A side.  :-)

The first has some really well played tunes, but no more so than a ton of other first sets in 94, in all honesty. On the other hand, 94 in general isn't really a year for epic opening sets -- the ones that really stand out - to me - really are the exceptions to the rule. And I should add that I'd have described this one differently a decade ago, when guyute was still a rare and special treat :)

And the 2nd set is just sublime - one of the tour's best. What more to say about it? Beautiful flow. Transitions are bona fide segues, none of that hopelessly optimistic ">" stuff, it's "->" all the way 8-) The only ingredient in the Tweezer sandwich that I'm not usually a big fan of is NICU. But it's worked into the set so well that I just can't help but smile when I recognize it.

Thanks for picking a kick-ass set to represent fall 94, phan. Really hit the spot  :beers:

one of the best friends of mine asked me on the day of the show if i'd like to go see the show (god bless his soul)... i said "phish?  whats that?  oh, its a band... what kind of music?  mmm, weird... well, i do have a test to study for, but sure i'll go...  it was really close to where i grew up and knew salem like the back of my hand, so i said i could navigate him there (we were in school up by portland)....

i'd never really been to a concert before (i'd seen somethings with my parents, but i dont count those, cuz i didnt pay attention)... needless to say i was  :-o :-o :-o to the Nth power!

thats funny...
i did my first show when i was 13 (93).
at the time, i loved nirvana.
by brother had already done about 50 shows, and i knew their stuff.
first show was great .
second show was great.
third show (7-2-94) was the one that GOT me.
and it was % sky that just "pulled it all together"...
i had the "tears of joy" (uncontrolable laughter mixed with tears of happiness)
throughout.
there was no looking back from then on!

What was his first show and when did he start losing interest? Your parents must've loved having two phishheads in the house! :-D

i believe it was 5-14-92 Portchester, NY.
he probably couldnt tell you anything after 95, though.
he wound up doing around 225-250 shows...he is not totally sure of that, either!

ok, well i think its well noted here that this show means a whole lot to me (being my 1st and all)...  aside from that though this show kicks all kinds of ass!

1st set:
sample, pen- solid opening, i've really begun to appreciate sample as a great tune lately.
fefy- love this one, great rendition taboot
maze- not a huge maze fan, but this one is fun
guyute- love the old skool, when it was still a treat... because of that, this choice raises the level of this set
IDK- is what it is
split- hightlight of the set... this one is great...  love how it builds way up, then they dont release, instead heading into this deep, dark, persian style jam, where they start building again.... and slowly the build in the split ending... a top version of this tune IMO.

2nd:
peaches- umm, yes please
mound- one of two i was fortunate to see (other 12/31/02)
tweezer- this is an AMAZING tweezer.... top notch stuff going on in here... i really enjoy mike on this one, his tone is just great.  also love the frenetic chaos that happens right before they mellow it out into the NW jam, which is sublime also... into
furry creatures- not one of my more favorite songs, but it keeps the energy where it needs to be->
maki- policeman came to my house!  great version->
NICU- YES! i love this tune, its just soooo fun->
tweezer- another nice jam to hold you over till->
jesus left chicago- page is just blistering on this one!  hot blues ->
hood- oh man, this set just keeps going up and up and up!  and then a great hood to bring you back around... great collective playing
golgi- just for good measure... as if the rest of the set wasnt enough!  and like sample i've really begun enjoying this one again... reminds me of why i first started liking :phish:

monkey->reprise- nothing like a reprise to send you out the door into the night!

ok, well, this show just goes to show that they had "IT" in 1994... while i think their consistency of great shows was better in later years, this one is NO JOKE... probably one of the best shows we've had in the SOTW...

easily an A, really approaching A+, but needed one more something for me in set 1... it could have been maze for some, but its a lesser tune for me...

this show rips... period.  great choice phan!  i never have a problem with this one..

and it make it easy to see why i left that show going :o  and my friend saying "i told you!", and me looking at him and saying :o .... nothing...!

Well, not much else can be said about the 2nd set, that hasnt already been said. A unique mix of 94 rarities (Peaches, BBFC,NICU Makisupa, and Jesus) all linked together by an insane Tweezer. Couldnt ask for a more perfect set.. A+ for sure. I give the show an A- overall, only because the first set was Avg. 94.
Kick Ass pick
