Post by: PIE-GUY on May 18, 2020, 10:32:50 AM
PHISH, TUESDAY 05/03/1994
STARWOOD AMPHITHEATRE
Antioch, TN
Soundcheck: Funky Bitch, If I Could

SET 1: Rift, Guelah Papyrus, Maze, Sparkle, Stash, The Squirming Coil, Scent of a Mule, Sample in a Jar, Sweet Adeline[1]

SET 2: David Bowie, If I Could[2], Fluffhead > Down with Disease, Harpua, Chalk Dust Torture, I Wan'na Be Like You > Hold Your Head Up, Slave to the Traffic Light

ENCORE: Nellie Kane > Fire

[1] Without microphones.
[2] Alison Krauss on vocals.

If I Could featured Alison Krauss on vocals. Bowie contained Black or White, Sunshine of Your Love and Sunshine of My Life teases. Harpua contained "Charge!" and I Wan'na Be Like You teases from Page and Sunshine of Your Love and Sunshine of My Life teases. Adeline was performed unmiced. The venue is sometimes mislabeled as "The Veranda" at Starwood; the show was scheduled to be held there but was moved to the main stage due to rain. Interestingly, Hank Williams, Jr. had already set up his PA and light system for a tour rehearsal and allowed Phish to use his rig. After Stash, Trey thanked Hank for letting Phish borrow the equipment, joked that they would like to play the Monday Night Football song in honor of him and quoted All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight. The soundcheck's If I Could also featured Krauss on vocals.

Nice pick.  Stoked to dig in.  Only familiar with parts of it, never heard the whole thing.   :beers:

Rift - not a single person in the crowd is upset to hear the opening notes of this one.
Geulah - Asse Festival section smokes!  Speaking of which, bring back Asse Festival!
Maze - 94 heat. I always loved catching these way back yonder. So good.
Sparkle - Fall apart
Stash - A little faster than usual which is always welcome. Played nice and tight. Damn this a smokin' version. Absolutely loved it. Hank Williams never sounded that good.
Squirming Coil - Played perfectly.
Scent of a Mule - Some first set Phishgrass
Sample - In the familiar closing slot.  Or is it?
Adeline - The crowd is very quiet and attentive until the shushers take over and are actually louder shushing people than the people cheering.

Bowie - Black or White and Sunshine of Your Love/Sunshine of My Life teases during the hi-hats.  They nail the composed section and then Trey goes full-on dissonance as they drop into the jam section.  They don't get too crazy with this one, but it's solid.
If I Could - Certainly the best live version of this one without a doubt.  Great stuff.
Fluffhead - 94 tightness
Disease - Pretty concise jam.  Doesn't get out there but played well, for sure.
Harpua - This one always make any show special.
Chalk Dust Torture - Keeping that energy level high.
I Wanna Be Like You - Always loved this as a Fishman tune.  That was a great solo, King Louie.
Slave to the Traffic Light - Great way to cap off the set.  Just solid all around.
Nellie Cane - This was in heavy rotation in '94 and often in the encore slot before dropping off the face of the earth until Hampton '98.
Fire - A fiery finish to a fiery show.

Haven't heard this one in a while.  That was fun to revisit.  I love 1994 and so wish I would've caught more than just 2 shows that year.

we've all heard the stellar phish shows, but i love these picks because most of them are just normal tour stops...a snapshot of what they were doing at they time, night after night.  the spring 94 tour had begun about a month earlier, so the band was primed and ready to rock by early may.  pharmer's almanac says the attendance was 2,149 of a capacity of 3,000 if they had stayed at the veranda stage.  the big stage has a capacity of over 17,000 so let that mental image sink in for a bit.  oh yeah, and tickets were $20.

it can be hard to listen to these old shows and not start to bag on 3.0, but one thing i really enjoy in 3.0 is the fact that any song can jam at any time.  for the most part, this wasn't the case in 94.

this first set is pretty typical of the time.  not terribly long.  hot versions of rift and maze.  a stash that nearly blows the roof off the place, but doesn't get too unruly because it's the first set.

now, in '94, second sets could go anywhere!  teases abound to open a fantastic Bowie and we're off and running.  a special guest!  a mistake by fish (what does he start to go into?) gets us to an impromptu harpua.  trey is particularly animated for this one.  the dude had to just come up with all this on the spot as it appeared they had no intention of playing harpua.  he revists the cream/stevie wonder gag from bowie to lead the band into playing 2 songs at the same time.  boston cream, anyone?

throw in a fishman tune and a well placed slave and you've got yourself a typical mind blowing normal 1994 second set.  oh and then close with bluegrass and a ripping Fire.

if you weren't there or didn't get this tape early on in your phish career, there's no way this show is on your radar.  but...there's no way anyone left that show unhappy!  this is why phish grew so quickly from 1994-1996.  everyone had a great time, spread the word and brought more people next time.  it was exponential!

what's normal for phish isn't normal for any other band on the planet!

He starts playing Harpua but jumped the gun and didn't wait for the Oom Pa Pa vocals.  On the soundboard, you can hear Trey say "That's not how it starts".   :hereitisyousentimentalbastard

Also, when I was listening to it via my phone, I accidentally hit shuffle.  The Harpua false start comes at the end of the Down With Disease and the next track was Chalk Dust because I hit shuffle.  I was thinking to myself....how bad does that suck?  The crowd thinks they're getting Harpua, but Fishman fucks up and Trey gives them Chalk Dust instead.  That's bullshit!

This was a great pick.  Really enjoyed listening through the whole thing as I was not familiar with much beyond the If I Could.  It's all really well played, I like the flow of the sets and song selections.  I'll be revisiting this one for sure.  As Anthrax noted, this one has not been on my radar.  Because of the Allison Krauss the show itself is familiar, but I never listened to it before, which is why the Show Club is still awesome.

First set has some good moments in it. Maze, stash, and a nice Coil placed in there. Nice short mule too.
Second Set is money. Tease galore in the intro, black or white is nice and the sunshine of my life/love tease. I love '94 bowies. Some unique ones and they all seem to be perfectly executed. The jam starts out pretty dark but moves quick. If I could with Allison Krauss is sick! Fluffhead is another great version. Super tight composed section. DWD still finding their way with this one in '94. Interesting slot but keeps energy going in the second set. I might have only heard this Harpua from the show since I have gone through all the Harpua's before. Nice teases again in the Harpua. CDT keeps the ragin going! Havent heard I wanna be like you in a while! Sick! Beautiful slave to top off this awesome set. Nellie Kane > fire encore is sick! We have seen a lot of Fire encores this round, love it! Great flow as Caravan mentioned

5/3/94
Starwood Amp
Antioch, TN

SET I

Rift - great opener. Reverse curtain.

Guelah - the redundant rail.

Maze - I thought it was Bowie. Lol. Really great.

Sparkle - always a fun hoe down.

Stash - right to the point. Hits everything it should. More rock.

Coil - beautiful, and little jimmy is off to camp.

Mule - laser beams and everything.

Sample - I love it.

Set II

Bowie - oh wait this is actually Bowie. The sunshine Bowie. Great energy from everyone and a pretty awesome peak. Awesome start to second set.

If I could - I love this so much. I can't even say how much I love this. Did I mention how much I love this?

Fluffhead - I really feel there are no versions of this I don't love. This is no exception. Great segments throughout.

DWD - I swear there are fewer things better than a 94 disease, and as much as I love it stretched out I love a version that just is just a quickie and punches you in the face and leaves.

Harpua - Great story, cool teases and who doesn't love a a song about animals?

CDT - raging as always in 94.

I wanna be like you - second last time ever done. This would have been real fun as well is any Fishman sung tune though.

Hyhu - Fishman Hayes this song. I love when they play it.

Slave - really enjoyed this one like all other  versions.

E

Nellie cane - classic 94 bluegrass encore

Fire - if this is ever the last song played you just saw a great show.

Had a ton of fun listening to this. Another great pick. Thanks PG.
