Everything is connected, because it's all being created by this one consciousness. And we are tiny reflections of the mind that is creating the universe.

One review in a week?  It's only one set, people.   :shakehead:
It's Jerry week.

Also, it's not the Set Club.
Sorry, I guess I thought the whole show would be too much with the midnight-sunrise set. I just really thought this would be cool to do on record since it was a great show.

Can we talk about the Dead?  I'd love to talk about the fucking Grateful Dead, for once, can we please discuss the Grateful FUCKING Dead!?!?!?!

DoW

Jim - just love this as an opener and this was a great way to start this particular day.  took them a bit to find their way but really starts to fill in nicely about 2/3 of the way in.

Bitch - mike just starts to own this and the whole band catches on and really brings it home towards the end.

Tube - nice funky groove in this one

I Didn't Know _ I just really don't like this song

PYITE - average.  no complaints

Bouncin' - it's a nice short way to start (or keep) people moving.  I like it here.

Poor Heart - I despise this so much that I didn't listen to it.  Phish should act more like yankees.  that's what they are.

Roggae - calm, artistic, 4 band members in harmony

Melt - just great playing throughout and fits in nicely in this set.

Catapult - nice transition from Melt.  great version

GBOTT - love the groove they developed in the middle (in 3.0 it would ahve went plinko)

Horn - it is what it is.

Guyute - fit in nicely here.  nice ending

After Midnight - boom with the specialness (new words need to be written).  nice work by trey in the middle.

oh yeah, I can't tell you how much I love the u87s
I think this was a great afternoon set.  I'm going b+ because they played some songs I don't like.

Afternoon Set

Runaway Jim - Great way to start things off. They all sound loose as the jam gets moving but Fish in particular is extra playful. Like any good Jim, no one is way out in front; they all push it in their own way and it somehow blends into a badass, driving, cohesive jam. Short, sweet, and gets me moving.

Funky Bitch - Nice choice for an afternoon set. Page's solo is fine although nothing to write home about. Trey's packs a little more punch but still pretty laid back. It does the job though.

Tube - Trey struggles with "Paranoid". They let it develop nicely and then ~3 mins something sets the crowd off (anyone in attendance remember?). A couple of nice fills from Fish ~4:30 and I'm expecting the song to come to a close but it definitely does not get the 3.0 treatment. I like how Page switches over to the grand ~6:15 adding a freshness to the groove which, while enjoyable, was starting to feel a little stale to me. They hit the shuffle and close it out properly.

I Didn't Know - Soda Jerk!

Punch You in the Eye - Some solid playing but not a whole lot to comment on. Fish is the shit though.

Bouncing Around the Room - Indeed

Poor Heart - More afternoon songs. It's played fine I guess but it's not exactly commanding my attention so I'm not sure.

Roggae - I love this tune, but how do I know who's singing without the spotlight? Plus, I kinda zoned out since halfway through Tube and I don't feel like I missed anything.

Split Open & Melt - Now we're talking. Nice tight start leads to a fairly typical jam. ~9:30 Trey starts to push a bit and Page and Fish step right up to match Trey's energy. ~11:00 they start to stray from the theme and that's when it really gets interesting. Page adds some nice texture to the patience laden groove. It's almost too patient, but it definitely works well in the context of the afternoon set. The closing couple of minutes are really very cool complete with a super slick transition into...

Catapult - Groovy. Trey makes a joke about singing a song about tubes in his ween.

Back on the Train - Played fine I guess but there's a lot of afternoon filler going on.

Horn - Just when Trey goes into the quiet part of his solo, someone yells "Happy New Year's!" which draws a response from the crowd; I just love it when people decide to make it all about themselves.

Guyute - I'm down with the swine, but I find this placement kinda odd. This set has been losing steam since Tube (with one glaring exception) and Guyute is just not going to help salvage it for me. Gratuitous negativity aside, they put forth a fairly solid version (Trey does have a couple of sketchy notes at the end though).

After Midnight - Sweet. A little sloppy but it gets obvious bonus points. And Fish is a beast.

This set didn't do much for me. I'm sure I'd have a different story had I been there and I guess I could factor in the overall significance of the night, but it just was lacking something. Other than Melt -> Catapult, it felt like they were taking it easy. Totally understandable, of course, but it does me no good now as I listen at my desk. Fishman dominates the set. Thanks for the pick, aphineday, but it just didn't hit home for me. I'll go C+.

well boys, we fucked up by not being there.

I'll get my review up tonight.   Set has been listened to and the melt probably 5-6 times now, ser biz.  I planned on getting this up last night but when RJ is in town one must come to call.

Set I:

Jim - crowd energy is up, a little sloppy to start then goes into a nice grooving jam that fits the wide open space.   I LOVE an open sounding festival Jim.   Short but sweet and reminds me of Jim's from 96.

Funky Bitch - keeping the energy up, Fish and Page own this, Trey lays back and lets the grand really shine before the rawk and a great finish.

Tube - right off the bat Mike lays down a thick bass led groove the lets Page and Trey drop cherries on top.   Great Trey noodling before bringing it back

I Didn't Know - I do now

PYITE -  Fish bringing it.

Bouncin - break time

Poor Heart - damn that was a long line

Raggae - yes please, cohesive and like butta, no one stepping on toes.  Not one to remember but beautiful nonetheless.

Split >  Ser biz here and the only thing I remember taking away from this set at the time.  Trey finds his voice early and Fishman again brilliantly right behind.   Around the 12+ min mark you're scraping your face off the ground and nearing a head explosion.   14:40 and WTF is happening!  Too many insane parts to mention and then.......... the head explosion >

Catapult - sickest groove EVA!!!! what just happened??!!  insane, not sure what you can play after that

BOTT - yes sir

Horn - take it

Guyute - This set has fallen over a cliff after that Split/Catapult

After Midnight - How else could you end the set, nicely done.

Plenty of energy to start that carried into Tube, PYITE and the obvious highlight.   It was sad to see the set disappear after such a monster combo.   Overall when judged as a whole its flaws easily fall by the wayside

I'm not sure if I followed this thread correctly, but what guys are saying is that Dave Thomas sold crack in inner-city DC in the mid-80's, right?
