Listening to the 7/24/22 Sigma Oasis (which is my favorite "new" song) and just loving this bliss jam.

Do people not like the bliss jamming? I feel like I've seen a few things on twitter of people getting annoyed with this style of jamming ... true?

I don't see how you can't love it! as its name implies, it makes me feel so good and trey's peaks sometimes just give me goosebumps.

anyways, what are some other great bliss jams I can check out?

If Phish has done it, someone on Twitter hates it.
If Phish has done it more than once, someone on Twitter is sick of this trend.

I don't hate bliss jams, but I will say that going for the major key change in almost every big jam does add to the impression of all 3.0 jams sounding similar.

Add to that the fact that dark/"evil" jams are also relatively uncommon, and yeah spoiled Phish fans are gonna gripe.

As for recommendations, pretty much any over 10 minute Carini or Tweezer from the last couple years will probably have a bliss jam segment.

But, I don't think our fans do happily lap it up, I think they go online and talk about how it was a bad show.

jedifunk

interesting take... especially considering my initial jam is from 2022, which I believe is "4.0", but fuck if I know.

also thought... is a bliss jam in 3.0 how a funk jam was in 97? I remember ding-dongs saying they hated ghost in 97, and I was like "wtf they talkin bout?"

3.0/4.0, whatever.

My point is people that complain about "bliss jamming" are usually talking about how the major key happy jam has kind of been the default jam for a while now and it can be a crutch that doesn't really go anywhere. And I think there's some merit to that observation.

Personally, I get excited when I hear something a little different like the Eugene Ruby Waves, MSG Sand or Hartford Wave of Hope.

I'm with ya Hicks! not against ya!

but sometimes they hit this permagroove collective spot and it gives me goosebumps.

just listened to both the Eugene Ruby Waves and the Hartford Wave of Hope yesterday, coincidentally

The bliss jamming is fantastic, but as others have said, it becomes obscenely predictable.  They do it literally every jam haha.  So, yeah.  It sounds great, but it happens alllllll the time, so it kind of diminishes the effect.

yes, I guess we're going with 4.0 for post-pandemic.  What has also changed is that the band's Type 2 jams don't often reach definitive peak release points.  That happened A LOT in 2015-2019, where the Type 2 jams had similar "pop" moments the way an old Chalkdust solo would.  I love that, but they haven't done that much at all starting with Fall 2021.

As far as your last point, I'm not totally sure, but I could see people getting tired of it, because pretty much within the first 16 bars of any minor key jam, they make the change to major key.  You can almost set your watch to it haha.

Speaking from a musician's standpoint, major key jams are *MUCH* harder to keep interesting.  Because there's no tension.  And tension keeps things interesting.  Minor key jams always have that edge to them, and I find it much more "oh shittt!" when they make a minor key change from a major key jam.

In any event, that Sigma was fun to hear live and I danced real hard.  It was nearly 100 degrees so that was the only song I danced to haha which sucked, because the 2nd set opened with some serious heat.

I couldn't put my finger on it, but yes!  I am in this club.  I haven't enjoyed this summer tour nearly as much as other recent tours.  That's the beauty about Phish...like it or not, they constantly evolve and change.  No particular one style sticks around too long.

I just re-read my comment and it's a bit harsher than i meant it to be.  My point remains that they always go for the major key change.  Some Ghosts don't even get 30 seconds before they switch!

I re-listened to Hartford the other day and man, those jams are sick.  That Sigma is fucking awesome, mostly because of Phish's drum beat.

@jedifunk I would highly, highly suggest the Mike's Song from 8/8/21.  They do the major key change which is uncommon for them to do in Mike's, and it's fantastic.  Also I'm not sure how far back you need, but the Magnaball Tweezer > Caspian is required.  They just released it on vinyl.

7/31/15 KDF is also the longest version ever, I enjoy that one.

12/31/15 NMINML is also VERY blissy and ambient, almost 98-ish at times.  One of the versions of this song from Dicks is also SMOKING, Trey does this layering of his loops in a way that creates a guitar lick sort of by itself...  hard to explain.  He was doing this a lot at the time, almost making his guitar sound like stacked boomerangs or something, sort of a weird update of the whammy siren loop.  I'm fairly certain its the 2016 version.

Also you need the Vegas Golden Age from.... 2016 i believe it is.

yeah, I'm not saying I want the bliss jam EVERY TIME ... and maybe its just because I'm sort of playing catch up on 3.0/4.0 stuff and it feels new to me...

it just genuinely makes me happy when I hear it, so I'm seeking it out a bit more these days.

yeah if you haven't been following them closely for the last 6-7 years, its definitely new and exciting.  They got really good at making that move a while back, but it has become a bit of a predictable crutch lately.
