MSG Sphere in Vegas is about to become official...

"The big news is the news that the Las Vegas announcement is coming shortly. U2 will be playing a residency at the brand new MSG Sphere. Dates will be announced on Sunday night, via a commercial that is airing during the Super Bowl. Details should also be available online shortly after.

The announcement yesterday was via the U2Community account on Twitter. "It's happening Baby...", an image of the Vegas skyline with a baby's face in the sphere, and a link to U2XSphere.com. U2Community is a Twitter account run by the Zootopia team at U2.com.

Accompanying the news on Twitter, a press release was sent out to media outlets by U2's representatives. The press release revealed that there would be a commercial airing during the Super Bowl. The message included the link to U2XSphere.com and the image of the baby's head in the MSG Sphere, and the message "Something is coming............Tune in for a special ad this Super Bowl Sunday to see more." Additionally staff at MSG announced that the Sphere at the Venetian would be opening in September, so expect U2's shows to start at that time."

You can do that?

You can do whatever you negotiate with TM and LiveNation.

But, I don't think our fans do happily lap it up, I think they go online and talk about how it was a bad show.

I think Beyoncé, Garth brooks, and Bruce Springsteen (in some regions) have done that as well. Wonder if Phish HQ will join in or even care.

My wife's second cousin is the guitar player for Garth Brooks (and his wife, Trisha Yearwood). He's said that Garth is very fan-forward in his ticketing. He apparently doesn't even let the first two rows of seat be sold. He sends a team out to the very back, nose-bleed seats and finds fans to come sit down in those rows. Pretty cool, I think. He's offered us tickets when they come to town but we just can't get ourselves to go to a Garth Brooks concert.

He also just keeps adding dates in cities until they stop selling out to discourage scalping.

Bruce Springsteen did the exact opposite of this. Every seat in every venue of his current tour was sold using variable pricing. It pissed his old school fans off so much the fanzine Backstreets, which has been published since 1980, threw in the towel as an act of protest.

I was wondering why Backstreets stopped getting published.
