It is called "9".  I'd imagine 8 regular sets and a late night set.

I'd be super surprised if they didn't announce it as 8 sets.  I'd be even more surprised if they didn't play some type of late night set.

trying to lock down an RV right now.  Shouldn't be too hard as there is one parked in my dad's back yard that hasn't been used in some time.  Pretty sure the only reason he would say no is that it's not roadready, and if that is the case I will probably shell out money to get it ready

IMO a hockey game is much different than a festival.  Hockey game = close courters, screaming rabid fans all around you, sitting and standing and sitting and standing with every shot made on the net.  Festival = lots of room and you can always hang in the back where its nice and calm and not so loud.  I bet that baby was terrified of the people screaming all around it

Yeah, I'm always shocked when I see that at hockey games, especially people sitting in the lower levels where an errant puck and a moment of not paying attention could be disastrous....

if you want my honest opinion though.  It's going to be HOT, there will be a lot of walking, lots of sun and since it is a phish fest there will undoubtedly be rain too.  If you bring an RV and a nanny I would say go for it... otherwise I say it's best to sit it out or get a babbyitter at home

that's really young to be passing the child off to the gparents for a long weekend.  at that point, the baby may be awake for an hour, sleep an hour, eat (it would be tough to pump 3-4 days of breast milk that soon after the birth if you're planning on nursing), lather rinse repeat for the entire weekend.  that's a lot of not sleeping for grandparents, unless they are under 50.  plus, as a new parent, you may not want to be away from the child for that long at that point.  it's fresh in my mind, that's why i am offering the perspective.

as for me, i have to negotiate with my wife whether she'll be cool having me away for 3-4 days, and our child is 2 and sleeps through the night...

I unfortunately won't be able to make it, but here are some of my initial thoughts:

I can't wait for From the Archives and the Bunny
I hope there is a webcast-Audio or Audio/Video
I bet String Cheese wishes they picked a different week end for their fest!

I agree with all three of those statements.

if you want my honest opinion though.  It's going to be HOT, there will be a lot of walking, lots of sun and since it is a phish fest there will undoubtedly be rain too.  If you bring an RV and a nanny I would say go for it... otherwise I say it's best to sit it out or get a babbyitter at home

Most grandparents LOVE having the baby. Try to pass her/him off on your parents.

that's really young to be passing the child off to the gparents for a long weekend.  at that point, the baby may be awake for an hour, sleep an hour, eat (it would be tough to pump 3-4 days of breast milk that soon after the birth if you're planning on nursing), lather rinse repeat for the entire weekend.  that's a lot of not sleeping for grandparents, unless they are under 50.  plus, as a new parent, you may not want to be away from the child for that long at that point.  it's fresh in my mind, that's why i am offering the perspective.

as for me, i have to negotiate with my wife whether she'll be cool having me away for 3-4 days, and our child is 2 and sleeps through the night...

pcr3 raises very good points. I haven't yet brought my daughter to a show, but I think a newborn would be easier to handle than a toddler. I'm pretty sure you'd want an RV, and DEFINITELY hearing protection for the babe if she's going to the concert field with you. I saw a woman with a brand-new baby at Hampton '09--she chilled near the back, earphones on the baby, all night--looked like they had a fine time. RJ and birdman both have experience with this I know.

I had a great time at the Lemonwheel and we brought our6 month old. My wife, not so much. She left the shows early every night so I would have to make the 2 mile walk back to the tent with her at setbreak then make the 2 mile walk back to the grounds for sets 2 and 3.
Honestly, I would not do it again. It was fun but HUGE amounts of work with lots of little obstacles to overcome. As a friend I recommend staying home and enjoying your newborn in the safe, clean, protection of your own home. A Phish festival is no place for kids.

I hope everyone doesn't mind Dyspepsia, regular pepsia or diet pepsia!  :hereitisyousentimentalbastard

From the research I've done:

You mix your good rum (bacardi, morgan, etc) with coke.  the tartness in the coke balances the smoothness in the rum.

You mix your shitty rum (admiral nelson, ronrico, osco, etc) with pepsia.  The smooth, sweetness of the pepsia balances the harsh overtones of the rum.

That's assuming you're not drinking Rum & sprite or Rum & water.

In, and very much ready!! Maybe more excited for this than I was for Festival 8.  I already have a hotel booked, but thinking of other options as well. Possibly some Glen Close Camping action depending. Who knows at this point, but I do know I'm ready to hang with some good people, and have a great weekend at Watkins Glen! Yes!

I am leaning heavily towards going. It's somewhat difficult to pass up a phish show. It is more difficult to pass up NYE. it is extremely difficult to pass up a phish fest.

Of course money is the issue. I'm trying to decide if I can handle camping.

Maybe, but it seems they may be more low key than they used to be.

the late-night scene @ Festival 8 was practically non-existent.  I had to search pretty long before I found any late night festivities. Only one band playing in Kid A lot iirc...

I wasn't at Fest 8 but maybe it was the venue and scene it self, not sure.  But now you have a festie back in the NE, at a racetrack, etc.

There's also the matter of where to set-up......

....like.... do we just set up where ever? That could lead to some seriously frustrated camping neighbors...

d00d, it's a  :phish:  festival

Maybe, but it seems they may be more low key than they used to be.

the late-night scene @ Festival 8 was practically non-existent.  I had to search pretty long before I found any late night festivities. Only one band playing in Kid A lot iirc...

But there were at least three bands popping off late night after the Gorge shows.

Yes, while looking for food I was distracted by the half nekkid glowing hula hooping girls on the roof of an RV with a band playing below them....oh that reminds me, WTU, you need half nekked girls hula hooping on the roof of your RV.

STS9 was the after-after party, the bands were kind enough to pack it up around 1 or 2.   :-P

Fest 8 had a lot more people off site then a normal fest so I think the late night scene is going to be a little different at WG then it was in Cali.

Go for it Scott, what the worse that happens? Someone tells you to stop playing? I think you'd be more furstated if you came not prepared to play and then find out it could have been easily done. Besides I think a lot of people around here would love the chance to get to see you play.

It WOULD be pretty sick to get a huge Paug crew rocking out to my band late-night!  :beerbang:

the question is.... can you bring in a generator to the camping grounds?

I would think so if you have a big enough camper to justify it.

That's how EN2 got their generator in. They had a bunch of us park strangely around their rv so that there was a 'concert area' and they even had a tent set up at the back of it with a soundboard.

I'm waiting to buy a ticket until after Bethel. My funds are super tight and if the band's still not jamming I just can't afford to make the trip.

I wouldn't hold your breath, d00. If the last two years are any indication (they are), the shows are merely a fun place to hang with your peeps. I'm not expecting to get my mind blown musically this summer.

But seriously scotty, we've talked about this before - are you expecting anything other than just "fun" this summer? I mean, fun is awesome! don't get me wrong, that's why i'll be at shows this summer. but along with a lot of other paugers, I feel like I'm done chasing the "epic show" because it's a constant set-up for disappointment. I mean 3 "good" shows per tour? Not trying to be a downer, but I can't afford to go to all the shows just to see a handful of good ones...

Sorry phish!

All of that said, I will still be raging the shit out of this festival. It's going to be "fun".

As far as I'm concerned, Phish is still currently the greatest live act to see in the world.  I see a lot of live music, and I've yet to find anything that compares.  In a matter of fact, I've yet to find anything that even comes close.  I've seen many of the bands that some here consider to be some of the best current live acts out there (Animal Collective, MMJ, Akron/Family, Furthur) and not a single one of them has impressed me musically in the way Phish does.

I am consistently impressed with their level of musicianship and frequently find myself in awe of their incredible listening skills.

I don't need huge, epic jams to have my mind blown.  I can see some random 3.0 Limb x Limb jam and still be completely blown away by the interplay between Fishman and Trey.  The way they bounce ideas between each other and have the ability to mimic rhythms w/ in fractions of a second is absolutely phenomenal.

Yeah, it used to be way better.... but it still is extremely impressive.

That's a really positive way of looking at it, and I definitely respect your optimism.

Phish is my favorite band in the world, too. I'm certainly not trying to come off as jaded, because I still REALLY enjoy seeing the boys play and I have a lot of fun at the shows. You will never see me *not* having fun at a show, as a matter of fact.

But after all of the 3.0 shows I've seen (I know you've seen more), and ALL the money I've spent, it's really hard for me to justify spending another summer following all the setlists and seeing this band every possible chance I get, chasing something that just isn't there for me. It's there for you, and that's great! I'm just really tired of being broke as a result of seeing the same Rock n Roll/Drowned/Tweezer/Hood jams every night. Sure, there are still "those shows". Utica is great, and the Augusta show is awesome as well. Definitely worthy of getting excited over, I'm not arguing against that!

I've just seen a ton of phish in the last two years and I am tired of waiting for something to happen. They simply haven't proven to me in that period of time that they're worth spending 2 or 3 grand on this summer. I just can't afford to do that to myself.

BUT, like I said, I will be at a handful of shows this summer (still more than the casual phish fan, probably), and I will have a blast at every single one.

Anyway, this wasn't meant to be a big explanation for myself about being let down about phish, at least originally. Danje suggested that he might not go to superball if they don't start jamming, and if that's all his decision is riding on, instead of going to hang out with friends, party, just see live music in general (all awesome things), then he probably shouldn't go. Superball will be FUN, but I really predict that it will be more of the same, and not mind-blowing (although if 3.0 LxL's are what you're into, I'm sure you'll be all  :-o )

Yeah its really a tough decision for me right now. Basically the only the reason I see this band is for the music - of the 13 shows I hit last year 10 I did solo. Its almost like some sort of gambling addiction where I'm convinced the next show will be when they finally throw down a 30 minute jam. Honestly at this point I don't even care if the jam is any good, I just want them to fucking go for it. But who knows, I wouldn't be surprised if I cave in and end up going.

For nerdy fans and stat geeks like us, yes...

For the casual phan going to the show with his girlfriend "because phish is in town"? I don't think he'd care that much.

Let's not forget that the paug isn't an accurate sample of the phish population. Lots of fans just want to go and drink beer and rock out to Character Zero and see the white lights flare up during a rawk peak. Trey gets off on that, and it seems pretty profitable.

and far more importantly, I'm sure RJ's hype meter would increase.

its funny, even tho i totally agree with this point, at the same time back in the heyday i woulda never said this was true. honestly when the band was selling out shows between 95>00 i never thought of the crowd as "less than heady". it seemed a pretty big cult thing at the time, imo. not so much a 'dave matthews thing'. i could be wrong, but... its almost like theyve managed to garner some nostalgia type fans that werent reallt phans to begin with. like: "hey lets go see phish and do whippets and smoke some pot and eat some X like that ONE time back when we were CRAZY"...lol, really? i really wish phish would just take a serious LEFT TURN and deal with any loss of finance just to make some sort of artistic statement. tho, at the same time, i never really viewed phish as THAT type of band... ::ducks::

That's what i'm saying - ticket sales would definitely increase for people like us. But not all phish fans are like us!

But it's very tough to say. I certainly don't know, I'm just speculating.

I'm starting to feel like i'm echoing thatfargone here, but i'll say it anyway: I think that if more people cared about the quality of the band's music, the band would be forced to push themselves and not be so complacent.

And i'm not talking about "us", i'm talking about your average phan who just shows up to the show and gets wasted, rocks out to tweezer reprise and holds his beer up in the air during waste.

I feel bad making such a "hettier than thou" comment, but you can't overlook the fact that we are very obsessed and nerdy fans and we care a lot about the music. Not, perhaps, more than the majority of the fanbase, but definitely more than a lot of it.

One of the reasons I think phish used to be so much better back in the 90's is because so many more people toured with the band and saw them every single night. That's not to say that everyone did that, but certainly more people back then. When you're seeing a band every night, you're going to expect more out of them, and the band knows it too. When you're just seeing them "because they're in town", it doesn't really matter what the band plays. They will go to the show and get drunk with their girlfriend and have a blast, regardless of whether or not it was a shitty show.

I completely agree, and I've actually been saying that for a while, especially in regards to the audience's responsibility to demand more.

But I think that a lot of the true psychedelic warriors aren't even bothering to see the Phish anymore, and if the jams came back maybe they would too.

I think you're probably right about that.

It's funny because all phish needs to do is practice. Trey doesn't need drugs, the audience doesn't really need to care as much as the rest of us (well, they kinda do), the fanbase doesn't need to be younger, the band doesn't need to be younger.

They just need to practice.

I dunno there may be more people out there waiting for the return of IT than we think.

Not sure if I agree with that, while practice definitely makes for a tighter Phish with better overall playing I'm not sure that it makes for a Phish capable of more creative improv.

And when I say "Phish" I mean Trey.

I think the crowd energy that pushes them to explore new musical ground is a huge factor.

So how exactly do "we" as an audience change this?  Do we not cheer after songs?

I just don't really see how the audience can "demand more" w/o having direct contact with the band.  And even if you are in contact with band, that surely isn't going to stop doing them from doing what they want to do.  You don't think there hasn't already been someone saying to Trey "Yo man, where's the JAMS?!?!" ..... because I do....

It seems to me that "we" (meaning many of the longtime/hardcore Phish fans) have already been demanding more.  It's not like all of us are sitting around praising every thing that Phish is doing these days -- I think nearly every person on this board would express some level of disappointment in 3.0 .  Even I, the king of n00bs, wishes that Phish were making better music these days.

What do we do? Not go to as many shows? Not buy their recent  3.0 DVD releases? Not buy their unnecessarily packaged Joy Box set? Because that seems to be exactly what "we" are doing...

for me its not about them practicing. i really dont get freaked out by slop. as long as its ORiginal slop. honestly, 3.0 bores meas a whole. outside of nostalgia that is. which if played correctly can be great and even open up new avenues. the bad part is there is a BIG difference between nostalgia with heart and nostalgia that seems purveyed for nostalgia's sake.
im not 100% accusing phish of just playing shows to make $$, but it just seems as if much of 3.0 that they really dont seem to be enjoying what they are playing. i think thats the difference you hear.
now, the question is do they have any desire to do something NEW. not write tunes that just sound like Farmhouse 2.0, but a real progression.
when you look at their original output since their return, can you really say it took you to a new place?

:-D

I'm pretty sure there is nothing "we" can do. I think my argument is more based around the "times have changed" outlook on all of this. Which is funny because I wasn't even around when times were different.

I think the vibe at shows is different. Lots of people are all grow'd up. Trey is sober. They're under Red Light management. Not as many people on tour. The list goes on and on.

I'm not saying we at fans are at fault, necessarily. I just am making the observation that the vibe has changed now. It's not a totally bad thing, as I've been continuously saying, I will always love phish and their music, at least until I've listened to so much that their songs bore me (I see that taking a long time). I love being at shows.

At this point, for me personally, it might be easier to not care so much about it and just have fun as opposed to caring a lot about whether I'm seeing the good or bad shows.

Wait, maybe it's people like me that are the problem!

My point is- I don't think we have a lot of control over how well the band is playing, in a direct sense. It's just a natural evolution and things are different now.

That's sort of my point.  I don't think that everyone is lapping it up.

Other than me.... most people aren't seeing copious amounts of Phish shows anymore, partially because their music isn't up to par.

You really expect the crowd to not have reactions to the big rawk peaks, and songs like Tweezer and YEM?  I think the crowd still lets the band know when they are not into the music (ie. any time they play TTE, Let Me Lie and the like) but I don't see how a bunch of Phish fans are not going to have fun and show their appreciation at a Phish show.

I guess maybe what you may call "lapping up" I call "having a positive attitude."  I'm going to see Phish because I love their music, why would I spend my energy hating on it when it will make no difference in the outcome of the music? Like McGrupp said >>>>

Don't these 2 comments contradict each other? Unless you're trying to get them (read: Trey) to fall into some vicious loop of rawk peak > whale call > rawk peak. And I don't know why you'd wish that on anyone.

I agree with you that crowd energy pushes the band to explore new places (e.g., the oft-cited Greek Cities). When I go to a show, I can't help but let my energy and excitement come out. Then, when I get back to the car I might start bitching about how Trey fumbled thru Reba or forced a segue right when things were getting interesting. I won't drive 6, 8, 12 hours to see them like I used to and I might not download every show and listen to it the next day. But during the handful of local shows I'm lucky enough to see, I'll continue to be hopeful that the crowd can will them to that place again. Shit, there's been so few moments of IT in 3.0 maybe they forget addictive it is.

Wait, is this the Superball IX role call? Nevermind what I said, I'm not gonna be able to make this one.

No, I'm saying that if people are listening carefully and critically and in the proper headspace then the crowd can push the band to explore new territory.

If they are happy with whale calls and standard rock peaks and go apeshit for it every night then it's likely that Trey will be content too.

So I had written this off as a nogo from day one.  Then I just got an email asking me to be in buffalo that week before for work.  It's only two hours drive from buffalo, eh? Hmmmm. My wife hates me already. Is this happening?

We've been to one, !!!, and are planning to go to MMJ in a couple of weeks.

But neither require travel, grandma just has to watch her for a few hours, which is no biggie since we only live a mile apart.

Part of the appeal of the tent rental is being close without being in the glen close... My fat ass will like it that way.

Release times/dates for each individual vinyl release will be announced in the program guide when you arrive on site.

Pre-show Portsmouth '10 had a lot of folks in that poor guy's apartment.

There's that pic where me and Blat were passed out, which had quite a few of us, but I remember waking up in the middle of the night to pee, and just was stepping over wooks galore. Portsmouth '10 and Charlottesville '09 were big.  I can't imagine that those were the biggest.

Oh and lope, I guess that means I'm not picking you up from the airport on Friday?   :-D  I say do it!  Lets your Super balls breath!

^^^ Those were both big meet-ups, but I'm pretty sure there was a bigger group in '09 somewhere, maybe Camden? Or maybe it was in the MidwestEither way, I think this weekend will certainly have the biggest.

I was just talking about sheer numbers, I think someone said the DC was the most at once ever.

Don't think so, but I could be wrong....

There's that pic where me and Blat were passed out, which had quite a few of us, but I remember waking up in the middle of the night to pee, and just was stepping over wooks galore. I don't know how many stinky bastards were in the dudes place, but then when I woke up in the am, there weren't as many.

Yeah man I was there, we also met when you came up to Richmond one time and Jonathan, Modi, Mandi, George and Pat were there. We saw some Soulpower DJs.

Paug meetups are WHERE IT'S AT YO!

I can only get so excited about hearing my 31st #Line and Possum  :-D

Was it not for my situation, the long ass drive and not being able to find anyone interested in a roadtrip, I'd be there with bells on.

Where's the paug meetup gonna be? is there a mass text goin out?
The official map puts all the car camping kinda far from the entrance.

You're there for four days and the longest straight-line distance on the site is something like two miles.

I'm only going as far south as NYC and I don't think I have any room in my friends car but if for some reason we have space I'll let you know and we could at least take you to the city.

By the way, if anyone is wondering about my new avatar.  During the Charlotte > Portsmouth run I somehow construed the idea that George's tiny peen has to look like a melted tootsie roll, and sure enough google had an image of a melted tootsie roll.  So BOOM.  I'm rocking the Tiny Peen avatar.
