Currently have the stock onkyo speakers that came with my system.
:holds head In shame:
Believe it or not, they don't sound that bad and have treated me well. Hopefully I can save up and get a major upgrade some day.

Onkyo isn't half-bad... Depending on what you got, you may already have decent speakers... Maybe you just need a new amp???

Agreed. I love my onkyo receiver. The speakers are fine, just nothing special. They do the trick for me

Probably not. I've heard good things about the Audioengine powered speakers though. Some friends claim the $199 model has an awful midbass bump but stereophile seemed to like them.
I just picked up a vintage pair of Polk's myself! RTA-12C and they sound amazing, but I need to do the tweeter upgrade as I hear this takes them to the next level.
Hicks I am a huge fan of Aperion and wish I could afford a pair especially the new Grand line. Someday!

A good deal, depending on the state of the speakers. ESL63's need to be completely rebuilt about every 25 years. There are plenty of aftermarket folks who do this (I recommend Kent at Electrostatic Solutions (http://www.estatsolution.com/). Great guy, great prices, great work. A full rebuild runs about $1000/speaker. So if the above pair is all stock, they COULD be about to poop out at any minute. Or maybe not. I bought my pair for $600, and one speaker which had all new parts in it was making a horrible noise (the seller was open about this, thus the low price). So I sent it to Kent, and he cleaned it up and fixed it, so all in all I'm in my speakers for $1000. The other speaker is all stock and is still going strong, other then the occasional low bass hit ruffling the dust cover. I know that eventually it will have to go to Kent for a full rebuild.
I love my Quads but like any vintage piece of equipment they can be tricky like that. I'm happy I "have a guy" who can help me with them when the time comes.

They are really nice vintage speakers, and they've lasted over 20 years. With all the moving around that I've done in the past year they have taken quite a bit of abuse. I'd really like to get these bad boys fixed up and looking/sounding like new. Has anyone here ever refurbished vintage speakers? How would you go about doing so and how much (ballpark) do you think it might cost? These things are really sentimental. It would be hard to throw them away.

i looked around in chicago to have some fixed maybe like 2 years ago? for refoaming the wolfers i was looking at 1-300$
it all depends on the wear and tear, price wise.. are you wanting to to external or internal fixer-ups?

Personally, I think they both need new highs and lows put in. And definitely some new wires. So I'd say all internal.
I forgot to mention that they are starting to cut out on a frequent basis.
My advice is to buy some new speaks from me. :wtu:

Pretty much a 180 from the soft dome tweeter, not a big fan personally, too bright for me.
Ok, thanks hicks. These angstroms are 3 ways and one of the tweeters isn't working great at mid to high volumes. Was messing around with it and frustrated so started scoping out an upgrade in the speaker dept and came across some.
Horn loaded speakers make sense for PAs since they can push really high SPL easily and some people love them for home audio too, with Klipsch being the most common example.
Maybe one of these tweeters would be compatible with your Angstroms? The Scan-Speaks are pretty legendary.
