Killer show!  Had some amazing parts.  There is some part of Fluffhead that is super sick. Just played the crosseyed twist.

Four shows of mixed results (ymmv) and now we've made it.
Excellent Phish concert.

That was a great phish show. No doubt. No low points at all, imo. They were listening. Each member had passages in the second set jams that I'd put amongst their most creative... and a lot of that has to do with Trey sitting back and letting them shine.

Cannot wait to relisten. This one may be on reapeat today.

Jumped in with set two and the C&P > Twist > Waves > Miss You is a terrific piece of work.

Only a couple of minutes into C&P--and noting that this must be the slowest version they've ever played.
Not that that's a bad thing...so far it sounds great...

I listened to this show at work and thoroughly enjoyed it. I will have to revisit the second set once I can do some critical listening to fully appreciate it.

Love the jams out of Crosseyed and Twist.  Shades of BD.  Finally a half decent Melt.  The 3.5 minute dark ambient jam is superb.  Paying homage to the 07/22/2003 juggernaut.  Yin/yang set 2.

Great show, definitely the best show of the 3 overall, although I think Chalkdust and Golden Age were probably the two best jams of the weekend.

Had a solid paug crew with mr. and mrs. wtu, mr. and mrs. birdman and mr. and mrs. JP and mr. and mr. Hicks and of course it was awesome to see everyone.

Also, got me my first Tela, aw yeah.

Had a great time, went pretty big with emay on Saturday night so I was pretty spent by the end of this show. Still enjoyed it top to bottom with so many old school heavy hitters like Curtain With, Reba, Fluffhead, SOAM, they were all played well and definitely one of the better Splits of 3.0. Only regret was not getting another beer during Miss You.

Apparently we camped next to one of the guys from Nice Nice who are fairly well known Portland band that put out an album on Warp a few years ago. Ironically only found that out after we left though.

Except for the appearance of the song who shall remain nameless, all in all it was a pretty perfect weekend.

Hopefully we can all do it again soon.  :beers:

That was everything I want in a Hicks review! Jealous of the West/East paug crossover event. That's a helluva a crew.

I watched this last night and while I was mildly distracted and could've given it a more critical listen, I was somewhat underwhelmed by that second set. Not sure if it's an expectations game thing at this point after seeing universally glowing reviews but I felt like the meat of the set just meandered a bit. Maybe I was more distracted than I thought, will give another listen at some point. Def best of the three IMO tho.

I did think first set from Reba on was some damn fine Phish and Waiting All Night just might be my favorite all-around 3.0 song (dat Wombat doe). Thought Trey did a very admirable job in Tela too. Not perfect, but solid effort for sure.

For me, the best of 3.0. Of course that's not really saying much. I can't remember which show it's from, but there was a fairly lengthy version back a few years ago that people were slurping up that I never understood. No re-listen required for this version. Good stuff.

I agree with this. This is the first 3.0 melt that I was honestly impressed with. You could really just tell they were taking their time and letting things unfold naturally. Although my only gripe, and it kinda is the gripe all weekend, Trey just kept fucking around with his pedalboard too much. Some of it worked very well, but there were definitely times it would have been better suited to just drop the effects and just build a groove that way.

Think you are referring to that SPAC 13 one, which was lengthy but if I remember it being a little drone-y

I disagree - there were times when Trey went into some new effect and it allowed him to take over Page's "color" role so Page or Mike could step up into a lead role. That, I think, is the whole point of what he's trying to do.

It's interesting, because I actually saw 3 nights of Trey's Trio tour in NOLA in the spring. He definitely added a ton of "color" effects and different sounds that helped keep those shows from falling into boring patterns. If he had a clean tone all night for 3 nights then every song would literally sound the exact same. Bass, drums, guitar... tension-release... mellow solo... yada yada yada...

Instead, he would create an organ-like layer with the Leslie speaker and his digital loops and then play something else over that. It really filled out the Trio sound to seem like so much more.

Throw all that stuff into Phish and he's basically in the same game that Page has been playing for years... add more sounds and color to every jam by adding new toys to the arsenal and mastering them to the best of your ability. Early in the tour we see Trey experimenting with how and when to use the new tricks... mostly to great effect... occasionally a swing and miss... but it will only get better with time as all four of them get used to the new approach.

I am 100% bought in! I love it. I think it's gonna make 2018 a really fucking interesting year for Phish.

Yeah I'm with you PG. I love his experimentation with new sounds. It's not much differnt than 99/00 where he'd dick around with FX all night and just let the rest of the band play Sand beneath his sonic landscape.

I think his choice to lay back and let the other guys take over shows just as much musicianship as ripping the guitar. He knows his capabilities and he knows that the other 3 in the band are filled with musical ideas so why not let them have a stab at it!

I think it may have been the mix then. Cause it didn't sound like backing effects live. Sometimes it sounded like he was playing with the loudness of a lead and kind of overtook the rest of the band in certain points. Kinda aggressive at times even. Then again I always feel like Page's grand is a little quiet and can get easily lost in the effects.  But I do know exactly what you're talking about the C&P>Twist had some great build up  and use of the effects, shit was heat. Some of that dissonant spacey layering to float around in.

Maybe he's just gotta hit that volume down a bit when he starts crushing the effects. But I love the use of his Leslie for sure. I'll have to go back and listen to the boards to see if I'm still hearing it.

I *still* hear it when I listen to Phish play Crosseyed. Shit, I caught myself singing it that way in the shower last winter. When I listen to the Talking Heads album version, I hear "still waiting" now, but I have to remind myself.

This is an excellent Wombat. But I may prefer last year's in Dayton.

Sounds like they forgot how to play The Birds. They're completely out of sync at the start, but even after that it all just sounds off.

Yeah, there has been some great stuff this tour (LA, ATL, MPP) but there are still some highlights from the Gorge that hold up to the rest of this tour, specifically the 3 you mentioned (and Wombat).  I think the Chalk from the first night is excellent too.
