Ghost was great.
Show was ok.
You forgot Auld Lang Syne between Meatstick and After Midnight. Also, First Tube had Auld Lang Syne teases.
Highlights I heard were Ghost, YEManteca and Meatstick, (Meatstick more for the sights than the music)
yeah thought the Ghost jam was really really good. then in typical 3.0 fashion they played a bunch of songs they could jam, but didn't. was Sand even 10 minutes?
That Meatstick was totally rehearsed. LOL
Was Piper 4 minutes?

Trey needs to find his way back in their collective gestalt otherwise we'll just keep getting nostalgia.
I haven't heard 30Dec2010 but I'm assuming it was better overall then tonight?

I thought Trey and Fish were far more in sync tonight than last night's second set, by leaps and bounds. The band sounded much tighter as a unit and Trey's fingers were accurate. BUT, as for jamming, there was nothing, it was a vapid performance. There seriously wasn't a "real" jam the entire night, save for a brief Sand theme that was abandoned before it blossomed and a Page led Ghost that pushed Trey into some really nice interplay, but nothing really out there. I still had a blast, am wasted, and the Meatstick was a GREAT New Year's prank. But would I ever listen to this show again. No.
As I was watching it, and susep made the same comment in the LST, it really felt like a greatest hits nostalgia act, which made me kind of feel sad inside cause this is what Trey never wanted. Now, this past year, there have been shows which I thought were innovative Phish. Which really had me back in hard. But this was sorely lacking....and this was New Years in New York. Think about the performances that that venue has witnessed. I think Trey is having real trouble finding that creative musical spark again now that he is sober. He gets off on rock peaking a song, it's his new drug. You can see it in his face. And as a result, there is zero patience in his playing and thus nothing new can spring forth. He simply moves to the next rock peak.

Thanks for the review SF. I get where you're coming from with the greatest hits thing but I bet it would have been a fun place to be for New Year's Eve. Gonna have to give this a listen, especially that 2nd set, and weigh in then.

yes, its actually very boring and mundane. its not the "Phish" legacy that Trey once tried to protect and preserve. that is why Phish is currently a nostalgia act like most every other band. what separated Phish from the others was their ability to create spontaneous, inspiring music, now they play their catalog, rarely jam and collect a lot of dough. its really no where near, musically speaking, where it was and will never be I'm sure.
And to reiterate, from what I've heard so far, Page is killing it and definitely gets top honors for this MSG run.

I kinda hate to admit this, but i'd have to agree. The shows are fun but they (Trey) don't have that inspirational jams they once had. Like i can't get through the Cliffords Ball DVD's because after every two songs i have to play guitar. I wish they would just Jam again. I wish Trey would stop rock peaking and just Jam and see where it ends up.

All critiquing aside, I would of given my left testicle to have been there tonight grooving with the paug kids. I think that's what folks miss when I am critical. I haven't seen Phish since Shoreline 2000, and that's after having seen 150 shows. I lived on tour for 12 years (some of that GD). There's no place on earth I rather be. I couldn't care less what's coming out of the speakers, just to feel the energy and vibe of everyone again. I miss it all.....too much.

and another show tomorrow where there's a possibility they can redeem those imperfections we may have had in their performances this far. Or actually surprise everyone except a select few. Isn't that really why most of us still go to :phish: shows anyways.

But you see, while I might say last night (30th) felt like there were imperfections, ie. the band falling out of sync in the second set, tonight there were no imperfections, they were tight as fuck for the most part. It was more the style and approach I guess. So yeah, let's hope tomorrow they are tight as fuck and jammy. :rockout: :phish:
I really thought Trey sounded sweet in Sand, patient, listening, adding colors. What I really miss is the union of the 4 of them coalescing into great improvisational moments where their sound opens up and hits you like a force. they don't play that way at all, zero.

I thought he sounded sweet as well. I just would of liked to have seen it develop more, turn the corner if you will, allow a member to lead them down one path and the others follow, then, let another take over and go somewhere else. This happened in the Ghost although they didn't stray to far off the main course. Trey sat back and Page began to pound out a theme, he eventually caught it and they moved in said direction and began the build to the climax.

Ghost was definitely the highlight for me. The Multicultural Meatstick was hilarious and awesome all at the same time.
We left during the First Tube encore and got into the lobby of MSG where we thought they were playing the music over the PA (definitely Phish). Really spacey jam fucking incredible, then all of a sudden Trey comes on and says "we'll be back in 15 minutes." My buddy and I look at each other flabbergasted, thinking we just left and Phish is about to play a 4th set. Moments later they start playing Sparkle... still confused, we stand there for another few minutes as more people are walking out. Axilla comes on next...
I then realized that we were listening to a playlist of 12/31/95 being played in the lobby of MSG as everyone walks out. :x
Show was some really good and some really bad.

pretty surprised at the negativity in this thread, even for this crowd. show was an outstanding experience on every level from the inside. sorry the jams weren't double digit minute lengths, but they were tight in the right places and chaotic and sloppy when they needed to be. tension and release rawk Trey whipped the crowd into a frenzy.
and hating on the hotdog? really? it was a magical moment. when the meatstick balloons fell I definitely teared up. energy level was off the charts the entire show/run.
say what you will, Phish are still the undisputed masters of the holy NYE celebration. no other live band comes close to their zaniness, antics, and vision.
remember when we used to get jams every night but with a smaller selection of songs in a given year? now we get a whole lot of different songs with a smaller selection of extended jams every year. that tweezer two nights ago was ser, and there have been a handful of other extended jams this year that we breeze over because we want every set two to be 5-6 songs like it was in 98.
I typically try to avoid ranting about hate, since i discovered early it's a useless endeavor, but call it the codependent in me but I feel like the lack of acceptance for the reality of the contemporary Phish universe has got to be creating some level of misery inside you. Phish will never be the band they were in the early 90s, mid 90s, late 90s, PH, or yesterday. they will change, you either dig it or you don't. but what I've seen these past two nights are four guys busting their asses to try and create a party for their fans. and a badass party is definitely going down.

Phish will never be the band they were in the early 90s, mid 90s, late 90s, PH, or yesterday. they will change, you either dig it or you don't. but what I've seen these past two nights are four guys busting their asses to try and create a party for their fans. and a badass party is definitely going down.
I do love you all. happy new year!

R.I.P. Captain Beefheart
I didn't know he had passed. Recent too, 17th of December. RIP.
I thought the Meatstick NYE and Hot Dog was great stuff, but the rest of the show was lite on jams and setlist creativity. I just don't think the band is progressing, they're stuck in this 3.0/no jams/playing is solid but lots of mistakes...
I still feel like the high point since the return was Red Rocks/Gorge '09.

Red Rocks is clearly the apex of 3.0. I listen to those shows on a very regular basis.

this. My fav show attended this year. Felt IT in a big way that night.
Last night was just crazy. Unbelievable energy in that building. Pretty overwhelming really. No hate here. Today I really started to feel that bursting joy and fulfillment that I get from doing a phish run. So many great people from all over the country that I've been blessed to spend time with over the past week. So happy right now. Memory is pretty spotty for detailed review but lookin fwd to what they bring tonight and closing out this run with some paugers.
Happy New Year everybody! :beers: :phish: :rawk:
Red Rocks, LOL.

Thanks for the tip. Great discussion.
Have fun tonight, I'm sure it'll be the best show ever.

I love having fun at phish shows.
Nice chat!
Fun is fun.
Being objective about Phish's performance is another issue.
Don't get confused.
You're totally right.
And I thought it was a great show.
Time to pound beers and go see my favorite band tonight!

Hostility...
After listening to this show twice I thought the Sand and Ghost were the only 2 things worth a mention.. I was hoping for a YEM that got a re-listen to at least one more time... :-(
The meatstick prank would have been cool if you were there, that's about it. Not really feeling this third set very much though. Like what happened to Piper? Anyways, I like the Tweezer from 12/30 better then anything from last night.
But I still can't wait till tonight!

I was more entertained by the multicultural Meatstick and all the costumed dancers than by the Hotdog.

second set of that show is the best set of 3.0.
meanwhile, guess it wasn't the best ever new year's on tape. but i will listen nonetheless! maybe tonight will get crazy... maybe?
Sure they did the hot dog before... but why does that make it bad or lame? I mean.. they also have done fetivals before and thats not an original idea. They have also done musical costumes before. They have also played plenty of 3 set nye shows with auld lange syne at midnight.... wtf couldn't they have made up an original new years song?
:P
Also... great show and great music are two different things.

I thought multicultural Meatstick was an awesome prank. Had I been trippin' I would of been floored. Wait, I was trippin' and I was floored. :phish:
I thought the Bag and Moma were well done. Nice to hear Weigh again after, what, a year's rest? Not as clean as the nor'east version last fall though.
The Ghost has lots of things going.
Just like the other shows in this run (Heavy Things, Seven Below, Harry Hood, Gumbo, Tweezer, Fluffhead) there are a couple of songs in this 12/31 show I'll listen through a few times again. I'm not feeling this is better than the run in Miami last year which raises all sorts of questions.
But these Holiday shows aren't terrible. They just may not be lasting ones on rotation for this period.
I like how if you point out shortcomings in the band's playing you're automatically a hater.

It was really cool getting to see the rehearsal video for Meatstick tonight during setbreak.
Yes I was high. Subjective take:
Rock'n'roll rocked. It took me there. I love the placement of the song (like the early/mid '80's 1st set closing China>Rider). From there on out they couldn't really do wrong. The energy in the room was palatable—bubbling up at multiple times throughout the evening. Sure the 3rd set was rough at times, but 3rd set of NYE usually is — something about a shitload of balloons makes try sloppy even sans drugs. Fun fun show. Meatstick (self-referential 'sausagefest' pun here? probably not but still funny), After Midnight — awesome!, BDTNL & Piper — yes I wish they'd jam these out again but it was NYE; they are good tunes and I didn't care. Waste — I don't love the song but I loved the Trey solo last night. Ocelot with the Aud Lang tease — great! Manteca was fully jammed out! And not out of Tweezer! Sand jam sounded fantastic. Ghost wasn't a snoozer! The energy in the room was great. My last shows was the Greek — similar experience (think Cities) — great room, great energy, great band — moments of gestalt.
Happy New Year y'all!

Only if you weren't there.
You all know I generally stay out of these debates, but complaining about the Hot Dog being an old prank is just being deliberately obtuse--the show featured a twenty minute full-on Broadway dance number, probably 60 or 80 people on stage celebrating one of Phish's silliest songs. That is hilarious and inspired. It was followed by the band flying out on the hot dog for the third time, which was appropriate to the occasion.
Don't like the music? Fine. Tell me why and I might find your complaint valid.
Complain that the NYE gag was unoriginal? Get your head out of your ass.

This.
I also got a good laugh out of the fact that there was such a "meatstick" theme, then the hotdog comes out :-P
To me it was a good, well thought-out NYE gag and they weren't trying to be a nostalgia act by doing the hot-dog thing, they were riding a fucking meatstick to the stage!

I loved the NYE stunt, but thought the rest of the music played on 12/31 was typical 3.0 - no jamming, boring setlist, very few highlights. Very little was "out of the box" for Phish, they're not pushing themselves creatively.
First set was a snoozer, second set started out slow and only picked up at the end, 3rd set was again short and uninspired.
Saying it was the worst NYE show ever isn't really that big of a complaint, the bar is set pretty high. Tell me which NYE shows this was better than...

I'm shure it was a fun time, but the music is pure 3.0 "meh".......

So I finally just listened to this Ghost. More properly, watched it:
Phish | 12.31.10 | Ghost (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0Sf8lOdGRw#ws)
Who in their right mind is not all over this Ghost? Are you kidding me?? I feel like going on a Gumbo-inspired yeeeaaaaooowww woooooeeeeeeyy-fest!!!!! (Where the hell is that guy anyway??)
No seriously, I'm a sucker for this kind of uplifting, major-key thematic peaking. It's all like gaaaaahhhhh zzzrrrppoowww!!!!
But... since we are Phish fans and quibble over every little thing, here are mine:
1. I wish Fishman had handled (read: even attempted) the fills better during the final peak.
2. I wish the jam hadn't resolved right away to the Ghost theme... they could have kept the jam theme within itself and brought it down to a nice, soft, thoroughly satisfying landing.
But whatever... this jam is absolute ( . )( . ) in any era, and especially remarkable in this day and age.
/that is all
Edit: I just watched again (stream version). Pure fucking hose.  :music:
So, I've been working my way through HarpuaFSB's youtubes of this show while I work today and I just noticed this:

But that song still sucks.
The Ghost is great. The YEM> Manteca is fun. The 46 Days rocks. They played Weigh.
