So i might actually request tickets this year. I Have a question about it. When you put in for the request do they just give you any tickets if you get any? Like i dont wanna request and get stuck with fucking lawns. Or are akll requests given indoor seats.

The only way to avoid getting lawns is to request "Taper only." I wouldn't do that if I weren't taping, though.

Randalls Island is dope.  I have seen a bunch of  great shows there.  Beasties w/ Biz Markie was the shiz....Parking/getting there is dogshit.   It will be worse traffic then Big Cypress  or Coventry if you had to go in the front way.  I heard that was terrible ......the rest of hit holds no allure to me, though I do like the Mann as far as sheds go.  I can safely say that save for a last minute trip to Dicks, I will not be seeing any shows this summer.  And I am pretty sure I will bail on Dicks.  The west coast fall itinerary is too strong for me to want to miss any of it really, so I am saving my money and vacation time for that.  Have fun everyone!

Gonna pull out all the stops for great seats @ SPAC, if I fail I will hit Chicago. Maybe do a one night only @ CMAC.

What's the deal with Chicago tickets? GA Floor? Reserved? Lawn? Where do I want to be?

Knowing your preference to actually see the band, you would hate the lawn. I hear the sound ain't bad out there, but the sight-lines are pretty much non-existent.

The reserved is all off to one side or the other. The GA floor gives you a lot of flexibility as to where you stand and it's generally not insanely crowded on the floor (mostly because it's nearly impossible to stub down from the lawn).

Gonna pull out all the stops for great seats @ SPAC, if I fail I will hit Chicago. Maybe do a one night only @ CMAC.

What's the deal with Chicago tickets? GA Floor? Reserved? Lawn? Where do I want to be?

floor - 100%

floor or stands. I stood in the stands on the third night and it was awesome. But if you get a floor ticket you can pretty much go anywhere floor or stands. If you get just stands tickets, I am sure you can end up getting to the floor somehow, dont remember it being that hard.

I must say, from the floor and from standing on the stands. I could see the first row of ppl standing on the lawn and no more and that was like 8 rows up in those bleachers. so take that into account. Site views from the lawn are probably very poor.

I would def get saturday floor secured as soon as they go on sale. friday would be second hardest but I remember a couple re releases  for floors last year. Think I saw some extras outside sunday actually.

Last year they had a GA Only option for the presale.
They don't this year which sucks.
I got floors through ticketmaster without issue.

i thought the same thing.  if mail order were floor only, i'd be super psyched.  but i saw this a little further down the page...

Our allotment of tickets for each show is limited, so we may not be able to fulfill every request that we receive. This allotment will contain tickets in all areas for a given venue across all price levels where applicable, including general admission lawn tickets.

Last year mail order was for ga floors or reserved stands or best available. They hadn't announced the existence of a ga lawn at the venue yet when mail order happened. This year it's like any other. Best available means you're at the whim. Of the lottery.

I think I'm gonna hold off and just try for a 3-day floor pass from ticketbastard.

i actually stubbed a friend down to the floor last year.  it wasn't as hard as i thought it would be.

seems as though the presale is for GA floor/stands only based off of the price they are showing.  lawns are cheaper ($45 as opposed to $60)  so best available at this time would be best available out of only GA floor and stands.

the "our allotment...." disclaimer is on every date so it seems to be a standard thing they include on there regardless of which tickets are included in the presale.

this is the way im seeing it at least.

Probably not gonna put in for anything

This is one tour where there is really no tough ticket.
You can at least get into every show I bet even if you show up without a ticket before the show.

Hard tickets are gonna be the saturday shows (obvious)
Maybe Portsmouth, but the tues/weds placement makes me think it will be pretty easy. 2012 wasnt bad at all durin the week.

Gonna hopefully score sat/sun pavs for mpp on the public on sale, and then maybe an alpharetta too. And thats about it.

It's the same way for all the shows I looked at -- single, higher price for the "best available" option and the "includes lawns" disclaimer below. I read that to mean they are showing you the higher price but you could still get anything.

This year my plan was to wait until the public onsale. Really not interested in pulling a bunch of lawns in the lotto. I'll use the fact that I literally couldn't give away Hampton tickets last year as an indicator that good seats should be easy enough to come by, even if it has to be the secondary market.

is it just me or is this tour got some of the lamest venues/dates on record?
just nothing looks like "ooo, that's the ticket" ... i guess maybe Spac.

or maybe i'm just pissed the midwest rumors didnt pan out, lol. :-(
...and maybe i'm jus getting old and there seems to be less and less of the classic venues each year as the new places get the dates.

im thinking most people will be trying for 3 day passes for chicago, so my odds are better if i do them individually.  i'm just not sure if it will suck up too much time if i have to complete one transaction, then start a new one for the next day.  does that make sense?

TM for Mann is only giving up the lawns.

I need a chair.

I'm still occasionally pulling terrace level for Wednesday.  Is that lawn?  Does anyone want one of these if they come up again for me?

Yeah but that could maybe make it easier to move up to the pav.

Then there would also already be a chair for RJ when he gets there, no need to bring one

In order to get a 3-day pass that is in the pav you would have to have the same seats every night - it's next to impossible. You will get lawns if you go for the 3-day through TM.

That is bizarre. Tiny venue and it's all GA -- I would be all over that if it were closer.

Perhaps the IL > VA > AL routing means it won't just be a tour stop for many people.

Managed to pull halfway decent pavs for Charlotte.

The trick, I've found, is to have multiple browsers (and devices if you can) going at once and just keep progressively moving through the steps to buy time as you pull better and better tickets. With all the screens you have something like 7 minutes per order to decide. You won't always pull the best ones on your first try, as people end up losing or discarding tickets they were holding on to. Today, the Charlotte tickets I settled on I pulled about 20+ minutes into the onsale.

Also, little known fact but TM will let you exchange your seats in many instances. So go back to the even page after the hysteria dies down and after they've switched to the "pick your seats" map. You can see what's still available and there may be better ones that are free. As long as they cost the same or more, you can call TM and you may be able to exchange.

Also, for some reason I've had decent luck going through a phone. TM's site is better since it's actually mobile optimized; LN just makes you use the regular site it seems.

New cover in the second set each night at SPAC
Trey teases Possum each night, but they won't play it.
Mike comes up with third and fourth jam for Mike's.
Fish sings Bike while riding a bike.
Page leads the band in a 20-minutes plus version of "Great Balls of Fire > Fuego > Great Balls of Fire".
And Aug will bring a sign to the shows with a picture of Monica Lewinsky with the caption "No "Sing Monica", bring back "Jennifer Dances".

While the music is getting better as of late, I've noticed a trend with some songs.

Some of the best songs for jam potential are being played, their timings have shown them to be shorter than usual....IE: they aren't using them to jam.....on the flip side, normally shorter songs are getting some lengthening.....That, and the set structure is getting more and more GD like (sorry but what else is there to compare it to?). 1st sets contain songs, and 2nd sets are where the "jamz" are. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule, but for the most part I am starting to see that formula.

you think is new to this year?  I don't study setlists anymore and I don't listen to a high percentage of shows but I have felt this especially true the past few years.
2nd set usually starts with the jam.  they "segue" (as much as Phish segues) the whole first ha;f of the set.
it's usually the same sings a tour that are jammed out.  rock n roll a few years ago, carini last year, fuego seems to taking that role this tour.
I am not saying there is anything wrong with this formula and you can take enjoyment int he shows but this seems to me that it has been happening this way for the past few years.

no, not that it is new to this year in the formula.....just the songs the formula is being applied on....I could have stated that a lil clearer I suppose.

then, yeah, I agree.  the songs change but the formula is fairly consistent (definitely have exceptions).
I just feel like tours become fairly predictable, but the music is still enjoyable.

Even though it didn't really result in much and hasn't happen again yet, I am still happy to see this tour produce a song go bigger in the first set(Randall's gin).  And that hasn't seem to happen in a while.

How do we feel about the LP boards this tour? I've been going back to auds when grabbing whole shows; not sure if that's just a wrinkle in preference or some subliminal force at work.

Entry #1

I've had a few favs so far, but I've never liked a first gig as much as I did this Summer. Bass players spend their lives, worrying about "punch." The amp must have punch. And it makes sense because it needs to be physical. But if it's just a lot of deep vibration, that excludes the sudden impact that "punch" implies. And so many mentors have talked about how all you need is "time and tone" – and they are so interrelated.

At Mansfield I learned that it's all about swing. I don't know what combination of mood and acoustics makes for a gig that will swing, but that is my sole job as bass player. The rhythm doesn't have to be "swung" per se – a rhythm that has tiny divisions of three. It's just that the feel has to be actually like swinging the notes back and forth like a swing. Straight rhythms can feel swingy, not to mention those incredible half swung feels that rock and roll is based on. Bob Weir recently said that that is what the Rock and the Roll are – the combination of swung and straight, along with the sexual innuendoes, etc.

So I swung my ass off. I can't always get myself to, and then the tone came together. Then came the punch. I liked Philly 2, Randall's 3 a lot, just like everyone else, and Chicago 3, and bits of all the others. The swingy punchy thing – instead of picturing a swing, picture a rubber band – it's not literally my bass strings, but might as well be – it's the moments – the notes within the flow – one snaps back at the next with the inevitability of snapping that rubber band. On a good night.

Entry #2

The reason to do multiple soundchecks is we keep dialing in the sound even more and more. When the gigs get better, less becomes more. I can even play just root notes and it still feels "interesting" because the propulsion feels so good – the "coolness" of the melody is irrelevant to the feeling of flight. Though it becomes possible for the simplest of melodies to feel unique.

My attempt at a formula: A leads to B to C

A) The reasons for a good gig, but distant guessing:

All the practice we do (we were at Mansfield for two intense practices the days before)
Dialing the sound in for three days (including soundcheck) – with the sound even across the bass
    Having new material feels good

B) What happens:

Less becomes more – only root notes sometimes, just serving the situation – even one note can be super fresh and creative
    The Swing comes

C) The result:

The space between the notes comes – the chunkiness.
The feeling of flying through air – even the air from my fan on stage becomes a cognitively paired signifier of flying (not to mention the fans).

Entry #3

In a nutshell: the music plays itself.

Entry #4 – Fish and Elasticity.

He has been listening back to a lot of our gigs and noticed that when it's really happening we are NOT ALWAYS hitting together. I am guessing that one reason is that each person is true to their own groove, which is important – like each groove having a deep commitment to its own swing even if it doesn't line up exactly with the others.
