So, I hope it's not too lame to pick such a classic show.  Especially one that's been released as part of a box set.  I was thumbing through my Companion for a few hours trying to come up with something a bit more obscure, but I kept coming back to this tour and just couldn't help but pick this show.  I thought it could be fun to break down and pick apart such a classic.

Nice! I had a few albums already, but '96-'97 was when I really got deep into Phish, and this was one of the first 5 or 10 tapes I was blessed with. Looking forward to digging back into it.
I'd rather dwell in some dark holler where the sun refuses to shine, where the wild birds of heaven can't hear me when I whine.

Looking forward to reviewing the Fuckerpants closer!  :samurai:

It's been a long time since I listened to anything from Europe 97.  Probably when the Amsterdam box was first released back in 2015.  So not exactly going into this cold, but I really don't remember much about this one.

Soul Shakedown Party - Whaaaa?  A first-time-played cover tune to open a show?  You know it's going to be a helluva show.  Only other times I can think of that they've done this is Rock and Roll Part Two and Emotional Rescue.  Both at Hampton.  Oh yeah, Loving Cup to open the 1993 tour, showing off Page's baby grand.  There's probably others I'm forgetting.  Anyway, a fun way to open the show.

Divided Sky - They slam right into it and deliver the goods.  Hot.  Sounds like the band isn't as stoned as they were for their prior Amsterdam appearance.

Wilson - Another rocker keeping the energy up.

My Soul - Only the second time played.  Blues rock keeping up the pace.

Guyute - No signs of slowing down anytime soon.  One of Trey's last "prog" compositions and with tight playing until Trey has a couple hiccups towards the end.

Timber - Oh shit, would've guessed a change of pace cool down tune, but instead we're kicking things up a notch.  Starts out dark, like most Timbers but then goes into a bright, positive jam mid-way through for 30 seconds or so before darkness takes over again.  Would've liked it to jam out a bit longer but it covered a lot of ground while it was ensuing.

Billy Breathes - There's that cool down tune.

Llama - Just when you thought it was safe to sit down, they bring the heat again.

Gin - Great spot for the set's jam vehicle.  Rhapsody in Blue teases (although they all do) and a Tequila tease from Page.  Standard Gin jam for the first few minutes and then it starts picking up steam ~8:00. Mike mostly hangs back and lets Trey and Page run with it.  Page is really hammerin' away.  Smokin'!  If it's true that trills from Trey are a sign that he wants to get out of a jam, he really wants to end this one.  They gradually return to the Gin theme and close it out.  This is a real good version.

Golgi - Rough segue, but pretty solid from there.  Closing out the set.

Squirming Coil - I like this as an opener.  Try kinda struggles with it, though.  Not the best version.  Page makes the best of it with yet another great outro.  Which, then resumes after the crowd applause dies down and they start brewing up some ambience that eventually becomes:

DwD - Pretty fast version.  Starts off with a traditional DwD jam, then it simmers down a bit and then starts to veer into the Type II world.  They feel around for few minutes and then settle into a nice funky groove.  It's not quite cow funk yet but certainly a vision of things to come.  Cool jam.  Page has some nice synth sounds as it nears the end and eventually seemlessly goes into:

Carini - A quick key change and they're on their way.  It's certainly interesting to hear their first stab at this one.  Slower than later versions but that's largely because of the tempo they started with when they segued into it.  They pretty much completely abandon the chord progression by 3:00 into it.  They just dive headfirst into a Type II jam and they get there quick.  Within a minute, the pace has doubled, there's a melody and they're singing harmonies.  They get locked into a theme here and I'd love to see the lights, although I'm not sure how scaled back the lights were over in Europe.  Fish and Mike locked in with Trey doing feedback-ish noise in the background while Page kinda takes center stage hammering away.  On fire and we're not even 10 minutes in!  Just absolutely bonkers.  A lot of people are losing their minds right now.  Then the loops come in and there's some percussive start/stop jamming.  When they kick back into the jam, holy shit.  Intense!  But it doesn't last long until they relax back into a mellow jam that morphs into the YEM nirvana section of all things.  This develops into another chord progression with a majestic feel to it.  They ride this for the last few minutes and then go right into:

Taste - No settling down just yet.  This one has a real solid jam and then Trey brings it back around for a DWD reprise.  Nice!

Suzy - Getting towards the end here.  Trey moves over to mini-kit.  I thought that was abandoned at this point, but I guess not yet.

Caspian - Not a fan, myself, but after that set, it's all gravy.

Sleeping Monkey - I dig it.  Good encore tune.

Rocky Top - An even better encore tune.  Fast and furious.  Page rage!!!

Well, that's certainly one helluva show.  Hard to believe it was only the fourth show into the tour.  Maybe because it's only a month removed from the NYE 96 run, so they were relatively warmed up.  But usually it wouldn't be until a couple weeks into a tour before you'd see such a standout performance.  In any event, certainly a great pick, and a blast to revisit.  A solid A pick, for sure.

1997 was just about the height of my phish tape trading through the mail days, and i do owe a bit of gratitude to this show.  i was able to get in on a daud-1 b&p of this show pretty soon after it happened, and i used that as trade bait to get a ton of high quality 97 tapes within weeks of the shows taking place.  this show was one of my more frequently listened to shows of the late 90s.

a soul shakedown, divided sky opener in amsterdam is complete perfection!  in fact all the songs are just fantastic versions.

coil set opener finding it's way to dwd is such a weird pairing, but it works for me.  what also works is the next 40 minutes.  this is it.  phish rocking out and a hell of a way to debut a new tune.  no classic rock cover teases, no trey banging on percussion, no loops, no goofiness, just a 15 minute rocking dwd, a patient funky segue, and another 15 minutes of rock with a cool outro.  done!

it's funny to remember carini was a "europe" tune because they didn't touch it on american soil during the entire summer and fall.  hell of a way to debut it on american soil, too, but i digress.

mark this dwd>carini as one of the best phish moments ever!
