Quote from: Buffalo Budd on August 27, 2022, 11:39:05 AMI've been loving the stories on Deadcast this week. Still pissed at myself for missing out on the vinyl.  :frustrated:

Yep. I finished the second episode yesterday. Whew. Great stuff.

Loved the deadcast eps on Veneta and blasted the show on Saturday.
Last week I joined the Workingman's Pod to talk about this, my favorite show of all time. We had blast:

Play along with the boys at Veneta - you can mute or isolate selected tracks. Doesn't work on phone. You need a tablet, laptop, or pc

A little heavy on official releases, I went to make this up only to find my primary GD HD had crapped the bed. I've about exhausted bt.etree trying to get shows back, but may need to use shnflac.net. Is this still invite only? I had an account there once, but I'm sure it is purged....

I'm probably the only one in all of Dead-land but I have some strange fascination with January/Feb 78 and 79.  Do you guys listen to these eras?  I feel like they are lost treasures.  Sure, some rough stuff with Jerry's laryngitis and Keith and Donna fading away but man, some of this shit is fantastic.  Really killer versions of things.

What's cool to hear is Bobby singing all of Jack Straw for instance, and there's some SOLID Terrapin's and Estimated jams.  Normally Estimated is a song that doesn't do anything for me on tape, but these Jan '79 versions are just different.  I don't get it.  Really strange.

The last Dark Star's of the 70's too.  And some really long Other One's which are cool.

I really struggle to get to the good parts when Jerry has "laryngitis." I just know in my heart it's "chasing-the-dragon-itis" that is destroying his voice at that point. It makes me sad and I don't have it in me to listen long enough.

Not a huge 78 guy, but 79, especially Fall is very underrated IMO. Brent really re-energized the band and after he had been around a few months they were already gelling.

But, I don't think our fans do happily lap it up, I think they go online and talk about how it was a bad show.

those winter dec 78-jan 79 shows are spacey af and i love them in a way for that.
the shakedowns and darkstars etc are really unique.
Theres some real bangers too in dec for sure. eg- jai alai
IF you want to g all the way back to the from eygt of love shows then they definitely were on fire.
the Jan> to end of keith shows are the spaciest though.
And if i recall the tapes are mostly shotty.
but theres some real interesting stuff still.
NAssau with the Shakedown and D star in same set.
You dont get alot of those for sure.

Can't talk about 78/79 without Buffalo 1/20/79, no Donna and one of the best AUDs ever.

I think that's why I like it though... it's so close to the drama, the real-life struggle of drug addiction.  I guess it's like listening to June 2004.  It's so real.  It's so...  stark, perhaps is the word I want to use.  Perhaps it's because of my own past with serious heroin addiction, but I'm just drawn to these dramatic eras.  They're fascinating to me.

Yeah dude, full agree.  I love them.  So unique for that era.  There's a good bunch of soundboards but yeah, mostly auds that are not super great.  I know we'll never get any official releases from this era sadly.  1/22/78 is the closest we'll ever get to that sort of era.

I forgot about that... i need to revisit that one.  Wasn't that the end of the tour, and then they did the random 2/3/79 gig to close the chapter?  There's like a weird one-off afterwards.  I can't recall offhand.

The wife went to the Northside to spend time with her family today for her grandmothers birthday, so I had the house to myself for a few hours. My Disck's Picks Vol. 33 boxset arrived yesterday so I decided it was time for a little Sunday Morning Gosple with the Dead. Hot Damn this pressing sounds amazing!!!

An just so everyone knows that I'm not all Donna hate (just the Playin' wail) She sounds fantastic on both St. Stephen and NFA.

The Phil & Friends shows at The Cap on Oct 21-23 will feature the TAB horns and John Medeski! (also, the guitar player from Goose)

Kinda excited to hear those shows.
