Title: Summer Tour 2015 Poll, Pre-Fest Edition
Post by: runawayjimbo on August 17, 2015, 10:10:06 AM
With the pre-festival leg of the tour over for, what, 11 hrs now, I figured it was about goddamned time we ranked the shows from what was clearly a very strong run. If nothing else, it'll really piss this guy off (https://medium.com/the-phish-from-vermont/stealing-time-ec2d2c68efba).

Here's the list for your reference. Stoners.

Sorry, I couldn't figure out how to do a ranked poll (#1, #2...) so I just left it as post your list. I'll tally the results of there's enough interest. But you have to listen to the shows first.

ETA: whoops, that last bit was directed at jedifunk. You're cool, Bobafett.

No need to be a dick to a guy just because you didn't like his blog post.

I mean, when a guy tells me ranking shows is stealing from his experience and that I have no business anyway because I wasn't there, he can pretty much get bent.

Also, mildly poking fun of a gentle snowflake who doesn't like other people's opinions in our rather obscure corner of the Internet is hardly being a dick. IMO.

Without giving it any thought, at first glance I agree with a lot of what you've got there, especially the TX run anchoring the bottom.

I never said you had to agree.
I never said that I agree.

And you're right he'll never know about it but, being a dick is being a dick.

i could be the dick (or the walrus) ... i'm pretty good at that.

also, i read this guys post ... i think he was speaking about me. i actually really appreciated the post, it sorta made me realize i do this. i've pretty much been a dick in all the post-show threads. making fun of whatever, being sarcastic, etc, etc.

i found this passage especially poignant
Quote
I may never seen the likes of this but I know many fans have, way back when. It mattered then but now has become something else entirely, a corruption, a veil that obscures our view of the present and our appreciation of the now.

sums up my recent viewpoint on the band ... basically that i haven't give it a chance, because how could it possibly be as good as it was when i was on tour. its a scathing indictment of my attitude ... and frankly, its pretty sad.

this is a band i love, and will always love ... they showed me a light when my tunnel was at its darkest, rescued me from myself when no one else would .. i owe a lot to the music.

and yet, now i cut it down, find reasons to say it sucks... BUT NO MORE!

as for rankings ... i can't contribute since i've listened to all of about 60 minutes from this tour, but those 60 minutes were pretty damn good!

carry on my wayward sons!

That's cool and all, but it doesn't change the fact that dude is a giant whiner (and doesn't own a car).

Well look at you, you get some of that laser money and now you're looking down on people who don't have cars?!? You've changed, man.

Also, what Hicks said.

Maybe the guy hates rankings because he got failing grades in English.

I see you aren't familiar with the films of Matthew Broderick.

I think trying to juxtapose Magnaball to the rest of the tour isn't really fair in that the drive in set pretty much obliterates everything else they did in terms of improvisation.  Outside of that, I thought they were good shows, and on par with everything else they did this tour.  This is literally the most consistent tour of the past 15 years.  They didn't hit a wall like last summer, or struggle to find a groove like tours before either.  I thought right out of the gate they were firing pretty well.  The anomaly to me was the Texas run.  That felt more like the 3.0 of old, and outside of that.  I was pretty happy with how this tour unfolded.  In my opinion this tour had the highs of Summer '03 without even touching the lows of Summer '03, the playing is way more consistent than 2.0 now, and with the added dimension of improvisational exploration I think they are finally getting back to the levels of music they have always been capable of making.

I agree with your placement of MPP1 that show felt special and after relistening its a very listenable show from beginning to end.
Nashville as well.
The texas run, I feel they were just laying groundwork, pretty new territory for 3.0 and it seems like they play really good shows at historic venues they love now, not just the one off out of the way shows anymore like they did in 1.0

I haven't listened to the whole tour but I actually have a pretty tough time even ordering my 8 attended shows.

Magna 2&3, MPP1 and Mann2 were all killer shows.
