My home stereo has a receiver and 4 sets of speakers. The speakers are connected to a speaker selector which is connected to the receiver. We had the room painted, so I disconnected everything. They system was set up about 1-14 years ago. I reconnected it all last night. I re - wired one of the speakers. Everything else is the same. When I turn the receiver to a moderately high volume, the system says "PROTECT" and shuts off. I am going to re-check the connections, especially the one I re-wired. Does anyone have any ideas if that doesn't work?
thanks

sounds like you may have crossed wires and have a short somewhere - kinda sucks to figure out but plug in each one at a time until that message comes up, that will help you narrow it down.

watch for stray strands from your speaker wires....

and if it is happening at volume, make sure you don't have your speakers wired out of phase....

My best guess is that you have two speaker wires touching.  is there bare wire going into the speakers and speaker ports of receiver or have you converted to plugs?  A lot of times, especially if going the bare wire route right into the receiver, the red/white (or red/black depending on your wire) will end up touching and that will cause it for sure.  Guess it could be in the selector too.  If you are getting sound before the cut-off, you likely have everything plugged in correct way, but somewhere they ae touching, or possibly a cut/bad speaker wire somewhere.  Not a big deal, I would just triple check all the connections, reset being careful to keep them isolated from each other as they go into the component and you should be fine.  Worst case, you may just have to replace the wire.  I had this problem a lot when I was just going in with bare wire, so I started adding banana plugs to all my wire.  Then I realized I could just buy speaker cable with connectors on them already and i switched everything over to these.  A lot cleaner and pretty reasonably priced:

stumped

checked all the connections.
turned off all the pairs of speakers connected to speaker selector and tried 1 by 1, same thing happened. So it happened on every pair so it must be something central, right?
I checked the main connection between selector and receiver. plus to plus, minus to minus. Saw a couple loose strands, took everything out, tightened up, re connected. Same thing. Switched from channel A to channel B. same thing.

A couple thoughts. Before I took it apart I had the selector in A and a pair of speakers in B. I'm moving the B pair to a different room and haven't strung wire through the basement yet so didn't hook them up. When I started the system yesterday both A and B were on but there was nothing hooked up to B. It shut down right away. Did I cause a short in the system?

Or - the receiver is about 15 years old. Is it done? maybe I didn't realize it before because I haven't intentionally cranked it up for a while.

My stepdaughter is bringing a receiver I bought my wife a few years ago. She left it in her condo when she moved in here. I'll try hooking up to that and see if there is a difference.

Any other ideas??

ETA it is a Marantz 4320
the newer one is a Sony STR DH130

Maybe.....and just maybe.....this is the audio Gods telling you it's time to upgrade that system into the 21st Century and descend into the wormhole that is audiophilism.

I'd try removing the selector box and hooking the speakers up directly to the receiver to see if maybe the problem is the box.

But, I don't think our fans do happily lap it up, I think they go online and talk about how it was a bad show.

Both good ideas

Upgrading- yeah, new speakers. A thought
