Title: Guilty Pleasure Band?
Post by: antelope19 on November 16, 2005, 08:54:25 AM
Anyone here have anything they want to get off of their chest?  Been listening to something, but are afraid to tell anyone?  Well, I'm here to tell you that its ok.  I guess since I am starting this thread, I'll be the first in confessional.  You can find me rockin' out to queen sometimes. :-o  They kinda rock actually. :-P

"alternative" that went mainstream is my guilty pleasure: The Postal Service, Rilo Kiley, Liz Phair

and sweet female country/bluegrass singers like Alison Krauss and Gillian Welch

mmm, i love me some good queen & postal service...

have to say based on whats on my iPod right now, that coldplay is my guilty pleasure... they just make good music.  close 2nd & 3rd are maroon 5 & the killers.

Geez, apparently I have more "Guilty Pleasures" than I had originally thought.  IMO, there's nothing wrong with liking Alison Krauss.  She has a beautiful voice and was on Hoist.  hahahaha, and I would also agree with Coldplay, while they are "mainstream" they do make good music.  I enjoy listening to them on occasion.

OK, here's a *guilty* pleasure. Brad Paisley. Don't care what anyone says about the rest of contemporary country (or country period). The man can play guitar, so he's okay by me.

Of course everything that I listen to is cool

This moring, something from Macy Gray's 1st cd came up on the shuffle in my ipod. It was pop, but I like that album. Tight band, funk reminiscent of the pre disco era.

SteveVai/JoeSatriani........

Vai was Zappa's primary gunslinger for years.......got the gig w/ Zappa by transcribing all of Zappa's most difficult compositions..........muthafucka can
flat-out play.............but he is a shredder, and most of my band, friends, etc.,
think he completely lacks soul.............yeah, maybe..........but shred is expression,
and the guy plays w/ such a sense of humor, it's infectious at times.......

Satch - yeah..........what can I say..........I used to shred myself, and it's b/c of these two guys..............

hate 'em/love 'em/hate 'em/love 'em......

BTW - Queen rocks............

I've got to admit...Phish is a guilty pleasure band for me (actually, I don't feel so guilty about it). In my little circle of friends, however, I'm the only person who doesn't hate Phish, which is why I like this board so much. I can't discuss this stuff with anyone I know.

In a sort of related matter, anyone interested in broadening their horizons should check out the new Animal Collective album "Feels". It's pretty amazing, and I could see Siket Disc-type Phish fans digging it.

I went and saw some band last night called King's X.  They're pretty hardcore I guess, heavy rock.  Went with some dude I work with, I guess just looking to change it up compared to the usual hippie/jam scene.  It was interesting, I havent been to a show like that in a long time.  Not really my thing but a few of their studio albums are OK and i've been listening to them on my ipod.

King's X(!!!!!!)   what a total trip.............i was big into King's X back
in '91............hardcore?  Maybe, if they've gotten grugier than they
once were...........you'd be hard-pressed to find a better fret-master
than Ty Tabor, though.........guy's got unreal tone, great feel and
technique.......the guy's a monster......

Not sure what they're up to now, but these guys used to be hardcore
Christian rockers...............

King's -X def. christian rockers... alot of the Rush heads like myself heard of them...i think i had one of there CDs once...it was horreeblah.

Personally guilty pleasures...NO question...i'm a commercail Hip hop, rap, and R & B phreak.  I like all the old school good stuff, but also seem to have an extremely high tolerance for 'lesser'-quality new stuff as well.
If you got good ears, you could catch me bouncin' to some MC in my alero.    8-)
or you never know, maybe some Paulwall baby...

Yeah you guys hit the nail on the head on the King's X on describing them.  The guy I went with is a big rush fan and I saw a few others with Rush tour shirts on as well.  They played this tiny club, prolly 75-100 peeps in a suburb of milwaukee.  I guess last night was their 25th anniversery show too.

Ty is definatly a solid guitarist, I just wish they'd take their music a bit furthur......being a phan I was looking for the ripping solo and a bit more exploration.

The thing that's always driven me nuts w/ King's X is that they'll have
a great riff, and then a horrible chorus..........or a great chorus and a shitty riff....plus, i was never too thrilled w/ the vocals....

Boy that takes me back.....many moons ago, in a past life,  :-P  I really enjoyed 311.  Especially Grassroots, music, etc.  Basically, their early stuff.  I think this may cause me to go and dig up these old cds from my archives.  Its been a while since I've heard anything by them, well except on the radio occasionally.

Hey, if it's a pleasure for me, it's good, so it's not guilty :)  But I guess you could classify these as guilty pleasures:

Coldplay
Green Day
Van Halen
Joe Satriani
Muse (a total Radiohead rip-off, but I kind of liked their last album)
cheesy trance (well, sometimes)

Waylon Jennings is the real deal. I wouldn't feel guilty at all about him. He's not even close to Garth Brooks and others like him.

Put another log on the fire...

well, the honest truth is i dont know which one is which. i just know a couple songs that r jefferson and i dont know if its airplane or starship, i just didn't wanna admit that. i like "jane" which i think might be starship. but "need somebody to love" or whatever its called is where its at and thats airplane i believe.

i really need more airplane all i have is "starships greatest hits'' and i hate greatest hits cds so i definitely need some airplane.

2)   311
3)   snoop dogg (2 g's, right???)

madonna...that's a pretty intense guilty pleasure right there

i personally don't think van halen should have to be a guilty pleasure. mean street most certainly brings the heat.

couldn't help but notice ur number 6 is rather intriguing.

this is an awesome thread to whoever started it and i just feel like i HAVE to respond to everyones lists haha yeah i'm a loser.

hell dude, i spent hours, days, weeks, months, years, working on eddie's intro
to mean streets.............still never got it........eddie can't play it that cool anymore
anyway..............is there any rock album - and by rock i mean "rawk" - better than
Fair Warning??????    That was supposedly the one where things between eddie and
dave became hateful..........their worst commercial success; by far their all-time, nastiest,
hardest, eddie-is-a-god, album of all time, IMHO.

whoops................#6 is solo sting.............dream of the blue turtles w/ branford is sickness.

their old stuff was amazing imo.   i dunno ive been listening to this all girl band from olympia wa, called "be good tanyas."  the lead has an amazing voice and some of there songs hit home fo sho.  i really dig leo kotke on his own, ive seen him 2 times live and he has such a good stage presence and is funny as hell with his narrative between/during songs.   i guess trey band would be a guilty pleasure too since i couldnt stand it for years. :-D

Leo kottke shouuld not be a guilty pleasure. you should be proud that you have come to know his music.

I've been racking my brains, running through my record collection in my mind to tell you what records are my secret shame and I've decided i have none. I love everything I own and am proud of it. Music should bring joy, not guilt.

I feel shame.  Nelly Furtado's first album.  Extreme's "Pornograffiti".  Even contemplated buying the new Madonna album, it's supposed to be her best in years.  Man that was painful, yet liberating all at the same time. Whew!

Love 'em.  But then again, I grew up on metal.  I was stagediving at Slayer concerts back in the 80s.  Sadly, the last couple Opeth albums haven't measured up to the Blackwater Park/Deliverance/Still Life era albums as a whole, but there's still a couple awesome tracks on each of 'em.  That reminds me, no one ever got me their new DVD for Xmas.  I'm gonna go order that now.

Exactly.  Although at this point I could give two shits about being "cool".  It's mostly a guilty pleasure these days because of the wife hatred.   :|

Unfortunately this goes for me as well.

Wives not liking phish :? :?

Simply extend forearm, open palm and raise threateningly.

Unfortunately, you will later need to close that palm to J/O on the couch you will be sleeping on.

But it's worth it for the  :phish:

Your wives "hate" Phish?  Damn, that sucks.   :|

My wife took a liking to Phish when she heard the lyrics to 'Weigh' while I sang it to her.  That and I used to play 'Billy Breathes' to put my son to sleep when he was a baby. TMWSIY as well.

My guilty pleasure(s) are steeped in much of the New Wave from the 1980s.  I couldn't possibly pinpoint one single band and I still listen to all of them on a regular basis.

When I was still living in California and Blink were barely a blip on the SoCal punk scene they released an album called 'Cheshire Cat' which totally kicks ass.  Seek it out...  you could see where they were going to end up during their early years.

I have a guilty pleasure for early Green Day.  After Dookie I kind of lost interest but their early stuff is great.  Dominated Love Slave anyone?

Good stuff.  Green Day has some good songs on each album.  Even their newest album was pretty decent, as pop as it was.

haha I'm with you Whatstheuse....I too worshipped blink from about ages 12-15 (although I have nothing after enema of the state). I rarely listen to them anymore...but from time to time I get nostalgic for blink.

And yes, I'm going to say it....Britney Spears.  Her new album (and I also think her last album) are pretty solid pop albums, the songs are catchy and fast-paced (aside from the few lame slow jams)...so for what it is, I think britney does a pretty good job. But I only really pump the britney from time to time when I'm working out, really gets me going...or if im out dancing with my pop music loving friends, who are responsible for britney coming into my life.

Yeah, so I'll remain respectfully silent on Huey Lewis and the News...

But! As for the rest of those, I can assure you they are in zero danger of me hating on them, because they're among my favorites.

Paul Simon/Simon and Garfunkel were one of my earliest favorite artists, and they're still my faves to come out of the whole 60s folk/folk rock movement. I

Phil Collins was another early fave, and though his later solo work has worn a little thin on me, I still have a soft spot for everything he did in the 80s, and his first album (Face Value) is one of the more brilliant post-break up inspired albums I've heard.

And as for Genesis -- I owe them everything musically, because getting into them (through Phil's solo work, funnily enough) ultimately was my Gateway Experience to 90% of all music I listen to now. Yes, including Phish. Genesis, particularly as I went back through to their more adventurous early stuff, opened my ears to new possibilities in music I'd never considered before on my diet of pop and oldies (though I like the latter still), and there was no turning back.

And Peter Gabriel is one of my favorite single-person artists of all time, right up there with Frank Zappa and Miles Davis. And anyone who has only heard In Your Eyes and Sledgehammer (great songs though they are) is missing out on a wealth of beautiful, challenging music, both in his solo career and in the 70s when he fronted Genesis.

So yeah, you're not alone. Hell, I may be even more obsessed  :-D

U2. When I was a pre-teen in the '80s they we're it. I actually had a momment with Bono where I swung my shirt around in the air and he then repeated it back to me. Everyone around me started patting me on the back going that was for you. Stopped listening once I became a teen DeadHead. Then I discovered Phish and never looked back. U2 early shit is actually pretty good, really raw and full of angst.

Reading through this thread, a lot of the Guilty Pleasure bands that have been lsited, i think are really good and i rock too

Guns N' Roses-yep
Metallica-fuck yeah!
Van Halen-naturally
The Smiths-thats my shit! listened to them non stop in high school. Saw Morrissey in concert in 92.
Justin Timberlake-yep LoveSexy is a great record.
Lily Allen-yep, her track on Mark Ronsons record with the Dap King horns "oh my god" is killer.

I think my guilty pleasure band, is more the smooth soul/pop/jazzy sounds of the late 70's early 80's. :

Hall and Oates! Boz Scaggs! thats my shit!

Oh hell yes! Come on, you know you love some Cant Go For That!
Hall & Oates - I Cant Go For That (1981) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGZwPGsfcwM#)

Boz Scaggs "Lowdown" come on! Its a classic Biggie sample too!

All that is some Dentist office porno music right there!

I don't really feel guilt for any of my artistic pleasures, but in the spirit of the thread:

I find Phil Collins solo material thrilling.

yep. no jacket required in this bitch.

Love me some bluegrass.  I don't really consider it a "guilty pleasure".  Maybe that's just me though.   :-)

i've been opposed to it for years so maybe that's why it feels so
there's just a lot of it here, or at least grass/folk stuff.

early Billy Joel (pre commercial success) is good stuff, imo. Saw him when Turnstiles came out (he became really popular with the Stranger, about 1 year later), put on a great show.

I'm sure I listen to plenty of 'crap', I just don't feel guilty about it. You can find me singing along to some of the worst music, and having a good time doing it. I just love music damnit! I tried to think of what I feel the guiltiest about listening to and the only thing that kept popping into my head was how much I love the song 'Conga' by Miami Sound Machine.

Ok, now that I've seen that typed out I guess I do feel a little guilty about liking it...

any Philip Glass fans in the house? not really a "band" although he did have a group called The Philip Glass Ensemble.  Being a classically trained cellist, I can say with some authority that his String Quartet No. 5 is a masterpiece.  I don't feel guilty listening to it: Glass- String Quartet No. 5 (1/3) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JE1mCjPrH6o#)  However, I do feel guilty listening to something like Einstein on the Beach: 01 Einstein on the Beach- Knee 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezOI3sPqWPU#)

Quote
1975 was the year the Orioles, at the suggestion of general manager Frank Cashen, began playing pop music to reach out to younger fans. Throughout the '50s, '60s and early '70s the Orioles played "old folks" and organ music, and Cashen felt it was time for a change. So that season, public relations director Bob Brown began playing pop tunes during the seventh-inning stretch to see if anything would "take."

Late that season, shortstop Mark Belanger and his wife, Dee, went to Brown and suggested he try "Country Boy." The Belangers were fans and friends of Denver; they felt the song might catch on.

I don't really feel guilty about liking any music, but I definitely love a lot of cheesy stuff.

- Anything that's nostalgic for me, especially 80s pop from when I was a kid - think Don Henley - Boys of Summer, or Huey Lewis. That kind of stuff.
- Lots of dumb pop music: I actually kind of like Gaga for example. Okay, that's the only one that I really AM kind of ashamed of...  :shakehead:
- Cheesy classic rock, especially Boston. I looooove that shit. Never could get into Journey though.
- Epic Eurotrance from the late 90s - early 2000s - Tiesto, Oakenfold, etc. The cheesier the better. It's formulaic and just all around objectively terrible music, but I have a huge soft spot for it for some weird reason. Drugs probably definitely.

Oh, I also kind of like Dragonforce, but I can't tell if they are actually serious or not. If they are serious and not kind of parodying themselves a little, I'd have to include them too.
